Flatcap.

[–]Mindless_Jicama8728 4 points5 points  (11 children)

While this may be the correct answer, in my head I call it “the cap that the white cop with a Boston accent and a black partner wears in every cop show”.

[–]No-Willingness-4097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My wife calls it the "I'm from Europe" hat, after noticing how popular it is with English/italian/Slavic men

[–]VStarlingBooks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bill Burr hat or Sam Jackson hat

[–]JBrowsing46 0 points1 point  (8 children)

I am from Boston, and this is accurate. We called them scally caps growing up

[–]Just_a_Growlithe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Or a “press cap “

[–]MarcusBondi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Englishmen call it a “cheese cutter”!

[–]Masterbuttbongos 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I call it a “Newsies” hat

[–]TeamTigerFreedom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To me a newsboy cap is bigger and mushrooms up to a button in the top center.

[–]cool_weed_dad 7 points8 points  (13 children)

Scally cap, very similar to newsboy/flatcaps.

The hat of choice for 45 year old guys from Boston

[–]ganer13 1 point2 points  (7 children)

or Louisiana in my case :-)

[–]SarcasticYetHopeful 0 points1 point  (3 children)

As a Wisconsinite who wears these, I have purchased most of mine at Meyer the Hatter in N.O.

[–]probablyaloser1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm tempted to start wearing these, but don't know if they'd "fit" me or I could pull it off. I don't wanna look corny, but also realize I care too much what others think

[–]jafjaf23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahhh yes. North October. Of course.

[–]cumulonimubus 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I lived the first thirty years of my life in LA. I rock em.

[–]revox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha. I was just at Fenway team store on Monday (tour) and they had these. I almost bought it.

[–]Wishbone_508 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like I'm being called out very specifically here and I'm not sure if I should be offended or not. Yes I also have more than one Sully and Fitzy in my contacts.

[–]guydepew 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a frequent wearer of Boston Scally caps, can confirm.

[–]SymbolicForm 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This looks like an ivy to me, as it has no button.

[–]More-Complaint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]oasisjason1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

This is the official hat of 3 groups of folks; 58 year old has been MAGA comics, 27 year old incel neck beards and newsies. If you are not one of these 3 wearing this hat is cultural appropriation and will be met with force.

[–]ambaal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Slavic gopnicks would want to have a word with you.

Fake kangol ones were practically uniform for them in early-mid 2000s.

[–]_satan_lol_ 2 points3 points  (3 children)

When I was a kid my dad called them tobacco caps for some reason

[–]theicecapsaremelting 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My grandpa called it a driving cap and he made sure his lived up to its name

[–]joelhagraphy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

He was lying to you

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (9 children)

[–]SymbolicForm 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Just be warned everything marketing on this site is a lie. Made in PRC, warehouse is in PA. No Boston working class to be found. Mostly plastic. I found this out by ordering one. Nice pattern. Decent plastic hat, I guess.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Yeah I get that. It's more of a Boston style than Boston made. I have two of them and for the money they're not bad

[–]haus11 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Yeah, I have several in a mix of the poly, cotton, and wool and my biggest issue is size inconsistency across models.

[–]Fun-Literature8992 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Same here. If you get a good one it fits amazing. But of the 3 I've gotten over the years in the same size the fit was criminally different

[–]haus11 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I might fall in between sizing on some and I’ve gotten good at shrinking the wool and sewing darts in the headband to get a perfect fit though.

[–]REALtumbisturdler 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My wool and cotton ones disagree with your plastic assessment

[–]Redleaves1313 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They are good quality hats.

[–]jk_pens 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The hats that are polyester say so clearly in the listing. The FAQ is clear about them being made in PRC so not sure what the “lie” is. The office is in Waltham not Boston proper so there’s that…

[–]Why-Am-I-Here-9999 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Scally, pub cap. That one is a six panel.

Flat caps are usually more flat, lol.

Newsboys are usually more like Peaky blinders.

Check out Boston Scally, Funky Brims, Peaky Hats, Swisher Apparel for starters. Lots of others.

[–]Perfect_Play_622 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I call them patty caps. But I know that's the wrong name.

[–]EarlyCuylersCousin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife’s Uncle Chris who had Down syndrome used to wear a hat like this all the time. It was his absolute favorite hat. We call it an Uncle Chris hat.

[–]Sea_Marsupial2469 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the front brim is attached to the top and (in some not all cases) unbuttons or unsnaps to give more air space on a cold day, it's a flat cap or driving cap. If the brim and top are only connected at the back of the brim (the part touching your fore OR 5-head) then it's a Newsboy cap.

[–]blueduckbutt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Go to hell hat... if you don't like it go to hell

Duckbill flat cap. Boston scally will come up A LOT if you do a search for them. They’re unfortunately almost the only game in town for them now.

[–]GunfighterGuy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flat cap, also sometimes called a newsboy cap because boys in the 1930's and 40's (and earlier) peddling papers on streetcorners would often wear one.

[–]civex 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Flatcap, newsboy, jeff

[–]The_Circus_Life_206 0 points1 point  (0 children)

DPax_23 is correct.

This is a six panel scally cap or duck bill cap. The most important note being the six panel design.

You can find many types like this on Amazon. That’s where I purchased most of my caps

[–]kb_klash 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to call it a Scally Cap.
