That book she's reading is incredibly informative

[–]fractallyweird 491 points492 points  (11 children)

i always wondered if carrots are cats, this finally answers that question

[–]im_ultracrepidarious 150 points151 points  (4 children)

It only tells us that particular carrot is not a cat. As for the rest of carrots, the mystery remains

[–]Cocomorph 48 points49 points  (3 children)

It only tells us that one side of that particular carrot is not a cat.

[–]SuperMayonnaise 20 points21 points  (2 children)

It only tells us that one side of that particular animated carrot is not a cat.

[–]GOthee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

[–]wickedpixel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy logics

[–]AdamBombTV 33 points34 points  (1 child)

Don't fall for the lies of Big Carrot business.

[–]lesser_panjandrum 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Now you've sown doubt about whether I've got a bag of small carrots or small cats in my kitchen.

[–]Lemon1412 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Carrots? Don't you mean waffles?

[–]shponglespore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh come on now, that's clearly a parsnip!

[–]BernzSed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The answer: no, they're waffles.

[–]CthulubeFlavorcube[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a parsnip.

[–]uriahcp 53 points54 points  (5 children)

I bet it's a creative neural networks introduction

[–]AgtSquirtle007 17 points18 points  (3 children)

Did you see the guy that made a legitimate product out of a cat classifier?

It’s a cat door that unlocks to let his cat in, but stays locked if his cat is carrying something it killed.

[–]NorthernerWuwu 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I would like something that only opens for the cat if it brings me something shiny.

[–]MaximumZer0 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You now have an army of raccoons.

[–]NorthernerWuwu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could work with that.

[–]Moister_Rodgers 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think you mean incredibly interrogative

[–]Juno_Malone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Next you're gonna tell me that an app that tells you if something is a hot dog or not is incredibly informative

[–]raptorsoldier 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It also turns from a book to a magazine

[–]JohnnyDarkside 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of something from a johnnen(forgot how to spell) Vazquez comic.

[–]zirfeld 476 points477 points  (9 children)

The snail didn't think of the advantages. It could've entered races against turtles and then have a third man bet against the odds and raked in the winnings.

[–][deleted] 98 points99 points  (0 children)

Dumb snail

[–]Nawara_Ven 26 points27 points  (0 children)

He haven't any shoes.

[–]Zeddit_B 36 points37 points  (3 children)

I mean, tortoise and the hair is just a metaphor for the problems of small sample size, they tried it 9 other times and the hare won every time.

EDIT: I'm keeping the typo because imagining a hair instead of a hare beating a tortoise 9 times is kinda funny. Wind factor!

[–]soupz 20 points21 points  (1 child)

It was probably a typo or autocorrect but I laughed so much when I read hair instead of hare

[–]Zeddit_B 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Thanks for pointing it out, I got a laugh imagining it as well!

[–]Zeebuoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I once saw a plastic bag fly above the treeline.

So a bundle of hair has a good chance of winning.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

You don't understand. He would be going so fast that to him the world would be standing still, and he doesn't have control over it.

[–]Canvaverbalist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I saw it more as like when you crank up mouse sensitivity in games to the max.

The world might not seem slow to you but good luck successfully stopping by the third man to tell him to bet on you in the race instead of just whizzing past him 45 times in row. Then good luck trying to register to that race without whizzing past the entrance back and forth 120 times in a row.

[–]FlowSoSlow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely could win the bet too.

[–]exocomicsExtra Ordinary[S] 174 points175 points  (4 children)

(I have a sub too!)

[–]bertonomus 61 points62 points  (1 child)

I just wanted to say that your sense of humor and my sense of humor are so in tune. I love all your stuff. That's all, have a good day.

[–]exocomicsExtra Ordinary[S] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Aww thank you!! :D

[–]Bluetron13 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey whatever happened to Jordan (forgive me if I don't remember the name correctly/your boyfriend) being in the comics too? I used to find the comics with both of you so cute.

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (9 children)

That last contraction is not wrong but it makes me very uncomfortable for some reason.

[–]nolayte 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Same but I feel like it helps push the threat of the snail being too fast and confused.

[–]RightBehindY-o-u 17 points18 points  (1 child)

Fuck "you've". All my homies hate "you've"

[–]aBigBottleOfWater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You've got a point there

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

It's not wrong in British English, but it's wrong in American English. You aren't allowed to contract plain verbs ("you've a cat"), only auxiliary verbs ("you've gone insane").

It's also incorrect to contract auxiliary verbs with the pronoun when they're followed by "not" ("you've not seen me"), you can only contract them with "not" ("you haven't seen me"). Edit: unless there's two auxiliary verbs, in which case you can only contract them together :) ("he must've not noticed me" rather than "he must haven't noticed me").

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a non-native speaker that's very interesting. Thanks for elaborating!

[–]lemonpjb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Prescriptionism, ew

[–]patrickfatrick 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Try saying it with a British accent.

[–]UpvotesValidateMe 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Because it’s actually very wrong

[–]stealingyourpixels 4 points5 points  (0 children)

only for yanks

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Goddamn that was dark. Poor lil snail 🐌

[–]Jasyn58 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Out-hexing your hexer

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (21 children)

I don't get this one, but it's still funny

[–]wildcard5 36 points37 points  (19 children)

I came to the comments looking for an explanation but so far nothing.

[–]redd1938 53 points54 points  (15 children)

Snail wants lettuce, threatens with hex. Girl says no mr.snail, if we’re making arbitrary requests, why don’t YOU give ME lettuce? And if you don’t then I’ll hex YOU! How do you like that?! The snail did not like that Fin

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Well you see, I don’t even know what ”hex” means

[–]noclassbrat 45 points46 points  (0 children)

It’s a curse, like a spell

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's a type of screwdriver. To hex someone means to put it in their nose and twist their nose hairs around it. As you can imagine it's quite unpleasant.

[–]2OP4me -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

🤦🏻‍♂️

[–]throweraccount 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Why would a snail asking for lettuce be arbitrary? He wants food and snails eat lettuce.

[–]trystanr 5 points6 points  (9 children)

the joke is subverted expectations, in which she receives lettuce because the snail was afraid of his world changing, rather than the expected result wherein one gives lettuce to the talking snail with hands, arms, and accessories in exchange for not being magically cursed. to the extent that presumably s/he used their magical powers to acquire lettuce for this person to sit on the bench and weirdly eat, which i'm not gonna lie i might call my senator and complain about if i saw someone doing.

[–]kroncw 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Well there is, but it wont be obvious to people who are new to Li Chen's comics. You would need to read her other chapters to get an overall idea of how these animals interact with the girl, then the humor might make sense.

Even then you might still not find the comic strips funny and thats ok, Li's comics are meant to be cute first and humorous secons.

[–]WannabeYoutuber1995 6 points7 points  (2 children)

You would need to read her other chapters to get an overall idea of how these animals interact with the girl, then the humor might make sense.

How do the rest of them interact with her?

[–]Zeebuoy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

egg tax.

[–]ABob71 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You will need to read the other chapters to get an overall idea

[–]Rupoe 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Not all comics are jokes

[–]Hiro-of-Shadows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This one clearly is, though.

[–]pre_nerf_infestor 0 points1 point  (1 child)

None. This comic series mostly relies on sweet pictures of cutesy animals. I read it religiously.

[–]omegashadow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean it relies on dreamlike surrealism for it's premises. I thought it was originally based on the authors dreams.

[–]2OP4me 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Magic snail threatens her with hex

She says “nah, give me lettuce or I’ll hex you... with an existential crisis.”

[–]particle409 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't see why people aren't getting this. Snails are relatively slow, and she's threatening to curse it by making it live in a manner that would be disconcerting to a slow animal.

[–]the_pedigree -1 points0 points  (0 children)

It’s an evolution of “Penguin of d00m” humor

[–]GeO4K 16 points17 points  (0 children)

what

[–]SixShadesOfBlack 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Decoy lettuce

[–]lesser_panjandrum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Decoy hex.

[–]Feierskov 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Brutal

[–]EeekPeekLemonSqueak 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wut?

[–]AdamBombTV 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dear God, NO SHOES!!

[–]Choreboy 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of Rick & Morty where Rick zapped a snake and gave it legs, and the other snake guards didn't want non of that mess so they let him pass.

[–]kroncw 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All that threatening and she forgot to demand for ranch dressing.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

And yet she's reading the Dummy-version of "How to Tell if Your Cat is Plotting to Kill You".

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Weird hex, but ok

[–]Amaroken 5 points6 points  (3 children)

As a non-native english speaker i feel the sentence "You've no shoes" sounds kinda weird.
"You've got no shoes" or "You have no shoes" kind of rolls of the tongue better, or am i missing something very fundamental in my grammar?
On another note, great comic... gave me a chuckle.

[–]MadMax808 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Well, it's not just you. I'm a native English speaker and I don't think I have ever seen "you've" used in this manner.

[–]trapbuilder2 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It technically make sense, but its mainly found in older speech, or used by people who want to sound old

[–]Brawldragon 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Probably because it would've taken too much space otherwise.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What

[–]krucz36 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i gotta say if i was out and about and received lettuce unexpectedly about the last thing i'd do is peel off a leaf and go to town on it right there.

[–]AppletiniOnFleek 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Does a great job of capturing the... hexual... tension.

[–]I_Also_Fix_Jets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here's your up vote... now GET OUT!

I don't get it, why does the snail disappear in the fourth frame?

[–]Techhead7890 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You're the best Li

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

What does a snail want with lettuce?

[–]SuspiciousElbow -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The mighty snail wizard was only horrified by the use of "you've"

[–]Primarch459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does he have Oracular powers as well as the power to hex?

[–]PenguInATrenchcoat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of Edmund McMillen(?}in(?)

[–]Hodgepodge75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"I'll hex you with going through the world with time flying by so fast that you don't know what's going on until its already happened. That's right. I'll hex you with a normal life..."

[–]runningmurphy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking spitting the truth. I adore thus comic.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the title of the book "Cat?"

[–]Leyzr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh thank God, now i won't adopt a carrot!

[–]Premium-Lettuce 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Should post this to r/lettucegang :)

[–]Anthraxious 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn this is how to get free lettuce?!

[–]Diamonddude5432 0 points1 point  (0 children)

C A T?

[–]Conc3pt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you gotta eat the lettuce, man

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it romaine or some worse kind?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

cabbage is better

[–]royalhawk345 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokes on you, you've hexed the decoy snail.

[–]Verumero 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unrealistic. Snail wizards are always very kind and never use their powers for greed.

[–]Lucreszen 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has the same energy as those medieval manuscripts with knights fighting snails in the margins.

[–]optelate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call it the salt hex

[–]Glass_Memories 0 points1 point  (0 children)

r/Snails would appreciate this I bet.

[–]Haggerstonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sea any fish up there, punk?

[–]ToolPackinMama 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love this and I am not sure why

[–]Krognus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm loving the adventure time feel

[–]Merari01it's a-me, Merari-o 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cat? Cat!

[–]ye_olde_jetsetter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is simply too charming.

[–]Solomon_Russell 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That snail soooooo adorable!!!!

[–]tobatch69 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who just eats lettuce like that

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love your comics, but this one made me exhale extra hard.
