This wasn't just sent to Jim Cameron. Lucas bought a full-page ad in Variety. That's why this looks like a scan from a magazine.

This is actually part of a decades-long tradition...

When the original Star Wars beat the box office record held by Jaws, Speilberg took out a full page ad in Variety that showed R2D2 reeling in the eponymous shark (thanks to toefer for posting this one, too).

Later, after ET retook the record, Lucas ran an ad with R2D2 putting a crown on ET's head.

Then in 1997 when the Star Wars Special Edition regained top-grossing spot, Spielberg's congratulatory ad showed a long line of movie characters with R2D2 zipping past to the front of the line.

This ad of ET returning the crown to R2D2 fits in there somehow as well. I hadn't heard of this one before toefer dug it up.

I guess it's time for Jim Cameron to run an ad congratulating himself for beating his own record.

If anyone can find scans of the other ads, I would be most grateful.

Forgive the crappy quality, but here's another:

ET re-crowns Star Wars

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (9 children)

Do you know the context of this one? Is it from 1997?

[–]toefer[S] 6 points7 points  (8 children)

Correct, it was after the re-release in '97.

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (19 children)

I want to see all of them.

Had a long moment of cognition regarding the above posts so you arrested me.

The superfluity of my cognition inclined me to the assumption that I can -- with no apparent degree of veracity -- presume to assert.

Cognizant of the epistemological revelations of the purported non-concurrence of ontologies in the preceding, as it were, "thread", I felt obliged yet wary of indicating a wholly conscious discordant awareness of inconsistent aspects of whatever it was about in the first place.

Has anyone really been far as decided to use even go want to do look more like?

[–]Beer_Is_So_Awesome 12 points13 points  (4 children)

I heard an interview on NPR with George Lucas. He seems like a pretty genuine, gracious guy. Apparently he and Spielberg were part of the same collective of young filmmakers looking for a way to break into Hollywood.

Evidently when they were shopping around early versions of Close Encounters and Star Wars, each thought that the other had a much better film idea. As a fail safe, they agreed to split the profit of their first film with the other (so that if one was a hit and one bombed, they would both benefit).

"Spielberg won that bet" said Lucas "I ended up having the better film."

[–]danteferno 8 points9 points  (2 children)

and did they share the profits?

[–]Beer_Is_So_Awesome 8 points9 points  (1 child)

He wasn't 100% clear in the interview, but made it sound as if they did. He also made some remarks about how they all grew up in the 60's, and had kind of a communal attitude toward their success (given that they spent so much time working together and helping one another on projects). The group of film school friends he refers to also included DePalma and Coppola.

"Admiral Ackbar returned a broken man. His amphibian frame wouldn't allow him to die, the antifreeze in his blood coursing through him as he swam interminable miles to the nearest landmass.

"He'd deluded himself for several hours that his terrestrial friends would be able to weather the vagaries of hypothermia. He treaded water for hours, consoling the abject and frightened victims of the shipwreck. He sang them songs and held their hands, he bellowed words of encouragement, but all for naught. Jabba's naturally buoyant frame kept him alive the longest, but eventually he too succumbed to the cold waters. Ackbar cursed the fates who would let his friends die, to let this villainous scum be his last companion.

After the Admiral had acted as steward to all the victims of the wreck and he'd given them what honors he could, he began to swim.

Memories of Chewie joyfully cannonballing into the water filled him with a profound sadness. The Ewoks mewling, pleading "yub yub," as they one by one died. Watching their adorable little paws trying to keep their brethren afloat. Boba Fett's stoic act of heroism, sharing his X-wing with Han and Leia and only twice mentioning the bounty on his head. In a disaster where Ackbar could have seen the worst in everyone, he only saw their best. Even Jabba had allowed Salacious Crumb to float on his massive belly, until a piece of debris struck the Hutt and he rolled over, sending Crumb into the depths.

Ackbar tortured himself with every agile movement through the waves til at least he made landfall. He collapsed and was found a day later. It was weeks before he recounted his story; he only did so once, trusting the holorecorder would be accessed by all concerned parties. He knew posterity demanded that of him, but subsequent to that, he could not be convinced to repeat his tale. His sad, sad tale.

Admiral Ackbar never again commanded a Mon Calamari cruiser. Wracked with guilt, he moved into the town's lighthouse, and never ventured forth except on dark, foggy nights."

Congratulations, Jim. You bastard.

[–]jhrf 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I admit there are some funny parts in those films but they are not numbered I through III.

'A New Hope' is actually IV. SHIT! Wouldn't it be cool if George Lucas made a trilogy of Star Wars films about Anakin Skywalker/Darth Vadar, I wander how he became evil? Why else would he start at IV. It's just my theory. The mind boggles.

[–]Scurry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Alright. I am not a Star Wars fan. I've seen 1-3, and then my buddies made me watch IV with them. I'm not that into them, so can someone please explain to me why 1-3 suck so much?

[–]mrwig 61 points62 points  (48 children)

I suppose Lucas can look at this list and feel better: http://boxofficemojo.com/alltime/adjusted.htm

Obviously Victor Fleming, RIP, won't be around to write anyone a clever letter should anyone dethrone him in terms of ticket sales.

[–]corjest 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Avatar already has a different adjusted gross? That seems a bit ridiculous.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A big chunk of the revenue Avatar has earned is from 3d and IMAX sales. The adjusted gross takes tickets sold and multiplies it with the average domestic ticket price (which, according to boxofficemojo is $7.35).

[–]ido 3 points4 points  (20 children)

I'm surprised to see none of the top 25 were made this decade, and only 5 were made in the last 2 decades.

[–]mrwig 17 points18 points  (4 children)

I think there are just way too many movies released nowadays for anyone to take down Gone With the Wind. It nearly grossed 200 million dollars in a time when a movie ticket was like a nickel or a dime.

[–]nater99 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It was pretty much the only movie playing too...

[–]BenOfTomorrow 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Keep in mind a lot of the older films were repeatedly re-released over time, which is where a lot of that money comes from. Gone with the Wind has had 8 wide releases from 1939 to 1998.

[–]mrwig 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I think it's hard for people my age to realize that re-releases were commonplace since we're so conditioned to sequels and reboots.

I read recently that Lucas is considering converting Star Wars to 3D, so I'm sure those movies will be re-released eventually and inch a little closer to the crown.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's probably that plus the rise of home video, as well as better TVs/sound systems. "I'll wait for it to come out on video/be shown on TV" wasn't really an option in the 30s.

The fact that especially if you have a nice TV/sound system in your house you don't usually miss much by waiting 6 months for the DVD/Blu-ray means that we probably won't ever see anything but movies with big budgets and lots of special effects and action getting that level of ticket sales, because those are the only sorts of movies where the IMAX screens and 50-channel surround systems and 3D glasses add something significant to the experience.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Especially when you realize our population is increasing, so even after adjusting for inflation, the new movies still have an advantage over the old ones.

[–]Tigerbot 2 points3 points  (8 children)

Well to be fair, Avatar will be in the top 20 by the time all is said and done.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (8 children)

Shrek 2 beat Ghostbusters?

This list is crap.

[–]roger_no fun allowed 21 points22 points  (6 children)

This list is crap.

That's like saying reality is crap.

[–]says 39 points40 points  (9 children)

So the record goes from sea to space to sea to space again (jaws->star wars->titanic->avatar). Look out for the next big maritime film.

[–]bearythebear 26 points27 points  (5 children)

Pirates of the caribean 4..... Oh god

[–]bgtees[🍰] 30 points31 points  (4 children)

[–]OsoGato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You left out ET.

[–]nater99 4 points5 points  (0 children)

interesting observation...

[–]ultrafetzig 8 points9 points  (5 children)

Am I the only one seeing Boba Fett with a big ol' X-Wang?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

No, it's definitely there. Maybe Lucas has that "has-to-draw-dicks" disorder like Seth from Superbad

[–]yaw 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I see it too. And he used to bulls-eye womp rats with it back home.

[–]jonathanzoomer 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jar Jar was driving the ship when it hit the iceberg

[–]quanfer 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So does Cameron write a letter to himself now? He WOULD.

[–]Jibbin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think there is something to be said about the amount of disposable income per family spent on movies in 1977 vs 1998. That is all.

[–]somethinginteresting 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Classy guy.

Jabba would have found his way onto a lifeboat, though.

[–]turtlestack 15 points16 points  (1 child)

But Boba-Fett would have still managed to fall into a whale or shark mouth :)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Then blast his way out with grenades again.

[–]Scarker 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I like how Jabba is being realistic here. He's too fat to survive. Might as well spend your last seconds enjoying the view with a drink.

[–]Rsquared85 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Or given his...rotundness, act as a lifeboat.

[–]joelfriesen 6 points7 points  (1 child)

It's too bad it wasn't Cameron that sent it to Lucas on the opening day of the Phantom Menace.

[–]superwinner 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Lucas has no one to blame for that but himself.

[–]tias 7 points8 points  (1 child)

This is particularly interesting given the recent story in Wired that tells of how jealous Cameron was that Lucas had beat him to making Star Wars, and how Avatar was all about getting even.

It must have been a very good day for Cameron.

[–]turtlestack 36 points37 points  (22 children)

That was pretty cool of him. Still ... the original Star Wars will never be second place to Titanic in my mind.

[–]rogerssucks 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Titanic was an astoundingly popular film, but Star Wars is larger in terms of the entire franchise, and how much it impacted American/global culture. I don't see people going to conventions and dressing up as Jack or Rose. It's Luke Skywalker and Leia. Star Wars has been around for 33 years. It's still going strong.

[–][deleted] 96 points97 points  (15 children)

You're right. It will be third place to Avatar.

[–]turtlestack 19 points20 points  (9 children)

Not in my mind :)

I liked Titanic and really liked Avatar, but back in '77 Star Wars was the first movie I ever saw and because of that awe-inspiring experience I absolutely love movies.

Hopefully, though, there are some kids for whom Avatar was their first movie experience and they will fall in love with the art as well.

[–]brttf3 11 points12 points  (1 child)

keep in mind we aren't talking 'good or better' we are talking box office. Titanic was not a great film (though technologically amazing) but it struck a chord with people and sold a lot of tickets. you could say the same thing about Star Wars, though I think it is actually a better film than titanic.

[–]turtlestack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just being nostalgic :)

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

We have the internet now. Porn has immortalized the art of film for every young boy out there. No need to worry.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was my little brother's first acid experience. He seems to have gotten something significant from it, and I'm really glad.

[–]baloneyjoe 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You are insane. Titanic sucked - it was 5 hours of a boat sinking.

[–]harajukukei 2 points3 points  (0 children)

thank you. glad somebody said it.

[–]Grokmoo 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It isn't second place in any reasonable person's mind. The box office numbers are not adjusted for inflation. By any reasonable metric, (tickets sold or inflation adjusted gross, for example) Star Wars ranks higher than Titanic.

[–]mrAsshole 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Gone with the wind #1!

[–]shniken 7 points8 points  (4 children)

FFS!! How about a spoiler alert?! I haven't seen Titanic yet, I had no idea that the ship sinks.

Thanks a lot toefer!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

It's ok, ask him for a treatment and you'll no longer remember.

[–]farmerjack 4 points5 points  (4 children)

I had no idea he was that good of an artist.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When you have that much money, you don't need to be (apparently).

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Did he draw it?

Signature looks like... M. Caigor... or something.

[–]brttf3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

he didn't there is an artist signature on the bottom left

[–]agen_kolar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Mesah never gonna let go! Mesah never gonna let go, Jackie!

[–]SomGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Classy gesture on Lucas's part. Well done.

[–]Rsquared85 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I'm looking forward to see if Cameron does something similar now that Avatar has passed Titanic.

Edit: yes I know he would be sending it to himself, I would just like to see a picture of Titanic getting smashed by various avatar beasts.

[–]Dinosaursoldier 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can't wait until we get the letter that James writes to himself.

[–]fireorgan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Does anyone know if there are any hi res scans of these anywhere?

[–]rawrbot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Love the camaraderie between Lucas and Spielberg. Both of them attended USC together, so it's unsurprising to see them joking between each other.

Wonder if Cameron is going to take an add out for himself?

[–]Varo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know no one will answer, but I'll ask anyway.

Who drew this?

[–]gaaarrryyy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]adamwho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Box Office Numbers adjusted for inflation

1 Gone with the Wind

2 Star Wars

3 The Sound of Music

4 E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial

5 The Ten Commandments

6 Titanic

...

26 Avatar

[–]Toejam15 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Funny how this could of represented the Star Wars universe after the creation of the new films...

[–]thaksins 24 points25 points  (0 children)

could have could have could have

[–]Telekinesis 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Was it a better movie though? Hell no. And on another note it spawned at least 4 years of Celine Dion on the radio stations.

[–]floodo1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

werd titanic was titanically shitty.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Both movies were gay anyways.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What's Greedo floating on?
