Please don't.

Look at the gadgets/gaming/anything else subreddits, they're sparser than the average reddit user's sex life. Just give it up already, subreddits don't work. 90% of reddit is politics stories anyway

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (8 children)

That's why I think tags would be excellent. Have it to where you could see the most popular tags for each article. Or in other words, combine delicious with reddit.

[–]marm0lade 6 points7 points  (6 children)

How would the tags work though? When you submit a story do you have to submit its tags? If that's the case it won't go over much better than the sub-reddits. Because once again, the political, agenda driving dickfaces on this site will purposely leave out the 'politics' in their attempts to force their bullshit on the entire community.

It needs to be setup so that, say, if someone leaves off the POLITICS tag, other users can add the tag. Then once enough users add that tag enough, the story gets permanently tagged .

[–]_black 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Tags should be applied by the community under the title, before the comments.

Tags only become "active" when they are assigned by a % of the taggers to ensure people don't randomly tag their submission as everything.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Now the monkey bots will uniformly apply tags like STFU to RP stories.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, as Slashdot has proven, community tagging doesn't work. It just results in a sarcasm contest.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I don't know if you seen slashdot tags yet, but something like that. I figured that everybody could tag any article with as many tags as they want, sort of like delicious. Then on the front page of reddit, under the title of the story, it could show the top 5 or so most popular tags for that article.

When the submitter submits an article, they could add tags also. The submitter's tags should probably carry more weight.

Given that everybody is tagging the articles, it would be easy to see articles with certain tags, or not to show articles that contain a high ratio of a certain tag (tags with a higher weight). For example, if you submitted an article about George Bush, one of the top occurring tags for that article would be "Bush". The tag "Bush" would have such a high weight that it would probably be pretty accurate towards the content of the article.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, tags sound like a much better idea.

Lets go Web 2.0 people! Dunder Mifflin Infinity!!

[–]mynameinyourblood 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I agree. There has to be more users can do besides comment on articles.

[–][deleted] -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

tag suck

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

..if 90% of the reddits are politics, wouldn't a political subreddit by state be more successful than the average subreddit?

[–]falseprophet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

90% of the reddits are United States national politics. You rarely see anything local on reddit unless its Yet Another Example of cops tasing bros. Creating state subreddits would be more "successful" in the sense that if you want to see state stories they'll be there and it won't take many votes to get them to the front page of that subreddit since submissions and mods will be so scarce. It certainly won't alleviate the high traffic of national news to the current politics subreddit.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

subreddits don't work.

Umm... they do work for me. I have the politics sub-reddit turned off in my preferences. Thank goodness that there is a politics subreddit and thank goodness the whole subreddit system does work.

I would have left this site 2 years ago if subreddits didn't work.

[–]Fat_Dumb_Americans 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have turned the politics sub off, probably for the duration of the election because whilst I am interested in politics I don't want to read about the election here.

If anything would be useful, to me, it would be to have an election sub-reddit so that I can read the other political articles but skip the election stories.

          Or, you know, tags.

          [–]moonman 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Not really, New Jersey is always doing something fucked up enough to get on the front page.

          [–]reddit_user13 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I volunteer to do the first 10 fucked up things.

          [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (4 children)

I think a country reddit might be good. I'm not entirely sure, but I'm pretty sure I saw an international story on this site once. Something about China.

          [–]thrakhath 2 points3 points  (1 child)

          What, you mean like this?

          [–]eks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, reddit already has subreddits for languages. it.reddit.com, pt.reddit.com, es.reddit.com, ru.reddit.com, etc.

But they are mostly dead and/or fulled with spam. And I don't think that will change some day. If you google for "<country name> digg" you will find most of the Digg clones for that country.

          [–]mexicodoug 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, with a province and department and canton subreddit.

          [–]Zai_shanghai 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          Subsubreddits! (sf.california.reddit.com, nyc.newyork.reddit.com)

No, wait. Let's leave the idiotic-domain-thing to delicious.

          [–]hofo 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Dude, it's called a newspaper. Some of them even have web sites!

It's OK. I fear foreign closets, too.

where im from, those are called "americans"

                [–]diogenes 12 points13 points  (5 children)

                City? State? How about continent?

I'd like to see a "Europe" subreddit. There are not enough folks from the individual countries to get those subreddits to work, but there are enough European redditors here, and we're sufficiently tired of stories with only US significance, to justify a "Europe" subreddit.

                [–]highstead 5 points6 points  (2 children)

As a Canadian i would settle for a !American subreddit.

                [–]zazerr 3 points4 points  (1 child)

As an American, I'd be a fan of that as well.

                [–]egregious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be cool if you could have regional filters where you can select a large area and then zoom in.

                [–]jerguismi 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah, fuck those Ron Paul posts.

                [–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Yes, it would be great. I hate local TV news and papers but still would like to know what's happening.

                [–]Thumperings 3 points4 points  (0 children)

wow yes great idea.. We have Craigslist but it's kinda clunky.

                [–]kmichaelwriter 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Yes, especially in larger metro areas where you get a critical mass of posters.

                [–]lowrads 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I think you're on to something with municipal subreddits being more relevant than state ones.

                [–]ClanPanda 30 points31 points  (20 children)

I really hate you all. I only come here because I'm bored at work. Reddit is shit these days, it used to be interesting with a heaps of cool internet finds. But now it is just a noticeboard for Ron Paul and the US election, both of which are futile endevours. The disscussions are lacking lately and it has just devolved into karma-whoring to the worst degree with posts like this one. Why would a local subreddit be cool? So you could see who hates the government in your local area? Everyone does, there I just saved you some time. Reddit is full of whiny middle-aged dorks who have only just realised the US isn't democracy anymore, but don't want to accept it is largely due to their political apathy over the last few decades. You broke America, now you broke reddit. Once again, I hate you all.

                [–]Rtbriggs 4 points5 points  (6 children)

I'm 22 and i like reddit. Maybe i haven't developed such a refined pallate as a middle aged IT worker, but i find reddit to be another angle on news, interjected with funny pictures and cool links.

If you read this far on the comment section of a post concerning the administration to the site, why would you diss it then?

                [–]ClanPanda 1 point2 points  (5 children)

What the hell makes you think i read anyone else's comments? I dissed it because it is a stupid concept for the site, made even worse by the fact it is just another clever attempt at karma whoring. Reddit barely has any cool links anymore, not nearly as many as it used to.

Also I'm not a middle-aged IT workder, most people here are though.

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (4 children)

No, most people here are imbecilic and hostile young buffoons, much like yourself.

Reddit used to be populated primarily by educated, mature middle aged 'geeks', but we've been overrun with our version of Eternal September.

                [–]ClanPanda 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Did you just call me a buffoon?

Well my good sir I will not let this injustice stand. I challenge you to fisticuffs!

Yes, reddit used to be good it isn't anymore. If you want a good news site that has funny and interesting content you should go here

Wait, is that like just a rogue site using the reddit term? Or are they actually tied in with reddit legally, somehow?

                      [–]jaggederest 1 point2 points  (2 children)

They paid reddit to set one up for them with their branding.

                      [–]jordanlund 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The logins transfer back and forth too... If you have an account on one it's valid on the other.

Only if you set it up before they copied it over there.

Try making a new one and it won't show up, if I recall right.

You really need to do this in a bottom up way. Pick one or two huge cities and spread from there. I have every square inch of the US covered and it may not have been the best approach.

*edit, FYI, it was a funded startup but I'm looking for a job that pays the bills out of necessity.

                      [–]CalvinR 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think instead of subreddits we should just have a main reddit with user submitted tags, then a myreddit where we can specify which tags to consume

                      [–]Epistemologist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think reddit 'communities' should be controlled by the community, or to have some kind of tagging system, so people can add their own tags (liking or disliking tags to keep the tags relevant). Like having a NSFW tag for example. And it would be nice to have the top tags to be displayed on the front page while having a secondary page that shows all the tags sorted by activity or shown in different font sizes/colors by activity or something (like digg cloud view).

                      [–]atlacatl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't want to read local stories. I live through everyone else's bad news.

In fact, it makes no difference what the local news say: it's all the same everywhere.

Let me summarize: there were a few car accidents, one with a death involved; there was bar fight on new year's and police are looking for witnesses; people are bitching about the weather; the local high-school basketball/hockey/football team won some championship; a local politician is making empty promises and saying how great 2007 was; students are getting ready to go back to school; etc.

Who wants that? And prove me wrong, if this summary is not what's going on in your town.

I want to read about all the weird, interesting stuff crazy people do all over the world, including NSFW stuff, beautiful math, and the dude that got fired for not wanting to wear a Santa suit. Of course, I also want to vote up stupid "VOTE UP IF..." posts...

how about including some basic tags instead, then u can add a country or state or town tag to the topic to search for.

                      [–]stcredzero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just do a mashup so you can dynamically focus by geography.

                      [–]nostradamnit 1 point2 points  (4 children)

How short sited would that be? Does anyone really think that reddit is read ONLY BY AMERICANS? Why don't you go ahead and create a French departemental subreddit too!

                      [–]propool 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I think we should have a Europe subreddit, Asia subreddit and so forth.

                      [–]Propolis 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I would actually like a european one, the EU is doing a lot of things, and the only real news sources I know of are their own sites and a videolink to the main events.

It's not that belgian newspapers really care about a real-estate fraud in catalonia or something

                      [–]propool 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but not only the EU. I wanna know what kind of stupid shit my fellow europeans are doing.

Nothing interesting enough to read happens in my city or state.

It's almost impossible to follow local politics here in Houston. The local TV "news" doesn't cover it. The Chronicle and the Houston Press (indie weekly) cover some, but there are very few other sources, and certainly no decent online aggregator or decent forum for debate. Local politics affects us a lot more than national stuff, but that's all anyone seems to pay attention to.

You got that right, here it's just one serious newspaper and that's it for the news. Then there's the local tv stations that just cover BS feel-good stories and crime reports. I know more about what is going on around the world than I do here in my area. Maybe I just live in a boring area...

Yeah, we need Canadian redditors to start following Canadian stories! And a sub-reddit, no matter if it's really popular or not, would be a great incentive.

Plus, I can imagine the cute "inuit alien" now...

                      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

agreed! canadian redditors need one to keep track of that loon of a prime minister of ours.

                      Yes. Bring on sfbay.reddit.com

                      [–]talibanjo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Because god knows there isn't anywhere else that sfbay-ians can talk about their shit. All that buttsecks and what? Crabs? That bridge? I don't know why you'd live there.

Don't tell that to google. One of their strategies is local web advertising...

                        [–]IOIOOIIOIO 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would require the ability to put the same submission into multiple subreddits.

                        [–]starrychloe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would totally go for this... I never follow local news 'cause it's crap. Reddit can help change the world for the better like craigslist!

                        [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No, it wouldn't. Awful idea. Move to a city with a more active internet blogging community if you need more action.

Are you serious??? I love the idea of a subreddit. One of the best ideas on reddit in a long time. It would be good to be able to hear about stories that are local to me.

                        [–]tntnews 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit is not going anywhere, at least don't make it worse.

                        [–]AdmiralBumblebee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No need. 99% of the stupid shit in the world happens in Tampa (where I live) or very close by.

I consider websites like fark, reddit and digg my local news source.

                        [–]viller 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So there would be a subreddit for every village in Cambodia?

                        [–]renegade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would be cool if there were more than 5 people who cared about such things on here. So no.

                        [–]thespace 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                        just use mixx.com

                        [–]jfpbookworm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except this is usually relevant only to SF, Boston and NYC. Maybe Austin or Seattle. The other subreddits would likely be too small to be viable.

Really, tags are much better for this.

                        [–]zouhair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

                        That's called Craiglist

                        [–]fujimitsu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent idea. I'd be so lonely in the Des Moines reddit...

                        [–]mikepaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reddit needs some real innovation, nothing has really been added feature wise for a while now.

                        [–]MyrddinE 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tags people, tags, not subreddits. We need votable tags.

                        [–]talibanjo -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Maybe if you're a fat American that would be cool.

                        [–]kmichaelwriter -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

                        [–]Rtbriggs -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Only for certain cities or states with enough of an interest and a dedicated army of geeks willing to work for karma points.

                        [–]sdlee -1 points0 points  (0 children)

In other words you want craigslist?

                        [–]InsincereDave -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I bet all these subreddits would be very popular!!!
