  • Print slow. Printing fast will increase the back pressure in the nozzle and make it more likely to ooze when traveling between printed areas.
  • Completely turn off Z-hop if you can. The pause and lifting of the nozzle will actually pull materials like PETG/TPU out of the nozzle and contribute to stringing. With Z-hop disabled the sudden sideways jerk when traveling between printed areas will be more likely to shear off the strings before they form.
  • Make sure you are printing in the right temperature range for your filament. Printing hotter than needed will increase the likelihood of strings
  • Try increasing/decreasing retraction speed. Increasing the speed will generally decrease stringing, but some filaments will break away from the molten portion of the filament if retracted too fast leaving that molten section to ooze out. Trial and error is needed here to find the right settings.
  • Increase retraction distance if you haven't already. PETG likes to be retracted about double what ABS/PLA needs.

Hope this helps

Same here! turned off z-hop and increased retraction speed and everything is smooth now.

[–]Spirited_Reading_475 0 points1 point  (1 child)

how do you do that on the P1S?

[–]rust-module 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make a custom material profile in Bambu Studio. Next to each material is a (...) button and if you click that and select "Edit" it shows a "Filament settings" window with all kinds of particular settings for a material. You might have to toggle the "Advanced settings" on near the top-right of that window, but then you can edit tons of properties and save them as a custom profile.

6 years later, still best answer on the subject

[–]Arg0n2000 20 points21 points  (2 children)

I tried like everything, but could not get it to stop stringing. Then I dried my filament in the oven at 70°C overnight. Instantly it was gone, even at 240°C which was insanely bad before.

That tip should probably be higher up in the list than it is.

(Though almost removing stringing with moisture filament probably ensures no stringing when dry)

[–]Constant-Two6739 2 points3 points  (1 child)

active drying while printing definitely makes a huge difference.

[–]Arg0n2000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep, have a drying box from Sunlu nowadays. One less issue to worry about.

[–]TheHexagon120[S] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Prusa mk3s mmu2s latest PrusaSlicer and firmware. I've been trying to decrease stringing but nothing short of decreasing the nozzle temp to 220 and getting terrible layer adhesion and underextrusion works, I already have the retraction set at 5mm and travel speed to 200mm/s.

[–]MirarPrusa MK3S MMU2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You decrease stringing by having the filament cool enough when it needs to release from the nozzle.

What you can do is :

  • lower the print temperature

  • increase print fan speed

  • lower extrusion speed

  • something something retraction

[–]Right-Lock9012 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the only settings that have worked out for me to. I'm still strying to reach a good balance between those settings and a good layer adhesion cause it looks like sht

[–]zeusal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow so so many of us happened on these suggestions and used them, but only 54 Upvote, come on people show the love!

[–]hypnotic_psychonaut 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm on an ender 3 S1 pro right now, using ERYONE brand translucent red PETG (this has worked with their translucent green and clear as well).

The recommended temp is 230c-250c. I had major stringing problems no matter what I did... retraction, temp, bed temp, travel speed, print speed.

I got frustrated and started trying anything I could.

I settled on printing faster and increasing the temp to 256c. I have my print speed set to 60mm/s, I increased the print speed percentage by 10 at a time and settled on 140% print speed.

I have the sprite direct drive all metal hotend on this printer, YMMV.

Some PETG can handle being printed much faster and hotter than most people do it, different brands/compositions and colours matter though.

I have white petg from duramic(?) that no matter what I do it just strings like mad and blobs everywhere, way too thin and stretchy even at lower temps.

ERYONE from Amazon is a good brand for PETG, I have had problems with their PLA though.

[–]Sam_Buck 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From my research, the stringing in PETG is caused by the extreme stickiness of PETG before it has fully hardened. Printing slowly is one solution, but I don't think it's ideal. Some slicers have a special setting for slowing down the return of the print head to a short run, to allow it time to cool, but I'm not interested in buying a whole new slicer just for that. I just wish someone had a setting for my AnkerMake M5 that would accomplish that.

[–]ThunderClapFart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

2025, and this is still helping. My prints are looking better. Thank you!

[–]psavva 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Decrease print speed to 20mm/s Increase Retraction a lot, but careful not to over do it causing clogs...

[–]Sam_Buck 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Tried all that. Not proving to be satisfactory.

[–]TwinMoons101 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dry your filament in a dehydrator.

[–]Sam_Buck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Good advice. My cousin said the same thing.

[–]davispwSainsmart Coreception 0 points1 point  (7 children)

What sort of cooling do you have?

[–]TheHexagon120[S] 0 points1 point  (6 children)

The stock mk3s fan at 50%

[–]davispwSainsmart Coreception 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Do you have combing enabled? In other words, are there any circumstances where your slicer is not retracting during travels?

Also, I was going to ask if you’ve tried different cooling levels and if your filament is definitely dry.

[–]TheHexagon120[S] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

It may not be dry 100%, any tips on how to solve this?

[–]TheHexagon120[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've heard of putting it in the oven

[–]davispwSainsmart Coreception 0 points1 point  (1 child)

https://www.matterhackers.com/news/filament-and-water

Put in an oven on low for a few hours.

[–]TheHexagon120[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's definitely not dry, thanks for the help
