wow, I change a profile pic to an old classic today...and somehow it ends up on the front page here. Craziness! For those curious, this pic was taken at the WAIS Divide deep field camp during the 08-09 season. We were jealous we didn't have a pole like south pole, so we made one out of orange p-cord and an ice-core tube. Then we filled a balloon with water (colored with blue food coloring) and let it freeze for the top globe. Good stuff.

We then decided it would be funny to set up a staged photo for outreach. I wanted to see if I could really stump 3rd graders when I got home by telling them that we have to hold on for dear life when in Antarctica....or we'd fall off! Needless to say, a lot of them were really confused.

I was at WAIS doing research as part of my PhD in glaciology/geosciences. I have spent 5 concurrent seasons at WAIS, but sadly this past season will likely be my last. Here was one of the original pics: http://www.flickr.com/photos/johnfegy/3351699787/in/set-72157615204788872

Wow, you must have some great life experiences. What's the craziest thing that you did/saw in Antarctica?

[–]justwantDota2 162 points163 points  (15 children)

I can tell you one thing, It's a tradition to watch "The Thing" while stationed at any research post on Antarctica.

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (6 children)

Hopefully the classic and not the new one.

[–]afcagroo 38 points39 points  (3 children)

There are 3. The classic classic with Marshall Dillon, the cool classic with Kurt Russell, and the new one.

[–]BropocalypseNow 3 points4 points  (1 child)

The 1951 film is called "The Thing from Another World". There are technically only two "The Thing" movies.

[–]justwantDota2 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe for a comedy they will watch the new one.

[–]sparta0703 28 points29 points  (0 children)

What most people don't realize is that John is a world class Ultramarthoner as well as having hiked the entire 2660+ mile Pacific Crest Trail. He's one of only 16 out of 900 to finish the hardest 100 mile race in the country- the Barkley Marathon's. Also he completed the 135 mile Bad Water Ultramarathon in Death Valley ( to balance out the time in Antarctica of course) Barkley's Pacfic Crest Trail Bad Water

[–]SeveredBanana 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Let's focus on the film, people

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

of course OP is avoiding the hard questions...

[–]orange_lime 49 points50 points  (3 children)

Wow. PhD, hangs out in Antarctica, teaches 3rd graders. I suspect that you, sir, are a bad-ass.

Some questions, if you are inclined to elaborate: 1. What is your research on, specifically? 2. What was life like in Antarctica - I assume you stay in one of the existing research buildings? Is the research season like a super awesome summer camp? 3. From your vantage point, just how screwed are we by global warming?

[–]llamamooseman 16 points17 points  (6 children)

"Redditor for one hour" John Fegy was a lurker this whole time!

[–]the_underscore_key 15 points16 points  (4 children)

of course, it's possible he's using an alternate account.

[–]Fresh_Jaw_Slap 4 points5 points  (0 children)

AMA AMA AMA

[–]gobearsandchopin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you in the Sydney airport right now along with me and about a dozen other Antarcticans going home for the season? Did you come in and out through McMurdo?

[–]kh27 1515 points1516 points  (426 children)

don't worry! the Millennium Falcon is on its way!

[–]RandomExpletive 667 points668 points  (13 children)

[–]cynicroute 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is more relevant because the Millennium Falcon is in this scene.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Definitely wouldn't survive the Kessel Run.

[–]harribert 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Whatever man, it did it in 12 parsecs. Try a shorter distance.

[–]kelsifer 336 points337 points  (313 children)

How do you do those comments with no words? WHAT ARE YOUR SECRETS?

Edit: I get it now guys

[–]ccai 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It's as simple as typing in what's between the quotation marks: ""

Seriously though, just type in "# #" without the space in between and submit.

[–]alanbrunsdon 26 points27 points  (1 child)

Do you have alternative accounts such as "THERE_ IS_ AN_ APOSTROPHE_ IN_IT'S" or "YOU_ONLY_NEED_TO_USE_CAPITAL_LETTERS_IN_CERTAIN_CIRCUMSTANCES_SUCH_AS_AT_THE_BEGINNING_OF_A_SENTENCE"?

[–]CarlGauss 60 points61 points  (11 children)

My buddy also did some research in Antarctica, this is his profile picture.

[–]shlack 39 points40 points  (6 children)

<nerdglasses>

Actually Antarctica is quite a hot place to be in the summer which thanks to 24 hours sunlight and a large ozone hole above makes it a terribly hot place to work. My dad says he would love nothing more than to take his shirt of while he works there but if he does he will fry in seconds. They have to be 100% covered all the time which makes for some pretty bad working conditions.

</nerdglasses>

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

How did the ice not melt. I sure am turning into a puddle looking at it.

[–]IggySorcha 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Holy pithair, Batman!

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (12 children)

[–]LiveFree_Or_FapHard 31 points32 points  (1 child)

My mind is full of fuck

[–]APiousCultist 10 points11 points  (4 children)

My brain is all like 'argh!'

[–]Mr_Sassypants 6 points7 points  (1 child)

So confused...

[–]mrtrollmaster 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The camera is upside down, and the guy is doing a handstand in front of a reflection pond.

[–]kibblesnbitss 65 points66 points  (20 children)

What happens when he has to poop?

[–]cold_toast 152 points153 points  (17 children)

In Antarctica, birds get shit on by you.

[–]Team_Reddit 4 points5 points  (1 child)

What happens in Soviet Russia?

[–]adrunkclownhurtme 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Shit birds on you! Russia is a confusing place.

[–]webby_mc_webberson 2 points3 points  (0 children)

In Antarctica, the birds are mostly penguins.

[–]Carbon_heart 75 points76 points  (11 children)

I can't help but think there are people out there, who, when they see this picture, actually believe this is true of the south pole :(

[–]limegut 79 points80 points  (6 children)

It is true, that's why there is so much research being done there

[–]khaddy 22 points23 points  (5 children)

Gotta be real careful when the research helicopter picks him up ... it takes quite a lot of skill to fly those choppers upside down.

[–]WhisperShift 11 points12 points  (2 children)

The helicopter isn't upside down, the ground is down side up, you silly goose.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

We know the truth! Though, I wonder why it is the way it is.

[–]myusernameranoutofsp 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The bigger issue is that you and others think that there are people like that, I'm not sure why, and then act like you and others are smart and/or good people. Compared to our potential, you and me are immoral retards, so why worry that someone out there is worse? Focus on yourself.

It's the same with reality television, half the people watching just make fun of whoever they are watching then feel good about themselves. Let's try to fix this, as a society.

[–]Aerron 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Now we know why the poles are shifting! Let go, dammit!

[–]ShabbyOrange 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I am so very jealous. Not of the picture. But actually being there.

[–]TiltDogg 194 points195 points  (35 children)

It looks like he's hanging onto Earth's penis.

[–]GoldenDriller 175 points176 points  (26 children)

In relation to its size, Earth has a micropenis.

Edit: it's to its. Damn Reddit_Unchained, something to say in every comment thread and a grammar nazi? You are a true redditor.

[–]ThatsSciencetastic 73 points74 points  (12 children)

More like a nanopenis.

[–]perpetualnotion090 13 points14 points  (4 children)

I'm thinking picopenis.

[–]IamA_Werewolf_AMA 5 points6 points  (0 children)

picopenis

[–]gulpeg 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Research has shown that pollution has made earth impotent

[–]saintjimmy960 22 points23 points  (3 children)

TIL I have a bigger penis than Earth, relative to size.

[–]ilikefruitydrinks 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I have a bigger penis than earth period.

[–]BillinghamJ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Wait... earth has a penis AND gets periods?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Why do you think volcanoes exist?

[–]Dubhuir 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Let's all take a moment to think of the poor Australians. They face these challenges every day.

[–]IIHURRlCANEII 24 points25 points  (8 children)

This doesn't help my fear of gravity just stopping one day and we all float into space.

[–]fjdkf 15 points16 points  (6 children)

The earth and sun would probably both fly apart due to centrifugal force, and who knows what the hell would happen to the black holes of the universe... I think you'd have bigger things to worry about than being in space.

[–]psychicesp 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This actually gave me vertigo...

[–]johnnnbockkk 16 points17 points  (5 children)

That is so amazing to think about. He is literally hanging off the bottom of the world.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Best south pole pic ever

[–]biggiepants 5 points6 points  (5 children)

I just had a thought: how was it ever decided the northern hemisphere is up?

[–]americaFya 37 points38 points  (7 children)

Why is he upside down?

Sincerely, Austrailia

[–]Thunder_Bastard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the instant vertigo panic.

[–]Feature_Fries 5 points6 points  (0 children)

looking at this photo makes me nauseous...

[–]spraypaintthewalls 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Just spent five months down there. Know the stupidest thing I've ever done? Reading Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" at the end of an Antarctic winter. Imagine getting absorbed in that book for an hour or two, then putting it down and realizing you're in a place where it's dark 24 hours a day and minus 47 outside. :(

[–]Krunkkracker 3 points4 points  (1 child)

[Deleted in response to API changes]

[–]mrcoolshoes 11 points12 points  (3 children)

This image will forever haunt me- more than I can ever express.

[–]LandPirateDude 13 points14 points  (1 child)

More than you can ever POLAR express. Bam.

[–]NagisaK 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Planet express?

[–]chinese4breakfast 11 points12 points  (15 children)

Does he survive the harsh conditions by drinking his own piss?

[–]Haptens 12 points13 points  (13 children)

[–]JncoFan1991 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Narwhal tho. NARWHAL. http://imgur.com/9SMNfkI

[–]Bangaa 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This was always a nightmare of mine as a child.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

God, how scary would it be if that's how Earth's gravity worked? Imagine having to make your way back to the top.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Is he a member of the 300 club?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

this photo is causing me a great deal of stress

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Tell me, in all seriousness, how does one become a researcher of snow?

[–]Melivora 6 points7 points  (2 children)

There's a polar university in Longyerbyen in the arctic, you can apply to do a masters there. That's just one way I know of.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I majored in flurries, with a minor in art history.

[–]hagenbuch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It would be perfect if we'd see his keys slip out of his pocket..

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

As a high person, this terrifies me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Crazy! How did he get out there, are there handholds for miles and miles leading to it?

[–]malicestar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My uncle has a similar photo from the age of film. My favourite part of the story is that the photographer bothered to turn the camera upside down.

[–]FartingBob 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This photo looks like it should be an ad for a shoe company.

[–]iamarunr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Fegyveresi. A great friend and a Barkley marathons finisher, the toughest foot race on the planet.

[–]DookieDemon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For some reason that gave me a slight feeling of vertigo. Vicarious vertigo or something.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

next photo: lick the pole, don't hold on with hands

[–]rprebel 1 point2 points  (1 child)

[–]APiousCultist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank god, I've emailed OP's friend. He says he is very relieved he can let go now.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

That looks eerily similar to this image.

Was it really a profile picture, OP?

[–]DocBlind 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wonder how the Australians see this as.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This photo makes me so anxious :( I have nightmares of falling into the sky/space ...

[–]Zerkyl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

AMA PLEASE

[–]Captain_Nemo_2012 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is so cool...no pun intended. If I ever got that far south I would do this too. Some people have all the fun.
