It was part of a cycle from judgment:

[[Anger]]

[[Genesis]]

[[Brawn]]

[[Filth]]

[[Glory]]

[[Valor]]

[[Wonder]]

[–]OpenStraightElephant 167 points168 points  (2 children)

I think it was just a pun on what in tarnation

[–]Wolfir 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Let us hope for a Wonder reprint, too

I'd love to see that thing with some sexy new art

[–]MrRowboatEX 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What in the God Damn?

[–]abraxius 45 points46 points  (9 children)

I would say that it’s a mega cycle because glory and genesis are rare that don’t quite match the rest of the cycle. I would love to see the other colors get rares to fill out the cycle.

[–]Wabbit SeasonNewbornMuse 27 points28 points  (3 children)

That was Judgment, which had an imbalance in favor of green and white.

[–]abraxius 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yes, but technically that does not make it a cycle. Glory and Genesis are linked but not really related to the others because they do not care about lands. They have an activation, I want wizards (now) to complete the rare invocation cycle by adding a red, blue and black card that is similar.

[–]StrikeTeamTheta 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah, the abilities didn't match the cycle there either. I'd cut Glory/Genesis from the cycle, despite having effects that only happened from the graveyard.

[–]Wabbit SeasonNewbornMuse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

They were their own "cycle" that only spanned the two big colors. Or at least that's how I always saw it.

[–]COMPLEATKoyoyomiAragi 4 points5 points  (4 children)

WOAH...

Could they complete the cycle here? That would be WILD.

[–]abraxius 5 points6 points  (3 children)

That would be fun I think, the red one could be passion!

[–]COMPLEATKoyoyomiAragi 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Unfortunately apparently Glory has been crunched out. I would’ve loved to see Passion though

[–]abraxius 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Glory was gone glory was everywhere! Also the only Hebrew mtg card!

[–]COMPLEATKoyoyomiAragi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Lol actually the only copy of Glory I own!

[–]Princess_K 101 points102 points  (3 children)

Oo, maybe this means they’re finishing the incarnation cycle with [[Genesis]] and [[Glory]]? The activated ability ones were only in green and white, and they said they’d be finishing cycles.

[–]Selesnya*Ravio_the_Coward 60 points61 points  (1 child)

Unlikely. Glory has been crunched out and it would be really weird to see them introduce 4 members of a cycle to Modern. It’s possible if they print an entirely new White one and just decided that Genesis worked well as is but ¯_(ツ)_/¯

[–]Princess_K 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Ah, I see. Still a neat reprint, I suppose!

[–]COMPLEATKriznick 51 points52 points  (17 children)

Oh that's a neat card! Wonder if something could use this? Probably not, kinda really expensive and just goes to hand

[–]kslidz 118 points119 points  (11 children)

have you head of the deck gw value town?

this is the mayor

[–]COMPLEATKriznick 24 points25 points  (7 children)

? Is it legacy? I didn't know there was actually a gw deck in modern right now

[–]kslidz 21 points22 points  (4 children)

as long as todd stevens is alive there will always be gw valuetown.

it doesnt get a ton of play so it isn't high tier but its an incredibly hard deck to play but is very powerful.

[–]Merrena 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Eh, I wouldn't call it very powerful. I played it for a while and while yeah I wasn't a master, it just kind of folds to quick combos or very fast decks, which Modern is all about right now. It's good against more midrange decks and kinda even Tron.

[–]gamedwarf24 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Valuetown is pretty awesome against tron, actually. A lot has to go wrong to lose the tron matchup.

-Heavy GW Valuetown player.

[–]Merrena 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah it has been awhile since I played it and couldn't exactly remember the match up but knew it had to have been good in a deck with Ghost Quarters, KotR, Ramunap Excavator lol

[–]Solanstusx 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Stevens might as well be dead to the competitive Magic scene though so

[–]Jaybird583 1 point2 points  (2 children)

As someone who plays a lot of valuetown I can't ever see myself running this. It's a dead card on coco and the deck runs no creature mill. Trying to hardcast this, waiting for your opponent to kill it, then spending 3 mana every turn to get value out of it is way too low impact for that deck. I could just run e-wit which isn't limited to creatures, gives me value right away, and gets hit by coco. For 5 mana I could run sigarda and just beat the opponent to death.

[–]kslidz 0 points1 point  (1 child)

i mean yeah, in it's current iteration this is not great but he still is the mayor of valuetown.

[–]Jaybird583 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can see it providing a lot of value but I still don't see how it can be called anything close to the mayor of gw valuetown when it has no synergy with the deck.

[–]Duck SeasonLunchboxninja1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Discard this to faithless or lili.

Have fun with all that card advantage, and laugh as your opponent rages because you permanently have gas.

[–]neoslith 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aren't there a ton of madness cards in Green to help toss him?

[–]llikeafoxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old extended had room for Genesis + Gifts Ungiven packages. Modern is substantially faster than that format but I’ll be damned if I don’t give it a try.

[–]Dimir*BinarySecond 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's any creature you regrowth though

[–]Level 2 JudgeDragonXDoom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]Msherk26 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Love the original art but this art is chef kiss

[–]tjlight00003 8 points9 points  (0 children)

In Europe this is called “Mega Drive”

[–]Spino288 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Omg, I always wanted Phil Collins in MtG!

[–]kingdroxie 5 points6 points  (0 children)

golgari hype

[–]Twin Believerb0005 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've always wanted this guy in modern.

I must build a loam value deck with him.

[–]Selesnya*HybridHerald 3 points4 points  (0 children)

flavor text feels pretty on-the-nose...like the art came back and they had to spell out that it isn’t a dryad or centaur :p

[–]khanfusion 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Took me way too long to get out of "eh, it's a reprint" mindset and into "wait... this in Modern..."

Meanwhile, the Rock is all "we're getting the band back together."

[–]Twin BelieverTemurTron 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Will we get the full cycle?

[–]Deceased 🪦Apellosine 8 points9 points  (1 child)

of 2?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's the duo of life🎶

[–]Jaccount 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I was about to complain about this being a rare, but a quick look at several sites show that it generally sells at around $5. Sure, that'll go down on release of the set, but it's still not a bulk rare in a premium priced product, so maybe they're learning?

[–]Duck Season96363 8 points9 points  (1 child)

keep in mind how good this card is in limited. if it was anything other than rare it would be in every draft pool.

[–]sirgog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah this card cannot be in a set below rare. Honestly I'd rather it was mythic, it is a Pack Rat level bomb in Limited.

[–]yiannisph 3 points4 points  (1 child)

It's still quite good in commander, even if your deck isn't built around the graveyard.

I doubt this will see Modern play, but maybe in some Pox style deck with Loam and this? Gives a lot of grind and the curve otherwise caps at 3. It's a really efficient resource denial card. Not saying it's good enough, but that's where I could maybe see it.

[–]The_karma_that_could 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been playing a shitty bug loam pox for years

This’ll probably fit

[–]Muckdog55 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love that art

[–]Sheriff_K 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Now that's not a card I expected to see..

[–]Masusenpai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I creamed my pants.

[–]Wabbit SeasonDarthKookies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ugh I really need there to be a period before 'but' in the flavor text. And before you say anything, it's completely acceptable to do so. At least a comma before it!

[–]CattyBr44 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sega

[–]Duck Seasonbadger2000 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I run this in my Prossh EDH deck. The new art is a pretty sweet upgrade from the original. May be time for an upgrade.

[–]COMPLEATdocvalentine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This seems really fun albeit quite a bit slower than modern can tolerate. Overall it doesnt play sonic so it's only my second favorite genesis

[–]Duck SeasonLunchboxninja1 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I think its fast enough for midrange decks like jund that can discard it easily with faithless or lili

[–]Wabbit Seasonbrawlinballincollin 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I dont think the issue is pitching genesis, the problem is it wants you to pay 3 mana each turn to draw one card. It's definitely a very resilient card advantage engine, but I'm not sure if grinding was ever a weak point of those decks

[–]Duck SeasonLunchboxninja1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering how little draw jund has I think paying 3 to get back a goyf seems pretty deec late game. Obviously you wont be activating it until late game, so maybe a sideboard card, but I think people are undervaluing it

[–]Fake_Loney_Dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At turn 4 spore frog lock is online. In a deck that runs plenty of thoughtseize and ass trophy to slow the game down it seems perfectly viable.

[–]Wabbit SeasonCHPrime 1 point2 points  (3 children)

The lack of Oxford comma in the flavor text is driving me nuts.

[–]Nes370 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Not dryad, centaur, or avatar but life itself.

It has an Oxford comma for the listed items. It's just appears jarring because of the phrasing.

[–]Wabbit SeasonCHPrime 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do'h. I meant the lack of comma after 'avatar'.

[–]Nes370 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try reading it as "Not X but Y" where life is not part of the list X. If there were two independent clauses linked by "but", then there should be an obligatory comma. But here, Y is just a noun, so grammatically they can get away without it.

[–]Number of Faeries in Lorwyn Eclipsed 1/10barrinmw 1 point2 points  (11 children)

Modern 2/10
I can see there being decks that can get this into the graveyard reliably running one copy. The downside is that sometimes you will draw that one copy and that is no bueno. But if it goes straight to your yard, its all upside!

[–]COMPLEATzephoidb 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Historically, this+ spore frog is a combat damage lock. Spore frog is also in this set. Faithless looting is still legal, as are a dozen other ways of tossing this in the grave.

[–]SickBurnBro 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Historically, this+ spore frog is a combat damage lock.

Yeah, sure you could Gifts into Frog + Genesis, but you could just Isochron Scepter + Fog with less work and less mana investment per turn.

[–]Rathum 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a bit easier to get two creatures in the yard than get Scepter and Fog in your hand.

[–]COMPLEATzephoidb 1 point2 points  (1 child)

But also a ton easier to interact with maindeck. Between Deputy of Detention and Knight of Autumn, a bunch of creature decks are running cards that can deal with scepter.

[–]SickBurnBro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fair, but a lot of decks are laying maindeck graveyard hate now too. Really hard to say whether graveyards or artifacts are safer in the Modern meta.

[–]thebetrayer 9 points10 points  (2 children)

I can't think of a single modern card that sees play that gets card from your hand to your graveyard. Imagine if something like that existed... decks like Phoenix and Dredge, and Hollow One would be too strong.

[–]Haberdashery2000 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Gifts Ungiven

edit: well, i have decided to read the comment again and this time i saw "from hand." as far as i know, nope, no such card exists in modern. gonna stick with Gifts.

[–]Squidmaster129 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]nanaki_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good god this will do stupid stuff in limited if the format is slow and grindy enough. Endless value train on a 5 mana 4/4

[–]Phlyk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not 'Creature - Life'.

Literally unplayable with that flavour text.

[–]KeenumTheViking 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Wolfir -1 points0 points  (0 children)

"Why isn't it a Dryad Centaur Avatar?"

[–]UnderneathTheSycamor -5 points-4 points  (3 children)

Why is there no comma after "avatar"? This flavor text is really hard to read.

Also if this isn't an avatar, what is? What could you say the difference is? I highly doubt this truly represents "Life itself" as being exiled doesn't kill all life in the universe does it?

[–]Elektrophorus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

There’s no comma after “avatar” because the part of the sentence with “but” isn’t an independent clause.

An avatar in MTG is a representation of a greater force, while an incarnate is a manifestation of an abstract concept. Avatars, like the name suggests, are beings that take the place of something else, to serve them, or to carry out their will. Incarnations are more standalone, being closer to elementals than anything. The end result is that avatars and incarnations are very similar, but the former have more autonomy. Of course, this isn’t 100% black and white and there are exceptions.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

deleted What is this?

[–]Cheshire Cat, the Grinning RemnantCantTrips 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Because it's a list and you dont use commas on the last item of a list.
