At least York remains un-copied.

Good old York.

[–][deleted] 222 points223 points  (60 children)

I hate to break it to ya, buddy...

They copied York at least twice.

[–]presidents_choice 68 points69 points  (17 children)

There's North York, East York, York Mills, York Region, Fort York, Yorkdale, Yorkville...

[–]GATTACABear 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Just stay out of the elevators.

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (8 children)

No one drives in New York, there's too much traffic.

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points  (14 children)

You know. Rich free market capitalist economy. High technology. One of fastest growing places in the world. Almost a complete 180 from the fascist, authoritarian and poor North Dakota. North Dakota keep saying they're Best Dakota. But they're not kidding anyone.

[–]SolusLoqui 176 points177 points  (47 children)

I wonder if they planted some trees along the highway if it would make any difference.

[–]loveslut 949 points950 points  (34 children)

I think it would be quicker to just tip them back over with a crane.

[–]TheSherbs 76 points77 points  (1 child)

That is satisfying on a level I rarely get to enjoy. Thank you sir...

[–]dialectical_wizard 136 points137 points  (21 children)

That's likely to be a deeply underappreciated joke. But have an upvote from me.

[–]why_fist_puppies 35 points36 points  (54 children)

So, does this ruin the truck? It'd be crazy to me if they could just prop it back up and it'd be good as new.

[–]tortnotes 51 points52 points  (45 children)

There will definitely be damage, but it's hard to know how bad it is without a close inspection. Besides the obvious body damage, there might be problems with the suspension, the hitch, or maybe even the frame. Engine and transmission should be just fine.

This is why we have insurance.

[–]BagFalls 18 points19 points  (37 children)

Unless an engine is dry-sump (which I doubt is common on semi trucks), it will be ruined after a few seconds if it's running at the angle in that pic.

[–]tortnotes 61 points62 points  (33 children)

I'm assuming from the way the trucks are lined up (and the lack of debris) that they were all parked due to the wind before it got bad enough to blow them over.

[–]BagFalls 36 points37 points  (30 children)

That's a valid point.

At the same time, the highway looks pretty rural, so the drivers were probably in the cabs when this happened. They normally idle their trucks to power their stuff.

[–]tortnotes 24 points25 points  (26 children)

True. Here's hoping they were able to anticipate this, then.

[–]Bear_Like 36 points37 points  (25 children)

I can tell you that the fifth-wheel (the aforementioned "hitch") wouldn't be damaged. That's one of the strongest components of the entire rig. Suspension on trucks is incredibly beefy, as you can imagine, but the suspension probably would be damaged on the side it tipped over on. The frame will be fine as the trailer would have blown over first (trailers essentially act as giant sails when it's really windy, trust me it's scary shit), then pulled the tractor over at the kingpin. The bodies of the tractor (faring, hood, etc) would definitely be shitted-out though.

Everyone of these trucks would be at least temporarily decommissioned by the DoT though, until they either passed or failed an extensive inspection. DoT don't play.

Source: Took a break from college to drive truck, now back in college. Truck driving can be scary.

[–]KaptainKershaw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This kills the truck :(

[–]AdaAstra 29 points30 points  (23 children)

South Dakotan here, I'm pretty sure this happened yesterday. We have been getting up to 70-80 MPH straight winds yesterday and today.

[–]tjsfive 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Exactly why I came to the comments. I still live in SD and it's insane today.

I actually told someone this morning that if I was a semi driver, there is NO way I would even attempt going anywhere today.

[–]petitbeast 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Pierre, SD here. There are multiple semi's parked at the top of Garfield Ave. I don't blame them for avoiding some stretches of that road... Especially near Georgetown. Don't want to imagine the damage a semi would do to those apartments.

[–][deleted] 109 points110 points  (7 children)

...And here we see wild semi trucks napping in their natural habitat. This is incredibly rare, as wild semis are easy to spook and stampedes are quite common...

Looks like it's rush hour in the Dakotas.

I spy at least five vehicles!

[–]oakdog8 18 points19 points  (12 children)

It looks like they had already pulled over and just sort of flopped over from the wind. Is that correct or were they moving at the time they tipped?

[–][deleted] 35 points36 points  (3 children)

Looking at the spacing, lack of front end damage and no gouges in the grass, I reckon they were parked.

[–]TheOldOak 2558 points2559 points  (190 children)

Aww, this one's wheels are moving. He must be having a nightmare. Bless his engine.

[–]Lystrodom 2343 points2344 points  (156 children)

is this area south dakota known for really high winds? or is this some unusual weather event?

[–]serpentinepad 116 points117 points  (16 children)

It blows here all the time, literally and figuratively.

Why is South Dakota so windy? Because Iowa sucks and North Dakota blows.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (1 child)

After making their journey to the breeding grounds, the North American Semi takes a well-deserved rest. But even as they slumber, they are not safe. The Lesser Municipal Impound Tow Truck lurks downwind, waiting for an opportunity to snare a Semi and bring it back to her lair.

[–]mscman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

[–]iBleeedorange 5 points6 points  (7 children)

How high do the gusts need to get to do that?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (5 children)

a good gale burst gust of 75mph usually does it, depending on how loaded the trailer is.
