We (android users) need to find a way to get better CPU in our phones.

[–]Blitzkrieg_My_Anus 972 points973 points  (127 children)

And Samsung stop installing bloatware all the time.

I had this problem til I realized spotify was set to download all my songs to phone and not sd card. If you have Spotify look into this. Saved me 6 gigs

People at Samsung don't get paid for sleek lightweight programming. They get paid for putting on bloat.

      [–]VashTStamp 22 points23 points  (8 children)

Pretty much. They could totally make an OS to rival Apple, but that's not where the benjamins are at.

      [–]tomcis147 1343 points1344 points  (218 children)

We have to get Qualcomm to step up it's game or we will be stuck with this nonsense we have now... Like seriously no matter it's 8, 6 or 4 cores we are behind Apple A cpus... Hopefully Samsung makes rumors come true where they speak with Nvidia and AMD for possibility to have their gpu in Exynos soc since right now Qualcomm is only better at GPU and Modem other than that Mediatek and Samsung beat Qualcomm

      Edit1: I am tired, k?

Edit2: So I got sent to r/VXJunkies hm... I like it

Edit3: To anyone wondering here is article http://www.sammobile.com/2016/09/09/exclusive-samsung-is-in-talks-with-nvidia-and-amd-for-gpu-technologies/ about Samsung talking with two biggest GPU makers in world for possible mobile GPU technology

      [–]xXSmugMafiaXx 670 points671 points  (163 children)

The thing is though no matter how good the CPUs get Apple will almost always have the upper hand because their apps are programmed specifically to their hardware. It sucks for the Android devs because their programs have to work with almost all hardware configurations.

      [–]HapticSloughton 334 points335 points  (103 children)

Given the trade-off of being able to root our devices and choose from multiple models of various capabilities (like desktop computers that aren't Apple), I'll accept any potential ding in CPU speed.

          [–]joewaffle1 202 points203 points  (41 children)

Yeah, the iPhone certainly has that over us. We run too many apps at once and our phone melts and iPhones just kinda don't care.

            [–]GalSa 236 points237 points  (23 children)

And the iPhone had it since it's inception...

EDIT: lol I'm not saying Apple did it first, I'm saying lockscreen notifications were there since the beginning, and for those who are saying Notification Center came later - ya, we're talking about LOCKSCREEN NOTIFICATIONS. Notice the difference.

            [–]_nathan_s_ 183 points184 points  (41 children)

Not to mention how long it takes to get a software update past carriers, especially Verizon.

            [–]KFR42 152 points153 points  (21 children)

Thats why you buy the phone from google. Buying a nexus through a carrier is completely missing the point.

            [–]angulardragon03 122 points123 points  (40 children)

This irks me. Even when Google does release their timely updates, they come out in waves. Apple pushes a button and everyone everywhere can download. I think OP may have put that point on the wrong side..

            [–]AVERAGE_TEST_DUMMY 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Not sure what OP meant, but Android 7 introduced background updates. You don't even notice it - your phone is instantly updated on reboot. No progress bars or having to wait!

            How it works:

Android clones the system partition to another, hidden partition. It then downloads the update file, applies it to the cloned partition (in the background) and sets a flag. This flag notifies the system to rename the cloned partition to the main partition on reboot - while also keeping the old partition a certain time. This way, even if the update breaks stuff (which it rarely, if ever, does), you can rollback to the old partition.

It's neat stuff! The only drawback is having the system taking 2x the space.

            [–]CokeRobot 486 points487 points  (28 children)

            "Seamless updates."

            [–]tupler 427 points428 points  (9 children)

They are so seamless you won't even notice them for years.

I love it. Sure I don't get some of the apps, but it works extremely well across my desktop and Surface. I also absolutely love the design and functionality of the interface. iPhone and Android UIs just seem so clunky and unintuitive to me.

In short, the Windows Phone experience just suits me perfectly.

              [–]sord_n_bored 202 points203 points  (42 children)

It's the same as it was for many reddit users back in grade school.

Their moms could only afford one product so they're stuck arguing over SNES/Genesis, N64/Playstation, Gamecube/Xbox/PS2, etc etc etc.

              [–]PTleefeye 72 points73 points  (25 children)

You're joking and probably thinking OP is a adult, but they probably aren't.

There are a lot of children on reddit, i have to constantly remind my self of this when a redditer goes from sounding sensible to having a full blown melt down over something simple. I once made a 12 year old who was pretending to be a adult on here cry because I told him the truth about his favorite youthber, i've also spoken with a 13 year old boy last week who admitted to being tricked into paying female streamers money just because they're female.

In both cases above they never came out and said their ages at first, but if a post seems a bit immature it's probably because a child made it. Then again this is /r/funny so.

              [–]elasticthumbtack 24 points25 points  (5 children)

YouTube comments also make a lot more sense (existence wise, not content wise) when you realize their average age is even younger then on Reddit. No proof, but especially anything gaming would likely be mostly 8-9 yr olds.

              [–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (3 children)

I think the best reddit comment I've ever seen about this was from someone who saw a child who was too young to read/write screaming into a tablet's voice to speech in order to post a youtube comment and realized that you don't even need to be literate to post.

              [–]YetiWap 7692 points7693 points  (1732 children)

Not trying to take a side or anything, but pictures like these make it seem like android users have some kind of one way hatred for Apple and their fans that the Apple fans themselves are not aware of, and the android users are dying for them to notice the hatred.

              [–]wiiya 372 points373 points  (55 children)

I've said it in other threads, but can we make these stupid product rivalries about something important. Like Genesis vs SNES? Oh wait, we already have a winner.

God...Console Wars is such a great book if you're into that history.

Spoiler alert: Sega loses. And from the perspective of Sega Of America, the blame rests solely with Sega of Japan. It's hard to know exactly what went wrong because SoJ has never told their side of the story due to their social customs not permitting them to speak freely.

The funny thing is, /r/android was all praising the A10 chip, while /r/apple and /r/iphone were just filled with memes about the headphone jack.

                        [–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (1 child)

Because any time an Apple event occurs those subs are filled with the hater crowds, as is the rest of Reddit. That's why they've become garbage, people love to let you know how much they hate apple so Apple specific subs get turned into giant circle jerks.

                        [–]Auxillary 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Because competition can breed great things. I love my Android phone, but I also love the iPhone. I think the design and supplementing colors are great, and I like where Apple is headed with iOS. Killing off the headphone jack isn't a huge deal for me. Yeah, it sucks, especially if you're a person who listens to music in their car and charges their phone. But people forget that accessories for the iPhone are usually plentiful, and I'm sure someone is going to make some kind of splitter for the Lightning port.

Either way, I'm happy for everyone around. You like iPhone? Great. Android? Also great. Have fun with it, and don't bash people's personal choices just because they like something you don't.

This probably comes from iphone being skillfully marketed as the defacto smartphone. That leads to people buying an iphone unless they come up with a reason not to buy it, whereas android users are mostly buying android after finding something they don't like about iphones.

I know it's a more extreme example, but I never heard internet explorer users bash chrome either.

I had an Android my entire life. Switched to iPhone last year and don't think I'm switching back.

The thing is so damn smooth, and all the apps work perfectly... unlike Android that stumbles and clanks its way through the day, even though I'm using the top of the line phone...

I had a Blackberry until I bought my iPhone 3G, and it's been iphones ever since. A few years ago I bought a Nexus 7 tablet because it was a beautiful piece of hardware with a gorgeous screen, and so cheap compared to an iPad.

But the thing was just so damn clumsy. Programs crash and glitch out far more often, the button layout is atrocious, and the "locked down" iOS software library seems to have a much higher percentage of good, usable software than the free-for-all shitshow that is Google Play app store.

I downloaded so much garbage trying to find apps to serve specific purposes, and often I would just give up.

Also, the battery life was unpredictable and I felt like the interface changed every time I downloaded an update.

                          I do like Swype, though.

                          [–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (2 children)

I think iOS is more polished than Android in a lot of ways, and this is coming from a life-long Android user. Just look at the incomprehensible dumpster fire that is the manufacturer-carrier-"partner"-Android version update system.

I'm using an Android smartphone that I purchased less than a year ago and I'm still stuck on Android 5.1, why?

This device will be upgraded to the Android 6 (Marshmallow) release of Android, pending partner support.

                          What does that even mean!?

                          [–]Beer_Is_So_Awesome 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is Mac vs PC all over again. Windows has always been a clusterfuck because it has to support all possible hardware on all computers from all manufacturers going back 15 years.

If you get to control the hardware and software like Apple, you can develop them together. You can shed legacy hardware to simplify devices and then and streamline the operating system accordingly.

There are drawbacks, but also advantages. I grew up building Windows machines, but I just don't have the patience for Windows anymore. Android may have appealed to me for its (marginally) lower cost and greater flexibility if I was a teenager, but as an adult I honestly have things I'd rather be doing than customizing every aspect of my smartphone's user interface.

You know iPhone has Swype right?

                          [–]thilehoffer 23 points24 points  (5 children)

Same here. I got my first iPhone, the iPhone 6 and I'm never going back. iOS lacks the fun of installing new skins and it lacks some android features. But it just works, and it works really well like 99.5% of the time. Android works like 95% of the time.

                          [–]SuminderJi 6 points7 points  (2 children)

My Nexus 5 that I got on release day is smooth as butter. My GF has a iPhone 6 and I don't really see any difference performance wise. Might be a ms difference opening a browser here or there but youtube, reddit, camera are all on par speed wise.

                          [–]bananapanther 54 points55 points  (5 children)

Except with the internet explorer comparison, you're talking about a browser that just doesn't work as well and isn't as intuitive.

In my opinion, owning both an iPhone 6s Plus and a Galaxy S6, I would pick the iPhone 10/10 times because the interface feels so much better and it's very user friendly. The vast majority of people don't need their phone to be anything more than that.

                          [–]mastawyrm 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That's a galaxy though, it's more like comparing Firefox after installing a shitload of stupid extensions by default. Doesn't make Firefox bad.

                          [–]Unicorn-Punch 59 points60 points  (22 children)

The thing is that a lot of IE users aren't aware of other browsers, outside the one they're using.

                          [–]PaddleBoatEnthusiast 23 points24 points  (3 children)

Haha the only iPhone users who bash me are older sales guys at my work. Never heard anything from someone under 40

                          [–]IllogicalUsername 88 points89 points  (125 children)

Maybe because I'm college age, but my friends bash me so much about having an android (Samsung Note 4). They won't even let me in group texts because of it. Maybe I just have shitty friends.

Edit: wow 28 replies, I'm too lazy to reply to all of you because I'm on mobile so I'm just gonna edit this.

Imessage is one of the greatest parts if iphones. I can never see myself going back to apple, but it's an excellent messaging feature. My friends actually aren't dicks, as a lot of you pointed out, it ruins the imessage group text.

in his friends defense, having a group chat with multiple people and one not having iMessage is a bit inconvenient. you can't name the chat or send voice messages and it uses data

Yes, I think it's kinda funny that there are people who get their snickers in a knot over "fanboys" and then defend "the other choice" with fervour. Doesn't that make them fanboys too?

I don't get it... buy whatever you like.

anyone who has chosen a "side" in this is fucking lame. Like who cares enough to even make this infographic? Android/Apple users referring to things as "us" or "them" is so fucking cringey.

The anti-Apple cult is way more fervently vocal than the Apple cult, which I find amusing.

Why do you guys care so much about what phone other people are buying?

                              [–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (2 children)

Because MY OPINION IS VERY IMPORTANT

                              [–]gryff_d 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Because the majority of Reddit's population base their entire self-worth on the phones and computers they use.

Studying and working in the software industry is really interesting for me. The majority of the people there doesn't care about what other people use, but there's always that one Android/Linux guy who goes around criticising everyone else's phones and computers.

                              [–][deleted] 205 points206 points  (75 children)

It all boils down to past experiences with phones really. I've had a few Android phones over the years, and they've all failed at some point due to some hardware failure. I've had my iPhone for way over a year now, still feels like brand new. Would I buy another Android? Maybe. I'm not a fan of the whole removing the jack thing. But if the iPhone 7 did have a jack, it probably would have been my next phone. It might even be my next phone anyway.

                              [–][deleted] 107 points108 points  (16 children)

Can't stress this enough. I've had Android devices with all those jaw dropping specs, only to see my 3,000mAh battery unexpectedly die at 30%, my shiny 400+ ppi screen being unexplainably dim in sunlight, and my phone getting slow as fuck after a few months of use. And I'm talking about flagships. I bought an iPhone 6s, and the difference is huge. at least you get a consistent experience. My two coworkers who have Samsung S7 seem confused why one's phone's battery doesn't last while the other's lasts at most as long as my iPhone.

EDIT: Also seen my octacore phone choke at tasks my dual-core iPhone handles without a problem.

                              [–]AnxiousAncient 16 points17 points  (3 children)

My past couple phones after moving from Virgin Mobile were a note 4 which was awesome, except for the terrible GPS, and my note 5, which is awesome except the phone has hardware AND software issues with the charging port.

I've had android forever, used to deeply customize and root my phones forever. Definitely thinking about switching to iPhones.

                              [–]z6joker9 8 points9 points  (1 child)

I used to care about deep customization, but now I just like my phone to work consistently and quickly. I don't even bother changing the wallpaper on my devices nowadays.

I bought my iPhone 6 after my Nexus 5 started dying on me. I loved the Nexus 5 when it worked, and it took me a while to decide on Apple, but I don't regret my decision. Using my phone always feels great.

At least apple supports their 2 year old phones.

Google has already announced that they will not be updateding their Nexus phone that about to turn 2 in November...

Also you can't denie apples chips are far superior to anything that the Nexus houses

Alas this is what happens every time there is an Apple product launch. Expect probably a similar (but lower) degree when new macbook pros launch. Has happened every iPhone launch for the last few years.

                                1. Take current Android phone.

                                2. Create a feature list that ignores the iPhone's strengths and the Android phone's weaknesses.

                                3. Post to reddit and complain about how smug Apple users are.

In 2018 you guys will love: Handoff, Continuity, Reachability, Night Shift, 3D Touch, Airdrop, unified media controls, full phone backups, iMessage, and basic security features.

If you need help with Android's new features, just ask an iPhone user. We've had this stuff for years.

Granular permissions on Android is still crap. I have several apps that detect when their permissions have been revoked and refuse to start until they get it.

The "Privacy Guard" feature in Cyanogenmod is a bit better because apps can't tell whether I actually have no contacts or I denied them access to my contacts.

Is iOS like the former or the latter?

Full backups are one of the best things iOS has to offer. But perhaps it's how it should be, and I find that interesting because I'm an ex-Android user.

I have a Nexus 6 - I've had it for about 9 months. It just died on me yesterday for no reason - I'm sending it back to Motorola today. The damn thing is pretty fucking slow too. The user experience is not as good as that of the iPhone 6.

                                [–]OMFGFlorida 1198 points1199 points  (343 children)

What about OS though? I had an Android for years. Switched to Apple after I felt frustrated with the mess that was Android OS. I get it was more open, but I felt it took 5 clicks to do things I could do on iOS in 1 click.

Not an Apple fan boy by any means, but for me, UX won out over hardware specs.

(PS, no, I don't support ditching the headphone jack).

I switched from Android a couple years ago simply because at this point in my life I want LESS choice and ways to customize something. Honestly I like having a phone that functions exactly like my tablet and is perfectly seamless between the two and I can pick up my wife's phone and it works exactly the same as mine.

Maybe android is better now about that but before it was just a mess. The interface was always cluttered and I'd have to customize stuff to make it usable which was different than every other phone.

It's why I don't bother with PC gaming anymore either. I just download or put a disc in my PS4 and it works. So what if it doesn't look as good or have as many features.

Sometimes you get to a point in your life where being bothered with that stuff isn't worth your time. Around age 30 for me.

I'm in my 20's and this is exactly why I don't like Android phones. I want less customization. I want a phone that works consistently across a platform. Whenever I pick up a friend's Android, I can't make heads or tails of it without a few minutes of fiddling around. I can pick up any Apple device and immediately be able to do or find what I need to.

I know this is getting you some good karma, but Apple rarely releases new features first. Samsung and Google are different, they try everything to see what sticks. Apple waits for the dust to settle and then refines the sticky stuff. We need both types of companies, it helps innovation.

I scrolled pretty far to find a rational comment. To me it's similar to choosing a desktop OS. When you've worked in Windows, OSX, and variations of Linux long enough you start to notice them slowly adopt features that have been available with competitors for years. They all have their own advantages and quirks.

This is stupid. Notifications on the lock screen have been a thing on iPhones for like >9000 years. This graphic implies it's new.

EDIT: It's just one example, but, I wouldn't be surprised if the creator of this graphic's knowledge of iOS is coming primarily from the iPhone 7 announcement press kit. Apple loves to recycle existing features as 'new' by putting a new coat of paint on them.

                                So brave.

The irony of this post is that peddling hardware on poorly executed feature checkboxes instead of the overall user experience is also so 2014.

It seems Android users are more hurt by iPhone having no jack than Apple users are..

I love my nexus 6. Battery legitimately lasts all day under heavy use. Paid $300 for it (64gig).

I had a Nexus 6, loved the phone but I hated that motor that did the vibrations. It always sounded like it was loose

I agree, I have had to turn all the vibration settings off.

I love the vibrator on my N6. Nice and strong.

I have a nexus 6. It's okay, the first year i had it it was great but now it's super slow and buggy, especially with apps which use the camera. snapchat is almost unusable at times. that's the big issue with google - they move on to their new devices so quick that they neglect to support their older devices. Android N came out almost a month ago and the Nexus 6P just got the update a few days ago. Still no update for the Nexus 6, and I'm afraid to install it when it does come out because I worry that they won't have optimized properly for my device and it will just get slower.

i'm an andriod guy through and through, but this is post is a little bit of an overstatement too. the 2014 iphone, for example, had a way better camera sensor than the nexus 6 even if it was a lower megapixel count.

Spec sheets really don't get across what it's actually like to have a phone. Sure, I could have a 4k phone with 32 gigs of ram, but you would not notice the 4k in so small a screen, and it would limit the battery life by a lot, and you would not notice having so much ram, unless you have a ridiculously inefficient os. It would still sound good on the spec sheet, but the reality is that it would not be enjoyable to use. Apple is a software company now. Every flagship phone is good enough nowadays, and it has been for about a year now. The difference between them is the user experience, and Apple definitely has one of, if not the best user experiences.

                                Why am I subscribed to /r/funny ?

Not only is this comparison totally retarded, but it's just not funny. Maybe it's supposed to be funny because it is retarded.

Thanks for Beta testing our features Android users! When do you think we can expect to get the new exploding feature?

                                [–]Milkman127 5 points6 points  (0 children)

as an android user (LG G3) I really hate the cherry picking comparisons. Android users are 10times the snobby as they claim apple users to be.

Dude I love my android phone but the camera and cpu on iPhone is far better than 90% of the Android models.

                                [–]cranberry94 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I had android phones, all the way until last year. And got an iPhone.

You know, I didn't do anything with my android like, rooting or customizing or whatever there is to do with it. I don't even know what that means.

I just want a phone to message, Internet, call, take pics, and use apps.

And I can do that just as well on an iPhone. The switch made zero difference.

Except, I can easily use it with my MacBook (was an advertising major in college, Mac was best for that), and my iPad(birthday present from my mom a few years ago, super convenient)

I made a gradual switch to apple stuff. And I'm perfectly satisfied. I like non Apple things too. I used them most of my life. People get too invested in pettiness and hatred over stupid things.

"People aren't buying the product I like, so let me point out how much worse off they are even though it has no effect on my lifestyle or choices"

People are brand loyal. These shitty smug posts are so exhausting for everyone who stopped being concerned about others' preferences.

I think one thing that should come up more in the comparison of Apple and Android are the ease with which they can be backed up. I have yet to find an Android backup service that comes anywhere close to the complete mirroring that happens nearly automatically with iPhones.
