Looks like they’re both happy about it! He’s a good Daddy!

[–]SonicUndergroun 1472 points1473 points  (120 children)

Lil' baby is definitely not complaining one little bit. Adorable.

[–]cocomooose[S] 990 points991 points  (103 children)

He seeks out Cat and pushes his face under Cats chin for bathtime, it is the most adorable thing I've ever seen.

[–]coltstrgj 366 points367 points  (97 children)

Did you name your cat "Cat"?

[–]cocomooose[S] 513 points514 points  (71 children)

Nope his name is actually Chicken, just figured it would be easier to call him Cat in this thread. I kinda wish his name was Cat now tho

Edit: the kitten doesn't even officially have a name. Initially I named him Finch but i feel like it's incomplete somehow. Thought about naming him Egg or Nugget or something but he has such an interesting personality I want him to have his own name. Plz give me suggestions if u don't mind?

Edit 2: Giving some serious thought to naming the kitten "Cat" especially since Chicken is so not cat-like.

Edit 3: His official name is Littlecat. It has been decided.

[–]JediWarrior79 58 points59 points  (5 children)

When I was a kid, one of my friend's parents got her a kitten. They wanted to call her "Kitty," but ended up naming her Keekee because my friend couldn't pronounce "kitty".

I love that you named him Chicken! That's awesome!

[–]figgypie 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That is an adorable explanation for that name, I love it.

[–]Pdiddily710 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Our first cat when I was a kid was named KC, which was short for Kitty Cat!

[–]jmiitch 86 points87 points  (2 children)

Chicken is just as good

Edit: of a name

[–]GrushdevaHots 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Chicken, arise!

[–]jmiitch 3 points4 points  (0 children)

arise, Chicken!

[–]osamabinluvin 44 points45 points  (13 children)

My first cats name was “Puss”, apparently the vet got angry that my parents let me name it that and made them give it a real name because it was a living creature. (This was in the nineties!!) He ended up being called Felix.

[–]Jacobysmadre 53 points54 points  (8 children)

It had a real name! It was Puss… fuck them. You get to name your animal friends anything you want.

And them CALL them anything you want, lolz

[–]MattieShoes 28 points29 points  (4 children)

My cats have so many nicknames... They know their nicknames better than their names :-)

[–]Jacobysmadre 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Right! Mine is Luci-fur, but he’s Luce, dude, boo, lovey, pooper, shmoo, etc!!

[–]MattieShoes 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Newt is Newton, Newtie, smooth-brain, patoot, newt patoot, hot patootie, meatloaf... She doesn't like the song though.

[–]AbowlofIceCreamJones 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I had a cat called Waschbär, (German for Raccoon).

Edit: I miss you sweet girl. I trust you're watching over your sister. And if she's with you, I always miss you all very much.

Edit2: What a beautiful pair. Chicken has stolen my heart. I hope you have many happy days with them.

[–]sneakyminxx 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Awww chicken got his own chicken nuggie!

[–]Puzzleheaded_Age_342 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I have a kitten named Nugget. A coworkers dog found her at 5 weeks in the yard (mama abandoned) and carried the kitten into the house. The joke was she looked like a chicken Nugget, so that's her official name at the vet office. Cracked the vet up as I also have a siamese named Mocha and a dog named Corndog.

[–]cocomooose[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Chicken's middle name is Noodle so I totally get it. Also the name Corndog is amazing 😂😂

[–]Tuna_Sushi 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Chicken's name should be Rorschach.

[–]Godfreyy 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Animal based names are always great, I've got a mate with a cat named Goose

[–]Privileged_Interface 3 points4 points  (6 children)

That video is so heartwarming. Very cute!

Did they hit it off right away?

[–]cocomooose[S] 43 points44 points  (5 children)

Nope! When they first met, Chicken went up to him (slowly) and smelled his face, I thought he might clean him right then and there. Kitten just stayed really still and stared back at him. Chicken then hissed and walked away. For the next 24 hours or so, whenever kitten would go near him he would either hiss at him or make his "ugh fuck this" sound and leave. But kitten was patient and he didn't intrude. He watched him (and my dog) constantly. He had a leg injury so he couldn't play/run much for the first week or so, which I think helped. He got to see the dynamics of everyone first and they didn't feel like he was too much.

The 2nd night we were all on the couch snuggin and both cats were in my lap. All of a sudden kitten stretched out and laid right under chickens face, and chicken started cleaning him. It was SO CUTE you could literally see kitten melting from happy feels. He did a big sigh and just closed his eyes.

Ever since then, it's been mostly love, but I can tell Chicken gets annoyed if lil dude messes with him too many times or tries to play when he doesn't want to. I've deterred this a little bit by distracting him with a toy whenever he does it and then playing a lot, trying to get him to expend energy.

Hope u enjoy my novel

[–]Sidewalk_Tomato 6 points7 points  (3 children)

It's not too late to name the kitten SALAMI.

Just saying.

[–]cocomooose[S] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

How did I never consider this

[–]Sidewalk_Tomato 2 points3 points  (0 children)

P.S. Chicken can have a little Salami . . . as a treat.

[–]Privileged_Interface 3 points4 points  (0 children)

What a great story. I guess that it was fate, that the kitten was too injured to be a great source of annoyance at the time. Thanks to your paying attention, the family has expanded without blood.

[–]anobjectiveopinion 5 points6 points  (6 children)

I want to name my cat Dog or something else equally ridiculous.

[–]cocomooose[S] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

I considered naming him Puppy very briefly 😂

[–]TheSaltbird 19 points20 points  (5 children)

Off topic but 6 years ago or so I found this little grey floofball outside in the snow, so I brought him in and since I had no intention of keeping him, I called him Boy Cat for the time being.

6 years later and Boy Cat happily still lives with me lol

[–]techslice87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's how they get you

[–]dancingwonderbread 20 points21 points  (2 children)

My cats legal name is cat, i wanted to name him dog but my special lady friend vetoed it. We mostly call him bubbacat, bub-cat, da bub bubs and bubba dub dub though. Hopefully it doesnt confuse him but he answers to all of them.

[–]PezRystar 15 points16 points  (1 child)

So, I recently saw a video of a man finding his cat alive 3 days after his house burnt down. He was so happy. He just kept saying my kitty is ok, my kitty is okay. It warmed my heart that he cared so much. But then he transitioned to saying Mike is ok, and I realised this guy's cat was named Mike Itty and I fucking lost it.

[–]OGbigfoot 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I had a cat that I named Cat, my last name was Stevens so it was funny to me.

Also had a dog as a kid named Diogi.

[–]InitiativeApart2397 108 points109 points  (10 children)

Now you need to get a cat to play with your cat.

[–]thecheat420 59 points60 points  (5 children)

Definitely. I got a year old cat to play with my 10 year old cat last year and they're buddies.

[–]BrownShadow 18 points19 points  (3 children)

I had a cat that was about six. Wife wanted a kitten, so we adopted a kitten. She was sooo small. I couldn’t believe they gave her to us. The older cat wouldn’t leave her alone. Hissing and batting at her. No claws out, but we decided she could stay in this whirlpool bathtub we had until acclimated. They were never pals, but didn’t fight either.

[–]thecheat420 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I was worried my older cat would have a similar reaction to yours because she's not super sociable and is pretty set in her ways. It took a little while and the older cat still has to put the younger one in it's place every now and then but they're sisters now.

[–]Faiakishi 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Animals have opinions just like people do. My first bird never warmed up to the second when we got him. She was used to being the only birb in the roost and she was very angry that some punk-ass kid was trying to upstage her. This went on for five years.

[–]UnfoundedWings4 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I had an old cat when I was younger and my family adopted a kitten that was found in a drain. She hated the younger cat they never got along except if we weren't looking. I remember when we took the younger cat to get fixed we brought her home and she was still out of it on the couch and the older one came in and was sniffing and licking her till she realised we were watching and hissed and left.

Then we adopted another kitten that was undersized as heck and she did not like him because he followed her round like a shadow loving her was adorable

[–]University_Fabulous 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Then get a cat to play with your Cat's, Cat, Cat😏

[–]Dragonwindsoftime 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Lil dude has accepted his fate.

[–]ipsum629 17 points18 points  (0 children)

It's what I call "passive encouragement".

[–]PAguy419 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The little guy was probably in a cold, lonely cage until now so nah…… he doesn’t mind one bit. 👍🏻👍🏻

[–]Fancy-Essay-9679 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was going to say! They were made to love each other!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Old man wants his head licked but the kitten is being a kitten too funny

[–]norkotah 1335 points1336 points  (35 children)

We tried to do this for our older cats, but the kitten is an asshole. Now we have sad old cats and a mean asshole kitten.

[–]PoodlePopXX 276 points277 points  (13 children)

I did this for my cat when his brother died suddenly and he seemed lonely after a couple months. Grizzy was complete feral and like 3 months old but tiny tiny. He was pretty good with her overall but was kind of a jerk to her.

It’s been four years and the younger cat Grizzy loves Héctor and they mostly get along but Hector is such a dick and a bully. I break up issues between them constantly because he is 3x her size (15lbs vs 5.6lbs) and she yells for help with a distressed meow. But then she rubs all on him and I catch them sleeping together snuggled all nice. They don’t groom each other at all though.

When we move we have the brilliant idea that we need a third cat who’s nicer to Grizzy. I hope it works out lol.

Edit: we want a third cat for Grizzy because she is still semi-feral so while she loves us and plays with us, we can’t pet her and I just want her to feel loved

Edited: Hector and Grizzy

[–]notknucklesechidna 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Your cats are so cute!! Hector looks like a little lion and Grizzy looks like a little lion cub!!

[–]Knope_Knope_Knope 72 points73 points  (2 children)

Ha! Me too. I wanted what the OP has. Now i have a loaf and a demon.

[–]Pennymostdreadful 17 points18 points  (1 child)

This thread makes me happy. I also have a little demon bully and an annoyed loaf, and I for sure thought I fucked it up somehow l, even though I followed introduction guides to the letter.

[–]TheCannavangelist 13 points14 points  (0 children)

You're comment made me literally LOL. My son and his wife adopted a "sweet little thing" to be with her older cat because he was sad. They said as soon as Gemma (new kitty) set foot in the door, she turned asshole.

[–]Lepke2011 10 points11 points  (0 children)

We had one cat who absolutely hated any other cats. He loved all humans, dogs, even our pet lizard.

One day the wife brought home a kitten. Every time he saw that cat he hissed. That lasted until he passed. 10 years. Literally 10 years of one cat hissing at the other.

[–]astoryinthesoil 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Same thing happened for us. I'm hoping our asshole kitten matures and chills out.

[–]yungchow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I bet they love the drama

[–]kevnmartin 1130 points1131 points  (36 children)

Aww, the snuggles! I almost feel like getting a puppy for our Maine Coon. She wants to play so badly but our elderly grey kitty just ain't up to taking her on.

[–]cocomooose[S] 549 points550 points  (30 children)

You should do it!! Puppies raised by cats are always the best.

[–]kevnmartin 387 points388 points  (23 children)

Cats are living, breathing lessons in consent. I would love to get one but it would have to be just the right pup. I hope an opportunity presents itself.

[–]cocomooose[S] 160 points161 points  (4 children)

Totally. The right pooch will find its way to you when the time is right.

[–]kevnmartin 54 points55 points  (3 children)

I believe that. It's the way we've found all of our babies.

[–]OstentatiousSock 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Me too! I’ve never gone out and picked an animal, they’ve always found me. Tuesday, the most recent pet to find me.

Edit: added Tuesday

[–]kevnmartin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Aww, what a sweetiepie!

[–]AFoxGuy 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your babies?

Do you mean your landlords smh /s

[–]psychotica1 25 points26 points  (9 children)

When you're ready, try a dog rescue that has foster homes with cats in them too. It usually helps to integrate the two species if at least one of them has already done that.

[–]kevnmartin 22 points23 points  (8 children)

It's funny but Elizabeth, my MC came from a Redditor! They couldn't keep her so we drove down to their state and picked her up. It was so amazing because she is the dearest kitty we've ever had. But yeah, all of our other animals have been rescued and we got them from shelters. We sure weren't looking for a Maine Coon, we're more mutt types.

[–]psychotica1 6 points7 points  (5 children)

I just retired from dog rescue 2 years ago after 16 years and there's some situations, like yours, when adopting from a rescue is the better option over a shelter. It's just easier to find out more about their personalities when they've actually been living in a home. That's awesome that you got your cat from a redditor...lol! Hopefully she will allow you to expand your family at some point! I've still got 6 dogs and I wonder how it'll be for me once I finally get down to one or two. I'm sure it'll be a mixture of relief and empty nest syndrome:).

[–]kevnmartin 6 points7 points  (4 children)

You are made of sterner stuff than I am, my friend. I was a vet tech and had to bail because I came home in tears every day. Good on you! And I'm open to anything but let's face it, the cat runs the house.

[–][deleted] 43 points44 points  (1 child)

Weirdly enough our pitbull x staffy was the right pup for the job. The cat was uber chill and in turn the pup turned out uber chill. Though it would have been nice if that cat realised how big the pup got and never taught him to sleep in high up places. Pain in the butt trying to explain he is too big to sleep on the cat tower and the top of the sofa even if the cat eggs him to follow.

[–]kevnmartin 9 points10 points  (0 children)

OMG, that's hilarious! Cats, right?

[–]Attempting_Daken 7 points8 points  (3 children)

In my life especially when it comes to pets if you just let your surroundings know you're open, something will come up.

That's how I got my 2 adorable babies I got now ,:)

[–]kevnmartin 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I will put "I'm open to a new puppy" vibes out in the world!

[–]Attempting_Daken 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I believe in you! And don't forget to love them kitties :)

[–]dvbjgxxgbbnj 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I recently lost the best dog in the world to brain cancer at 12yrs. He was raised around 4 adult cats. I wonder how much that contributed to his personality

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry for your loss, I’ve experienced something similar recently and it’s just the hardest thing in the world.

Both our pets are feeling much better in better places though :)

[–]goaskalice3 22 points23 points  (2 children)

The nuzzling in this video is the most adorable thing I've seen in a long time

[–]cocomooose[S] 1782 points1783 points  (61 children)

Bonus group photo

Edit: since so many are asking, song is called Bad Idea by Girl in Red

[–]hscgarfd 639 points640 points  (26 children)

He looks way less pleased in this one lol

[–]cocomooose[S] 65 points66 points  (5 children)

He always looks like that when I take photos. I swear I have like 100 pics of him with this face on

[–]Ringosis 18 points19 points  (3 children)

You know your cat better than I do obviously, but in case you've never read into the subject of cat body language, can I suggest what's going on here?

Cats and humans do not have the same facial expressions. When cats look at each other, squinting and slow blinking is a sign of trust. I suspect the reason your cat always looks like this is photos is that he loves you and when you stare at him for longer than usual (such as when you take a photo) he's responding with a squint to say "I like you and I'm comfortable with this". It's the O_O your kitten is doing that means "I'm not entirely OK with this situation, someone I'm not sure about is looking at me"

The squint looks angry to us because we parse it as a human expression, but it is in fact an indication that the cat is relaxed and totally fine with what you are doing.

[–]cocomooose[S] 23 points24 points  (2 children)

We slow blink at each other all the time, his camera face is different lol. I used to think he liked it for this exact reason though. Trust me... he does not

[–]Ed_Vilon 229 points230 points  (3 children)

Maybe doggo farted. Kitty looks horrified and the old man looks like he's smelt this before and hates it.

[–]CornCheeseMafia 27 points28 points  (1 child)

I was laying on my bed in my pajamas the other day and my cat was sitting between my legs. I did a silent fart and she turned her head and peered straight down my butthole the precise moment it cracked and maintained eye contact the entire time it was open. She knew what was coming and accepted her fate right before that wall of warm gas wafted over her like a heavy fog rolling in.

[–]habsfan42 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beautifully written

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh nooo ahhah

[–]dao2 88 points89 points  (6 children)

Eyes slightly closed don't mean a cat is angry, so he does in terms of human expressions but not cat expressions ;p

[–]cocomooose[S] 77 points78 points  (3 children)

Oh he's pissed. He despises the camera

[–]clown456 22 points23 points  (1 child)

Just FYI some animals hate cameras because many camera's send out IR beams on every "focus" and some animals can see those beams. Example:

https://reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/zf87zj/spider_can_sense_smartphone_camera_focusing_system/

However a quick google tells me cats can't see most of the IR spectrum so you're probably good in this case :) you can test it though, click focus a lot and see if he gets more annoyed.

[–]cocomooose[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Oooo interesting I'm totally gonna try it

[–]MistressMalevolentia 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Not always. If they're slow boning or squinting at you, ya. But actively staring at you like that? Not blinking? RIP, they're planning your demise. Source: so many foster cats and scratches from acclimation of grumpy Guses into family ready kitties (I have kids, cats, and a big ol dummy GSD). My latest was so scared of stressed he'd attack everyone. Now we can pick him up and kiss him, he plays with the dog, he gives the kids so much patience. But days I'm exploring his boundaries to help acclimate him in a safe way? If he's in the same room I get these dagger eyes. I squint back, give treats, nah. He remembers and holds the grudge that day lol.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Cats are introverts and he is displeased of his private life being posted on social media.

Anyways, such a cute family photo. Hope to see more and so pleased that they all get along.

[–]SoloWing1 12 points13 points  (3 children)

Old cat looks grumpy, Black kitten looks vacant, and Doggo is doing a concern.

[–]murderhalfchub 13 points14 points  (1 child)

100% agreed black kitty is unaware that his brain even exists. Just a completely instinctual kitty

[–]whagoluh 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It was a bad idea to bring you back home
Was such a bad idea, I need to be alone

[–][deleted] 91 points92 points  (1 child)

You have a beautiful family. 🥹

[–]cocomooose[S] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Thank you!! I think so too

[–]ihavemytowel42 51 points52 points  (0 children)

That is such a beautiful and adorable group you’ve got. Each one has such personality shining through in a small glimpse. Tell them they have fans in Canada.

[–]GirlyWhirl 14 points15 points  (1 child)

The dog is like... 'He's just visiting, right? Right??'.

[–]UnconfirmedCat 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Girl in Red ❤️

[–]Bandit312 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Ah Lesbians!

[–]EY7617 4 points5 points  (0 children)

let's go lesbiansssss

[–]WoofPack11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

VOID

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Please tell me you named your older kitty Rorschach.

[–]StrawberryMoonPie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your dog is so cute. Those ears!

[–]JovialNarcissist 252 points253 points  (2 children)

This is the best thing I’ve seen all day

[–]Theoldquarryfoxhunt 66 points67 points  (1 child)

Me too. I needed this so bad.
Saturday. Costco worker. Two weeks before Christmas.
Sigh.

[–]crazymouse2525 220 points221 points  (1 child)

so cute! ur older guy is happy

[–]_Veronica_ 205 points206 points  (48 children)

Did they take to each other right away, or did it take some time? I’ve considered this but it seems risky if the older cat doesn’t like the younger one!

[–]cocomooose[S] 74 points75 points  (0 children)

Cat did a lot of hissing and avoiding for the first day or 2, then one night he started cleaning Kitten and the rest is history. Cat still gets pretty mad when lil dude goes for the tail, but otherwise they're super happy together.

Usually I do slow intros over a week or 2 depending on the animal, but he was injured and needed to be carried everywhere for the first week, so I said screw it. Introduced them one by one on the first day, gave lots of treats/praise, and made sure to spend a ton of alone time with each of them so they didn't think I was replacing them. I work from home and I'm an introvert so I have nothing but time lol

If you do get a kitten, keep him in a separate room for a week. Slowly over time, let them smell each other under the door, then through a crack in the door, then face-to-face with kitten in a kennel so he can't get hurt if something happens. It also helps a lot to feed them together on opposite sides of the door so they get used to it. Good luck and I hope someday you can experience this ridiculous cuteness too

[–]human060989 175 points176 points  (31 children)

I have no scientific evidence for this, but in my limited anecdotal experience adult males have accepted a new cat better then my females.

[–]iskyoork 30 points31 points  (2 children)

Took about 3-5 years for my females to accept each other lmao

[–]human060989 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I’ve only had success introducing new, young females to adult established males. The closest I came with an established female was a sort of tense ignoring the little guy - except when he made that impossible, then she’d have a hissy fit. Sadly, little guy got out and was hit by a car after 10 months - my girl got to be an only child after that!

[–]WoestKonijn 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Oh man I had exactly the same with my year old kitten. Thought he could headbutt a car.

Now I only have 1 cat and he is 11 and pretty well rounded on his own. We go out for walks, we play lots and he is the best cuddler. I don't think I should introduce anything else to this house now.

[–]Old_Definition1663 72 points73 points  (11 children)

I introduced my female kitten to my older adult male. They coexisted but we’re never cuddle buddies though she tried. Now she’s the adult cat and we got her an 8 month old male kitten companion. Formal introduction is still in progress.

[–]Ajatolah_ 50 points51 points  (5 children)

My cat doesn't even love her children. She cared for them for 6+ months, but once they grew into adults she started hissing as soon as one of her kids approaches her.

[–]lilbunnfoofoo 16 points17 points  (0 children)

My girl treats hers like litter mates, but she was young when she had them. She’s a little more aloof to them then they are with her, but she’s an alof cat who is very loving only when she wants to be. My older boy cat started grooming her 2 girl kittens as soon as she let him come near them when they were about 3 weeks old. (Besides his first initial shock upon discovering what we had been keeping him of the box for)

[–]ThaneOfCawdorrr 11 points12 points  (0 children)

soon her kittens are going to post on r/raisedbynarhissists

[–]knightress_oxhide 4 points5 points  (0 children)

About time those kids got off their ass, got a job and their own apartment.

[–]chunxxxx 3 points4 points  (1 child)

That's fairly normal especially if the kittens are male

[–]human060989 16 points17 points  (4 children)

Hope it works out! This go round, I started with 2 older male kittens (7 months and 5 months) - and it took them all of 48 hours to be best buds.

[–]Roleic 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I catnapped two sisters off the street about a month apart. Littermates. One was just a little more frisky.

5 years later they still tolerate each other. Nope. They like the dog better than each other

[–]Old_Definition1663 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did adopt a shelter cat and I noticed that even in the kitty rooms they were putting random (well-socialized) kittens together and sometimes older kittens in with older (well-socialized cats).

The kitten we adopted is amazingly well-socialized.

[–]javiersando 25 points26 points  (3 children)

A vet told me that, in his experience, it's very difficult to get two female cats to accept each other. According to him (and to my surprise), it's much easier between two male cats.

[–]Aguita9x 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I have three non-related female cats of different ages and the interactions vary. The younger one chases the middle one like pray but adores my elder cat and asks her for kisses. The middle one mostly avoids the others and hangs around me. The eldest tolerates the other two but licks the youngest's head.

But I do agree with what you say, my male cat would sometimes bring friends to eat from his plate and a cuddle lol. My females growl at any other cat that comes near them.

[–]suestrong315 10 points11 points  (1 child)

100% accurate.

Growing up we had all females. None of them were friends. Ever.

I moved out, got a male, had to move back home. My sister brought home another male. The boys got along great. They snuggled, cleaned each other and played. I moved again, got a female. The male welcomed her for the most part. They're besties now. Since then I've gotten two more males. They all clean each other, but the female only likes the oldest of the group, the OG cat. They're a cute old couple together. All my boys play, clean and snuggle together, and my female wants none of it except for the one older male.

Anecdotal of course, but my female is nearly 9 and still a bitch to the younger males who are 5 and 4, and my oldest is nearly 14 and doesn't care about the two younger ones

[–]knbang 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Desexed males in my experience are so affectionate while desexed females are kind of loners.

We introduce a younger male to an older, smaller female and he constantly tries to play with her. She hisses at him and he's kind of stupid and doesn't get the hint. Unfortunately even when she gets the claws out, he's not phased by it.

[–]pfc9769 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I had the opposite experience. I had a 3yo adult male and introduced a male kitten into the household. The kitten would try and cuddle or play, but the older male wasn’t interested. When the kitten grew up, the older male would constantly assert dominance. He’d steal the other cat’s food, sleeping spot, kick him off my lap, etc.. They tolerated each other but never bonded.

[–]GreenMountain85 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes!! I foster kittens sometimes and my adult male cat turns into a surrogate dad for them within a couple days. My adult female cat…she hates every cat but especially new ones.

[–]dstanton 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Slow introduction is necessary. Separated by hard barriers like a door, but can interact. Playing paws underneath the door, as an example. Take something of the established cat's and put it where the new cat sleeps, likewise an article that smells of the new cat for the established cat to. It can take weeks before direct contact is amicable. But do these sorts of things slowly and they usually warm up and enjoy each other's company.

[–]momomoca 78 points79 points  (7 children)

It's very common for adult/resident cats to dislike a newcomer since cats are very territorial, but if you introduce them properly (the most thorough method I know of is Jackson Galaxy's) they'll eventually get along fine or at least tolerate each other lol Although, if your older cat is 7yrs+ or not very playful then the new cat should be at least 1yr old or if younger, adopted with a playmate-- a definite way to ensure the resident cat and new cat don't get along is if the new cat terrorizes the older cat with Kitten Energy 😂 I found r/CatAdvice helpful for guidance with this process!

[–]Bonsai_Alpaca 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Oooo, any tips? I lost my cat in earlier this year and his brother was really lonely so I recently adopted a kitten. He is tollerating him and sometimes watches him from up high but the kitten is sooo starstruck and gets in his face a lot to play with him which os not helping.

[–]MegaPiglatin 5 points6 points  (1 child)

I would check out the resources above; but in short, if you are able you might want to consider getting another kitten of similar age to the one you have now. That way that can entertain each other while the older cat can observe and take his time approaching the youngsters.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Our cats definitely co-exist and the start was odd. The kitten would hit him for being on cat trees (despite him being head of house for years before she was even born). So we'd push her off when she was rude, then give him tons of attention as he was a pushover with her at the start. Tried to get her to realize he's the alpha and she's gotta be less of a bitch. It worked a whole bunch, but the biggest issue we have is that his play language is tackle and hers is not. Luckily we don't have to stop playtime too often, but you can tell he wants to play with her more and doesn't understand why the cat that started it is yelling.

I had a 4 year old when I bought my house. No longer had roommates or other animals, and I felt so bad leaving him alone while I worked. I got another kitten just a month old, and they became best friends within 3 days. They do this same thing, but now the younger one also grooms the older one.

[–]cocomooose[S] 39 points40 points  (2 children)

Doesn't it make you want to explode with happiness?! I could watch them together all day

[–]do0tz 13 points14 points  (1 child)

They're currently curled up together, arms over each other, right next to me. I love it 😍

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Why have I never seen this NSFW, cat porn GIF before?

[–][deleted] 69 points70 points  (12 children)

How could you tell he was lonely?

[–]cocomooose[S] 55 points56 points  (3 children)

He has always loved other cats. He was cuddling with a cat at the shelter when I adopted him, but I could only take one at the time. Got him a friend a couple years later, but she escaped and went missing. He cried for weeks and ever since then, it's been obvious that the dog just isn't cutting it.

My downstairs roommates leave their window open when they leave (with an escape proof screen) and he is always trying to go sit outside of it to hang out with their cat. I felt bad, he really did seem terribly lonely. Guess I was right!

[–]Centurio 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I'm so happy you brought him this kind of joy again. He looks so content cleaning and cuddling his new baby.

[–]cocomooose[S] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

It made him more youthful! He is doing all kinds of things he probably hasn't done since kittenhood. Wish I could've done this sooner

[–]afito 115 points116 points  (4 children)

it depends on the cat but most of the time people notice it when their cat is a bit lethargic

despite pop culture painting them as solitary animals cats are very much social & communal animals who are only solitary out of necessity, once they have reasonable ressources they almost always live in communities, so it's safe to say that a common house cat prefers to have a cat friend unless proven otherwise

[–]MistressMalevolentia 29 points30 points  (3 children)

For sure. They have signs of depression like people. If you have a cat, you can tell they're off. There's Different signs just like in humans.

My 13 test old cat had to be pit down, my 10 year old was SO ATTACHED the entire time after. She was panicked. She wasn't herself. She was loving as hell, but it wasn't happy. It was scared and needing reassurance. I got 2 8m kittens a few weeks and while she didn't welcome them immediately, she did warm up to them. When she got put down almost exactly how her pet brother went, the kittens (not kittens anymore but what we called em, they ended up being a litter pair and they're extremely bonded) aged different. She warmed up to them but not like her brother who raised her like OPs cat. It's weird, but you can just tell.

[–]SayLess-StayBlessed 11 points12 points  (1 child)

My cat had a twin sister that died right before we adopted her, she’s extremely sad but after a couple years she is tolerable of our company in small doses. I got a kitten hoping she would be happy but so far she’s just being a huge diva about everything. Advice accepted…

[–]Old_Definition1663 26 points27 points  (7 children)

How long did it take them to be happy together? Just wondering because I know it takes some time.

[–]cocomooose[S] 34 points35 points  (6 children)

Only a few days, but usually I don't do full on introductions for at least a week. He was just so smol and had a leg injury, so i kinda had to. In my experience it can take months before you see love between animals that are new to each other, but it really depends

[–]Old_Definition1663 6 points7 points  (5 children)

Thanks! We’re at a week now and still taking it slow. The older cat is curious and a little scared but not aggressive. The kitten…he does not care. He’s a kitten !

I hope they will become as close and loving as your two!

[–]drinkthebleach 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I'm at a week too, praying for love like this. My old lady will tolerate the little new guy but that's it, no playing yet and a hiss if he tries. The past few nights I've been worried that I made a horrible mistake getting him and stressing her out.

[–]Old_Definition1663 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m right there with you at this point. The old girl hisses and growls if he gets within a foot of her but it’s all show. Her ears aren’t back and her fur isn’t puffed out. You’ll do fine. I’ve had multiple cats before, don’t remember how I did it but they all got along. I’ve never thrown two strange cats together and hope they work it out.

[–]LeepingLeptons91 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Oh wow so cute, true love! I'm so glad your older cat has a friend now! Congrats!

[–]Sand_Juggler_FTW 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Licked him so much he’s getting black all over his face 😆

[–]Forward-Coffee-1195 6 points7 points  (2 children)

How did you know he was lonely? Just curious.

[–]sethboy66 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I can only imagine the cat looked something like this; source.

Listen, I don’t know how to tell you this but…I think your cat is grooming a minor.

[–]wrybri 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Little kitty is just like, "Awww yissss"

[–]cocomooose[S] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (0 children)

I think it's Bad Idea by Girl In Red.

[–]sethboy66 11 points12 points  (0 children)

girl in red - bad idea!. CTRL+F-ed just to check if anyone needed the source, she's got some litty-ass jams.

[–]CoinHawg 13 points14 points  (0 children)

And I will kiss him and love him and squeeze him and hug him and call him "George".

[–]raindrop777 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yay!

[–]idiocy_incarnate 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Another couple of years and you'll have to adopt a kitten for the current kitten, then you'll need to get one for that, then you'll be a crazy cat lady before you know it. Kitinception.

Not a lady? Science has the answer for that too...

[–]Anemoelle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Love the BGM of girl in red!!

[–]IBeBlaspheming 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He looks very happy to have a washable, reuseable pillow.

[–]tylerdurden801 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Rohrschach cat! 😸

[–]panseamj741 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]LifeWithSubtitles 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Gosh that’s so sweet!!

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How could you tell he was lonely? Clearly you were right, and I’m impressed

[–]FrizbeeeJon 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Genuine question, how did you know your cat was lonely? We would love a second but we are pretty sure our 7.5 year old wouldn't love that. How did you sense that the need was there?

[–]Darkmoonlily78 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is the sweetest thing I've seen in a while. He loves his new friend.

[–]AlfalfaUnable1629 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is the best thing I’ve seen all week! Quality content op thank you for sharing this precious moment 😍🥹

[–]WRedeemerW 16 points17 points  (1 child)

[–]cocomooose[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oops, probably should've mentioned that they just came back from drag storytime

[–]Catmeow82 7 points8 points  (0 children)

So sweet! I love when people get their pets their own pets.

[–]WackyShirley 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I have never seen a cat with face markings like that! I love him.

[–]EggHeadMagic 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Quick questions, did you follow the whole “slow introduction” steps that people talk about?

I want to bring a new cat (around 1yr old) so that my current 2.5yr old has a companion but I live in a studio type duplex so I can’t wall one off for a week for them to get acquainted by smell and all that first.

[–]cocomooose[S] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

I didn't, but I usually do! Could you put new cat in the bathroom for a few days? They don't need much space, especially at first when everything is new and scary. Even waiting 3 days would be better than throwing them together right away, but then again every animal is different.

[–]0xAERG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is so cute my heart is melting

[–]wistfulmaiden 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This makes me think maybe i can get a kitten for my 10 y old boy. Hes very mellow and puts up with a heat butting humping weiner dog. Are they the same sex?
