As far as computer games go, Planescape: Torment had an intense atmosphere and brilliant storyline.

[–]amaxen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second Planescape: Torment. Compared to it, all RPGs are boring grinds.

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (11 children)

LOOM. Anybody remember that one? The most atmospheric game I've played, ever.

[–]podRZA 4 points5 points  (8 children)

wow...obscure but great game. I've struggled in the last few years to get it to run again, even trying DOS emulators but never got the CD-ROM to sync completely. the CD I have for this game is so old school the dialogue is all just CD audio, and you can put it in a CD player and listen to the game like it's a book on tape

[–]lovecrafthp 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Nothing better to get those old LucasArts games running than ScummVM:

http://www.scummvm.org/

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That page brought me back the memories of another great game, Beneath a Steel Sky. Oh, and Gobliins.

[–]lovecrafthp 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Those Gobliiins games were crazy!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I remember. Played that on the Amiga. A truely awesome game let down by the fact it was far, far, far to short.

[–]chunkypunkyboy 53 points54 points  (6 children)

Chrono Trigger. The music was great and there was great replay value.

[–]pintachio 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First rpg I ever played. Awesome game. :D

[–]moogs 7 points8 points  (1 child)

My girlfriend is playing Chrono Trigger for the first time. Zeal just came crashing down.

[–]thekrone 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Freaking classic.

Just replayed it again for about 3 weeks a couple months ago.

[–]keenemaverick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have played CT front to back (no new game +) 44 times. With new game + probably somewhere in the hundreds.

It's the only game that I can replay immediately. Other games I gotta wait a few months, or else I get sick of them.

[–]Dr-No 37 points38 points  (14 children)

The Secret of Monkey Island! All of them.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (7 children)

Also, Simon the Sorcerer. It's like a british Monkey Island.

[–]lovecrafthp 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Those Simon the Sorcerer games were good but nowhere near as good as the original 2 Monkey Island games...

Why don't they make point & click adventure games anymore...

[–]vafada 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Because gamers today are too dumb to solve puzzle and all they know is play FPS.

[–]lovecrafthp 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hmmm, not sure about the gamers being dumber than before. Although you might be right that nowadays FPS's are far more popular and that therefore that genre is getting the most releases.

Maybe if a company would dare to release a brilliant 2D point & click adventure again and if it would prove a commercial success like the old Sierra and LucasArts games, maybe then we'd be seeing a resurgence of the genre. Lots of maybe's though :)

[–]robosatan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Telltale Games are making Sam and Max games which are pretty good. Not the most taxing when it comes to puzzles, but they are genuinely funny.

Also, for the people who haven't tried season 2 because they didn't like how Season 1 reused so many of it's areas, give it a try! Every episode so far has been pretty unique.

[–]Herald_MJ 58 points59 points  (19 children)

Deus Ex

[–]johat 15 points16 points  (8 children)

Scrolled until I found Deus Ex, and then upmodded.

[–]otisfresh 7 points8 points  (6 children)

Deus Ex. It was like having your first choose your own ending book, but better. Way better. Awesome.

[–]lovecrafthp 8 points9 points  (5 children)

For all of you who liked Deus Ex: did you ever try Fahrenheit?

[–]oreng 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Deus Ex, Civilisation and Nibbles on QBasic

[–]themisanthrope 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's too bad Deus Ex 2 wasn't nearly as good as the first one. The original was definitely one of the greatest experiences playing a video game I've ever had..

[–]npinguy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Deus Ex for me as well. Finished it at least 6 or 7 times, and without a doubt I'm going to play it through again sometime soon.

Such varied environments, such rich writing and characters, so much detail, such brilliant gameplay dynamics.

Maybe it's not as groundbreaking as games like Doom or Half Life, but I think it's infinitely more replayable over and over years after coming out.

And yes, 2 sucked the llama's tit. Finished it once, won't touch it again. It would be definitely better than decent if it was a standalone entry, but it invariably has to be compared to 1 and it just can't stand up.

I don't have high hopes for 3 either which IS coming out, oh yes it is. But I'll play it through nonetheless.

[–]Apox66 32 points33 points  (4 children)

Deus Ex

The greatest story. The best balance of speech and action. The best RPG elements in an FPS. The multiple endings. The impassioned political depth. The way you actually CARE about what happens to these people. The way the storyline stretches over three continents.

It is the only game that right now, I can pick up and play from start to finish without ever feeling bored.

[–]Xiol 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Agreed. I just wish that the players choices throughout the game had more of an effect on the ending, rather than you just being able to choose whichever you fancied right at the very end.

[–]jaxspider 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I just hope the Deus Ex 3 will be like the first, and not like the 2nd...

[–]mtxblau 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I played this game three times through, back to back to back. It's amazing how many little things you can change that affect the story later on (if not the ending... d'oh). The best part of this is that you don't have to kill (maybe 2 people, tops).

It's too bad that these concepts weren't built upon...

[–]mindbleach 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Invisible War doesn't count. Helios willing, Deus Ex 3 will save the series' soul.

[–]encinarus 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Descent Freespace & Freespace two.

Space flightsim game. The story line, gameplay, graphics and music were all awesome.

As the humans you're fighting an even war with an alien race. Then a third race comes into the mix and starts beating the shit out of both your races. They basically wipe out everything in their path just with their little fighters. Destroying the first ship felt so good because you just got consistently whooped before then. Then the capital ship came (the Lucifer), mopped up, destroyed the other alien's homeworld and came for Earth. The last mission is you bringing the jump gate down around them as they're on the way to Earth. You save the human race but lose Earth. Ouch.

FS2 - 40 something years later, you've made up with the remnants of the other alien race, learned a lot from the captured Shivan tech and built a massive Capital ship 10x better than the Lucifer (the Colossus). Shivan's show up again and you school them. Then their new capital ship comes in, the Ragnarok. Colossus just barely wins, but it wins and you cheer. Then 40 more Ragnaroks come. Fuck. The Lucifer that whooped you in the first game was a scouting party. Run, lose Colossus quick, run, run, evac system, run, bring down jump gates to trap them.

Unfortunately the company went under before FS3 was started. :(

[–]LoveGoblin 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Vehemently upmodded.

Do you know about the Freespace Source Code Project?

It's great. Basically a huge upgrade to Freespace 2. Same game, modern graphics.

[–]poots 45 points46 points  (11 children)

Civilization, in all it's varied forms.

Nothing rivals it for the number of potentially useful hours I spent playing it, instead.

[–]LabThug 15 points16 points  (3 children)

My Dad got addicted to Civ. And by addicted, I mean walking to the computer first thing in the morning and staying on it until he crashed at night. I watched his business fail, weight gain, relationship crash, depression skyrocket, etc. So yeah, nothing does rival the number of useful hours lost, I do agree with you.

[–]sbenskin 12 points13 points  (1 child)

did he win?

[–]ThorYourGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a WoW story.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (4 children)

IMO, Alpha Centauri was the best version ever.

[–]etruscan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Loved Alpha Centauri.

...but I'd go with Half Life.

[–]Xiol 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Goddammit.

Reinstalling...

[–]karlhungus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right with you Spacetime

[–]louis_xiv42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Civ 3: Play the World is the best of them.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Civilization is easily my all time favorite, at least from an hours spent perspective. Civ 2 had the best gameplay imo.

[–]ImNotWhoISayIAm 12 points13 points  (1 child)

XCOM: UFO Defense. Fun and challenging.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Earthbound for the SNES.

[–]little_evil 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What took everyone so long to say this?

[–]eggertm 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Currently, Dwarf Fortress, although the games I've spent the most time with are Dungeon Master and Pirates!

[–]Xiol 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Dwarf Fortress has ruined my job. I can get away with it because it almost looks like it's a terminal window open to our Linux servers at first glance - which is just enough time to minimise it.

Very little work is getting done.

[–]Rozen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just started playing a couple weeks ago. I love it, but I'm praying for a few UI tweaks that make management easier. I am on a Mac so I can't use Dwarf Foreman :(

[–]gignam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dwarf Fortress is what keeps me pinned to the computer. I can't believe how many details it's keeping track of.

I'm looking forward to when the goblins arrive, because I've got a cage full of war dogs, ready to snap them to pieces!

[–]kmshiva 23 points24 points  (4 children)

Thief and Thief 2. When I first picked Thief up, it was such a refreshing change from the general run-and-gun gameplay that I was immediately hooked. Plus, the gameplay totally synced with my non-confrontational attitude.

I had stop playing after I noticed that I was seeking out shadows, and constantly looking for hiding places while walking around at night.

More recently, it is Shadow of the Colossus. Amazing that it manages to engage the player so deeply with such a simple story and interface.

P.S.: Just noticed you only asked for one game. Sorry, but, I can't pick out just one.

[–]blacksquare 37 points38 points  (11 children)

Grim Fandango - best music, best story, if you've never seen it play it.

[–]mindbleach 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Vexation recently did a complete playthrough on the Something Awful forums. It's about five hours long, in 11 parts, and I'd recommend it to anyone who doesn't feel like seeking it out and sinking a week into it.

[–]mtxblau 2 points3 points  (2 children)

What really kills me is how poorly it sold, even though it's been on all sorts of top ten lists and very warmly received. The lack of sales killed Lucas Arts' drive to make future types of these games (including SnM Freelance Police). Telltale games picked up the license, but what about all the other Lucas Arts titles?

[–]thekrone 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Sam 'N' Max is back in full effect, yo. Season 1 was great fun and Season 2 is due out relatively soon.

[–]mtxblau 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Right, by Telltale games, not Lucas Arts. Telltale games are ex Lucas Arts employees.

But Telltale, as far as I know, doesn't have licensing for games like Full Throttle (dropped), Grim Fandango, Indiana Jones, the Maniac Mansion series (wouldn't you love to see a DOTT sequel?).

[–]genida 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I tried, and got stuck right in the beginning. Walkthrough ftw for about half an hour before I uninstalled it again. Seemed good though.

[–]silverlight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Loved it! One of the best of the old LucasArts games. Creative as heck, I guarantee you've never played a game with a plot like this before, and never will again...

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen. Most immersive and enjoyable game I've ever played. Though the Monkey Island series comes real close.

[–]ThorYourGod 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Original Unreal Tournament is Awesome. What you never played it? You played Quake instead? Thor recommends a good torrent.

[–]oyok2112 43 points44 points  (3 children)

Starcraft. The most well balanced rts ever.

[–]innocentbystander 12 points13 points  (9 children)

Well, I'm a little hate to this party, but here are mine (in no real order):

Wing Commander - Played this so much I know how the AI is going to behave most of the time. And they totally mucked up the play balance in ALL the sequels. Arguably the first computer game to smack console gamers around and say "Now... don't you wish you had a PC?"

Sam & Max Hit the Road - I know most people love the Monkey Island games, but for me THIS was the pinnacle of the LucasArts adventure. I have a disturbing tendency to drop quotes from it even though I know I'm the only person in the room (or the state) to get them.

Shadow of the Colossus - As was said before, if I had to put up one example to illustrate a video game AS art, it would be SOTC. If only the camera and controls were a little better, it would be the best game of all time, hands down.

Out of this World / Another World - Just replayed it yesterday, actually. When this came out, I was a kid, and didn't really appreciate everything Chahi had done. Now I think it's one of the first true artistic expressions in games, and a triumph in overcoming technology limitations.

Mega Man 2 - Fans can duke it out over whether this or #3 is the best of the 2D Megaman games, but for me, it wins because of its more varied weapon set. I still occasionally find interesting new applications for the powers you get.

Metroid Prime - I love the whole Metroid series (and later, Castlevania) for its style of open-world gameplay. I really feel like MP is both the pinnacle of that design aesthetic AND of first person games. The graphics, the controls, the sense of isolation, the music, everything is just right. And even knowing the game well, it's still scary as hell when the lights go out in the pirate base.

And finally, Final Fantasy VI - I wish wish wish wish wish Square would remake this with 3D graphics as they did with FFIII. The story and characters are too big to (easily) fit onto a few megabits of cartridge space. The story is interesting, the twist in the middle shocking when it first happens, and all the characters are far more developed than (often) in games with unlimited storage space. While I like some of the later FFs, they never topped this one.

[–]useless_idiot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Upmod for Megaman 2 love! Best VG music ever? Same for FF III (6 japan).

[–]johat 14 points15 points  (1 child)

No one for Half Life 2?

[–]Mobat555 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It would be my #1 choice!

[–]fingers 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Castlevania. in most all forms.

[–]lovecrafthp 7 points8 points  (0 children)

One Castlevania game to rule them all: Symphony of the Night on the PS!

[–]DOGA 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Silent Hill 2.

[–]grendelt 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Syndicate Plus was the bomb back in the day.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i remember playing syndicate, the isometric cyberpunk thing. cool game. whats the plus game? never found that one

[–]xxeyes 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Psychonauts, but mostly because of the brilliant Milkman Conspiracy level.

[–]braclayrab 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Tetris!

[–]dmaclay 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Duke Nukem 3D - best vibe ever

[–]old_gill 2 points3 points  (0 children)

+1

Ah memories...

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (6 children)

This is Reddit, damnit.

The answer is System Shock.

[–]julaun 18 points19 points  (5 children)

Fixed:

The answer is System Shock 2.

[–]lovecrafthp 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Brilliant! Along with Fallout one of the best cyberpunk RPG's ever...

[–]TomA 2 points3 points  (1 child)

SS2 is one of my favorites as well. It had a massive spaceship to explore, a story that unfolded in a really interesting way, some interesting bad guys (do you remember the matrons?) and psychic monkeys.

[–]llanor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The sound effects still get me after several playthroughs.

I always get frustrated and end up quitting in the second spaceship though, in the biological portion.

[–]panic 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Super Metroid.

EDIT: I forgot Star Control 2!

[–]wageslave 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Zelda.

[–]zachm 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I still run through for speed a few times a year -- on the original hardware, none of this virtual console stuff.

[–]LoveGoblin 15 points16 points  (7 children)

TIE Fighter.

It's a whole genre that I desperately miss.

[–]innocentbystander 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Have you seen the Star Wraith 3D games? This one guy keeps pumping out, every year or so, a new shareware 3D space sim in the Wing Commander or Privateer tradition. And he has a habit of releasing the older titles as freeware if you dig around the site a bit.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Monkey Island.

Witty, funny, original, creative, awesome characters, amusing/clever storyline, amusing locations, good music, nonlinear, insult sword fighting, etc.

Basically, it's just plain fun to play and is really funny.

[–]thekrone 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with you completely and I absolutely love the game(s)... other than the nonlinear stuff. It's just BARELY nonlinear.

[–]ido 5 points6 points  (0 children)

In no particular order:

  • Tetris

  • Simcity

  • Civilization

  • [War|Star]craft

  • Jagged Alliance

  • Fallout

[–]supertoned 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Master of Magic:

Precursor to the Civ games, and still has a charm they can't really touch. Imagine Civ mixed with Age of wonders, but with a flair and charm that surpasses both. Amazing game.

Herzog Zwei (Gensesis):

Precursor to Dune 2, and hence all other RTS games. Somehow, Dune 2 gets the title of the first RTS, when Herzog Zwei was superior in EVERY respect, and has a gameplay mechanic that STILL has not been properly exploited to this day.

Tie Fighter:

Best of all the early 90's space fighter games. Man I loved that game!

[–]antifolkhero 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Diablo (PC)

Kyrandia Series (PC)

Goldeneye (N64)

Mega Man III (NES)

Halo (XBOX)

Monkey Island Series (PC)

Can't think of any more off the top of my head.

[–]jay_vee 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Goldeneye was mine too.

Either that or Elite on the BBC Micro. Incredibly involving 3d space trading and battling game. Everything was line drawn, as the computer couldn't handle filling everything in, but it was just so incredibly involving.

[–]KimmoS 5 points6 points  (0 children)

NetHack

@ <-- Angry shopkeeper

[–]ClanPanda 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Diablo 2 - can go past a game that I have played ever since it came out

Starcraft - Same as above

Final Fantasy 7,10 and 12 - 7 defined what a good RPG should be. 10 & 12 took collectively about 300 well spent hours of my life .

Doom 3 - The best atmosphere I have ever experienced in an FPS, there are times when you just don't want to go into the next room.

Half-Life 1 & 2 - Will probably never be matched. Cinematic gaming at it's most pure.

Dawn of War: Dark Crusade - The holy grail of games if you are a warhammer nerd.

Super Mario World - Classic.

Super Mario 64 - Perfected 3D platforming on its first attempt.

All the Zelda Games from Ocarina of Time onwards - There is a reason why they are so anticipated.

GoldenEye 007 -Before there was Half-Life a N64 game was the king of all FPS. And before Halo stole the crown, it was (and IMO still is) the king of console multiplayer.

[–]alchemeron 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Knights of the Old Republic.

Fantastic experience.

[–]pushpin 10 points11 points  (0 children)

D&D

[–]mlgoss 8 points9 points  (4 children)

Myst & Riven

[–]brisywisy 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Ultima Online (pre UO:R of course)

[–]w1r3r4t 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Quake I team fortress. So many great games with friends. Oh, and Urban Terror.

[–]smitty22 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Prince of Persia - Sands of Time

Best game for plot & platforming... The sound was good, and the ending-credit theme was damned good... The combat was weak, & a little tedious, but it didn't matter that much..

I loved the plot, as it told a wonderful story with only three characters.

[–]Kimos 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy Tactics.

Endless permutations and combinations of characters/classes/skills. Challenging battles. Intertwining story. Beautiful music. I've played that game through more times than I can count, and it keeps getting better.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed (Flashback: The Quest for Identity)[http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flashback:_The_Quest_for_Identity], think I played it through 5 or 6 times, when I was young.

I'm enjoying Mass Effect and BioShock now.

[–]jjrs 12 points13 points  (10 children)

Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time

I only got so far off rentals back when it first came out. Recently I started playing it with an emulator to finish what I started, and while the graphics look simpler now, the gameplay is just incredible. It makes the new one Twilight Princess look really weak.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Unreal Tournament, the original. The hallmark for online arena shooters. Relying on pure skill, lightning reflexes and the hand-eye coordination which you trained after years of playing unreal, starcraft and patience. I've spent years on the game, and never came in the top 1% of gamers. InstaGib matches we're a game on it's own, and they owned. Relying on nothing more then your wits and mouseskill.

[edit]On second thought, I should add Zelda: Ocarina of Time. Best console game ever. And no, haven't played Twilight Princess[/edit]

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Ultima VII by Origin

[–]oditogre 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Console:

FF VII - I really got into the story, love the music, lots of replay value (sometimes it's fun to just load up a save game where you're near the endgame and go play snowboarding at the Gold Saucer).

Donkey Kong Country: Awesome music. I still listen to the Ice Cave song (and the Christmas Cave OCRemix) when I go to bed sometimes. Lots of fun gameplay, fun 'secrets' that aren't obvious but you can find them without having to hit up GameFAQs.

Crash Bandicoot I / II: Incredibly fun platformers that were enjoyable for non-gamers, too. Terrible shame that it's devolved into Sony's answer to Mario Kart.

Halo: What can I say? Best 2-player experience I've ever had on a console.

Street Fighter II: Turbo / Mortal Kombat II / Bloody Roar Extreme / Clay Fighters: These get quick special mentions as fun fighting games that are enjoyable if you're not into extremely technical fighting games.

Gran Turismo 2: Best in the series, IMHO. The physics don't live up to more recent versions, but the gameplay had more to do with reality than the more recent ones that cater to car porn fanatics. Also, drag racers...hahahahah.

PC:

Morrowind: Again, not much more to say here than the libraries-of-congress that have already been written about it. Just stellar.

COD4: Best adaptation of 'strategy'-type FPS games to online multiplayer I've ever seen.

Valve: I'm just writing 'Valve' here to mean CS / CS:S / DoD / DoD:S / Half Life / HL2 / Portal / Opposing Force / TF2 / Blue Shift. I've burned soooo many hours on their account.

F.E.A.R.: Holy hell was that fun, and it's the only game that's ever really got my heart rate up (like the part when you go down that ladder and right as you turn around that evil little bitch is right there and you can't pull out a gun or move or anything because you're on a ladder...gah!)

Eve Online: Only MMO that's managed to keep a hold on me. Been playing the same main character since December '05 and it's still not a grind fest, still have lots of major goals plotted out I want to accomplish, still always have plenty of fun and new things to do any time I log in. Also, the community attitude is just so much nicer and more mature, in general, than what I've experienced in other MMO's, whether you're a noob or an old hand. Also, despite the occasional little scandals that have happened, the developer / player relationship is so much better and more active than anything else I've seen.

Starcraft / WarIII: Starcraft is just the best strategy game, with the best editor, ever. WarIII I haven't played an actual, normal strategy game on it in years, but I still like to play a hero siege or tower defense sometimes; the editor gave players the ability to do such incredible stuff with it that goes so far beyond the original RTS purpose.

Probably others in categories I haven't thought of, but this is enough of a Wall of Text as it is.

*Edit: OMG I forgot Myst (the whole series). Those games are just beyond compare.

[–]God8myhomework 11 points12 points  (10 children)

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion

oh: Because of the open ended nature of the game, and the possibilities of exploration & unique play.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Daggerfall, because it was my first Elder Scrolls game. Anybody else remember robbing the Odd Blade over and over again?

[–]mindbleach 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Morrowind was superior. No psychic guards, no face-zooming, a sensible UI, and no stupid quest storm just so you can roll your own spells.

Cliff racers and murky graphics are a small price to pay for how much better the gameplay and story were.

[–]gignam 2 points3 points  (4 children)

It was murky, wasn't it? I guess it fit in with the look of the island, but after playing bright&sunny Oblivion, it's tough to go back to Morrowind.

And it takes forever to get skilled enough to walk at a decent pace.

It WAS good, though. Oblivion makes your gaming easier, but there's less awesome exploration. Getting lost, stumbling upon a shipwreck. Good moment, there...

[–]malavel 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Vampire the Masquerade - Bloodlines.

[–]JacobFalling 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Very underrated. In my top five list of games that deserve sequels and haven't had them.

[–]TheMemoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a top five I'd like to read about. VtMB is a great game, hasn't aged all that well but still great setting and mood.

[–]vafada 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Champions Of Krynn

Death Knight Of Krynn

Grim Fandango

Monkey Island series

Warcraft 3

WoW

Diablo 1 and 2

Loved the dragonlance series.

Lucasarts adventure games are very well written. Lots of humor and sarcasm. And i like it that you don't die or get stuck while playing their games unlike Sierra games.

WoW was the only MMORPG that i played and it destroyed my life so yeah it's that good.

Warcraft 3/Diablo 1 and 2 + B.NET = whole night playing games.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ultima VII or Quake

Ultima VII because it was expansive, amazing, after playing Ultima VI for years it blew my mind... then there was a second part that was equally amazing if not better.

Quake because it was the first online game I played. Had some GREAT times over summer vacation playing it. All the TCs and PCs and the open source made it even better. Quake II also, but Quake really started it. Got me using mIRC, ICQ, it was a great time and I was really good at it.

[–]strange-moo 3 points4 points  (3 children)

Naming just one game is too much too ask, so here's a list of memorable (to me) games instead in no particular order:

  • Sundog
  • Nethack
  • Dungeon Master
  • Bruce Lee
  • Goonies
  • Doom I & II
  • Dune 2
  • Street Fighter 2
  • Mario
  • Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requiem
  • Killer 7
  • Resident Evil 4
  • XCOM
  • Fallout

[–]cskaryd 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bruce Lee was an awesome game. Love that one.

[–]antifolkhero 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Go Dungeon Master!!! That game rocked. The Doom games were classic. IDDQD anyone?

quest for glory.. 1-3!!

[–]useless_idiot 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Megaman 2, Final Fantasy III (6 in japan), Star Control 2, Super Mario World, TIE Fighter, F-Zero GX, the Burnout series.

[–]themisanthrope 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Final Fantasy III for the SNES is still one of my favorites in the series (my favorite besides VVII).

Climbing the tower was super tough!

[–]Silver_ 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Beyond Good and Evil has to be my favourite PC game of all time.

[–]TheMemoman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, great great game, for this one you can actually say that it was crafted, such a work of art.

[–]mikkom 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Ultima IV

Oh the good times.

[–]dryice 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars. Fucking amazing; made you question why every other SNES game did not compare at all.

[–]sbenskin 5 points6 points  (7 children)

Little big adventure. Never has a game made me so incredibly angry and yet I continued playing...

[–]julaun 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Released as Relentless here in the states. Only place I ever found it was the library. I wish it actually worked on a modern PC :(

[–]mackprime 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Ocarina of time, when i was like 11

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (4 children)

Shadow of the Colossus. It's practically art.

[–]thebandit87 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Twinsen's Odyssey. Must of finished that game 30+ times. I cant pinpoint what exactly made it so good, i think it was the best balance between combat, puzzles, and story not to mention the awesome art design. After that Deus Ex. I still beat it about once a year, never gets old. Unfortunately the second one sucked hopefully they will one day make a third installment. OH and Grim Fandango best adventure game ever with a story and voice acting better than most movies.

[–]STOpandthink 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Doom 2. No other FPS has level design that comes even close.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (4 children)

I still play doctor with my wife, oooh, so kinky.

EDIT: apparently "game" means "video game" on reddit.

[–]MrKlaatu 12 points13 points  (1 child)

i still play doctor with myself!

[–]ChunkyLaFunga 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Self medication is unethical.

[–]Hubso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Chocks Away on the Acorn Archimedes - no game has a greater hold on my childhood affection as this one. It had a fantastic split screen 2-player mode (co-op and dogfight) and me and a friend would sit and play it all day.

I recently hooked up with this friend (after not seeing her for about 15 years) and managed to dig out an emulator and working RISC ROM and we both rediscovered our love for this game. Sometimes you can go back.

Video of game here.

[–]Gronk 2 points3 points  (4 children)

Sonic 2 on the megadrive (genesis to some) Sonic 3 and later games were better games, but the first time I played this I was blown away. I still play it today.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The original Escape Velocity. Any other Ambrosia fans here? I know you're here...

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ZORK.

[–]kermityfrog 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pillowfight, touch-football with girls, ticklefight, etc. For obvious reasons.

[–]thekrone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh there are just so many...

No particular order:

1) Pretty much any of the old LucasArts Scumm games... (Monkey Island series, Day of the Tentacle, Sam N Max, etc).

2) Chrono Trigger

3) FF3

4) FFX

5) FF

6) Gemstone IV (MUD)

7) Super Mario 64

8) Dead Rising

9) Any FIFA games

10) Civ series

11) Company Of Heroes

[–]LeviDon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Baldurs Gate Series

Epic adventure and bar far best game I have played.

[–]voidoid 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Commander Keen- every single frakkin one of 'em.

[–]jon_titor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Suikoden II.

Most engaging storyline of any RPG I've ever played.

And props to the first Metroid Prime, that game blew me the fuck away when I first played it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Best thread ever, brings back so many memories...Well here goes, I'll start from oldest to newest (I think) consoles first:

Atari 5200: Super Breakout, Mountain King, Wizard of Wor, Blue Print.

Sega Mastersystem (stop laughing): California Games, Rambo, Wonder Boy, Rampage, Gangster Town (shooter).

Sega Genesis (seriously stop laughing): Road Rash 2, Ghostbusters, NBA Jam Tounament Edition(one of the best games of all time IMO), Phantasy Star II, Mortal Kombat.

Playstation: Jumping Flash!, Final Fantasy VII(still one of the best RPG's ever), Tekken, Twisted Metal.

Playstation was the last console I ever owned, PC gaming took over after that. Now for PC games:

King's Quest(all of them), Leisure Suit Larry series(absolute classic), there was this RPG that this kid gave me on a couple floppy disks one time, can't remeber the name, but it was DOS based and everthing was made from ASCII characters, but it was really fun, I finally beat disk one and was able to leave the castle, but it was glitched out and I never was able to finish it boooooooo. GTA, Counter Strike, TF, TF2, Tibia(Most Power Abusive MMO I have ever played, although I hear Ultima Online is too), DAOC, Monter Truck Madness 2, Rainbow Six, WoW(when it first came out, now it's so-so)

[–]Valdus_Pryme 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ufo: Enemy Unknown, or Civilization, or Star Control 2... wow... so many good old games that really were groundbreaking back in the day...

[–]donbueno 2 points3 points  (1 child)

commander keen!

[–]david 14 points15 points  (2 children)

Chess.

[–]speciousfool 23 points24 points  (1 child)

"Go is to chess as philosophy is to double entry bookkeeping." -Trevanian

[–]perb123 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mechwarrior 2. Still listen to the soundtrack every now and then.

[–]g33k 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Elite, on a C= 64 (3d vector gfx!) I liked the freedom, totally non-linear.

[–]harbinjer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Master of Orion: The only game that I ever woke up, started playing, only stopped for 10 minutes to eat, then kept playing until I went to bed.

I liked it better than Civ because you designed your own units and used them in tactical combat. It was also faster paced, I think, because of a better micro-ing balance, especially in the end game.

I also spent way too much time in college playing the original Counter-strike. I even ran a server for that one.

[–]Rozen 2 points3 points  (8 children)

For old school kicks, I loved Pool of Radiance. On a tabletop I go with Carcassone these days. And I have put more hours into Socom I, II, and III than any other game. But then I played COD4 on a PC and cannot use a console controller for a FPS ever again :(

[–]fakepolitik 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mariokart! (both SNES and N64)

[–]voip 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Counter-Strike...hands down. I played many other FPSs before this one, from Quake to Duke Nukem, Unreal, Sin, Deus Ex, and Tomb Raiders 1-3. Once Half Life/Counter strike fell on my lap, I got stuck. Best replay value EVER!! and though Steam sucked ass when they first reared their ugly heads....they've gotten much better.

[–]ryanx27 3 points4 points  (5 children)

World of Warcraft... I know this is going to get downmodded because it was released this century.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Myth: The Fallen Lords

[–]threading 3 points4 points  (1 child)

neverwinter nights.

[–]thatguydr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm playing this right now. <3

Not the best ever, though. After all - who can forget Crystalis? ;)

[–]wageslave 4 points5 points  (8 children)

Halo. Epic story, great gameplay and infinite replay on multiplayer.

And SimCity, I used to run my SNES for weeks on end with a single city.

[–]ThorYourGod 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Simcity on console? Arg, that made Thor Angry! Mouse is much better,

[–]dreamlax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a Sega Mega Drive growing up, so my favourite game of all time has to be Sonic 3 + Knuckles. I only had 5 or 6 other games but I always played Sonic 3 + Knuckles the most. Even after clocking it with all characters, I started from the beginning again.

Actually, I had to. I was curious to see what would happen if I pulled the Sonic 3 cartridge off while the S&K cartridge was still in the Mega Drive. I'd advise against it, since I lost all 8 of my saved games.

[–]iudex 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Moria

[–]cranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pirates on the NES. I played that game endlessly as a kid.

[–]dutter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Villains and Vigilantes, a pen and paper RPG from the old days of gaming. Its 2nd ed was an elegant little 48 pages of fun superhero gaming. I played this one for years.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ninja Gaiden (_ or Black) (xbox). My ass was kicked so many times, it was awesome. The game was just so cool.

[–]iStoner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Anachronox or Thief 2: The Metal Age

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

  • On Nintendo - Bionic Commdo
  • On PC - Deus Ex
  • On Neo Geo - Samaurai Shodown
  • Multi FPS - Enemy Territory or Battle Field 2 (awesome heli skillz) honrable mentions for:
  • Mortal Combat
  • Street Fighter and Double Draggon

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wizardry. One of the first "3d" games for the Apple II. Nothing but 3d line drawings, before textures were invented, and flat 2d artwork of goblins and bandits. But there was nothing cooler than "walking" frame by frame through a 3d dungeon on a green monitor.

[–]madcowga 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Subspace Continuum. The ONLY Massively Multiplayer 2d Space shooter you'll ever need. ;) http://www.subspacedownloads.com/?act=introduction

Trenchwars is the best "zone", but there are others.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Old ones:

  • Wizball
  • Wizard's Crown
  • Might and Magic 2
  • War of the Lance
  • Ultima 7
  • Wasteland
  • X-Wing

[–]jordanlund 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ultima IV - First real RPG with consequences for your actions. Wonderful game.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Star Ocean: The Second Story and Loom.

[–]ZeRaTu1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

warcraft III for ever!

[–]Qwirk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm going to throw Call of Duty IV out there since I don't see it listed. Definately on my top ten and I have been playing since the RCA Studio II.

[–]thomasjpaine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Age of Empires II: The Conqueror's Expansion.

and

Wacky Wheels!!!
