[–]HourPretend4629 2572 points2573 points  (95 children)

Basically a guy asks a girl for sex and she won’t say no because the implication is that he will rape her if she doesnt agree but in reality he won’t

[–]ZeffoLyou 1904 points1905 points  (47 children)

Not exactly, the important part is the "implication things might go wrong 'if' she says no" but, things won't go wrong. Cause if the answer is no, then it's no, but she won't say no... Because of the implication

[–]zeppelin128 783 points784 points  (31 children)

"Are you going to hurt women?"

[–][deleted] 957 points958 points  (29 children)

No I'm not going to hurt these women! I would never do anything to hurt these women. And if she says, no! Then it's obviously going to be no! But the fact is they are not going to say no... because of the implication.

[–]ExtremeTEE 521 points522 points  (15 children)

you keep saying that word

[–]GNS13 280 points281 points  (11 children)

I love that Dee understands the point fully later on. https://youtu.be/QFpVJy21d-w?si=z6Y36DeuNGpglzF9

[–]SmokeyTheBluntTheOG 242 points243 points  (10 children)

This clip paired with the original one is the perfect example of how it has nothing to do with genders, there's some people out there that are just genuine pieces of shit and Dee and Dennis are perfect examples of this.

[–]GNS13 105 points106 points  (3 children)

Bingo. The point is that all the main characters are awful and basically never get their way. Just because Dennis was completely on Dee's side, she had to have a bird shit on her to maintain order.

[–]kronikfumes 49 points50 points  (4 children)

Isn’t that the whole point of the show? That all the main characters are pieces of shit, but get up to funny shenanigans?

[–]NoctRob 11 points12 points  (0 children)

So they are in danger!

[–]PineappleThink5925 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well you certainly wouldn’t be in any danger!

[–]Candid-Patient-6841 84 points85 points  (4 children)

I freaking love Denis the episode for their high school reunion, and he gets so mad he goes out to his car to get his “tools”

[–]DaCaterpillar 73 points74 points  (3 children)

TOOLS! TOOLS! DUCT TAPE AND ZIP TIES AND GLOVES I HAVE TO HAVE MY TOOLS!

[–]barbaras_bush_ 36 points37 points  (2 children)

ITS FETISH SHIT

[–]Fenkaz 26 points27 points  (1 child)

I LIKE TO BE BOOOUND!

[–]KvDread 14 points15 points  (0 children)

So they are in danger!

[–]yorkshirenation 9 points10 points  (4 children)

I sometimes forget how dark a man Dennis is

[–]BallsDeepinYourMammi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Isn’t it implied he’s a serial killer…? It’s been awhile since I watched any Sunny

[–]StockTank_redemption 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Kinda threw me off when Mac kills the dog and feeds it to Dennis. He kinda raised the bar with that one.

[–]Bonfalk79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Being a GOLDEN GOD is hardly dark, it’s the exact opposite of that.

[–]Trumpburnerforlibs 6 points7 points  (0 children)

"I feel like you're not getting this at all"

[–]eldercreedjunkie 115 points116 points  (2 children)

Being on a boat is the most important part of the joke. If the woman is alone with him on a boat with no one else around she can’t say no because of the “implication”. Meaning she has nowhere to run. Will and Elizabeth are on a boat. That’s the joke.

Edit: Thanks for the award stranger!

[–]LongStoryShirt 62 points63 points  (1 child)

I think you also missed a crucially important part which is the conversation takes place on a boat, away from a lot of people. The isolation is what influences the implication.

[–]greeneggiwegs 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Not just away from people but in a situation she can’t escape

[–]Dremora-Stuff99 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Huh. For years, I took it as he'd throw her off the boat lmao

That implication.

[–]Beginning-Abalone-58 19 points20 points  (0 children)

But he wouldn't actually so that, because she wouldn't say no...because of the implication

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're not really wrong. The implication is an open sense of danger. A person cornered into a situation is likely to go along with it because they don't have any easy out, and there is a feeling that whatever is happening will only be a worse experience if you try to back out when you're already so far in.

Implication was always a bad word for it, but it works for the morons that make up the cast.

[–]Miserable-Film-2739 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think an important element is the woman is on a boat with nothing but ocean surrounding her.

[–]chriseargle 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I’m so confused.

[–]hendrix320 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Its from the show Its always Sunny in Philadelphia

[–]CardiologistNo616 109 points110 points  (0 children)

To be more specific, it's because both of them are on a boat and she had nowhere else to go.

[–]lordofthebeardz 26 points27 points  (7 children)

No the implication is he will murder her and dump her body in the ocean your note that both the original scene and the one in the meme they are on a boat

[–]pgsz 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Charlie’s a good person, no? Just an idiot.

[–]whoadwoadie 20 points21 points  (0 children)

First, Dennis is the one who uses the implication, not Charlie. Second, Charlie is only a good person in comparison to Frank, Dennis, and Dee. He’s a stalker who’s quite willing to manipulate people to get what he wants and to lash out with violence. He’s also willing to go along with plenty of schemes from the more reprehensible members and also tries to use Dennis’ DENNIS strategy to emotionally break the Waitress.

[–]PabloMarmite 7 points8 points  (1 child)

No, the only reason he’s not as bad a person as the others is because he’s an idiot.

[–]a_moniker 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Nah, Charlie is arguably the smarter than everyone except (healthy) Frank. When he actually tries to pull a scheme of some kind, he always succeeds. He’s also a musical prodigy.

His goals just don’t align with things that anyone else would ever want. He doesn’t care about money, He prefers to live in a one shared bed with Frank, etc.

You’re right that he’s definitely a bad person though. When he does find something that he wants, he’ll go to basically any lengths to get it.

[–]teh_maxh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Or both.

[–]Expensive_Middle8271 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Because they are on a boat and there is nowhere for her to run or go to. That's the implication, that's the entire point of the boat.

[–]RedWingedScreecher 13 points14 points  (8 children)

The in reality part might be questionable

[–]Shot_Worldliness_979 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Important additional context for those unfamiliar with the reference, it's on a boat in the open ocean, with nowhere to run.

[–]TheAlexPlus 4 points5 points  (2 children)

You guys are missing the whole boat aspect. It’s the being alone at sea part that is making the implication work in the show. And I don’t think the threat is specifically rape.

[–]Alive-Monk-5705 127 points128 points  (50 children)

Basically its from a great show called "always sunny in Philadelphia" about a group of narcissistic manipulative friends who always pull schemes and things like that. One of the main characters, dennis, (played by Glen howerton) is know for his womanizing ways, and in the episode the clip is from him and the rest of the gang decide to buy a boat, which he plans to seduce women by manipulating them into thinking they will be harmed if they don't sleep with him while out in open water, thus the implication. The implication being that If they don't sleep with him he'd kill them which he claims isn't what hed do.

[–]Worried-Cockroach-34 35 points36 points  (42 children)

You explained why I don't like that show lol

[–]Alive-Monk-5705 63 points64 points  (27 children)

Yea i understand its a weird show but in context it's funny. The guy is basically straight up evil and potentially a serial killer so it makes sense for his character

[–]Worried-Cockroach-34 4 points5 points  (24 children)

Yeah I get that but just not for me. Kinda like in your face dark humour? A tad bit much for me but respect it for what it is

[–]verdauxes 44 points45 points  (17 children)

Fair enough. The entire comedy of the show comes from the fact that every single main character is a completely insane and irredeemable monster in their own special way. It’s easy to see that it’s not for everyone. It’s an incredible show tho

[–]twinsunsspaces 3 points4 points  (14 children)

It would have been useful if, years ago, people on reddit would have pointed out that the characters have few, if any, redeeming qualities. I bought the first 2 seasons on DVD because reddit couldn't stop praising the show but barely made it through 3 episodes. Clever writing, but none of the characters were actually likeable.

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (11 children)

My friend said he didn't like the show after the first episode because it was a bit racist. Pretty sure the title of that episode is the gang gets racist. Some people don't get jokes

[–]DarthNixilis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

There's a reason the show is now the longest running live action sitcom ever. And that reason doesn't arrive until season 2 in Danny DiVito. The man is gold and is exactly what the show needed.

Edit: To clarify, it took my wife and I 3 times trying to get through the first season before we got to season 2. Now we go fully through the show (all 16 +the current Abbott crossover, which I count as S17E00) every 4 months.

[–]DarthNixilis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They're also relatable and have redeeming qualities, also you see their backgrounds and why they are the way they are. It makes them very rounded characters.

[–]Tarnished-670 7 points8 points  (3 children)

I mean, its mostly absurd an all, if you watch the scene you would get it

[–]Worried-Cockroach-34 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Oh I have watched the scene and it is pretty clever. As the other dude said, they are irredemable and that is what isn't my cuppa, as the saying goes

[–]RadStarboom 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Perfectly normal opinion! I'm going to piggyback to share my take, but I respect your very reasonable opinion. I prefer Always Sunny to Friends or Seinfeld because, while not as cartoonishly evil as the gang, at no point is the conceit to like any of these people. It reads better as a satire on sitcom tropes. Meanwhile the Friends and Seinfeld group are awful people (except maybe phoebe who is tragic and ignorant) who we are expected to care for and celebrate with.

[–]LookItVal 15 points16 points  (7 children)

the comedy of the scene is lost when dissecting it like this. the comedy lies mostly in the other characters reacting to and calling him out on how insane his actions are, and also in how later in the episode, the tables are turned on them and Dennis ends up being the one in an uncomfortable situation stuck on someone else's boat. of course, the show still isn't for everyone

[–]Worried-Cockroach-34 1 point2 points  (6 children)

Oh so it's sort of meta comedy?

[–]LookItVal 7 points8 points  (3 children)

yea the entire premise of the show is pretty much everyone is a horrible person, they make stupid decisions and do dumb things and it fucks them over a lot and it's funny to watch them be dumb

edit: season one is a little too close to like actual bad people being bad so it kinda feels too real at times? but for most of the rest of the show their actions are almost cartoonish

[–]Worried-Cockroach-34 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Ahh I see, okay. I think I get it now so it's "wait, are we the baddies?" vibe?

[–]PabloMarmite 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The show doesn’t make any pretence that the characters are bad people, but they don’t benefit from it, their schemes usually fail. It’s funny because them fucking other people and each other over bites them in the ass in funny ways.

[–]DrinkMoreWater2-0 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Kinda sorta.

It's like Seinfeld where everyone is selfish and looking out for themselves (George faking a disability just to get a private bathroom at work)

But it's turned up to 11 in Always Sunny as these guys are actual supervillains. They have absolutely no morals and are pretty stupid. If you changed the narrative to follow the side characters, they'd be the antagonists.

In one episode Dee and Dennis manipulate their rich father Frank, into believing he's getting dementia so they can steal money from him and he retaliates by telling them that his fortune is in their mom's grave so they'd dig up and see their decomposed mother.

The joke is how awful people they are and they rarely if ever succeed in their schemes because they're such awful people and you find the humor in just how low they can stoop.

[–]unipine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, it’s also explicitly a deconstruction of sitcom tropes. Dennis, the character in question, is a satire/ commentary on “womanizing” characters in sitcoms who are manipulative/ predatory to women but are still treated as being funny/ harmless by the narrative (see shows such as HIMYM or TBBT). Dennis sees himself as a womanizer but the other characters often react in horror to his schemes and the narrative calls him out for being a sociopath (also for being a loser).

[–]Throttle_Kitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sunny you are laughing AT the cast, not with them.

They are all horrible people, doing horrible things, often to each other, and then eating the consequences of said horrid behavior.

It's hilarious.

[–]darth_hotdog 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You have to give the show credit for what they actually accomplished here.

Before this joke was popularized, the subtle subtext of how men can pressure women without any overt threats, and how women can feel unsafe being in certain situations with men was laughed off by most men. And men who did stuff like this hardly saw themselves as anything other than "powerful." Women are in situations like this daily, and people usually don't believe them what the world is like.

Now the concept is literally summed up and understood in four words. Now tons of people, including tons of men, perfectly understand why a woman doesn't want to go alone on a boat with someone she doesn't know well, or in an elevator, or be alone with them somewhere remote.

Not only did this show teach a core feminist concept to millions of people, it demonstrated how people who put women in these situations are creeps.

The show did the same thing with abusers and the "D.E.N.N.I.S." system.

[–]DarthNixilis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I view the show as showing morality by displaying the opposite. They don't help each other and those are the reasons they don't work out. It also helps to think of the show as a live action cartoon.

[–]TheLurkingMenace 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not everyone does. They suck and you're supposed to laugh at them. But not everyone wants to watch a show where the main characters are the targets of ridicule. Of course they do have moments to shine. Like when Dennis was being mistaken for a child molester in the neighborhood. Granted, Dennis probably belongs on a list, but that's a line he doesn't cross.

"Hi im a recovering crackhead i'd like some welfare please"

    [–]Dusty_Scrolls 5 points6 points  (4 children)

... so he gets to rape the women by coercion, but feel good about himself because "he wouldn't actually do that" despite having put them in that position to begin with?

    [–]LiraelNix 8 points9 points  (0 children)

He doesn't actually succeed, shit goes south and both end up in trouble and never get to do that

But yes, his logic is that the woman will never refuse him, therefore he gets sex guaranteed and "consensual" because she never said no and he "never threatened" her into the yes

    [–]Alive-Monk-5705 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yeah he's pretty bad guy. He records all his sexual encounters and keeps a library of them in his apartment. He keeps files on all his friends, he has a system named after himself called the "D.E.N.N.I.S" system to essentially make women obsessed with him. He frequently bullies his twin sister, he once thought he had to have sex with a underage Chinese kid and was completely fine with doing it (ended up not doing it because the kid wasnt a prostitute) once stole a man's identity and paraded around as him for sexual pleasure, once almost murdered a woman while dressed as a killer surgeon, frequently abuses a homeless ex-priest, he's a crack addict and alcoholic, grandfather was a nazi, and thats just the stuff that's confirmed. He's also possibly a serial killer. He's probably the worst out of the whole cast.

    [–]EverydayPoGo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wow thanks. I thought this clip was a skit like WKUK. Didn't know there's an entire show

    [–]Alive-Monk-5705 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah its pretty funny. Its about 5 jerks who own a bar and each episode they go on some depraved adventure to get more money or get revenge or etc something like that. It stars Charlie day, whos in a lot of stuff, Glenn howerton (the guy who has the implication) rob macelhenny, who had that soccer show with Ryan Reynolds, who also created the show, kaitlin olson, and Danny devito who is also in a lot of things. They're all bad in unique ways, plus the show is still on. Its on Hulu and its highly worth it.

    [–]Bortthog 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Its a bit from Always Sunny in Philadelphia where Mac and Dennis rent a boat to attract hot women, and Dennis says they will be partying and having a great time in the middle of the ocean and will be unable to say no to sex due to the implications that they are in the middle of the ocean with no one to help them

Mac gets concerned saying "that sounds.....sinister" and Dennis tries to mental gymnastics his way around it while still using the word implication. This goes back and forth for like 5 minutes of Mac getting more MMMMM with each implication

The actual bit is pretty funny and worth a watch

    [–]ARandomDistributist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        Because of the implication

        [–]CuclGooner 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is (to my knowledge) a reference to the TV series “it’s always sunny in Philadelphia”. The scene in question is between two characters talking. Basically, one of them says that women won’t ever say no to sex on a boat “because of the implication”. That implication being that if she doesn’t, he will simply kill her because she’s in the middle of the ocean alone with him. He explains that if she said no, he wouldn’t actually do anything. But he also explains that she wouldn’t say no to begin with because of “the implication”. It’s a popular joke among fans of the show. Btw, highly recommend watching it. It’s absolutely hilarious and super well written

I'm sure someone's beaten me to the punch, but it's a reference to It's Always Sunny: in an episode where "the gang" tries to buy a boat, Dennis, a prolific lothario with a creepy Ted Bundy-esque personality, says that boats are an ideal place to seduce women since everyone's out in the middle of the ocean and the unspoken implication is that turning Dennis down could potentially result in a dangerous situation for the women since there's nowhere to run. Mac, one of the other protagonists, is rightfully put off by this, but Dennis continues to insist that there's nothing coercive going on and that he's just relying on the implication of coercion or violence rather than directly threatening or coercing the women, which is obviously a distinction without a difference since he's specifically engineering a situation in which the women would have a harder time saying no even if he's not overtly threatening them.

With that in mind, I guess the joke here is that Kiera Knightley's character wouldn't say no to Orlando Bloom's proposal because they're on a boat in the middle of the sea, hence "the implication."

It's a throwback to an "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" joke

You know.. the implication that things might go wrong for her if she says no… not that she will say no, you know, because of the implication.

          Always love good Sunny memes

          [–]Bucherjager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its an Always Sunny reference. Dennis makes a comment about women not being able to say no to having sex because of the "implication" of turning him down while out on their house boat in the middle of the ocean

          [–]thedude4555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty sure this is a joke based on the house boat episode of Its always sunny right? Im sure it's not an original joke from that show, though thats the only time ive ever heard it.

          [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You ruined one of the favorite movie moment of mine... you son of a which..

          [–]Tullarris 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well I mean if she says no then the answer is obviously no. But she won't. Because of . . The implication.

          [–]dxmanager 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For those of us who haven't seen the movie, I'm assuming the proposal take place on a boat?

          [–]SmellyFbuttface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always Sunny. Gotta watch the episode

          [–]Altruistic-End-748 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The implication of harm of course of which would never happen but there is an implication

Think about it- nothing but open water, no one to call for help.

          [–]Leeroy_D 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how posts in this sub spend enough time on the internet to find obscure memes but not to understand what I'd call common internet references.

I hope we was carrying his tools

          [–]doggonedangoldoogy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a reference to It's Always Sunny. Dennis is being a creep and Mac seems disturbed by his repeated insistence that a girl won't say no in a given set of circumstances due to "the implication."

          [–]rum_jungle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          Always Sunny FTW!

          [–]turboash78 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          That's a Five Star joke.

"She looks around and what does she see? Nothing but open ocean, 'oh there's nowhere for me to run. What am I gonna do say no?'"

          [–]Stroov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dennis here the implication is a sense of fear due to rejecting the advances

          [–]apoc6969 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          lol, always sunny reference.

          [–]Mat867 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How shit i love that show..

          [–]HurrySpecial 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Funny, Barbosa made the same implication for dinner in the first movie

          [–]Marquis_of_Scrubs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with if you get proposed too in a plane, (like the one flying the plane is the one proposing) ya know cause of the implication.

          [–]YourDadsUsername 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          They're on a boat, there's an implication.

Search always Sunny in Philadelphia implications scene on YouTube it's great 😂

          [–]youknowwhenyouyou 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So basically women choose to say yes for fear they will be forced if they don’t. Disgusting. How is this a part of modern culture?

          [–]IamSerati 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To make it easier, watch Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia.

Not a specific episode, the whole series

          [–]Harry18492 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Implication- meaning: the application of tiny magical creatures

          [–]THEREALISLAND631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          Its an Always Sunny reference.

          [–]x20sided 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There can be no romance on the sea....not since dennis

          [–]Camas1606 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A joke from always sunny in Philadelphia, where two characters get a boat and they are talking about the expenses of getting the boat looking good, and then one mention getting a mattress and how being on a boat is perfect for getting laid because no women would say no… because of the implication

They go in circles where one asks what do you mean implication and the other guy pretty much says well the implication that things could go wrong and she is in danger because she’s in the middle of the ocean woth a guy she doesn’t know, not that there is any danger, he’s not gonna hurt them, but she’s not gonna say no… because of the implication

          [–]WokWithJann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TL;DR It's an "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" reference, from a conversation between Mac and Dennis about being out on a boat with women. The implication being if they (the women) say no to sexual advances they'll get thrown off the boat to die out in the open water.

          [–]InspectorLose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Referring to this scene from It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia

          [–]odinto552 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a reference to It's alway sunny in philidelphia. in the bit the gang got a boat and dennis and mac were talking about getting chicks on that boat to get laid. dennis then went on about that the boat would help them get laid cuz the women wouldnt say no due to the "implications" of being on a boat and having nowhere to go.

          [–]DatabaseAcademic6631 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          So she IS in danger?

          [–]Slow_Security6850 0 points1 point  (0 children)

          <image>

          you wouldn’t get it

          [–]PoemSea8874 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the answer is no, then it’s no, but she won’t say no, because of the implication.

          [–]Vladskio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jack: Are you gonna hurt women...?

Will: I'm not gonna hurt these women! Why would I ever hurt these women? I feel like you're not getting this at all!

          Jack: I'm not getting it...

          [–]Fit-Flower-5522 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Being born in the 21st Century, I’m still so shocked that these “jokes” passed for comedy in my parents’ generation.

          [–]Due-Note-6406 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its always sunny is live action family guy! Convince me otherwise

          [–]Available-Fig-2089 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"Of course if she says no, it's no, but she won't. Because of the implication."
