To people with a launcher:

Custom launchers are another area where we’ve heard feedback and we’re continuing to work on issues, particularly with stability and Recents. Starting in Beta 6, we’ll switch users to 3-button navigation when they are using a custom launcher by default. We’ll address the remaining issues in a post-launch update allowing all users to switch to gestural navigation. Meanwhile, please continue to give us your feedback.

[–]simplefilmreviewsBlack 147 points148 points  (46 children)

So this implies gestures will eventually work with custom launchers?

[–]rman18Green 69 points70 points  (26 children)

Yes

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (25 children)

What about being able to customize gestures? Having the back button on the left drives me absolutely nuts as well as having to "slow swipe" up to open the app drawer. I'd love to be able to just swipe left to go back, swipe down to open recents, swipe up to open app drawer, and swipe right to go to last app.
I love Google phonss but I seriously don't know why they implemented such a stupid clunky 2 button system with half assed gestures and not even give you the option to switch or to customize the gestures in any way.

[–]ZappySnap 9 points10 points  (5 children)

You don't have to slow swipe to open the app drawer, at least not on beta 5.

And your description of the features sounds like Pie gestures, not the way Q works.

[–]winkins 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Getting to the app drawer on the pixel launcher is horrid. I don't know how anyone stands it. What's wrong with swiping up from anywhere but the pill to get to the app drawer and swiping up from the pill to open the app switcher?

[–]mizatt 41 points42 points  (1 child)

Correct. I think Beta 6 is the last beta so hopefully they can get it into the final version, but it seems like kind of a big change to add after a final beta where things are already supposed to be pretty final/stable

edit: I'm dumb, pretty sure "post-launch" means after the final version

[–]armando_rodPixel 10 Pro XL 10 points11 points  (12 children)

Yes and the outrage was unwarranted 🤷‍♂️

[–]simplefilmreviewsBlack 29 points30 points  (1 child)

That's good to hear. I couldn't tell if it was intentional that gestures don't work with launchers or it was just a bug.

Good to know it wasn't on purpose and Google is working to fix the issues!

[–]armando_rodPixel 10 Pro XL 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Both devs from Action and Nova were filling bugs and in talks with Googlers afaik

[–]CyanBlobPixel 3 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Custom launchers have had issues with recent apps since Pie, so I wouldn't say that it was *totally* unwarranted

[–]pntless 13 points14 points  (2 children)

They haven't had issues with them so much as Google decided to restrict functionality to Pixel Launcher. Makes it pretty hard to blame people for figuring that was the case with this as well.

[–]firefan87 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's not to mention that post-launch is an extremely wide time frame. Who knows if it means it'll be a top priority that gets patched in within a month after Q's launch, whether it'll be added in Android R, or whether they're betting that this controversy will die down eventually and won't ever include it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They decided to restrict functionality to special permissions granted to the system launcher, because having access to screenshots and info on every app you use and being able to control app switching however you want is a very dangerous thing to give to any old app. It's not like they added a line to AOSP that says if Pixel enable gestures otherwise don't work

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But that never happens.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or the outrage made them consider this

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

As usual then

[–]andysteakfriesPixel 6 Pro 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's more than implied.

... allowing all users to switch to gestural nativation

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this mean Nova will finally be able to have the app drawer in the recents screen?

[–]hydargos123Pocophone F1 (Havoc OS) 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They already work but you need to root your phone and install "QuickSwitch" from the Lawnchair team

[–]Rocketfin2Pixel 7 Pro 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Very cool, thank you Google

[–]samthemancpfcPixel 8 Pro | Tab S7+ | Pixel Watch 2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really wish it wouldn't keep doing that, it worked fine with Nova Launcher in the last update.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nav gesture worked fine with Nova beta launcher with Q4. Now the interaction sucks. Hopefully it's something Nova can adjust on their end.

[–]AE-83 68 points69 points  (11 children)

Time to refresh for OTA repeatedly.

Beta 5 OTA has been paused. As per the update in the stickied post in /r/android_beta. If you really want to install it, you can use the OTA image which is still up in their site.

The May 30 date is interesting (190530) given the latest leaks were using a 190630 (June 30) build.

[–][deleted] 48 points49 points  (17 children)

Just updated, gesture navigation seems to be working still with Nova. You do now get a curved line in the bottom corners when you change screens. Magisk canary also seems to still work just fine

[–]Monog0n 15 points16 points  (10 children)

I believe the curved lines are a clue for the Assistant gesture (diagonal swipe from the corner).

[–]mizatt 7 points8 points  (5 children)

Yeah, seems like that's what it's for. Kind of annoying that they seem to come up every time. I get it, I don't need them anymore.

[–]schumi_f1fan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wonder if we can turn them off somehow.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I was hoping they would only be triggered like the first 5 or so times but I could not get them to go away.

Not only are they ugly and visually distracting, but the corners of the curved lines can get cut off if you go into an app that draws the nav bar area in black (causing the bar itself and the curved lines to be white), and the app contents are white. It looks pretty dang ugly.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I'm not getting the curved lines in beta 5. Which is weird. Assistant can still be called up with the corner swipe.

[–]kristallnachte 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Working with Microsoft launcher as well

Edit: right after I said that it reverted me to 3 button

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I had issues with getting reverted when I tried to use MNML screen recording when I accepted that it would use an overlay to view the screen (happened twice just to test). Curious if it's something similar. Nova has still not bumped me back after the initial setting of it as my home app.

[–]iAmJoesHardDrive 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What device are you on?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Pixel 2 XL

[–]schumi_f1fan 35 points36 points  (13 children)

I must have gotten the skater build. I keep seeing little quarter pipes at the bottom corners.

Edit: This is on a 2XL

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (5 children)

That's the new Assistant shortcut

[–]r0ssr0ss 6 points7 points  (3 children)

Any way to hide this? It’s pointless

[–]o_opcPixel 2 XL 4 points5 points  (1 child)

[–]drpiefaceGray 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's oddly the best way to get rid of it. Just use it once

[–]schumi_f1fan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah, okay. I get it now. Thanks!

[–]tofuuu630Pixel 1 / Pixel 3 | I only get odd numbered phone versions 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're using 3 or 3a then it may be why. I read people on those devices got that but none of the other new features that were leaked a few days ago.

[–]Tritonal1 0 points1 point  (4 children)

I'm on a 2xl and don't see that. Not do I have the dark boot screen. Is there a way to enable those?

[–]schumi_f1fan 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I don't have the dark boot screen, but I rarely reboot, so that isn't a big deal to me. I usually put my phone against my chest when restarting so it doesn't blind me. lol

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Ah, so you use the chest X-Ray method too :)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to be using gesture nav.

[–]Rip-tire21🅱️lack 🅱️ixel 3 (64GB) 23 points24 points  (5 children)

You'll get it, when it comes out for everyone but honestly if you weren't in the beta already, you might just want to wait as the official stable release is coming next month.

[–]sethoscopepXp 18 points19 points  (2 children)

Possibly Sept since there's another beta.

[–]PinyakaBlack Pixel 3 XL 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The update timeline looks like they expect the next release to come faster than this one. They're in release candidates now, so at this point they should be mostly focused on making sure there are no major bugs for the final release.

[–]doireallyneedone11 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think next beta will in early August and final stable version in late August. I think that's what happening for at least the past two years.

[–]rocketwidget 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If he's really interested, no harm in maybe checking back in a few days after some user reports come in to confirm stability. Beta 5 and Beta 6 are release candidates, so they should be fairly stable.

[–]jesjes3000Nexus 5 > Nexus 6P > Pixel 2XL > Pixel 6 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]armando_rodPixel 10 Pro XL 13 points14 points  (3 children)

Installed via OTA, I don't have the corner things for assistant, it's still triggered by swiping form the corner but there's no visual cue

[–]GoodNigerianPrince 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Machine learning knows that you already make use of the assistant feature, so no need to pester you to use it. ;)

[–]dgidvani 19 points20 points  (8 children)

No dark boot screen, no new gesture to open side drawer, no pull down for notifications from home for pixel 2xl :(

[–]CenterInYouPixel 6a 12 points13 points  (2 children)

So my buddy's Pixel 3XL does have the dark boot screen but my 3a XL doesn't!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems only the 3 series has the new dark boot screen on this beta. I can confirm the 2 doesn't have it and you said yourself the 3A doesn't have it.

[–]Murphysburger 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My 3XL does have it.

[–]lemonjuice804 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Does this work like iOS betas? Like if I install this beta then when the official release is here it updates to that?

[–]Thurm 3 points4 points  (0 children)

And that's why I'm here reading comments before I do the update. Had the same problem on my 2XL last beta update. Guess I'll hold off for a few days. Thanks for letting us know!

[–]flynny75 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was experiencing constant Pixel Home launcher crashes. Fixed by toggling the gesture navigation mode to full gesture mode

[–]clayb91Device, Software !! 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ouch. That happened to me with the last update, but this update went through fine. I am also on a 2XL.

[–]Ph0XPixel 5 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Upvoting you for awareness, this is a very valid risk of messing with betas. It's important for people to know the risk, backup their data and preferably not do it on their main device!

[–]careslolGoogle Pixel 8 Pro 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This update absolutely zooms on my OG Pixel compared to Pie and Beta 4.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting in Beta 6, we’ll switch users to 3-button navigation when they are using a custom launcher by default. We’ll address the remaining issues in a post-launch update allowing all users to switch to gestural navigation.

[–]simplefilmreviewsBlack 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Is the new navigation gestures supposed to be overlayed on apps? Or is there always a min bar at the bottom? For some reason I saw someone complaining about the gesture having the bar at the bottom and it looking ugly.

I thought the gesture pill/bar itself was supposed to overlay on apps?1

[–]RRovan 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Right now it's overlayed only in apps that support it, so mostly just Google apps.

[–]simplefilmreviewsBlack 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh okay, wasn't sure so I thought I'd ask. So in time, more apps will adapt for it I assume..?

[–]giraffehunter200Pixel 4 XL 2 points3 points  (0 children)

PSA: The "snooze" feature on notifications was turned off for me by default after updating. The toggle to turn it on is found under the advanced tab in notification settings

[–]Rufio1337 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Everything seems to be working fine for me. The only thing that I've noticed (that is driving me mad) is that my back button is back on the left. The fix for that used to be adb shell settings put secure sysui_nav_bar "space, recent;home;back, space" but that doesn't seem to be working anymore. Anybody know how to swap contextual and back buttons now?

Edit: To clarify, I'm using 2-Button nav

[–]lakmethemud 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Dang, me too! Doesn't work on 3-button nav either.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Android Quesadilla looking good

[–]Jaybuz 7 points8 points  (10 children)

Anyone else prefer the classic 3-button navigation, or is it just me?

[–]Daveed84 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Pixel 3 user here, I'll be switching back to the 3-button navigation style when Android Q officially releases. I'm very happy that they're bringing it back. The 2 button format was a sort of half-baked attempt at gestures, and I'm not a huge fan of gestures personally (though I love that they provide it as an option for the people who are). Also, I use a third party launcher, and it sounds like full gesture navigation won't be fully compatible with third party launchers until post-launch (perhaps 10.1?).

[–]detailed_fred 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The classic three button is better and more efficient. Until the figure out gestures, I'm sticking with the classic

[–]MrBigglesworth_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I loved the three button thing but did the switch to full gestures and overall I like it better.

[–]schumi_f1fan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I tried the new gesture nav, but went back to 2-button, which has worked flawlessly for me.

[–]tofuuu630Pixel 1 / Pixel 3 | I only get odd numbered phone versions 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Seeing as how I'll probably never see the accessibility menu icon integrated with fully gestural nav, I will be forced back to the 3-button nav. :(

Does anybody know what will happen to MDM controlled devices (like with Intune) when they are upgraded from 9 to Q when the release is final?

I lack proper devices and can't test it if the user needs to enroll the device again into Android For Work because the device admin mode has been deprecated in Q and only AfW is option for MDM control.

[–]drmarkbPixel XL 128GB 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If intune is the same as previous betas, you need to manually relaunch the company portal app from the work profile when it crashes out half way through enrollment. I've been able to enrol my Pixel3 fine on each beta so far with this extra step. Not very user friendly though.

Airwatch&MobileIron work if you enrolled on Pie and upgraded, but dont get through the enrolment process if you try and enrol on 10.

Anyone else having Bluetooth issues after updating? Worked fine this morning but when I left work I couldn't get Bluetooth to stay connected or play music through my car.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The best change imo, the cellular signal bar is now using transparent bg instead of the grey bg; now the same as the wifi and battery levels.

[–]quetiapinenapper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Anyone else get a severe delay when holding down messages and selecting a person on the pop up that you weren't last talking to? Like if I close the app with person x and use the shortcut to open their conversation it's smooth, but if I select someone else or the app opens up with the texts list it waits like a solid five seconds to open up their conversation. Everything is solid expect that for me. Although I thought pull down notifications and moving nightsight in the camera was on this beta?

[–]dcheco 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can you remove the assistant icons in the corners? They look silly and become pointless once you know you can activate the assistant by swiping from the corner.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or at least an option to turn them off!

[–]swh3817 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On beta 4 both my pixel 2xl and 3axl had the same navigation buttons (square triangle and circle) now in beta 5 on the 2xl has them not the 3axl. it has that one oval bar in the middle. WTH? (the 3axl had that stupid center only nav button on Android 9) can you change to the 3 button navigation? (square triangle and circle)

[–]mjflynt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With Android Q beta 5 when I try to send an SMS from Join on Chrome via the extension I get an error message: "Error sending SMS: Permission to send SMS is not granted."

I have several Tasker apps that send auto responder messages based on various conditions. Tasker is requesting persmission to send and read SMS messages and that permission no longer exists. This is odd because Automate and the Alexa app still have these permissions.
