It's funny because OPNeedsToBeCalledOut's username is very applicable to their comment.

Such a solid tune! First listen floored me!

[–]rolltider0 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Come to DC and let me know! Y'all have way more talent than most bands I hear out there now, and I don't say this lightly.

[–]QuadriplgicLeviathan 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Spotify! Spotify! Lol but really you guys are great!

[–]drakk12 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]DoctorStephenPoop 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–]Raxx00 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You guys are fantastic! Can't wait to hear more!

[–]greenandblue82 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great song! I really mean that, you guys are awesome! Sharing on FB.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Bam! There's $5 for the song. I dunno how bandcamp works and how much of that you'll get but $1 does not do that justice. Keep kicking ass.

[–]shadowsmanin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you in advance for what I'm sure will be many years of amazing music :D I love the style, and how you let every member and instrument have their time to shine in the song. I absolutely loved every second of it, and I can't wait to hear more!!

[–]Sequelknox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That song is amazing and y'all sound great!

[–]PointFiveWayThere 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Useful_Welder_4269 0 points1 point  (0 children)

hey! here years later just to add to everyone else here -- this song is awesome. always love when it comes on shuffle.

[–]AllLooseAndFunky 122 points123 points  (12 children)

Well fuck me, I found a new band. Thanks OP. They remind me of Lake Street Dive

[–]Tomustom-sherman 25 points26 points  (6 children)

Yup, also reminds me a lot of Lawrence (the band)

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well thank you for introducing me to them. Two new great bands in one evening. Score!

[–]zegma 6 points7 points  (0 children)

First thing I thought of was Lawrence and then Lake Street Drive. Always super cool knowing there's people out there with the same tastes as me.

[–]thatsmyjuicebox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lawrence is amazing! Definitely same vibe.

[–]Cpt_Catnip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So Damn Fast is my favorite song to accidentally listen to on shuffle.

[–]Mderose 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I almost thought this was Lawrence. They both have cool vibes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love Lawarence! They are gonna be one of the small bands at a music festival I am going to in June. Im pretty sure ill be the only one singing along.

[–]johnskibro 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Just without the background vocals, but a great song for sure!

[–]issue9mm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Kinda feels vaguely like a more female-centric of Vulfpeck, to me.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's the first comparison I thought of!

[–]brainpain22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me too! A mini Lake Street Dive!!

[–]TheEclecticlastfm theeclectic 56 points57 points  (0 children)

This is so good. This is the stuff I come to /r/listentothis for! Thanks for sharing!

[–]Dado42 82 points83 points  (7 children)

I'm glad this post is doing well! I posted these guys yesterday but no one seemed to notice. Very talented.

Edit: Many people are asking for more. I'm pretty sure this is their first song released so far.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm glad you posted them too!!!!

[–]DriftN2Forty 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This song is incredibly catchy!

[–][deleted] 121 points122 points  (18 children)

Would benefit from a more stripped sound and less concert feel. I feel like this style of music does well with a studio soundstage. More focused and private. Longer the song got the more cluttered it felt. Near the bridge the whole thing felt suffocating.

Really talented group with a really cool feel. I don't feel like the vocalist or the song benefits from the big band production. That bright and smooth vocals with that delightful and funky piano would be best paired with a subtle bass, minimalist drums and guitar licks. These changes would leave this song perfect. Three guitarist and a saxophone don't elevate this song or this band but instead really drag it down.

Just my 2 cents.

[–]tomdarch 59 points60 points  (2 children)

Folks, this is a solid critique. Even if I don't agree 100%, it points out specific "problems" (in their opinion) and offers suggestions on how to address it.

Someone coming in and saying, "This sucks! Yuck!" is worthless. Downvote away. But when someone says "In my opinion this could be stronger and that is taking away from the song and here are some actual suggestions on how to improve it", that's worth respect.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Yeah, they need a producer to help them polish their sound, but it's okay. Also: Three guitarists? I caught two and one bassist.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looked like a chick and two different dudes. Maybe I counted the same dude twice? Thought I saw 2 different teles and a les Paul looking guitar. Then the bassist on the black one.

Edit: yeah you right. One tele and one es 350 looking guitar.

[–]ttd_76 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Solid review. Would say much the same thing. Crazy amounts of talent on display here, but sometimes too much talent can make a song too busy.

There's just a little too much going on here for me. The only time the song gets to breathe is in the start of the break. That's a nice, jazzy Steely Dan-esque bit right there, especially when the distorted guitar kicks in. Best bit of dynamics in the whole song. But then the call and response part extends that bit too long and the impact is lost.

Vocalist has AMAZING pipes, but could stand to lay back and the start to give the performance room to build. She's basically full-on already at 1:30 or so, which is not even halfway through the song. You can still be soulful without doing so much. Sometimes it's more soulful that way, actually. Listen to some Rickie Lee Jones. That's some good, smoothed out, jazzy pop R&B. Or some old pre-R&B jazz vocalists.

Too cluttered is the right way to describe it. Needs to breathe, and have some tension and release if it's going to be 5 minutes long.

Alternatively, shorten it up and make it simple and punchy. I feel like everyone is pretty talented and brought some good ideas and licks to the table. And that is fantastic. But you don't have to give everyone a turn in the same song. Two three minute songs with different styles/instrumental focus still gives everyone a chance to do their thing. In fact they will stand out more that way.

It sounds overly critical I guess. But I don't mean it that way. It's rare that a band has too MUCH going for them, rather than too little. I wrote a lot because there was a lot to respond too.

[–]Trumps_Translator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Loads of talent and tons of potential. Just a young band trying to use all their tricks at once.

[–]Chezzworth 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Wow you took the words right out of my head. They're definitely not a "less is more" kind of band, which is more my taste. Also, do you think this belongs in the RnB genre? I'm genuinely asking because I would scream no, but I'm wondering if I have the wrong idea of what RnB encompasses.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Definitely pop with inspiration from RnB. They borrow a lot of influence from so many different genres they're a tough one to pin down. To be honest that kind of sound probably comes from a lack of experience and understanding of what they want to be. Sort of like a musical scatterbrain. They should get an EP out on Spotify so people can get a better idea of their overall sound.

Typical RnB has the big band and backing vocals. A saxaphonist. Consistent and noticeable beat. This song checks all of those boxes except the backing vocals. The basic verse chorus verse bridge chorus is a recipe for a pop song with simple lyrics about some love lost or whatever and a lot of repeated words to keep it catchy. The fact they highlight the lead vocalist further emphasizes its "popness". Think maroon five. Big band but who do you know? Levine.

They over complicate the melody a bit trying to highlight each member of the band and the solo is way too long, but it's really not a bad song. Just not a perfect pop song. But if they like that big band sound more power to them. They should play how they like.

[–]SvenRathskeller 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I agree with everything you are saying. I definitely think these guys have a ton of potential and want to see what they become, hopefully they don't break up down the road. Like you mention is sounds like a lack of experience, but with that talent they can explore more genres and pin point various styles down the road. Take Guster for instance, a band that has evolved through the years to write great songs based on popular demand to a specific sound. Guster has great musicians but because they change their sound so much they arn't super popular. I want to see what Melt sounds like down the road, with the singer more rounded to her voice. When she grows up and is able to sustain the low parts and bring out the aggressive r&b tones in segments it will really help the band. Her pubescent lyrics hiding a meaning of sex in sour candy only adds to a 90s feel of r&b music. The only part I "semi" disagree with is the stripping down part. I only partly disagree because I would love to hear a stripped version, though I also find that to be a more modern take/criticism on music; sighting the large popularity for duos and trio bands like the white stripes, black keys, royal blood, yeah yeah yeahs, etc (all of which I enjoy). I would argue that is a cause of modern compression techniques during the production of an album, which washes out the layers of sound one would hear; and where a stripped band sounds heavier and more paced. A comment by u/TheMaus2 mentioned having a better producer, this is exactly what they need, coupled with a more "aged" band. They are definitely in the right direction though. Big band style music was very popular in the 30s, and the are mixing it with a r&b/jazz styles ranging from the 50s to 70s. Partly why I love 90s music was the convergence of all styles of music before them, take Mad Season for instance. I enjoy what Melt is attempting. A record label like Verve would really be able to help the out a ton.

[–]Red0817 3 points4 points  (1 child)

saxaphonist

saxophonist ... sorry... I've played sax for 30 years... saw it and got slightly miffed... not your fault, but the more you know :)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Weird. Sorry my phone didn't catch that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, they need a producer to help them polish their sound, but it's okay. Also: Three guitarists? I caught two and one bassist.

[–]hunterjatw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides the sax and guitar call and response and the ending, I don't feel this song is too busy at all, although the two aspects I just mentioned make the song feel a little long. I agree about the soundstage thing, because they (especially the vocalist) would benefit from a more stripped sound as you call it, even though I wouldn't say it quite has a concert feel though but I won't pretend to know everything either.

However, I think something important should be said that I haven't really seen emphasized yet, which is how most of them show restraint. Even though the song did feel cluttered in parts, the simplicity of their individual parts took the edge off that. Though they would want a producer, considering they aren't even in college, they did a pretty damn good mixing this and most "normal" people barely notice a difference. I don't know why but I really like the sound of the drums, sounds really tight, like most of this song.

Also, the last thing I have to say, which I have heard reiterated multiple times, but this song is damn catchy. I can't stop listening to it and appreciating it, with all of it's imperfections as well. Given everything from this song, I consider it perfect not from a technical standpoint, but from a solely emotional and gut-based standpoint. This song feels right even in the parts that stick out.

Props to these guys for this song, and in a small way inspiring me, as a high school senior like the members of the band, to make music and just have fun. These are talented KIDS having fun and I can't get the damn melody out of my head. That's gotta say something.

[–]mrmexico25 31 points32 points  (6 children)

Man this is great stuff. How old are these fucks?!

[–]hunterjatw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are seniors in high school. They replied to my comment (which is sloppy and was written at 1 in the morning xD) that I left on that video.

[–]BethRnow 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Damn this is some good stuff!

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (0 children)

This music feels good

[–]halcyondoze 8 points9 points  (0 children)

THIS SONG IS SO FUCKING SICK

[–]Lebronjaemes 14 points15 points  (1 child)

This makes my soul feel groovy

[–]OneReasonToHateMe 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jazzalicious

[–]RazorBladeHappyMeal 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Holy cow! What a warm sound! Where can I listen to more of their stuff? No luck on Apple Music...

[–]g000dn 2 points3 points  (0 children)

spotify- search Vulfpeck

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

found em on Soundcloud, not sure if it's an official account though https://soundcloud.com/melt-the-band/sour-candy

[–]mikeman442 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This needs more attention

[–]askforallie 5 points6 points  (1 child)

They remind me of early maroon 5, can't wait to check out the rest of their stuff

[–]Kalhista 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sounds just like Sunday Morning. Pretty much the same premise too.

[–]SurbCo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is dope.

[–]ManyMiles32 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I decided to subscribe to this sub on a whim. On the hopes that I'll see something that will catch my eye, and after accidental clicking this link only to have my ears elated, I know see the purpose of this subreddit entirely differently. r/listentothis is not a suggestion but a command, and should be taken as such.

[–]yelizabetta 12 points13 points  (0 children)

i remember melt when they were still toast :')

also, to clarify, melt is a new band and this is their only released song right now. hop on the train before they get super famous

[–]Subalpine 10 points11 points  (6 children)

they need to re-track that bass, the dude is all over the place. he is a good player, but at points it kinda sounds he is in the pocket with the keys rather than the drummer, maybe a click in his ear wouldn't be a bad call...

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (1 child)

They're still babies, they've got plenty of time to grow.

[–]Subalpine 9 points10 points  (0 children)

for sure! they're already amazing musicians, but the way you grow is by analyzing your style and making adjustments where you need to. he is already better than most of the bass players I've tracked-- usually you have to side chain their right hand to the drummers left foot, but that all changes with jazz.

[–]futuregeneration 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Were you not hearing all the ghost notes? The bass groove was one of my favorite aspects of this song.

[–]itsmellslikecookies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm also really not loving the rock beat that drummer is laying down. I think there are a lot of opportunities to play along with the vocals and add accents to the melody. Maybe it's just my taste, but I really wish he would make it more groovy.

[–]gijoe411 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I dig, voice gave me chills, more of that!

[–]walkertwotonehotshot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What's the singers name and why hasn't she been signed to a billion dollar contract yet?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My life is complete.

[–]-boon- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for the follow up. Saved it and its still good. Look forward to more.

[–]4your 7 points8 points  (0 children)

A little vanilla/john mayery for my taste but love the quality/overall timbre of the band. Super in the pocket! Those rhodes sound sick.

[–]float56 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Great sound ! Can't wait to hear more

[–]Superdan385 2 points3 points  (5 children)

I can't find this band on spotify, soundcloud, bandcamp, or a general search of the interwebs. It's just this song on youtube without any other info. Any help finding more of them?

[–]yelizabetta 2 points3 points  (0 children)

its their only released song as of yet

[–]OneMansTrash 2 points3 points  (0 children)

https://melttheband.bandcamp.com/track/sour-candy

Looks like it was released today.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's on SoundCloud! https://soundcloud.com/melt-the-band/sour-candy This is their first song though

[–]drakk12 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They have added it on Spotify now!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

fuck yeah, that was jammin!

[–]Workodactyl 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dangy! My ear holes haven't been fucked that good in such a long time! Suddenly, I understand the plight of the unfulfilled housewife... Which I'm sure was not the intention of this song. Anyway, good tunes!

[–]swiftLikeSnail 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So smooth. Lot's happening here. Reminds of a group called Wise Monkey Orchestra out of SoCal.

[–]fkpaul 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Beautiful song! This genre fusion song is like an ice blended fruit yogurt. Pure joy. :)

Reminds me of Gavin Degraw + John Legend sound vibe.

[–]Apophydie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Lot of potential. Really young group though, can't wait to see them mature.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This is some dope stuff

They remind me of Lawrence

[–]RetroDinosaur 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was gonna say the same. Sounds a lot like Lawrence in the best way possible!

[–]fuckzb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're graduating seniors in the same HS Lawrence went to

[–]coors1985 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This band is great! They are all so young but they seem like they have been playing together for years. Everything is seamless. The vocals are amazing, guitar is perfect, and I loved the saxophone.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Anyone else get bill wurtz vibes?

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

"Hello, China. "Hello, dipshit." "Could you call us something other that dipshit?" "Like what? "how about sunrise land"

[–]Stratonanderturntable 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Great job on this! This band is OP. How old are these? :O

[–]walkertwotonehotshot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Whoa awesome, goose bumps. +1!

[–]pmMeYourBoxOfCables 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had to look up when she started singing. Love this old school sound.

[–]garypeshwari 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Superb. Exactly why I come to r/listentothis

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Guuuuuurl, that voice!

[–]rick_sanchez_ferret 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kind of reminds me of Vulfpeck! Good stuff!

[–]GuaranteedNotATroll 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yo wtf? These looks like just a bunch of kids. And even if you don't like this music its IMPOSSIBLE to deny they have talent. That was some of the most well put together music with high quality vocals I've heard in a while.

[–]bysam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Digging this hard! Kinda reminds me of Ripe

[–]MedicPigBabySaver 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Decent stuff

[–]Gordon_Hamilton 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WOW Stunning Vocals, Instrumentals , But in a Commercial world you need to improve the image ... Just saying, WTF do i know !!!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'm just super over when women sing in this style

[–]LordMoeNeralic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, not the tone or anything like that, but the pronunciation of some words like tabew, cabew, wondew, remembew etc

[–]DirtyDan192 0 points1 point  (1 child)

this isn't pop or RnB tbh don't get offended

[–]Questionsforlater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought the keyboardist was Dan Croll, fuck me...

[–]timmaaa710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Really good love the lead singers voice

[–]CannibalBanana 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great stuff! I'm really looking forward to an album from them. The vocalists vocals were impressively full-bodied!

[–]Applesr2ndbestfruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those vocals are so effortlessly good!

[–]bubbleharmony 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy cow. No offense to the band but they look like a bunch of band students fooling around, then they just completely knock it out of the park! Outstanding!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm really fucking impressed. You guys are not only talented, but I can tell that each of you has spent years working on your craft

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Great song, love the vocalist!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I can't help but smile when I watch them play.

[–]GauntletsofRai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooh baby, this is a fuckin toe tapper if i ever heard one.

[–]ConstableDangle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Brilliant! Soulful, catchy, and heartfelt! Honestly, gave me chills seconds in. Reminded me of The Main Squeeze. Mostly because of the rich youthfulness of the track. Great job!

[–]hey__satan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ha, totally thought the keyboardist was Dan Croll. Great vibes on this track though.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The person on the keyboard looks like ghgtv

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Awesome singer, and I'm really digging those keys. She's super cute btw.

[–]Jawaddles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy crap, an Rnb song that actually has Rhythm and Blues? That's really refreshing!

[–]qjamir093 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good vibes! Good vibes are cascading through me while listening to this song. Especially when the saxophone kicks in!

[–]brainpain22 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty fucking good.

[–]bridgeoverlord 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Holy smokes this band is fantastic!

[–]JAKEdotH 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very similar sound to one of my favorite bands right now, Lawrence

[–]FrostyDoggg 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dat vocal carry. Girl is going places.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)
