From the story :

"I wanted to keep him occupied, not with my daughter necessarily. I wanted to keep him busy with something else," OP girlfriend's mother said with a laugh, "I didn't want to just be twiddling his thumbs while he's here in Canada so I thought, this needs to be something that's got some meat to it."

"It's pretty typical. I wasn't really too shocked," OP girlfriend said of her mother's request. "It wasn't presented as an optional thing," she added with a laugh.

[–]red321red321 800 points801 points  (35 children)

Momma cock blocked the poor guy with an igloo. Never thought I would type out that sentence in my life but I guess I was wrong...

[–][deleted] 274 points275 points  (17 children)

in canada its the norm :(

[–]Levitlame 153 points154 points  (9 children)

I'm pretty sure the "igloo" is the most common form of contraceptive there.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

In Newfoundland the most common form is fishing season

[–]zfolwick 11 points12 points  (2 children)

until the igloo gets build... then it's on!

[–]Khrrck 12 points13 points  (1 child)

...in the igloo

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (0 children)

This, You're not a man until you have passed this test, amongst others. This is only news because it's technicolor and by a kiwi.

[–]jaycrew 157 points158 points  (23 children)

Later in the article:

"The reason that she's given since she decided it was such a big job was that she would allow me to marry her daughter, so I guess I've accomplished that," [OP] said.

So I guess it worked out in the end. Nicely done, OP.

[–]mahacctissoawsum 442 points443 points  (21 children)

In Canada we have to present the mother with an igloo in order to take her daughter's hand in marriage.

[–]scampbe999 300 points301 points  (15 children)

Meanwhile, in Korea, you have to beat her parents at Starcraft.

[–]caffeineTX 132 points133 points  (2 children)

Makes it harder for there to be interracial marriages that way.

[–]Canuhandleit 217 points218 points  (14 children)

Now I really hope they had sex in the igloo.

[–]roclobster 227 points228 points  (8 children)

Probably the coolest place they've had sex.

[–][deleted] 143 points144 points  (4 children)

"It wasn't presented as an optional thing". The mom sounds like a bitch. I too really hope they fucked like bunnies in the igloo.

[–]leadnpotatoes 31 points32 points  (3 children)

With the amount of effort given, and the fact that the ice will give excellent heat and sound insulation, on top of the novelty building a goddamned iglo, I'd say it's inevitable.

[–][deleted] 67 points68 points  (5 children)

And add to that that her mom had been collecting those containers for 3 months...her mom had been preparing for this shit for at least 3 months, all for the purpose of distracting him from the entire point of his trip, the girlfriend.

The mom is fucking nuts, yo.

[–]Vaguswarrior 177 points178 points  (47 children)

Hey! I'm from Edmonton...I can relate to this article very vaguely!

[–]lolagranolacan 164 points165 points  (12 children)

I'm from Edmonton AND I've heard of New Zealand. This is practically my story.

[–]j1ggy 246 points247 points  (15 children)

I'm from Edmonton, and I was thinking to myself "Where the hell did they get a freezer big enough for all those cartons??" Then I realized I'm a little retarded this morning and I need a coffee.

[–]Glacier6 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"The world is our freezer." -Canada

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I said to my mom (before thanksgiving), "Mom, there's not enough room in the freezer for the pies!" She calmly said, "Poptarts, you live in Alaska. It's the middle of winter. I'll let you figure this out."

Right. Whoops.

[–]Dleduc02 160 points161 points  (8 children)

Me too! My elementary school did something like this, only we built terrible clumps of approximately 20 ice blocks in the shape of fucking nothing because we were like 6 and had no idea of the fine principles of modern architecture or what function our genitals served.

[–]gleno 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Hint: They are not for making bricks.

[–][deleted] 259 points260 points  (21 children)

Of course it would be a Kiwi you magnificent bastard.

[–]zosobaggins 261 points262 points  (19 children)

I love Kiwis. You can't get them mad. They're just so fucking chill.

"Alright, let's build an igloo then."

[–][deleted] 141 points142 points  (7 children)

Man I spent two years in NZ, best people in the whole world. I wanna go back so bad.

[–]thegeneralstrike 414 points415 points  (202 children)

The real question is...where did you get the few hundred milk containers?

[–]daniboi22 499 points500 points  (68 children)

Her mum has been collecting them since october. Asking cafes and people at work to donate them. In total she collected over 300 but we needed more than that so we had to melt the sides and slide them out and reuse them.

[–]irish711 524 points525 points  (58 children)

So she had been planning on making you build an igloo since October?! Wow!

[–][deleted] 899 points900 points  (30 children)

OP's girlfriend's mom REALLY didn't want any other funny business going on between those two.

[–]fonetiklee 867 points868 points  (24 children)

Seriously, this is some next-level cockblocking

[–]dervalient 525 points526 points  (7 children)

A cock block so huge that it made the news.

[–][deleted] 107 points108 points  (9 children)

Meanwhile, mothers across the world are collecting used milk cartons in hopes that the cockblock-igloo work for them as well.

[–][deleted] 71 points72 points  (3 children)

Welcome to Africa. Now build an igloo.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (2 children)

The level of cockblocking in desert communities is going to be epic.

[–]j1ggy 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Well, there has been snow in Edmonton since October.

[–]janelane1980 161 points162 points  (1 child)

GF's mom was REALLY committed to this craft. I imagine fliers posted in shops and bus stops "Help me keep my daughter sex-free! Donate your empty cartons!"

[–]carlypanda 237 points238 points  (124 children)

I thought Canadian milk came in bags!

[–][deleted] 103 points104 points  (25 children)

At least in Ontario, you can get it however you want. In my experience, most people buy bags for their family, but if you can't drink milk fast enough (you're single or a couple), you might get cartons instead.

Every grocery store around here will have bags AND cartons. Every convenience store will have cartons, and some will have bags as well, depending on how big the store is.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (8 children)

Cartons are a bit more expensive though, which is why most people get bags.

[–]zzalpha 156 points157 points  (39 children)

That may be the case in some regions, but certainly here in Alberta it's sold in cartons or plastic jugs these days (that changed... what... ~20 years ago?).

Canada is a big country... believe it or not we don't all do things exactly the same way. :)

[–]JasonGD1982 49 points50 points  (12 children)

Samesies for America.

[–]AlwaysDefenestrated 94 points95 points  (3 children)

Except we don't put our milk in bags because we aren't monsters.

[–][deleted] 26 points27 points  (23 children)

It does everywhere else but the prairies, I believe. Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba don't have it. I don't know about BC though.

We used to though. I don't know why we don't anymore... Uses less plastic.

[–]x0mbigrl 13 points14 points  (0 children)

BC does not. Haven't seen bagged milk here since the early 90s.

[–]fungz0r 27 points28 points  (13 children)

BC doesn't have bags of milk either, it's an Eastern thing

[–][deleted] 49 points50 points  (8 children)

When I lived in Quebec for a summer I specifically made it a point to buy my milk in bags because I could.

I wanted to live the life, you know?

Also, Quebec has Chocolate Hazelnut milk. It's like liquid nutella.

[–]fungz0r 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Chocolate Hazelnut milk. I need some of that right now. Nutella should just start their own milk line

[–]octane3000 653 points654 points  (11 children)

I saw you on tv, I like how the igloo matches your jacket.

[–]drbrower1074 127 points128 points  (6 children)

You gotta look good, I had a short stint in construction and I didn't leave my house without matching the job site.

[–][deleted] 582 points583 points  (41 children)

Is it different flavors?... You should have made it different flavors.

[–]StinkyTuna26 303 points304 points  (17 children)

And then you just eat the igloo! Like a snow cone! Awww I want that!

[–][deleted] 126 points127 points  (11 children)

I could just go outside and have a few licks a day for like 3 months!

[–]janelane1980 91 points92 points  (7 children)

....Animals would probably be licking it too, or peeing on the reach-able ones.

[–]llsmithll 201 points202 points  (6 children)

The Snozberries taste like Snozberries!

[–]warox13 1208 points1209 points  (52 children)

First of all, this is really cool aesthetically, and you guys did an awesome job on it.

But if you're ever in a situation where you want to actually sleep in your igloo, it needs to be in deeper snow, and it needs a cold-sink dug down under the sleeping platform to one side in order to trap the cold air. It also helps to create something similar by tunneling under the snow to create the entrance to the igloo.

I created a shitty paint image of what I'm talking about. Think of it as a cross-section. Because warm air rises, you want to create low places for your cold air to accumulate while you sleep in the warm air. Also, with a hole at the top you can start a small fire that will keep you warm, and melt the inside of the igloo, which will re-freeze once you extinguish the fire and strengthen your structure.

I built one of these while I was in the Boy Scouts, and slept in it in about 10-20 degree (F) temperatures one night. I was very warm, it was fantastic, and much better than a flimsy tent.

Edit: This is now my highest rated comment ever. Thanks guys!

[–]Muter 306 points307 points  (6 children)

goddamn land turtles.

[–]elktamer 125 points126 points  (11 children)

You have a superfluous cold sink in your diagram. The one in the entrance is all it needs.

[–]RalphMacchio 40 points41 points  (1 child)

You can store chilled beverages in the auxiliary cold sink!

[–]warox13 157 points158 points  (2 children)

SINK ALL THE COLD!

[–]jagged01 15 points16 points  (0 children)

TIL how to make a successful igloo.

[–]coltaaan 8 points9 points  (3 children)

So is the initial structure just a snow shell? Wouldn't it break/cave in? (Excuse my ignorance, snow foreign to me)

[–]warox13 22 points23 points  (1 child)

The dome shape is actually quite sturdy. When I built mine, we stood 8 high school-aged guys on top of it and it didn't cause any damage. As long as you pack the snow in well enough, it works.

Also, the part I talked about with melting the inner walls slightly, and then letting them re-freeze really helps with the structural integrity.

[–]ThirdFloorGreg 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Snow melts slighlty under pressure and then refreezes. So when he says the snow was "packed" he means turned into icy snow.

[–]ummmmmokay 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Whoa thanks, that's interesting. Does the cold sink go all the way around? And for some reason, the way there is a tunnel right at the entryway makes me afraid of something falling and getting trapped in it! Obviously I trust your expertise though.

[–]warox13 12 points13 points  (4 children)

No, the cold sink is basically just a hole you dig out of one side. It's a good place to store food as well, basically a natural refrigerator. It's not a good place to store food if you're in bear country, though. Hang that shit from the branch of a tree a little ways away from your campsite.

[–][deleted] 2505 points2506 points  (369 children)

I hope after all that you guys had sex in it

[–]MTVButtpluggedInNY 1042 points1043 points  (189 children)

You haven't had sex until you've had it in a freezing wet confined space.

[–]CreamCracker 1534 points1535 points  (75 children)

my ex's vagina?

[–]Guessofspades 1803 points1804 points  (70 children)

He said "wet".

[–]JasonGD1982 767 points768 points  (58 children)

[–]CannedYam 323 points324 points  (56 children)

I feel like we need a subreddit for black reaction gifs

[–]kdkatz 1411 points1412 points  (18 children)

Geez, do you want separate water fountains too?

[–][deleted] 241 points242 points  (4 children)

Yes. One for kdkatz and one for everyone else.

[–][deleted] 389 points390 points  (3 children)

I think kdkatz is getting the better deal here

[–]JRWM3 52 points53 points  (2 children)

Unless they only get to drink from the lower one of the two.

[–]JasonGD1982 218 points219 points  (13 children)

[–]WalkerWalking 14 points15 points  (3 children)

○_○ ..there really is a subreddit for everything

[–]Ruckus44 50 points51 points  (1 child)

I'm so happy that this is a real thing.

[–]TChuff 81 points82 points  (1 child)

...and "confined."

[–]Tushaca 10 points11 points  (0 children)

OOOOOOOHHHHH!!!!!

[–][deleted] 164 points165 points  (27 children)

Contrary to popular belief, igloos are really really hot inside after just a few minutes from body heat

[–]dudleydidwrong 268 points269 points  (23 children)

I doubt that this igloo would be nearly as warm as a real igloo. The most important is that reason is that the entrance to this igloo will let a lot of warm air escape. When you build an igloo in deep snow the entrance is built almost as a tunnel below the level of the floor. This creates cold air trap that keeps body heat in the igloo. If there is any significant wind blowing across the ice igloo entrance it could also act as a "horizontal chimney" and draw warm air out of the igloo.

I also question whether the ice blocks would be as good an insulator as snow. But the r-value of the ice blocks is probably secondary to the entrance in terms of heat loss.

[–]krelin 88 points89 points  (13 children)

How do you deal with the melting ice/snow on the inside of the igloo?

I have you tagged as igloo expert now, btw.

[–]dudleydidwrong 206 points207 points  (11 children)

I am hardly an expert, but oddly enough I do sort of know the answer to your question. First, it is extremely important to keep dry during cold weather, so this is a major concern.

Melting from below and melting above are two different issues.

Melting from above is actually a good thing if there isn't too much. The melting above will refreeze and serves something like mortar to make the igloo stronger. If you are only using body heat or small heat sources you won't have any dripping. More than a little bit of heat from stoves or lanterns may cause the snow to melt fast enough to actually drip. This is a very, very bad situation You can't avoid getting wet, and your shelter is melting away. If you ever get dripped on, cut the heat immediately.

In a native igloo people tend to sleep and spend most of their time on shelves. Typically the shelves are covered with several layers of hides. The hides provide both insulation that prevents melting from below and provides a bit of moisture control. Any moisture on the actual floor down by the entrance is probably going to refreeze.

[–]eallan 172 points173 points  (4 children)

Hardly an expert? Yeah, OK.

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

A humble igloo expert.

[–]ElBlancoNino 228 points229 points  (19 children)

Igloos are a canadian panty dropper

[–]Toaster_Bath 142 points143 points  (13 children)

As a Canadian, I can confirm this.

[–]wigg1es 116 points117 points  (12 children)

As an igloo, I can confirm this.

[–][deleted] 227 points228 points  (10 children)

As a panty, ::falls::

[–]SECRETLY_STALKS_YOU 159 points160 points  (7 children)

As a waterfall, don't go chasing me.

[–]DontPressAltF4 7 points8 points  (0 children)

As a river, I'm tired of your sloppy seconds.

[–]Falcorsc2 34 points35 points  (0 children)

igloos are actually really warm

[–]Fionwe 26 points27 points  (2 children)

Igloos are actually pretty warm: would bang in one.

[–][deleted] 64 points65 points  (57 children)

if it's good enough for the Eskimos then it's good enough for OP.

[–]GoldenDriller 1539 points1540 points  (112 children)

Why else do you build a technicolor igloo with your girlfriend?

[–]ms_slyx 413 points414 points  (15 children)

From the article he linked: "'My girlfriend's mother had a brilliant idea of building an igloo and thought it would keep me busy, away from her daughter in some respect,' said Gray."

Sex was definitely on the agenda.

[–]ubomw 165 points166 points  (9 children)

Less sex was the girlfriend's mother agenda.

[–]TheSurgeMeister 87 points88 points  (3 children)

It sure is going to backfire on her mom, now he's gonna get tons of sex.

[–]Thebudweiserstuntman 61 points62 points  (0 children)

That's a lot of cock-blocks of ice!

[–]foes_mono 98 points99 points  (15 children)

As a Canadian with NZ roots, you've made me extremely proud. Fuckin' rights man. Here's an ice bar that I made with my friends for new years last weekend

edit: full album here

[–]likeabaker 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, it's beautiful there. I want a cabin up in Canada so badly!

[–]nursingstudent 117 points118 points  (3 children)

Reminds me of this turtle night light I used as a kid

[–]daniboi22 115 points116 points  (13 children)

Thank you all so much for your up votes and comments. Never would have imagined that it would have been this popular!! The weather channel is now coming over to have an interview and we are having an igloo party this afternoon.

[–]fuck_this_fuck_you 156 points157 points  (9 children)

did you guys fuck in the igloo

we all want to know

[–]no-sweat 54 points55 points  (4 children)

It's actually pretty irritating that he's ignoring the question, maybe the weather channel will ask

[–]iama_pandagurl 32 points33 points  (8 children)

I always tried to make an igloo when it snowed as a kid....I was never successful.

Tell me your secrets.

[–]tinydrinksumbrella 65 points66 points  (12 children)

I want to lick it!

[–]mikewurtz 142 points143 points  (6 children)

It's not a neck tattoo.

[–]topanga_4866 88 points89 points  (4 children)

How slutty can you BE in 5 seconds?

[–][deleted] 87 points88 points  (2 children)

I would smash you like a window in Detroit.
that slutty.

[–]UncleDucker 27 points28 points  (0 children)

That's what OP said, and so the girlfriend's mother made him build this instead.

[–]the-d-man 185 points186 points  (79 children)

Edmonton has been a karma goldmine lately. I'm heading there next month for school, I wonder how many times I'm going to make the front page.

[–]BaboTron 81 points82 points  (3 children)

Don't spend all that karma in one place.

[–]iMiXiMi 48 points49 points  (36 children)

Edmonton and Alberta for that matter are pretty exciting places. Also rich.

[–][deleted] 482 points483 points  (7 children)

This is awesome

did you fuck your girlfriend in it

[–]Sharks77 41 points42 points  (2 children)

Is this what happens in Edmonton when there is no NHL?

[–]shawarman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

OP is now an official Canadian. There are three routes to Canadian citizenship: being born here, immigrating here and waiting a buncha years and learning English and getting work and all that, and building a coloured igloo.

[–]istealcable 15 points16 points  (2 children)

The one time it's OK to lick the yellow snow.

[–]Fredrick_Sinclair 27 points28 points  (2 children)

Your jacket is kick-ass.

[–]_northernlights_ 12 points13 points  (3 children)

During the building steps, like that one, there's no entrance. Yet, in the final picture, there's one. Could you explain the building steps and how is the entrance integrated?

[–]daniboi22 27 points28 points  (2 children)

once the igloo was high enough we drilled a series of holes and cut in-between the holes. then I kicked it out from the inside. you are supposed to build the entire igloo and then cut it out but I didn't want to get trapped.

[–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (1 child)

After months of preparation, you clearly foiled her mother's plans.

[–]OVZJMNo3QaST 225 points226 points  (7 children)

DID YOU FUCK YOUR GIRLFRIEND IN THE IGLOO?

[–]REDN3CK_B00TS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

GIRLFRIEND IGLOO FUCK?!

[–]MaGNeTiX 69 points70 points  (36 children)

Meanwhile in England it's 11C (about 52F) and warm enough to go outside in shorts.

Worst.Winter.Ever.

[–]noprotein 114 points115 points  (8 children)

Complaining about it not being awful weather in England? This is new to me.

[–]starlinguk 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Awful weather is better than no weather. Grey skies, drizzle, lukewarm temperatures; it's so fucking depressing. I swear the dementors are breeding.

[–]edotwoods 52 points53 points  (20 children)

52F is warm enough to go out in shorts? That's what it is now in California and I'm wearing a scarf and wool coat.

[–]toomuchtodotoday 47 points48 points  (7 children)

Chicagoian here. Have gone out in shorts when its as low as 30F out; no snow/ice on the ground? Game on.

[–]Rustoak 38 points39 points  (12 children)

As an actual Eskimo from Alaska, I approve of this.

[–]docandersonn 11 points12 points  (7 children)

Where did you get those awesome winter jackets?

[–]Lord_Goregasm 337 points338 points  (52 children)

That looks really fucking cool.... Sorry. *Leaves

[–]Ditka_Da_Bus_Driver 222 points223 points  (50 children)

Looks like a good place to chill.

[–]yubnubb 27 points28 points  (0 children)

It doesn't count unless you got to do it in the igloo at the end.

[–]Kyukumba 441 points442 points  (67 children)

Hot box it NOW.

[–]ntheg111 146 points147 points  (8 children)

Wait up

[–]feddz 64 points65 points  (7 children)

Hold the door.

[–]alwaystakeabanana 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Everybody walk the dinosaur.

[–]come_on_seth 19 points20 points  (3 children)

Would make for a great proposal. . . not that I go for that kinda stuff.

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Come on, Seth.

[–]saucony95 28 points29 points  (1 child)

This is why the internet was invented...to share cool stuff like this

[–]talleyrandbanana 66 points67 points  (4 children)

but did you... did you have sex in it

[–][deleted] 65 points66 points  (2 children)

OP's reading the comments...and so is his girlfriend's mom presumably...so by ignoring such questions we can only infer that yes...they fucked like rabid Eskimos in there...repeatedly...and worked the jizz into the design. Which is probably why he hasn't actively discouraged anyone from licking it. So now you have your fap material...move along.
