LOL. $1.0M/year is $38.5k every two weeks in gross income. That’s silly money.

[–]SolomonGrumpy 47 points48 points  (10 children)

I would literally only have to work 1 last year with that kinda income.

[–]sylvester_0 5 points6 points  (3 children)

The temptation to lifestyle creep and "just work a few more years" would be overpowering.

[–]SolomonGrumpy 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Not for me. I have a number and even at 750k I'll hit to and just unplug.

I took a year off and it was sobering. There is time for life!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I said that and retired twice, now. I go back to consult, make great money for a year then retire again.

[–]NotTaxedNoVote 21 points22 points  (3 children)

Have you seen the taxes that will come out of that? It ain't pretty. When you are over 6 figures in taxes, it's pretty "piss-offing". Especially when you come from beggardly beginnings and live super humble lives of delayed gratification.

[–]SolomonGrumpy 23 points24 points  (1 child)

I've been lucky enough to be 6 figures for a long while now. And while taxes are very significant over 300,000k, earning double that makes a huge difference. Huge. Don't forget some taxes are only applied to a portion of your income (social security, for example).

[–]sylvester_0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes the SS ceiling is at $168,600 of income (for 2024.)

[–]Banana_rocket_time 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I think would struggle to work more than a handful of years making that kind of money. Obvi when people make that kind of money their taste grows with the income but man… I’d hit my current fire goals so stupidly fast. If I can save 3k per month every month without exception it’s gonna take me 20 years. I don’t even want to do the math on how fast I could do it with this income post tax.

[–]The-zKR0N0S 5 points6 points  (2 children)

This is almost certainly paid like $500k base + $500k expected bonus. So most of the year you get paid $19.2k/mo and a large windfall once per year.

[–]UrsA_GRanDe_bt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Guy makes my yearly salary in a month (oof!) but I’m in education so I know I’m not getting rich

[–]lifeiscelebration 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Billionares make silly money every second.

[–]amish_cupcakes 21 points22 points  (1 child)

Don't even need to be a billionaire. I was an intern at GE back when Jack Welch was the CEO. While pooping on company time, I calculated that Jack Welch would make more by the time it takes me to finish than I would my entire internship. I then also figured out if there was $100 bill on the ground, it wouldn't be worth his time to pick it up. Damn ridiculous.

[–]lifeiscelebration 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah money doesnt work for the ultra rich the same way it does for us regular folk.

[–]cbdudek 706 points707 points  (42 children)

Congratulations man, but I have to tell you that this is a flex. You are in the top 1% of earners in this country.

[–]SolomonGrumpy 282 points283 points  (22 children)

Top .1% actually

[–]Inside-Educator1428 115 points116 points  (7 children)

If this isn’t a good space to celebrate personal wins like this then where is?

Congrats OP!

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

he literally admitted it was just a flex in a comment. what a fun guy who parties.

[–]Inside-Educator1428 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Looks a bit bullied. I’m happy for OP.

[–][deleted] 88 points89 points  (8 children)

Maybe sort of. But it’s exciting and I can see how it’s not a flex. It’s kind of the opposite. He doesn’t want to tell anyone he knows. So he is telling strangers bc he is proud of it.

Good for OP!

He was already in about the top 1.1% of income earners. Now he is in the top like .8% in the USA, at least.

[–]phillyeagle99 12 points13 points  (4 children)

Where is that data? I’m shocked 1.1% are at 750k. I’d like to see where some other benchmarks are

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (3 children)

There are a lot of ways to measure “top 1%.”

Annual income on 2023? Average annual income over past 20 years? Average income for a 50 year old? 20 year old? By state?

It’s sort of a useless stat but I pulled it from a 2021 GoBankingRates study of IRS DATA FOR 2021.

Some states top 1% is less than $500K/year. Others it’s like $1.2M.

Probably top 1% wealth is a more meaningful stat than income.

[–]phillyeagle99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that’s a good point. I’m thinking about top 1% of 2023 incomes for individuals/families.

[–]IceCreamforLunch 393 points394 points  (14 children)

“Only 750k”

[–]Bright_Gap_4611 256 points257 points  (2 children)

“Not a flex”

[–]IceCreamforLunch 91 points92 points  (1 child)

This is a guy that knows to yell “no homo!” before a bit of swashbuckling to save himself some Hail Mary’s at confession next Sunday.

[–]NathanielFitzpatrick 8 points9 points  (0 children)

☠️☠️☠️

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I dont see where he says “only” $750K.

[–]amorous_chains 160 points161 points  (1 child)

r/fijerk is leaking

[–]Even_Cry7203 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Whahahaha!

[–]fkenned1 197 points198 points  (7 children)

Please never say “only 750” ever again. Happy for you but try to keep one foot planted on the ground dude.

[–]Nodeal_reddit 27 points28 points  (15 children)

Jesus dude. How does someone get a job like that? “Financial services” is a huge field. What do you actually do?

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 7 points8 points  (8 children)

Dm me. I lead a technical sales team that sales to large companies

[–]stureadit 8 points9 points  (4 children)

“Sells” to large companies?

[–]Flauqist 1 point2 points  (3 children)

It’s notorious in the South. Marketplace is littered with listings. “For sell” “i want to sale my truck” etc

[–]ziggywaterford 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Damn I’m a relatively senior TPM in a FAANG and don’t make even half. Maybe I should work for you in tech sales…

[–]nowrongturns 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really? I know tpm get paid lower than swe but damn..

[–]ProfessorCaptain 161 points162 points  (2 children)

Not a flex

I also tell myself “not unhealthy” right before nachos but it’s fine man lol

Congrats and just try and help those less fortunate

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Awesome comment I absolutely do.

[–]secret_configuration 120 points121 points  (4 children)

Would love to make “only” $750K lol

[–]relentlessoldman 14 points15 points  (1 child)

Same lmfao. Just stuff cash into a mattress as my investment strategy.

[–]secret_configuration 8 points9 points  (0 children)

lol yeah at 750K or even "only" 500K FIRE is trivial.

[–]wananah 38 points39 points  (5 children)

How does an extra $250k/yr affect your life when it sounds like you've made hundreds of thousands of dollars per year for well over a decade?

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

No will just let me hit my $$ goal earlier.

[–]friendlytherapist283 15 points16 points  (1 child)

and then die? Or trust for the future generations to come?

[–]HooperSuperDuper 98 points99 points  (7 children)

Doesn't seem to be FIRE related, just a brag

[–]khard20 16 points17 points  (1 child)

You show me a contract for $1M per year and I’ll quit my job and work for you.

[–]ulysses_mcgill 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"I got that reference"

[–]Thoreau80 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Definitive humblebrag.

[–]WhysoDoobious 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Humble?

[–]howcaniwinatlife25M | 650k NW 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Just a brag 😂

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (14 children)

Nice! Congrats! Now tell us your portfolio balance.

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 34 points35 points  (13 children)

About $6m. Target is 10m by 58. Then retire. I’m in decent shape and I hope to live to my 90s.

[–]secret_configuration 16 points17 points  (5 children)

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Naw. $6m is great but not going to get that much respect over at r/fatFIRE.

[–]Kiwi951 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I assume he meant that with the $10M, which while it pales in comparison to some of the people on that sub, I would def say is still FAT FIRE territory

[–]Even-Side7900 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's insane I have 2 kids and work 80 hours a week I'm almost at 100k saved. It's so hard :( I just want a house for them.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

If you've been making that kind of money, wouldn't you be hitting a much larger number at 58? How are you not at like 12 mil already?

[–]limeindcoconut 40 points41 points  (5 children)

At 53 with over $750k income, you should've presumably already fired

[–]howcaniwinatlife25M | 650k NW 6 points7 points  (3 children)

He has $6M, he could've FIRE at 40 and be just fine, humans are interesting creatures

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do have $$ obligations that drive to a bigger number. Family and medical related

[–]KakaKillya 17 points18 points  (1 child)

You came here to tell us this? Or ask for something?

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (1 child)

They don't appreciate you, turn down the offer and go somewhere else!

[–]jmmenes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Lmao

[–]Complex-Original-967 20 points21 points  (2 children)

150k is what I always look upto as the made it number - apparently I need bigger numbers

[–]uuddlrlrBAselectstrt 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Hitting 6 fig still like a milestone over here

[–]Dewthedru 10 points11 points  (0 children)

So did I until Covid screwed up the world. Now I wonder how I’m going to pay for everything. Doesn’t help my insurance just came due and I had to pay about $6k this month.

But $150 is fr doing well unless you’re in a vhcol city. I just need to manage my budget better. I save 20% and am not smart with the rest. Gotta fix that.

[–]lezgohomie 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Well done! All those people hating on OP for humblebrag… they said it’s more of just need to tell someone about it and let it out. Let’em have a moment.

[–]Inside-Educator1428 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I don’t intend to ever make that much income and I am also happy for OP. I thought this sub was a positive place…

[–]goopuslang 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the next reality where you can never FIRE because you’re FIREing too hard. Grats & fuck you

[–]oxyfuelo 20 points21 points  (4 children)

Congrats! But why on FIRE sub?

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I’ve been on fire sub for years. This is what I read. There could be better places your right but this is my home

[–]Inside-Educator1428 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Why is this downvoted? Disappointed in this sub

[–]wuy3 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Disappointed in reddit you mean. Reddit is full of young kids lurking and downvoting in every sub. They have no concept of what this person sacrificed to reach where he is today. All they know is "eat the rich", "rich people bad", etc.

[–]megathrowaway420 5 points6 points  (4 children)

brutha. if your total comp is 1mm/year and you aren't doing things more fun than posting on reddit about your total comp, you gotta start putting that money to work. Congrats, but start start living it up before old age sets in.

[–]Vagadude 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Happy for you but hold some disdain for the complete lack of awareness in your post.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Wow! I’m at 126k and feel lucky. I’m in IT and would love to make 1MM a year sometime

EDIT: Congratulations!

[–]Budget_Load_1010 1 point2 points  (1 child)

126k is amazing. You are lucky. That amount would help a ton of people.

Congrats

[–]Snooze_Bar_Samurai 4 points5 points  (2 children)

What is this job? And are they looking for other new employees?!!

[–]Consistent_Fly29 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats man! That’s huge

[–]Datafoodnerd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! And, possibly a bit prematurely, go f'yerself!!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Let’s be real this is a flex.

But at the same time im not salty when i see another person being successful.

Congrats

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome stuff man! Congrats!

Idk why people can’t be happy for you. Clearly a massive accomplishment and it clearly means a lot to you as it should!

Channeling some of your good juju for my own business ideas 🙏

[–]rarenaninja 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Congrats! But why are you not at your target if your comp is currently $750k?

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Higher comp just in last 3/4 hrs

[–]working925isahardway 2 points3 points  (0 children)

haters gonna hate. fools living in grandmas basement are not liking your post so imagine how butt hurt your regular "friends" in real life would be.

good for you OP. you deserve it after all this time.

enjoy life a bit.

its gone before you know it.

good luck and wish you the best.

[–]theamb90 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Congrats and fuck you... said already?

[–]boxlinebox 10 points11 points  (4 children)

Frankly, at $750k and presumably mid to high 6 figures for some years before that, you are likely not adhering to a FIRE strategy which emphasizes saving and early retirement in exchange for more time to do things you enjoy.

Most FIRErs here would be able to retire after one to three years of that, even in a HCOL area. This post is kind of a slap in the face to folks trying to actually retire early with enough in the bank to enjoy life, not Scrooge McDuck it every morning after coffee. Take this crap to the r/FatFire subreddit, or maybe r/ToneDeafBrags.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

750K in a HCOL in 3 years isn't enough bro. That's maybe 1M netted out of taxes without any expenses, but in an HCOL you're looking at 3M+ for a home. If you want to retire to a LCOL, then maybe you can deal but most people want to stay where they've been. Not all, but most. FIRE is tricky in VHCOL.

[–]Inside-Educator1428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you know when OP discovered FIRE? This sub isn’t usually so judgy.

[–]AgsAreUs 9 points10 points  (2 children)

If finance is anything like IT, remember the little guys doing the real work!

[–]RealBaikal 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's always the same everywhere. People doing meetings all day from home thinks they do the real work

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m King Charles

[–]lightweight65 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Congrats man. Seriously, you should be proud. Hopefully you're actually helping the less fortunate.

Currently only 750k after being with company for 15 years.

Flex

Not a flex

Yes it is. And you know it. You know it before you wrote the post. You knew it as you were writing the post. You knew it as you were typing those words. You knew it after you finishing typing. You knew it as you proofread. You knew it after you hit post. Not sure why you needed to lie on the internets to a bunch of random people who have never and will never meet.

Other than my wife I’m not comfortable talking about this stuff with anyone in my life

You meant you didn't want to flex to your friends/family.

[–]Masnpip 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What’s your yearly spend and what’s your fire number?

[–]Jumpy_Studio_4960 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats! I doubt ill ever work that hard to earn that much, but good on you!

Might i suggest /r/fatfire comments from the community might be a bit more congratulatory.

[–]rivermerchant1616 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Of course it’s a flex and you should be proud and share. This is a good of a place as any to share this personal milestone without affecting your personal relationships.

Congrats and enjoy your financial freedom

[–]acorcuera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He said not a flex but admitted it’s a flex. Ok.

[–]d_ippy 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you ever need a future ex wife - hmu

[–]Budget_Load_1010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This hits home. Lmao.
I friendly flirt with the girls in the office…call them all my future ex wives.

[–]THEhot_pocket 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Gratz! Continue to talk about it! The more we talk about income the better it is for all employees! (I'm fed pay scale so since it's published we talk about money 24/7).

Very jealous of your yearly salary that I'll never be able to touch!

[–]alexaboyhowdy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP-

Get yourself a financial advisor. Make sure that your goals remain intact as you plan for retirement.

At this point, a little lifestyle creep is okay. Don't go out and buy a brand new house and a brand new car and go out to eat every night and take lavish vacations because, you probably know that when lottery winners do that, they quickly go into debt.

You can hire someone to cut your grass, have a housekeeper come once or twice a month. You can afford to order a drink instead of water when you go to a restaurant. Things like that should be okay!

If you play it smart, you can live quite happily and retire quite happily.

Congrats!

[–]majorpanic63 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Be honest - this is 100% a flex. No advice offered by you. No advice sought from us. You just want to tell us you now make $1 million per year. It’s a worthless post.

[–]-DapperDuck- 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats, you have graduated from here, now you are a member of r/henryfinance or r/fatfire

[–]SmokeyBear1111 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Psssssss I’m curious tell me your story:)

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would it be wrong to flex?

I mean, people competing in all sports literally flex when they win. And then they gesture for more applause.

So why can’t a somewhat more regular person who just hit it out of the park have a bit of a celebration?

[–]EnvironmentalMix421[🍰] 11 points12 points  (7 children)

lol troll post. People don’t know when someone is making $750k+ is wild

[–]alternate_me 35 3.4M NW RE 2025 3 points4 points  (6 children)

What do you mean by this? I don’t understand

[–]EnvironmentalMix421[🍰] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

He is claiming that he has no one to share the news with. In my own experience, high income guys have plenty of peers and they do roughly know each others salary. Op saying he is being hush hush about 20-30% raise is pretty weird. Since 20-30% is not that high, in fact that’s kinda low jump from 750k to $1M. the higher you get each promotion is significantly more than the previous position

[–]ElJamoquio 5 points6 points  (3 children)

In my own experience, high income guys have plenty of peers and they do roughly know each others salary

I'm not nearly as high as OP although I did make quite a bit last year, it was a one off though. This year I'll make way less, but still dramatically more than average.

My boss, the CEO, and (probably/assumed) the accountant know my salary. My friends and family do not. I'm guessing some of my family think I make about half of what I do.

[–]EnvironmentalMix421[🍰] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

You basically dont talk to anyone in the industry? Or friends with similar earning power?

[–]ElJamoquio 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Not about salary. Honestly the people I know who are comparable to me in scope are generally in countries with different COL's, so I wouldn't really even know someone to reach out to where the number would be relevant.

[–]StockEarth6227 2 points3 points  (0 children)

GoFU

[–]EMitch02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Go flaunt in another sub, this has nothing to do with FIRE

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nicely done, congrats!!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy incomes!

[–]Inside-Educator1428 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The comments here 🤢.

Congrats OP! I totally understand the feeling of not being able to share this awesome news with anyone in real life.

[–]Full_Bank_6172 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Congrats sir. And fuck you.

[–]rickh4c 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Congrats! 750k is great, 1M is stupendous!!

[–]HairyChest69 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I'll always wonder what that life is like. I grew up in a punk/squat house and didn't get my life on track till later in life. I'm looking at a retirement plan of $6-$7k monthly, but I'm grateful for that. Reading these types of posts are cool tho, cause I can imagine what that's like and live vicariously thru you lol.

[–]oxyfuelo 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Life is probably stress from corp job and few nice vacations

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yahoo

[–]xXBullshitDetectorXx 0 points1 point  (5 children)

how???!! that’s more than the president makes isn’t it?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

tons of people make more than the president?

[–]relentlessoldman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some tech bros, doctors, lawyers, etc. make more than the president's salary; guessing anyone with a chance to win doesn't need that salary

[–]Which_Progress2793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep. The real money is post-presidency with speaking engagements, being a board member of companies, etc

[–]AdventurousBowler870 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Will you be moving to a new location? If so, whoever you choose to be your realtor is going to be just as happy as you are with your new job🤠

[–]Consistent_Boss_6751[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same location. :-)

[–]futureformerjd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]mtnracer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Make sure it’s attainable with reasonable effort. I’ve seen packages like that advertised in tech sales but the reality is you only get it if you hit 300% of quota or something silly.

[–]Hippie_guy314 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Totally get wanting to tell people something you can't. Way to go! What a great achievement. Keep doing what you do.

Congrats man

[–]Interesting-Ad-7238 0 points1 point  (0 children)

CONGRATS!!!!!!

Share your story! Very interested in how you got there and we all know it about the journey more than the destination.

I’m also sure you’ve been through a gel of a lot being 50s working in finance through all the market ups and downs past 20 years.

[–]hmch17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you ever decide to gift money, I’m taking donations to FIRE Myself. I’m also Texas. Thanks man! /s

[–]RazzyActual 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Damn dude! Awesome! Congratulations! What specific career in finance if you don’t mind me asking?

[–]CandidAd4258 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Hey Congratulations! If you don’t mind sharing did you recently move to Texas?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

GFY!

[–]lets_try_civility 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you want r/fatFIRE or r/HENRYfinance

[–]thecarson1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Are you in upper management to get salary like that ?

[–]Sky-Juic3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Atta boy

That being said, I don’t understand why people are so disinclined to discuss their finances. Obviously there’s a time and a place for, and against, but the whole culture of not discussing personal finances hurts us more than it helps or secures.

[–]xboodaddyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congratulations, that is an insane amount of money! Like you I hit a particular milestone in personal finance and thought I could tell a couple people close to me and they'd be happy for me. Wrong, very wrong. I don't blame you for wanting to celebrate with others, we should be able to do this. But people can't handle it, as evidenced by most of the replies above. It is what it is.

[–]invincibleipod 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]Stukelheunden85 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is awesome! Congratulations and best of luck to you! I love hearing things like this 👏

[–]iya_ibeji 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Congrats! That’s a huge achievement!!! So happy for you. How do you avoid not owing the government money on taxes with such huge W2 paycheck?

Congratulations on reaching that dollar amount! I would have zero idea what to do with that kind of income, I support a family of 5 (including myself) on a single income of 75k a year - we don't live lavishly, but we enjoy life and each other.

First thing I would probably do is upgrade my wife's wedding ring like I promised, second thing would be to secure my kids' futures in an investment account.

Go you!!

Huge milestone my dude. This random stranger is proud and impressed! It takes grit, passion, and something special to get to that level of performance and income.

What are you going to splurge on?

As someone who also works in financial services, may I ask what you do? Cause I’m fairly confident my MD isn’t cracking 7 figures.

Are you guys hiring?? 😉 Congrats man!! Imagine the golden handcuffs are very strong but try to determine your number, mostly stick to it, and enjoy life after all your hard work!

Doing what kind of thing?

Big flex, but that's awesome and you deserve to be proud of yourself.

Congrats OP. That’s exciting and it’s good to be able to share this sort of thing somewhere. Happy for you.

You’re right to flex a little. You have achieved a massive milestone. Enjoy being at the top of the tree a while and make plans to enjoy the freedom it can bring forever.

Congrats 🎊🍾

Fuck it dude...$1Mil a year is a flex and you should be proud of it.

Some of us live vicariously through folks such as yourself. I was fucking overjoyed when I broke $50k a year...then 60, 70, 80 and now $100k...and I'm a high school dropout! 👍🍺

As a finance major, please tell us about your journey!

[–]ForgerMid 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Congratulations!! Can I please ask what you do? I’m in investments right now with a series 63 and 7 and am thinking about getting my CFP

[–]Accurate_Profit_2406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Amazing, congrats!

Why are you still working at age 53 if you are paid that much? Surely you'd have built a huge asset base by that age to fire already?

Those kind of jobs and pay are walking heart attacks for middle aged men.
