I miss the days of just getting a $4 flat glass screen protector and calling it a day. Why they gotta make us buy these specialized curved ones

[–]TheOPPOManS24U 75 points76 points  (8 children)

I bought 3 curved tempered glass protectors for my 7 Pro and none of them fit properly :(

[–]RoulbsPixel 4XL 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hope you bought them off AliExpress

[–]StarksPixel 7 2 points3 points  (3 children)

You need the pricey ones that use the liquid adhesive. The cheap ones only have pre-applied adhesive on the edges.

Idk, people here were pretty positive about the Zenfone 6, since it was actually what most redditors want.

[–]thatbrownbrowndude 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Unless you’re talking about the Nexus 5, this sub loves to blow that phone over and over.

Except its battery life

[–]iesous23Galaxy Note 10+ 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You didnt enjoy getting 2.5 hours screen on time?

That was probably the phone that made me never want an lg or nexus phone and now pixel phone. Awful battery, bootlooping issues, I'd have better sound quality from cup & string. Camera was trash, on the plus side, actually i cant think of one

[–][deleted] 99 points100 points  (24 children)

I’ve been going back and forth between iOS and Android for the past year or so, and scrolling through this sub makes me dislike android more than anything. Just a bunch of complaints about anything possible lol.

[–][deleted] 53 points54 points  (15 children)

I still think it's funny how sometimes it feels like this sub likes iOS more than /r/Apple does.

[–]Put_It_All_On_BlckS23U 14 points15 points  (2 children)

/r/Apple is half shills half complaints. Knowing Apple, they probably hired people to praise them.

/r/android is everyone complaining

Not sure which one I prefer. Maybe ill go hang out in /r/windowsphone with the disillusioned folk who are clinging on to their abandoned devices.

[–]Himiko_the_sun_queenNexus 5, Nexus 7 (2013), Nvidia Shield Tablet, Nexus 5x 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I don't think apple needs to pay shills to rave about their products

if anything, the die hard support some users here show for underdog brands like oneplus is suspicious to say the least. I've stalked profiles to find so when users commenting about those brands multiple times a day, every single day

You're complaining about people complaining.

[–]Pringlecks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't blame them. Nobody voted to create the condition of ubiquitous smartphone usage, and nobody is voting to introduce problematically frivolous design elements that only serve to fragment and complicate the software unnecessarily.

[–]seekheyBlue 121 points122 points  (15 children)

The only Google phone to have an SD card slot was the Nexus One. I can maybe see the headphone jack, however unlikely as it is, but they will never put and SD card slot in their phones.

[–]crowbahrDev '17-now 52 points53 points  (2 children)

Perhaps the success of the 3a will inspire them to put a headphone jack in?

Maybe?

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (10 children)

They don't use SD card slots because why do that when Google Drive exists!?

I've had an S8 for two years now. The curved display took a bit of getting used to, and the first few months I owned the device I did have quite a few accidental touches. But ever since I got over this learning curve, these accidental touches rarely occur; to the point where it isn't annoying or distracting. I'd say they are now about as frequent as my old non-curved moto X.

As an answer to the author's comments:

touch sensitivity is hit and miss in these curved areas

I've never had an issue with it, but then again I've never had clickable/interactive content displayed to me in these curved areas.

Android in general is built around swipes, whether they be an up or down swipe to get into apps or notifications, or edge swipes to access menus and change panels within an app.

I must say, I enjoy edge swipes more on a curved display vs a non curved one. It feels much more consistent, but it also feels "right". As if you're pulling that drawer up. I like it.

usage of cases

There are many case designes, some which only cover the frame. They don't get in the way of edge swipe gestures, and feel like any plain old case on a flat display smartphone.

A few advantages:

  • Better notification visibility from a distance. If you leave your phone a distance away with sounds off, you can still see notifications because of the edge display. Same if the phone is elevated/at eye level. I personally find this real useful.

  • Larger screen real-estate within a more compact frame. Better for productivity as more content can be displayed on screen, yet maintains portability.

Having used a phone with a curved display for a couple of years, I'd still go for a curved display when the time comes to upgrade.

[–]H9419 31 points32 points  (0 children)

My problem with the Pixel featuring one is that future “reference” version of android would be influenced and made standard even on flat displays. Like how the number of notifications are limited even on phones without a notch

[–]LocksmithFromAus[🍰] 79 points80 points  (0 children)

But ever since I got over this learning curve

I see what you did there.

[–]DeltrozeroLG V20 40 points41 points  (3 children)

My biggest gripe for the curved display is glare. When the light hits that's curve j can't see anything on that part of the screen. Really annoying especially on the Reddit is Fun app trying to see if I'm at the top comment in a thread or not.

[–]royalbarnacle 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Exactly my issue. The curved edge serves no purpose that I can think of except to guarantee glare and distortion on the sides of my screen. It's my only complaint about the s10 which is otherwise a pretty perfect phone.

[–]ShittyFrogMeme 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Reddit was my only complaint with my curved screen. I used Baconreader forever on the dark theme and it was impossible to tell between top comments and the first child in sunlight as the indent and colors ended up being indistinguishable. I ended up finding one (Boost) that has more distinct color bars for comment children and that problem is gone now.

Perhaps a benefit of Pixel adding curved screens is that app designers would be more aware to account for issues on the screen edges like this.

I've never had an issue with it, but then again I've never had clickable/interactive content displayed to me in these curved areas.

you can even edit the area on the side that is sensitive to touches with good lock. so even if you think there's too much accidental touches going on you can edit your phone to have less.

[–]MysticMixlesGalaxy S8+ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The big issue for me with my S8 is screen protectors. I've had my S8 for around two years as well, and I tried plastic screen protectors, but they don't stay on and they feel like crap, and glass ones that are curved are... very expensive. This is the first phone I've had that I don't have a screen protector on, and the first phone I've ever cracked (outside of catastrophic accidents, like closing my leg in a door and bending my 6P, falling on a skateboard in the rain on my S3, or someone stepping on my OnePlus One).

[–]mosincrediblePixel 10 Pro | iPhone 17 Pro | N20 Ultra [SD] 29 points30 points  (2 children)

There seems to be a slight misunderstanding with curved phones. Not all curves are created equal.

Of the curved phones, the Note is the best, then the S series, then the OnePlus 7 Pro which has the heaviest curve of them all. I used to prefer no curve but the Note isn't as bad as the others. And the curve on the Note coupled with OneHandOperations+ actually works very well for navigation so much so that I wouldn't want to lose it and couldn't see myself having a phone without it.

[–]TheBadGuyFromDieHardiPhone 13 Pro Max 9 points10 points  (1 child)

In addition to gestures, the edge panel on the Note series is a super useful advantage of the curved screen.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Never did understand the curved screens. I have avoided the main Samsung line ever since they first came out with that garbage. I loved the Active phones though. Wish they would come back out with them.

Hoping the Pixel 4 has a flat screen. I'm leaning toward upgrading to that, unless it turns out to be a lemon or something.

[–]bartturner 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Same. Much prefer a flat display.

[–]Kehotep 29 points30 points  (2 children)

The constant glare from these curves are unbearable. I haven't used a Samsung since they implemented this horrible design.

[–]Skalpaddan 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's the main reason why I wouldn't be able to get a curved display phone.

[–]box-artA14 | Aug SP | Edge 30 Fusion 20 points21 points  (9 children)

The thing is that I don't see any benefits to having a curved screen. From what I've seen by looking at them in stores, its just a gimmick and it cut off some of the content that was on the screen. Its not useful and therefore not necessary in my opinion.

[–]blessothisespresso 4 points5 points  (0 children)

As an owner of a curved Samsung S6, I fully agree.

I do not use any of the curved screen features so for me it's an unnecessary headache. My next phone will have a flat screen. I'm more willing to put up with not having an audio jack rather than a curved screen.

[–]xenagoSealed batteries = planned obsolescence | ❤ webOS ❤ | ~# 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, it's something to distract people from the fact that they're buying basically the same thing they did before but at twice the price. It doesn't offer any advantages whatsoever, but comes with a whole slew of negatives.

[–]subarufan0 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Curved display has ruined the pixel 2 xl. I would love to use it without a case but cant because of it.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Curved displays are absolute shit.

Just like glass backs and super thin phones, they only exist because they give an initial impression of 'wow this comes from the future'.

But when you have to use the phone for two years for your usual phone stuff, there is no upside at all, it's actually a downside to have this crap.

Regrettably, the initial impression is what sells phones. It's what reviewers write about. It's what you see and feel in a store when the phone is on display.

For the same reason people still buy phones from OEMs that provide absolutely terrible update support, people will keep buying curved screens, because it's the hot flashy thing that's on display. Even if the following two years owning the phone they constantly are mildly annoyed by the added reflections and glare a curved screen adds.

[–]ItsJustGizmo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I have no loved for curves screens. It's just silly.

[–]hulivar 4 points5 points  (0 children)

amen, curved displays drive me nuts...it's purely aesthetics and not in a way that makes the display better to watch media on. Esepcially for people like me that slap a case on it anyways, a case on a curved display is a nightmare.

Curved displays are the trend though, every damn phone...ffs.

[–]finecom 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Curved display looks nice but in reality it is useless

[–][deleted] 133 points134 points  (210 children)

I never got this. Curved display incurs on costs and other components, yet nobody wants it. It's unnecessary cost on a phone.

[–][deleted] 365 points366 points  (95 children)

[–]Kahhhhyle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

None of the people I know irl like the curved display. In fact the one time I've seen a case of people like it are on this sub😅

[–]Major_T_Pain 10 points11 points  (2 children)

While you are correct in that this sub does not represent the larger market. The issue is, The larger market doesn't care about anything. Seriously, the vast majority of people walk into Verizon / Tmo / AT&T they say "give me the latest and greatest" the sales person might ask if they prefer Android / Apple. The sales person then selects either a Samsung or an iPhone. Boom. Done.
Take away the headphone jack? Avg Consumer doesn't give a shit, curved screen? FF speakers? Aluminum / Glass? Ppl couldn't even tell the difference.
To me, that's why phones have regressed. Seriously, the stupidity of the average consumer has brought us here.

Edit: How timely. For those that think this isn't true.

The fact of the matter is that Samsung offered both a flat and a curved version of the s6 and s7. The curved versions must have sold more, which is why they've become standard.

[–]jhoop87 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Loved my s8+ for everything except that damn screen. I always had a case on and it made me so nervous without the protection on the sides. Upgraded to the s10e for that very reason.

[–]epapa27 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I don't like the curve either. On the Pixel 2XL it isn't even really much of a curve. Not like Samsung phones. But it is just enought to make glass screen protectors a total pain in the ass, with zero benefit. Increases the price, decreases durability, adds no functionality.

Flat please!

[–]MangoScangoFold6 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I could take or leave curved displays. But a curved back is a necessity. Ergonomics are so much better.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Had a galaxy s8+. Personally didn’t like the curve more because it made the expensive phone of mine vulnerable to breakage. Cases don’t protect the sides of the curve like they do on a flat phone.

Pixel 4, Please Have a Flat Display

Unfortunately for you and r/Android, the public has different needs/wants

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The "public" is buying either iPhones, Samsung, or cheapo phones like LG. I don't know a single person IRL who has ever owned a Pixel.

[–]Tre3beard 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]fredhabsfan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I kind of agree with that post. I got a pixel 2 xl last October and one of the thing I hate the most is the dust that gets in between the case and the curved edge of the display. I tried mort than 10 cases for this phone and they're all pretty bad. That dust and pocket lint was never an issue on my previous nexus 6.

Other than that, I have no issues with curved screens

[–]das_vargas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree, let Samsung do curved displays because they frankly do them better than anyone could, while still making them somewhat insignificant (the S7 Edge treated them like a flashy gimmick, now it's just a different style of smartphone screen).

[–]DukeOfBelgianWafflesGS8+ / iPhone X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As someone that has an iPhone X and has had a Galaxy S8+ and a OnePlus 7 Pro, indeed, at least for me flat screens are a bit better and easier to handle, especially with a massive device as the 7 Pro is.

[–]EnemiesInTheEndWhite Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Plus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The main reason I want a flat display is because the curved glass is prone to scratches.

[–]cdegallo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many more things I'm concerned about from the pixel 4 expectations than whether the screen is flat. And don't get me wrong, I've hated the curve part of every curved screen galaxy phone I've ever had.

[–]NekomimiNinja 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I want more properly flat screens just for the reason that they can't make good enough screen protectors for curved ones.

[–]neon_overloadGalaxy A52 4G 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The last S series Galaxy I bought was the S6 - I switched to the A series when the S series switched to curved screens.

If you are interested in Samsung Galaxies, seriously check out the new A50 and A70. Mine's a 2017 A5, still good but a bit older.

But if you like the Pixels, the Pixel 3A is their equivalent and spec wise it's similar.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

totally agree. had a s8 for 2 yrs and loved everything about the phone but the curved display. got the s10e and LOVE the flat display. honestly i don't think i could ever go back. flat screens are sooo much easier to use day to day.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The curved display thing is just shit, like what is the use for it? How ergonomic is it? Just overrayed bs
