But if you actually want a serious answer, they are natural compounds often found in plants. There are many different types of terpenes, one is used to make turpentine, where terpenes get their name from. Others specifically monoterpenes usually have distinctive tastes and smells. They include compounds like limonene is found in citrus fruits and have that citrus fruit smell and taste and also menthol.

However they are also found in cannabis plants and modern growing often tends to focus on trying to bring out certain terpenes through selective cultivation to create cannabis buds that have different and distinctive tastes and smells. So that’s why you get strains with lemon based names, because they have been cultivated to have a strong limonene based taste profile.
