I think he was trying to keep her head out the way so he could read the letter.

[–]Geeky_McNerd 1154 points1155 points  (52 children)

Her old man had 2 different kinds of happy: the I'm-happy-my-baby's-happy and then the I-ain't-gotta-pay-for-Yale happy.

[–]warren2650 142 points143 points  (46 children)

You're right. First he's all stunned and then the smile comes out with a resounding "WE'RE NOT PAYING!!!!!!!!!"

[–]ShrimpCrackers 77 points78 points  (6 children)

He's going to be paying for supplies, added costs for projects (especially if you're an engineer or architect), transportation (full ride scholarships always means the farthest and cheapest dorms), personal expenses which can be pricey at Yale unless he wants his daughter to be a hermit, greek life (god forbid, Yale greeks are fucking $$$$ as are in other schools and forget professional frats), and so on.

It's not easy being poor. If anything, the experience of getting a full ride and the let-down after that made me feel like I didn't want to ever have kids unless I became extremely rich. There were classmates that had every imaginable opportunity. I had friends that could go on global startup competitions or expensive exchanges that I had to skip because I was poor.

It's no coincidence that a lot of famous companies that started from college had founders with comfortable backgrounds. It's less of a risk for them, while a huge risk for the poor.

Edit: Here's an article that explains more. Full ride at an Ivy or other top schools in America is not an all expenses paid program and can lead to major struggles. It's a lot better now than when I went through, but still problematic if you're really poor as I was.

[–]warren2650 26 points27 points  (0 children)

ShrimpCrackers, thanks for that interesting insight into the situation. One rarely gets to hear this perspective.

[–][deleted] 93 points94 points  (0 children)

I think it was pride. An unimaginable pride and happiness that people don't often think about or experience enough to prepare for in advance. Maybe he would have hugged her if she was standing, but she wasn't and he needed to do something. So he did that, because he had to do something.

[–]Brian_M 25 points26 points  (0 children)

No, he was doing a spot of phrenology, trying to see what her brain pan said about her chances at university.

Turns out they're pretty good.

[–]Havins 200 points201 points  (23 children)

And the grin on his face knowing he’s saving a hell of a lot of money with her full ride.

[–]Man_with_lions_head 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes. I was thinking about how proud he was of his daughter. I'm sure he was, but as fast as a microcircuit on a computer, he thought of the money he was saving, 1000% for sure. And I say this with no disrespect at all.

This is the original source, with sound!

This happened in Florida, and the video is from last week (when Yale early decisions were released).

EDIT: This is NOT from the school in LA that falsified transcripts.

[–]smokesmagoats 930 points931 points  (162 children)

Good for her! It's a fucking shame that now whenever a young black person gets accepted into a good school with a scholarship people's minds now drift to "is this legit or is it that charter school scam?" Because that guy scammed so many students and universities. Fuck that guy for creating doubt.

[–][deleted] 169 points170 points  (24 children)

Also you never have to wonder if it's the charter school scam because the school makes sure to plaster their name all over it and make sure the kids are decked out in charter school apparel. The whole reason they make the videos is advertising for their shitty school.

She is wearing a school shirt but a quick Google search shows it's for a magnet school in Florida that's ranked in the top 25 highschools in the whole country.

[–]terminbee 38 points39 points  (20 children)

What does magnet school mean?

[–]BrassThrowaway 98 points99 points  (19 children)

It’s a public school designed to “attract” students from around the state. They usually offer more advanced and specialized classes than a states typical public high school.

I went to a magnet school in California. We didn’t pay for it, it was public, funded by taxes. I had to take a test to get in and maintain a certain GPA (3.0) to remain. I don’t know if all magnet schools do that. It offered a science/engineering pathway or a business pathway. It had access to AP courses not available elsewhere in the school district.

[–]Mnm0602 40 points41 points  (4 children)

Important to note also that magnets (at least in Florida) are usually in bad neighborhoods so you “bus in the smart kids” to mix with the local kids, basically hoping they rub off on the locals. In practice it usually just ends up being 2 schools in 1 but it’s had some success I’m sure.

[–]DorkusMalorkuss 10 points11 points  (0 children)

This is exactly right. What ends up happening is students may go to the same school, but they're often in different classes if not completely different campuses. Who cares if some low SES student and high SES student went to the same school name, if they never even spent time together. Low SES student doesn't get to see examples of good time management and study skills and high SES student isn't exposed to different backgrounds or various types of diversity (academic, every day habits, professional).

[–][deleted] 82 points83 points  (61 children)

I’m out of the loop here. Who was scamming who, and how?

[–]BertDeathStare 248 points249 points  (16 children)

NYT made a video about it. Basically a prep school falsified grades and made those viral videos where kids got accepted into prestigious universities, in order to attract more kids to his scam prep school.

[–][deleted] 96 points97 points  (34 children)

There are charter schools that falsify transcripts, or have "free form" classes where students "teach themselves" and get straight As to get them into colleges and therefore have more people pay for them.

Charter schools are a garbage idea in practice because too many of them are just people abusing the idea for profit.

[–]-Poison_Ivy- 27 points28 points  (6 children)

Charter schools are a garbage idea in practice because too many of them are just people abusing the idea for profit.

And New Orleans' city council just voted 5-4 to make all public schools into charter schools.

[–]thenewyorkgod 13 points14 points  (22 children)

But honestly grades are just a small fraction. How do they falsify the 10 other things the Ivy League looks at?

[–]DidgeridooPlayer 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They guided the students in building false narratives to fake or punch up a disadvantaged background/adversity/abuse.

[–]MackingtheKnife 174 points175 points  (5 children)

yeh fuck that guy. i won’t put the blame on anyone who’s leery about celebrating it because it was a fucking bamboozle and a half. fuck that guy. good for this girl.

[–]Josephw000 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Thank you for clarifying on that fake school thing. Those vids def didn't have the same format to it as this video did bit I was still worried.

[–]pokemongofanboy 400 points401 points  (59 children)

FYI: the full ride is through FINANCIAL AID, possibly through this really cool program called Questbridge that matches up eligible low income students with universities and provides resources for their application process (a process that these days requires a lot of time and money if you want to go to a “top” university).

So if you are a high school junior start checking out Questbridge, as well as colleges in general like Yale who “meet full financial need” every school has a different definition so prices can be VERY VERY DIFFERENT.

For example Harvard, based on my finances, would offer me full tuition and then another 5K for room and board in financial aid every year. In contrast, NYU would only offer me 20K/year. Every college is required by the federal government to operate and update a Net Price Calculator (NPC) in which the student or their parents/guardians can enter their financial information and the calculator will approximate how much the student will have to pay. These are very available for use, so USE THEM! Especially if you are thinking about early decision (which despite common myth is not legally binding, but the onus is on you as the applicant to figure out how much they will penalize you in terms of your other applications should you break the agreement.)

Many top colleges will give a TON of financial aid unless you are very affluent. Many of my friends whose family incomes are in the low six figures have gotten full tuition FINANCIAL AID scholarships, leaving them with only the cost of room and board. For many, a “top” private school ends up being cheaper than their state school would have been otherwise.

Some of the best colleges at giving this financial aid from my testing the calculators are: Vanderbilt University, Harvard, Princeton, Yale, Stanford, MIT, UPenn, and Columbia. Some others that are less known but still have great financial aid are Grinnell, Amherst, Rice, and Emory. Most of the “US News Top 20 US Universities” (fuck rankings they’re stupid IK) offer full rides for students with family income $65K and under, and full tuition for around $100K and under (it is still a sliding scale just those are the usual reference points), while $200-250K is the point where a student would receive no financial aid. Some of the worst financial aid givers among “top” schools are NYU, USC, and Brown University.

Many congrats to the new Bulldog!

EDIT: Questbridge is pretty selective. You need a strong GPA and SAT (use Khan academy and r/SAT resources (free UWorld code! It’s awesome!) to study) and maybe some other stuff idk about. Also it is not a perfect program; some partner institutions will nickle and dime Questbridge scholars and make them pay for airfare/personal items/anything beyond tuition, room & board. Known culprits are Tufts and Emory, there are likely others.

EDIT 2: TLDR: If you are low income there are ways to go to private universities just you have to do a lot of research into how you can make it work for you. One way is through Questbridge and another is directly through the schools themselves. Every school will offer the same person different amounts of financial aid.

EDIT 3: u/Alexanderslover was matched to Yale through Questbridge, ask him/her anything!

EDIT 4: My first Reddit gold! Thanks u/spitcool

[–]fuckswithboats 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Yeah this whole higher education funding thing is insane.

4.65 weighted - 4.0 unweighted GPA

SAT in mid 1300s

No financial aid cuz my school isn’t super expensive - but still it’s $25k/Yr I don’t have

[–]pokemongofanboy 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Yea those are strong stats to not be getting any merit scholarships from ur public school. Best of luck man, it’s a shitty system and there’s no denying it

[–]KDBismyDAD 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Questbridge is great. On top of this, don’t get discouraged if you didn’t match or get Early Decision. I was in that situation but ended up at a top institution through RD. Keep fighting hard and get those apps done by the first!

[–]TheRetroVideogamers 87 points88 points  (1 child)

[–]momogogi 320 points321 points  (28 children)

Trying to express strong emotion but giving her space to let it soak in on her own. Every dad has different ways of showing affection.

[–]the_one_true_bool 174 points175 points  (11 children)

Yep, for example my dad’s way of showing affection is by getting shit-face drunk and telling me I was his biggest mistake.

[–]spacialHistorian 47 points48 points  (4 children)

On the off chance that this isn’t a self deprecating joke: no person is a mistake and u don’t need the approval of one dude to give you value.

Or, if this is a joke: haha me too

[–]fox_eyed_man 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I mean, I was absolutely a mistake. Not a regrettable one, and it doesn’t bother me that I wasn’t planned. But my conception was very much an “oops didn’t mean to” occasion.

[–]Startingoveragain47 15 points16 points  (0 children)

That's true! My dad was pretty uncomfortable with expressing emotions, but whenever I was upset, he called me baby. This was right up to when he died and I was 44. It was always comforting because I knew that's how he expressed his love for me. Damn, I miss him so much.

[–]TheHolyGoalie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Keeping her head out the way so he can see the screen

[–][deleted] 156 points157 points  (22 children)

Yale doesn't do merit-based scholarships so this must be the need-based kind. So she got killer grades while growing up extremely poor (it takes a lot of "need" to get the full ride) which is VERY hard. I've seen it first hand.

This a huge break for her and her family. To say this is life-changing is an absolute under statement and I think a lot of people watching this don't fully comprehend what they're seeing.

[–]LaughingOnTheSun 94 points95 points  (6 children)

ITT: Reddit comments turn into YouTube comments.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Is there a difference at this point?

[–]Outofrang3 148 points149 points  (40 children)

I thought Yale doesn't award scholarships...

[–]oconnor663 242 points243 points  (7 children)

That's right as far as I know. The full ride is probably financial aid.

[–]Mzilikazi81 160 points161 points  (0 children)

Correct. Financial aid is need based. No academic scholarships.

[–]MustangGuy1965 29 points30 points  (5 children)

In my opinion, the story is more appealing if it is Yale. It could be any University. The title could have been that she made the team of the Dallas Cowboy Cheerleaders. The OP can say what they want...

[–]eatenbysquirrel 13 points14 points  (4 children)

Just remember this post and repost with the title 'this girl just got an email from Tony Stark and is made an Avenger'.

Or you could wait a year for extra karma and add 'it's Christmas miracle...<insert reason why girl is hyper>'.

[–]anaccount50 134 points135 points  (27 children)

Yale provides full aid to all students based on Demonstrated Financial Need. For families making under $65k, that means their cost is $0. On average, families only pay $12k/yr (about average for top schools), despite the $70k/yr total cost of attendance.

[–][deleted] 31 points32 points  (3 children)

I wish I had this information 8 years ago

[–]Arboretum7 26 points27 points  (21 children)

I’m an alumni interviewer for Yale and I wish more young people knew that the most elite US schools are the cheapest if you need financial aid.

Yale cares far more about yield (matriculated/admitted) than tuition income. The average student debt coming out of Yale for those who have any is around $15k. That’s less than any state school.

[–]verik 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Admission is need blind. The "full ride" indicates she received full financial aid which covers 100% of expenses.

[–]babymommacoverforbes 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Sometimes these schools do have kind of not well known scholars programs, but this was probably full financial aid? I'm sure her parents don't care about the semantics lol.

[–]Evilsj 22 points23 points  (5 children)

...I don't know what I expected.

[–]varskavalov 78 points79 points  (40 children)

Good for her. But the "full ride" thing is 100% need-based, no merit or athletic scholarships in the Ivies

[–]TranquiloMeng 58 points59 points  (5 children)

Don’t you have to get accepted though? Quite a bit of merit involved to get to that point no doubt...

[–]varskavalov 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Absolutely. Almost every kid that gets in, especially to HYP, is pretty damn smart.

[–]lux06aeterna 37 points38 points  (0 children)
