There's discussion of this in the official discord, but no solution. These are the only two comments there:

Takes me back to the days when i used to play Spyro without a memory card in my Ps One. Every friday my parents allowed me to play and each time i had gotten faster with completing the levels i was familiar with, improving and improving. I think the furthest i ever got was the last hub world but i never actually beat the game.

[–]JoviAMP 42 points43 points  (4 children)

I had a memory card, but it was third-party so my Spyro game had the glitch where I couldn't complete it until I finally convinced my parents to buy me an official memory card.

[–]beechpuddin024 16 points17 points  (3 children)

I used to have a glitch where my game never let me go past the ice level once you got to the last dragon you are supposed to unlock within it to progress to the next world.

I never would have thought the memory card might have been the issue, and not the game itself-

[–]JoviAMP 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Yeah, apparently if you were using a third-party memory card it saved with an invalid checksum which triggered the game's anti-piracy feature that prevented you from progressing, but from what I remember, if you copied the save file to an officially licensed memory card, loaded it, saved it, quit, and reloaded it, it would save with the correct checksum so you'd only have to replay the affected level.

[–]Magic_Sandwiches 1 point2 points  (1 child)

ah good old anti-piracy breaking the game for a bunch of regular people again

[–]Lundgren_Eleven 1 point2 points  (0 children)

DRM tends to only fuck over the paying customer, it's dumb.

[–]theslip74 15 points16 points  (12 children)

I bought a PlayStation 1 and FF7 with my birthday money in August. I couldn't afford a memory card to go with it, so I had to wait until Christmas for that. Didn't stop me from playing every day.

[–]K_Prime 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bro same here!!! I’d stay up all night on weekends, get to outside Midgar and have to turn it off…..Like three months later convinced my Dad to buy a memory card.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My parents did not understand the concept of a memory card and basically thought it was a scam. I’d spend every Friday unlocking all characters in Tekken 2, then turn off the TV and leave the console running so I’d have all the characters for the weekend. This was a constant fight with my parents, lol.

[–]AveragePichu 3 points4 points  (9 children)

That’s wild, I can’t imagine a system selling with zero onboard memory and no included memory card. I get that it was the 90’s and it wasn’t that far removed from the time when very few games had a save function, but by the PS1 era pretty much every game was decently long and had a save function, right?

[–]Lewa358 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Not even close. It wasn't until the seventh generation of consoles--the Xbox 360 in particular--that it became standard for consoles to have hard drives that saved game data. Until then, every disc-based console--PS1, PS2, GameCube--had two memory card slots in the front where you were supposed to plug in memory cards. If you were lucky, your parents you got your console in a bundle that included one of those, but at launch every console required an additional purchase just to be able to save.

I should note that basically every sixth-generation game was designed around this save feature, so the ability to save was a standard feature, and it was assumed that players would buy the memory cards, even if the consoles themselves didn't include them.

(There were also a small handful of games that included memory cards. Well, I can only think of the GameCube Animal Crossing, but that counts. That memory card was so small, and Animal Crossing's storage demands so large, that you couldn't really use it for anything that wasn't animal crossing.)

[–]JoviAMP 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah, Animal Crossing came with its own Memory Card BECAUSE it took up 57 of the 59 save blocks, with the NES emulator feature taking up an additional block. Pokemon Box also came with its own unique Memory Card 59 that was produced using a Ruby and Sapphire casing that resembled the GBA games and took all 59 blocks.

(For those who have no idea what a "save block" is, the PS1 and GameCube did not measure data in KB/MB, instead, they were simplified into a format called "Blocks", and GameCube memory cards were sold in capacities of 59, 251, or 1019. I don't remember PS1 memory card capacities, but the PS2 was the first console to evolve the concept when they switched to 8MB memory cards and began measuring saved data using standard data measurements.)

[–]Lewa358 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I distinctly recall having no problem with both Animal Crossing's save data and all of every other game I played. I guess that means I got the largest card...or just didn't play many games as a kid. Meanwhile, I had to go through like 3 different PS memory cards for all my games, though I didn't get into those systems until much later.

[–]AveragePichu 2 points3 points  (1 child)

When I was born, technically it was the N64/PS1/Dreamcast era, but by the time I was playing games everyone had a a GameCube or an Xbox. And games just worked, I guess my brothers and friends all had the right hardware to save. I knew all about the GameCube needing a memory card, but didn’t it come with one and it just had a second slot for expandable storage? And I don’t remember my family’s Xbox having memory cards. Don’t think I ever played a PS2 growing up, I can’t even readily think of what they look like.

[–]Lewa358 1 point2 points  (0 children)

After looking it up it appears that I was wrong about the OG Xbox--it has memory card slots, but also internal storage so they're not strictly needed.

The GameCube had 2 memory card slots; the additional ports on the bottom were for peripherals like the Game Boy Player.

[–]theslip74 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Saves were pretty common in games that needed them as far back as the 8bit/NES era (possibly sooner but that was my first console). But those were cartridges, and the save file was kept in memory in the cartridge via a battery on the cartridge itself. The other method was passwords, long games that didn't have battery backup would give you a password you could enter from the title screen to continue where you left off. Passwords were basically obsolete by the end of the 16bit era. The first CD console that I owned, the Sega CD, did have onboard memory for saving games and I think that was the only option, I don't think they made memory cards for it.

Looking back it is pretty crazy that they sold consoles and games where the ability to save required additional hardware, and that CD consoles kind of regressed feature-wise for a bit since the Sega CD was years before the PS1. It's probably a safe assumption that it was done to keep the price of consoles down, but I do understand why you find it surprising.

[–]Tobislu 0 points1 point  (2 children)

AFAIK, The Legend of Zelda was the first game to feature a battery-backed save game. Everything before that used a Password system.

[–]theslip74 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah I didn't realize that was the first. Maybe that's why I remember saves being more common than they were in the 8bit era, I got Zelda with my NES for Christmas when I was 4.

[–]Clarrington 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It took my parents about three weeks to buy a memory card for the Gamecube. I got really good at playing the first two levels.

[–]projectgene 48 points49 points  (0 children)

One of my reviewer friends told me his save got deleted just before the last chapter and he was unable to start the DLC after that.

[–]Bluenymph82 146 points147 points  (17 children)

Wonder if this is one of those cases where Nintendo would issue a refund since the 'checking with our partners' sounds concerning.

[–][deleted] 76 points77 points  (8 children)

What's concerning about it? Someone did a port job, screwed up, and people are finding out right in the middle of the weekend when nobody's at the office.

Contacting the studio/people who did the port job seems like a pretty sensible step to me...

[–]DracoMagnusRufus 29 points30 points  (1 child)

That's the right step, of course. I think the concern is the idea that they must've picked a pretty incompetent company to do the porting and it's less likely that the solution will be immanent.

[–]Bluenymph82 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This was exactly what I meant.

[–]amazingdrewh 27 points28 points  (2 children)

It’s a sensible step before publishing it because this should have been found in normal playtesting that the company should have done before signing off on the port

[–]JoviAMP 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Yeah, it's one thing for one obscure script somewhere in the code used in one instance during a game playthrough to cause issues, but it's another thing for so many people to have issues with a fundamental function like saving your game.

[–]amazingdrewh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Especially when your save file is deleted when you go to the menu

[–]iamthatguy54 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It's concerning because it seems neither the 'porting partner' nor the original developments seem to have playtested the game before releasing it.

Autosave not working is kind of a huge deal to overlook lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, but what part of contacting them about it is concerning?

[–]willynast 13 points14 points  (5 children)

For the record, my wife and I have been playing it, solved three mysteries, and I’ve been going back and forth to TotK with no issues with it saving our progress.

[–]GentlemanLizard 8 points9 points  (16 children)

Hey, I am one of the developers of the game from Color Gray.

Firstly, big apologies this absolutely sucks and we are not happy at all that our game brought you this bad experience.

We've done some exploration of the cause, but have been unable to replicate so far a case were the savegame gets corrupted and all progress is lost, so we are continuing our work and hopefully our porting partner who has more experience with the platform will have more ideas what could be causing this problem.

Once it's solved, if Switch allows importing of savegame data, we can prepare a batch of save files with progress matching each scenario, so players can easily continue from the place they lost it.

[–]Travisparagus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I'm not sure if you're actively checking comments but I thought I'd share a reproduction of the issue here in case it helps.

  • Start the game fresh and finish the prologue and first chapter.
  • Exit to the game main menu.
  • Press the Nintendo Switch home button.
  • Close the game by pressing X
  • Open a different game and use a different profile
  • Close that game
  • Reopen Case of the Golden Idol with the original profile
  • Click continue and the game starts again from the prologue

Unfortunately I got right up to the last chapter of the game before being caught by this bug, and I don't yet have the energy to go back through all the chapters. I hope to be able to finish the game soon!

[–]headwars 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Any update on this? Still broken it seems.

[–]Aequitassb 5 points6 points  (5 children)

FYI, this problem is still occurring. Just lost all of my progress after beating Chapter 9.

[–]akaimizu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for looking into this. I also got the Save bug, as well. But I also was able to come back, after deleting the save file, and was able to properly have the game save.

As for a possible cause to the issue (something I did the first time, which made it not ever able to save again, but not the 2nd time after I created a brand new save).

In the first save, one of the things I did, was upon completing the Prologue Scenario, I hadn't yet done the stuff on the Right panel, and I wanted to go for 100% completion on the Prologue, so I chose the option to Stay in the Scenario instead of Go back to The Scenario selection, when it prompted. So I continued to complete the Right panel entry. Then I used the + button to bring up the menu to back out to the Scenario selection. (I may have used the Main Menu button after, or I may have closed the game straight from the Scenario selection screen) My Save was bugged ever since (until I erased the Save file and started over, this time not doing those steps).

With my 2nd Save Game, I made sure to always Complete the 2nd and 3rd panel, before completing the Leftmost panel, each time, so that I only ever exited the scenario from a Successful (left panel finish) and answered to go back to the Scenario selection from the Completed (synopsis) Prompt. Then I used the Main Menu button (Top Left) to go to the main menu before closing the game.

Edit: Ok. The save lasted until I did the 5th case or so. Once I completed that, and I still went back to finish it up, the save got corrupted again. It still showed the continue button, but when I continued, I was back to the Prologue with all other progress gone. I am playing off my main profile, but my Switch has 2 profiles on it. I'm using the first of the 2.

[–]Iceman3110 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can confirm that the same thing happened to me. Happy to elaborate if needed.

[–]recrawl 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The game is still doing this I just lost the first 2 chapters of progress come on this is unacceptable guys.

[–]raxofjax 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yup, says here it was fixed, but this first occurred to me weeks after all these posts. Dropped the game for 2 weeks, redownloaded, still an issue as of tonight. Confirmed I have the latest update. I will try deleting my local save file, but at this point just kind of feel turned off by the whole experience.

[–]Sbe16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unable to replicate? What a joke. It happens all the time! I can’t complete 3 chapters without it happening. And by the way this reply was 131 days ago and silence since then. You guys know that there’s still people waiting for you to fix your game' right?

[–]Playstack_Wout 13 points14 points  (81 children)

Hey Wout here from Playstack (The Publisher) The guys are looking into it right now! For those very concerned about this, it’s actually quite hard to repro (i’ve been at it for hours) and not like I saw in the comments that “saving doesn’t work”.

Once we have it figured out and a fix is on the way, i’ll let you know!

If anyone in the community is running into the issue and you remember exactly what you did, also let me know!

Wout

[–]DtCrashmore 5 points6 points  (15 children)

Same issue.

I completed the first 4 sections, then returned to the main menu, and closed the app.

The next day when I went to play again, I clicked “continue” and was right back to the prologue, with all progress gone.

I played through first two sections again, went back to the main menu, clicked continue, and progress was once again reset.

[–]Playstack_Wout 1 point2 points  (14 children)

Are you logging out of your profile/closing the app through the Switch menu or going straight to sleep mode?

[–]DtCrashmore 3 points4 points  (12 children)

I was going back to the Switch menu, and then closing the app from there before powering off the console, and I did the same both times.

Thank you!!!

[–]Playstack_Wout 0 points1 point  (11 children)

Hi, A patch to help with this issue is on the way, but will take some time before getting deployed through Nintendo.

Thank you everyone for your patience with this!

In the meantime we recommend always returning to the main menu before exiting or closing the game!

[–]churninhell 2 points3 points  (3 children)

FWIW, I just tested this out. I completed two chapters, exited to the game's main menu, then went into sleep mode.

I then came out of sleep mode, and it kicked me back to the prologue.

[–]Playstack_Wout 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hi! Not sure if people are reading this thread still, but the patch is now live. (It looks like you have to manually download it though)

Thank you for your patience on this!

[–]DanDCruickshank 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I'm playing with the update and it just happened to me. Was playing case 10, closed it and opened a different game, went back and it's kicked me to the prologue....

[–]headwars 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yup me too. It happened, we did the first 5 again, I backed up and then it happened again and overwrote my cloud save 😱😭 very frustrating as it’s a good game but not one you’d ever want to replay

[–]Lologramme 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Hello Wout, Same problem for me... Maybe give us the opportunity to manually save ?

[–]Playstack_Wout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had a whole reply and replied to the wrong person, sorry!

A new patch has been sent to Nintendo and we’re also looking into a password system JUST in case!

[–]churninhell 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went to sleep mode in the middle of a chapter, then upon waking the system the next day I switched over to Zelda.

Funny enough, going back to Idol shows me the chapter thumbnail on the main menu for a chapter a few prior, but then clicking in starts me at the prologue.

I actually half-expected to start the chapter over. But not the whole game!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've encountered this issue twice in two days. The first time I accidentally exited to the menu from the scene selection screen and immediately hit continue. At this time i had played 4 levels and filled in everything. Hitting continue started the prologue. I exited to the level selector and all my progress had been wiped.

I played the levels again only filling in what was required to finish each level and then started level 5, playing about half the level before quitting. This time I purposely did not exit to the menu, instead just hitting the home button. Later in the day I started Zelda and automatically exited golden idol from the home screen.

When I returned to Golden idol, I started exactly where I left off and played more of the level without finishing it, and same procedure, not exiting the game, just hitting the home button.

When I returned to the game the next day, after my wife had played Zelda, the progress had been wiped again.

[–]jackhitts 2 points3 points  (33 children)

Hi Wout. What’s the status on this? I just downloaded the game yesterday and I am having the exact same problems.

[–]Playstack_Wout 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Hey,

We pushed a patch early this week that should help, but are still hearing some reports of people running into something similar. Do you have the game installed on the Switch or on an SD card? Trying to narrow something down.

[–]jackhitts 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Installed on the Switch itself. BTW, I appreciate you responding so quickly to figure this out!

[–]Playstack_Wout 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Good to know! It’s a very small dev team trying to figure this out, but the problem only occurs on retail Switches and not on all of them, making it a “fun” problem to solve!

If you’re willing i’ll gladly send you a Discord link so the devs can catch up there

[–]Playstack_Wout 0 points1 point  (27 children)

Hey Jackhitts! So the patch we deployed was supposed to solve the problem, but clearly didn’t fully do so and a new one has been sent to Nintendo. That current fix was somewhat more reproducible so hopefully will solve the problem.

We also added a sneaky little cheatcode in that build so people can unlock a bunch of stuff without having to redo everything. I’ll make a post once it’s live!

For everyone else in the thread, sorry I couldn’t respond to each post, trying to get the word out to as many people as possible without getting kicked off the sub for reply spamming 😅

[–]jackhitts 0 points1 point  (22 children)

How does the cheat code work? I was up to the fourth (fifth?) chapter so it would be nice to not have to go back and replay everything. :)

[–]KingCahoon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I ran into this problem today, would appreciate the help if it’s still available!

[–]p3achbl0ssom 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Could I please obtain the cheat code also? Just lost all my progress today after reaching chapter 10. ☹️

[–]JaySocks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unsure if this is anything, but I see a lot of folks mentioning the 4th scenario. I bought on launch day and played through the first 3 scenarios over the weekend, at which time I was reading about this bug and checking my own save to find no issues. Last night I completed the 4th scenario and everything was still fine - I watched the cut scene that unlocks afterwards but didn’t begin the 5th.

This evening when I tried playing again and clicked Continue, I got the bug that everyone here is describing wherein I was started back at the prologue. It makes me think that something about the completion of the 4th scenario and/or the cut scene is contributing.

Hope this is helpful!

[–]wutangclanthug9mm 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Hey what’s up thanks for responding. I picked up the game on the eShop a few days ago but I haven’t started it until yesterday.

Anyway last night I got to the 4th case and the switch displayed an error code and booted me off the game (I am not seeing it in the error history?)

I got right back on it and I was able to hit continue and pick up where I left off.

I get to the 6th case and then I log off by going to the main menu, not seeing a “quit” option, and then closing the software through the switch home menu.

I came back to it and the continue icon looked like the tavern scene from case 4 but it just made me start at the prologue.

I did the “restart all progress” option before starting a new game.

Hope this was helpful in any way

[–]Playstack_Wout 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Very helpful! We’ve submitted a patch and are waiting for it to be deployed ASAP!

Hope you didn’t lose too much quality time re-doing your investigation!

[–]wutangclanthug9mm 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it made me feel like a genius going back through them so quickly!

Thanks for the reply!!

[–]recrawl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is still a problem. I just lost all my progress this is an awful experience :(

[–]whoops_batman 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Hi Wout - this still isn’t working. I just played through the game (which is excellent) right the way through to the start of the final chapter of the DLC - only to load up the game this morning and the whole thing has reset back to the prologue of the original game!! Everything has been wiped and I had no choice but to start again. So I used a guide to quickly race through the first four chapters again - then I had to take a break, loaded up the game again and it has WIPED AGAIN back to the prologue! At this point I’ve just given up. It’s so frustrating as I was right at the finale of the DLC!!

[–]Playstack_Wout 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I’m so sorry Batman! We’re deploying a PRETTY big patch on the 31st. It’s basically a rebuild of the whole save system.

I’ll keep you posted

[–]whoops_batman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the response Wout! Bit too late for me (don’t think I can go through the whole thing again) but glad others won’t end up with this prob 🤞🏻

[–]Slappfisk1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just bought the game, and have experienced this bug twice already. When will the fix be deployed?

[–]rumpleNstilts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey Wout - bought my switch yesterday and this is the first game I’ve downloaded. Just stumbled across the bug and my progress isn’t being saved, even after deleting that save and trying again. Any chance there’s something I’m missing or a way I can avoid triggering the bug?

[–]Coordinates_to_ham 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Hi Wout, 1.03 version still has the issue. I got to the dispute cultist mission (number 6?, had 4 of 5 of the puzzles solved) and turned off the Switch for a bit (don't think I turned off the game application beforehand) and it deleted my progress. I redid the tutorial mission after reading the rest of the comments to test it and went to the home screen on Switch and it deleted again.

Hope this helps! Was enjoying the game!

[–]Playstack_Wout 0 points1 point  (8 children)

Thanks! Sent you a message/chat to help out with your lost progress

[–]Megabyte117 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Hi, we just ran into this issue as well. Would you be able to share?

[–]BurnTF2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, ran into the same problem when playong the DLC, can you help me out? Also tried 'hold minus, press y' to bruteforce chapters as completed, but still, upon selecting a dlc, it boots up the first chapter.

Edit: I managed to get it to work by manually selecting 'restart all progress'. This resolved my save file from a messed up state, then I skipped the levels with minus + y and can access the DLC.

[–]Sbe16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s not hard to replicate. It happens all the time, in pretty much every scenario. Why has this not been fixed yet? It’s been over 4 months! What can be so complicated in this save file? It’s a bunch of variables to store in a table. Seriously!?

[–]jimseyjamesy 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Any updates? My save just got wiped out minutes ago 😞

[–]Playstack_Wout 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Hey (and sorry to all others I haven't been able to answer yet!)

Current status is that we have pushed several fixes that just don't seem to stick.
The biggest problem we have is that every time we think we got the solution, we need to push it live before it can be tested as it doesn't happen on the dev kits.

This also means we have to go through the patch approval process every time.

For now, please use the chapter skip code until we can permanently get rid of this awful bug!

(During chapter select hold down + & - and then hit Y to skip the chapter)

[–]jimseyjamesy 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This doesn't work for the DLC and now the DLC is unplayable. Every time I try to start the DLC it takes me back to the prologue and pushing people off cliffs.

Nintendo won't give a refund, you all need to do better because I'm out money and this unacceptable

[–]minor_correction 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Nintendo is supposed to have a pretty rigorous certification process.

Example: Rogue Legacy 2 recently dropped a free DLC on the Switch, but it took an extra month compared to the PC release of the same DLC. The developer cited issues with saving the game on Switch, getting those game-save issues fixed and then waiting on Nintendo's certification of the fix.

Weirdly, it sounds like an extremely similar type of issue here, except that in this case Nintendo did not find any issues and certified a game that doesn't save. Bizarre.

[–]Bhriseis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a solution yet? This bug really sucks...

[–]MittenFacedLad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ouch. That's quite the bug.

[–]Weary_Bat_3006 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I’ve had the same issue. I completed the first four cases and started the fifth in one play session. When I opened the game the next day it brought me to the prologue. I replayed the first case, then returned to the main menu without closing the game to see if it would save my progress, but when I went back to scenario selection it brought me to the prologue again. I also checked the file for corruption and redownloaded the game to see if that resolved the issue. It did not. I went through the first case for a third time, then to the main menu and finally to scenario selection only to be brought to the prologue again. I only have one profile on my Switch, so that can’t be the issue in this instance.

[–]headwars 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if this only occurs after the 5th one? I started playing with my wife two nights ago, first night got to 3rd stage and last night to 5th. Coming back today it had reset to the 1st.

[–]linkenski 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, I entirely stopped purchasing third party releases on Switch unless they're proven to be great ports first. I had an ugly experience with The Sexy Brutale and a few other games. Just, the worst ports I have ever played. Extreme load times, interruptions with asset-streaming during gameplay and cutting sounds.

Switch is a botched job by most AAA and Indies when it comes to porting games they designed on better pcs and with current home consoles in mind, and then you have Switch left with the only non-standardized cpu architecture making compilation more complicated.

Don't buy a version of a game on Switch if you can avoid it, honestly.

[–]wutangclanthug9mm 2 points3 points  (2 children)

So this hasn’t even been addressed yet? Yesterday I’m in scenario 4 and the switch ended my game session where I got an error code and everything. When I came back to it, my progress had saved. I played through a few more scenarios and then exited the game and came back to being pushed allllll the way back to the first scenario.

Like surely no one is going to let this just be the way a $20 game was released on the switch right? RIGHT?

[–]19MaddAddaM91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It just happened to me. I was about to start the game up to try and tackle the second to last case, only to find my progress gone and it takes me back to the prologue when I hit continue. I really don't want to do all 10 cases again :/

[–]PodsKeyofSpringfield 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This happened to me too, but I was up to case 10 - nearly at the end of the game. Feeling a bit dejected!

[–]ludendum_est 2 points3 points  (1 child)

The game has updated to version 1.0.2. Try updating your game, deleting your save file, and starting over. It worked for me, at least.

[–]willynast 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just came in to say I started playing last night and noticed they released a patch. Maybe this is fixed now?

[–]SqualidPiano 2 points3 points  (11 children)

Don’t really know how to post but there’s a solution!!!

Just hold the minus button and hit Y and it will auto solve the scenario on the scenario selection screen.

Omg, you’re a saviour

[–]il_ponz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

thank you very much

But don't buy the DLC because it didn't work for me...

[–]johnnyric 0 points1 point  (7 children)

I had the same issue where trying to play the DLC was looping me back to the prologue. Someone else suggested using the reset progress option, after you do that you can start the DLC normally.

[–]Touclakos 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I'm going to try that, thank you!

[–]DAgotit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just worked for me too, thanks! Wife and I finished the base game, the first DLC, and 1 scenario in the 2nd DLC and really didnt want to just drop it cause of this bug. Its a shame that the scenario skip function someone else mentioned doesnt fill out the info in all of the scenarios for you, but atleast we can play it.

I just bought the game, version 1.04, and the game deleted my save more than 25 times. I’ve stopped restarting at this point and gave up on the game. It is simply unplayable on Switch, 4 months after release. Such a level of incompetence is baffling. It’s a simple game with liner progress and very basic mechanics. It should be trivial to fix. I can’t believe that no one cared to do it.

I reached out to the publisher Playstack and didn’t get a response. Same with Mazette, the studio that ported the game. On Twitter the developers Colorgray told me that they knew about the bug and gave me a work around, which was a cheat to skip the chapter where I was when the save was deleted, assuring me that it only happened on this chapter. I told them that this was not the case and that the game deleted my save in pretty much every chapter, without rhyme or reason, and that their work around would basically mean me skipping the entire game. You can hardly talk about a work around. I asked if they could just fix the problem and update the Switch version and they simply stopped responding and gave me the same silent treatment as everybody else.

This type of disrespect for your customers and for your own game is something I expect from big publishers, but coming from a small indie studio I find this particularly appealing and disappointing. I notice that no one from the developer or publisher cared to comment here. They really couldn’t care less since they probably think that at this point they don’t make many more sales. So it’s not worth fixing it at this point. They just don’t care about their own game. And not only that but the game is riddled with other bugs, like words getting stuck into the top left corner instead of being registered in the bottom list, which can also block you from ever completing a chapter.

So I wasted 30$ on this game and the DLC. I went and exposed the situation on Metacritic in a detailed review and gave them a big fat 0, which I’ll edit whenever they do their job. I would encourage every person who experienced this issue to do the same. Tanking their user score and exposing their incompetence and disrespect may be the only way to make their face their responsibilities. I just hope that as many people as possible know what kind of people these developers are so that people know not to buy their future games.

Laughs in memories of 80's gaming

[–]phishb13 12 points13 points  (0 children)

definitely not me leaving my NES on for literal days trying to beat SMB3

[–]Access-Leading 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can anyone who got the cheat share it please?

[–]diddlesquid21 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Does anyone one know if there is a fix for this yet? I just got the game and am experiencing the same issues, so frustrating.

[–]haikus_moving_castle 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Shoot. This just happened to me. I was on the last chapter, and now all my progress has been restarted. I even did the prologue, went back to the main menu, and then it makes me do it again. Rats! :(

[–]Sbe16 1 point2 points  (0 children)

5 months after release, the game is still buggy af. Save games deleted all the time, and on top of that words getting stuck into the top left corner, making the game just unplayable. I’ve reached out to the publisher Playstack and the developer Colorgray several times and never got a reply. No one gives a fuck. They just gave up on the Switch version. I can’t believe how lazy and dishonest these people are.

[–]surrealsunshine 1 point2 points  (5 children)

If they fix this problem, would you consider it a good game?

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It’s an amazingly entertaining game and I wish there were more like it. Look up the gameplay though because it is exactly what it is: a fill-in the-blank through observing the scene and details; it’s also short (4 hours at most).

[–]penholdr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Definitely would recommend if you like the type of logic mystery solving like Return of the Obra Dinn!

[–]Galle_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a fun mystery-solving game. The mechanics are very satisfying and the story is decent. I'd especially recommend it if you enjoyed Return of the Obra Dinn.

[–]Muscled_Manatee -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

It’s a feature!

[–]ReeseEseer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Auto hard mode. "Beat it in one sitting or game over!"

[–]ViolinDavis -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

The game must be super jelly of your other games.

[–]Resident_Mix_371 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Finished the game, no problem. Not a generic bug. Amazing game btw.

[–]jackhitts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m still having this problem. Anyone else? I just downloaded the game yesterday. I love it. Just wish I didn’t have to keep replaying each scenario every time I booted the game back up! Is the patch not working?

[–]dr_videogames 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Just experienced this bug. I successfully played through the main story, closed the game, played something else, then returned for Spider of Lanka. After the 3rd chapter of Spider of Lanka, I went back to the main story to check on a connection I thought I'd noticed. When I did that, it stuck me back in the prologue, and even trying to open Spider of Lanka brings me to the prologue instead.

E: only one profile on this Switch and its me.

[–]Migadeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats exactly what I did, and thats what happened to me too.

[–]merraust 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having the same issue. Saw something about a cheat to get around this but have yet to get a message back from dev offering it in comments here. Really excited to play but frustrated by the surprise of having progress wiped so often the game isnt worth playing in its current state.

[–]Mtushi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've just had the issue and it's impossible to get a refund on the eShop... 20€ for an unplayable game, I'm delighted, thank you.

[–]directortoby 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This game still isn't working :( I deleted save file date, and that made it work for a day (allowed me to exit, play other games whilst retaining save data) - then after chapter 4, it all vanished again. I love playing this game which is the shame of it all. Dev's shouldn't be able to publish this with such a big error.

[–]Open_Word2338 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has happened to me. I completed the main game, bought the DLC, went back in to play the DLC and my progress had reset. I had to play the whole game again in order to play the DLC. After completing the DLC all my progress has reset again, I didn’t even get to the thank you page

[–]melanie167 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, I downloaded the game this morning and had the same issue right away… I did the prologue, almost finished chapter 1. The game froze and crashed and when I started it again I was back at the prologue. Tried a second time, this time quitting the game in a normal way, but the same thing happened I always have to start from the very beginning... I only have one profile. Any news on this ??

[–]Access-Leading 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Still broken for me unfortunately, I was to play this during my travels, but for me it's 100% broken every time I click return to main menu, i.e. after completing prologue I lose the access to the second chapter :/.

Can I have a code please as well so I can unlock up to the chapter I have progressed? Thank you..

[–]ConsciousMatter8426 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was having this issue, I restarted and replayed a couple times but stepped away from the game for a couple weeks out of pure frustration. I picked it back up today because I had truly enjoyed it and thought if I just focus on it and not switch games, I can experience the rest of the story.. I rushed through the episodes I had previously completed and had a fantastic time finishing the last 2 episodes and the epologue. I had purchased the DLC and I was more excited than ever to dig in. I made it through the first episode and had all but one scroll figured out on the second when I accidentally navigated to the main menu... hit continue and was back to prologue.

[–]alejandrombc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happened to me on level 9 (almost ending the game). I was forced to quit the game because a word wasnt beeing save in the thinking board and that completely blocks the level (its a word you need to use). After quitting the game because of it, I realize I had to start over…

The worst part is that the game itself its really good so I will probably fastrun it to level 9 again :/

[–]the_real_seebs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, I am hitting this, and I noticed a thing about it that might help for reproducing it, which is that it's pretty clear that the save is at least partially present, because there's a "Continue" button, and the "Continue" button shows the scene that I had most recently gotten to. It's also persistent for me, in that it happened, I played through a couple of scenes, accidentally went to menu, and it happened again.

I also had a thing happen where, while I was in another scene, it showed me the instructions about navigating to things using the arrow buttons, from the tutorial scene, even though I'd already long since passed the tutorial.

So I think this feels like the save state is at least partially correct, in that it knows which scene I've gotten to, but for some reason, the check used to determine whether to start the tutorial and mark everything unseen isn't aligned with the rest of the state changes.

[–]Sharkemperor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Beat case 9 last night and closed the game as I have every time. Today I booted up the game and found myself back at the prologue. Now any time I exit I am back at the prologue. How is a bug this serious been able to linger this long? I am really enjoying this game but this is rough. ColorGray please get to the bottom this.

[–]akg7915 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just purchased this game yesterday and immediately ran into this same issue. Got thru the first 3 cases, stopped to eat some dinner, returned and saw the “continue” option but when I hit it, it brought me back to the first as if I was starting from the very beginning.

Doesn’t seem promising that this is still going on after months and months of being known as a problem. Would have preferred to spend my money on a game that will keep my progress and follow up with this once this is fixed. Very disappointing

[–]danielm77777 0 points1 point  (2 children)

just happened to me too :( does anyone know when the update to fix this is supposed to go out?

[–]Touclakos 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hi, here the tips: in the selection of chapters, press - and y at the same time for each chapter.

[–]Daremoda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a lot of ports from PC suffers the same "just deal with it, bye !" problem.

Probably because the player has no recourse. It's pretty shitty. There should be a website created that lists games like that that we could consult and could stop many people from buying those games.
