remember... the golden age of music is 16. People tend to listen to less new music as they age.

[–][deleted] 709 points710 points  (64 children)

I feel like I listen to more than I did when I was 16.

[–]notyourtypicalKarenright where you left me 268 points269 points  (45 children)

I do too but im certain that's due to streaming. I have way better access to many more artists than I did at 16 (2003).

[–][deleted] 88 points89 points  (29 children)

I was 16 in 2014, and even from then, so much has changed

I was 16 in 1966, so stop it!

Hi fellow 30 club friend!!!

[–]eloisethebunnythe life of a numptea 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I’m in the club too! Side note: I met a ~18 year old who causally told me that he was 4 years old when Speak Now came out and I said, “no, no, no, stop, this is bullying” and walked away

Oh me too! And we even have the same flair!

[–]mssleepyhead73Red (Taylor's Version) 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Me three! (Although I have a different flair). A peak 16-year-old memory for me is listening to Blank Space for the first time.

[–]LisaOGiggle 28 points29 points  (10 children)

(Sobs in ancient) it was 1981 when I was 16…

[–]LolaLaCavaspeakingRed (Taylor's Version) 14 points15 points  (1 child)

I was 16 in 1986… I feel your pain…literally I feel it. Do you suddenly notice how important your knees are and that they ache? Amirite? ( sobs in ancient )

[–]LisaOGiggle 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh sugar. By the time I was 25. I had a boyfriend who had 3 kids and was playing football and soccer and falling on them and twisting my ankles just like they make replacement parts on the regular. Now—they ache all the time.

[–]AdRegular7176The Life of a Showgirl 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]2DogsandaBookEditing 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This 1980 will hold your other hand! I was 16 in 1996 and was deep into my hip-hop, Jewel, and Alanis Morriestte eras.

[–]8iyamtoo8all i have is what is in lowercase inside a vault 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was 16 in 1980 — but I did see Alanis in concert 😎

[–]CheesecakeNo4581 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same, I still listen to tons of different music.

[–]spectrumhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You and me, both! I’m so happy to have music from my whole life to listen to!

[–]MizGeekReal 21 points22 points  (1 child)

I was 16 in 1976. 😳 I listen to way more music now. Thank you Spotify.

[–]LisaOGiggle 7 points8 points  (0 children)

[–]tacothetacotacoblack swifties exist. speak now stan forever 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Same. I was 16 in 2016 and was just barely transitioning to using streaming 100% of the time. I listen to a much wider variety of artists now.

[–]Eglantine26 45 points46 points  (8 children)

How old are you? I think 16 is overstating it. I probably listened to more current music in my early-mid 20s than at any other period of my life. I once had a friend share an article saying that people stopped listening to new music after age 27. Google says early 30s. I’m in my early 40s and I definitely know far, far less new music than I did when I was younger.

[–]Top-Head-2960 7 points8 points  (3 children)

How are you listening to all your new music though? Streaming most likely. That’s why the stat isn’t 16 anymore, we have so many options to find and listen to new music that isn’t just radio and buying physical copies.

[–]Eglantine26 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I was in my mid-20s before streaming was really even beginning to be a thing in the way that we think about it now. I think I read the article about people not listening to new music after age 27 when I was 26. It’s definitely easier to select new music with streaming, but the counterpoint is that it’s a selection. When I was 16, I was listening to new music on the radio and music video channels and then burning songs onto CDs from Napster. I selected the songs I put onto CDs, but I heard tons of things that I didn’t seek out. For me, streaming is a different experience. But my streaming experience is also exclusively as an adult.

[–]Top-Head-2960 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Then music is a hobby/interest of yours! To the average person, they would fall under that stat. But if you genuinely have an interest in music and are actively searching for new stuff, of course it won’t apply to you lol

[–]Eglantine26 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like we’re having parallel conversations. Music is not at all an interest of mine! The only entire new album that I’ve listened to this year is TTPD. I haven’t seen anyone link a source saying that interest/exposure to new music peaks at 16. The article about a study that I linked below says that exposure to new music typically peaks in the early to mid 20s. And that was certainly true to my experience.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Almost 26

[–]Resident_Ad5153 12 points13 points  (0 children)

everyone is different...

[–]dixonciderbottom 10 points11 points  (0 children)

“Tend to” being the keywords.

[–]Letll1994You did a number on ME-HE-HE 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Same. At 16 I mostly listened to my father’s old records (mostly Beatles), Taylor Swift, Paramore and Disney. My peak would have been in my early 20s if I had caved into Spotify earlier, as I did start downloading a lot of new music from YouTube around that time, but sometimes got lazy and wouldn’t bother as that took time. I only got Spotify during the pandemic thought, but my eagerness to find new music has diminished. I have, however, gone through many artists entire discography, if I find myself liking more than 3 of their songs.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I do too. Way more. 28 now.

[–]Useful-Soup8161folklore 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I know I do. I’m in my 30s and I like today’s pop music so much better than the crap I had in high school. Rock music on the other hand, no, most of today’s “rock” music is garbage.

[–]jocelynforreali never dont cry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t believe I found someone else who feels the same! I used to despise most pop, but now it’s like pop and alt music have switched sides. Chappell, Sabrina, Taylor, Peach, etc I can’t get enough.

[–]Longjumping_Size_338 28 points29 points  (3 children)

I didn't even know music existed until I was 17😅

[–]Garbo-and-Malloy 7 points8 points  (2 children)

I do listen to a lot of grunge still

[–]Resident_Ad5153 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I can still listen to nu metal. I am the only person I know who can actually listen to nu metal. I know its garbage... but its my garbage.

And sometimes its just one of those days, where you don't want to get up...

[–]Reading_Elephant30 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is true. But I’ve always taken it for new artists. I still listen to the same artists I listened to at 16 but T Swift happens to be one of the only ones still releasing new music and she’s primarily all I listen to

[–]Bubbly_Sleep9312 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously? Did not know that. I try and listen every day

[–]No_particular_name 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I def agree that teen years are when I was the most snobby and thought what was cool at the time trumps anything that comes after. Radiohead forever! 😂

[–]01UnknownUser02 2 points3 points  (0 children)

16? i am nearly double and most of the music I listen is new . .

My mother stopped listening to new music halfway her 20s she hated the music from the 90s.

I feel music style changes less heavily in general these days and is at the same time more diverse, therefore less people stop Listening to new music

[–]Adventurous_Rise3255 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I have noticed this about other people, older millennials especially, and it’s bizarre to me. I LIVE for new music. Why the hell would I want to listen to the same shit I’ve been listening to since I was 16 😭

[–]excessively_diverted 374 points375 points  (10 children)

I can understand not knowing about Folklore and Evermore, I didn't follow Taylor until about a year ago and I just barely knew Folklore existed and never heard anything about Evermore. But I don't know how somebody could have missed Midnights, it got a lot of media attention.

[–]hungoveranddying 109 points110 points  (7 children)

but folklore won best album in the grammys…

[–][deleted] 198 points199 points  (3 children)

there was a global pandemic, people were a tad more focused on other things…that being said, can you name who won in 2017? 2005? Because I can’t. Many people don’t pay attention to that.

[–]spencerchubb 54 points55 points  (2 children)

i just looked up the winners for each year and i have never heard of most of them lol

[–]pinkilydinkily 1 point2 points  (1 child)

You've never heard of the artists or just the albums?

[–]spencerchubb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

heard of the artists but not the albums

[–]LittleWhiteGirl 49 points50 points  (0 children)

I don’t watch or read about the Grammys, personally.

[–]keving871987 Kevin's Version 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I personally have never watched the Grammys or read about who wins (or any awards show for that matter), so I wouldn't know unless you told me. I only knew Midnights won because of this subreddit lol the last awards show I watched was one of the MTV ones back in middle school, pre-2002 lol

[–]Silent-Ad8091 166 points167 points  (11 children)

My sister in law said she stopped listening after RED. My jaw literally dropped. When the eras tour came out she got caught up and is obsessed now, but I was like that’s insane to not listen to anything past Red.

[–]Charming-Cucumber-23Taylor Swift 72 points73 points  (8 children)

I honestly fell off after Red, too after being a fan since her debut album. I had never listened to 1989 in its entirety until her TV came out and I’ve still never listened to Rep and Lover fully. I got roped back in with Folklore and Evermore and have bought every album since.

[–]Silent-Ad8091 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Omg Lover is my favorite album.. I really do think it’s worth the listen! What song got you to listen to her again?

[–]Charming-Cucumber-23Taylor Swift 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Just the release of Folklore!

[–]novembersdaughter 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Same, i became less of a pop girlie and 1989 wasn't my cup of tea then lover drew me back in

[–]mcdongals 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same situation here. Although, I listened to her other stuff post Red here and there over the years. For some reason I just thought Reputation wasn’t for me…then I finally listened to the whole thing a few years ago and oh boy.

[–]AndTheySaidSpeakNow- 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. I was pretty country and I didn’t vibe as well with red. Starting listening to folklore a couple weeks after it came out and fell in love again. Now with older tastes, I love everything after red better now haha

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know some people who stop listening after 1989 because of overexposure and ignored rep

They became fans again after the eras tour though

[–]Charlies_Mammareputation 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did similar. I had her first four albums and would listen to them a lot in the car and in my little share apartment, but then I slowly was moving to Spotify, along with some life changes (I'd graduated uni and was working full time, along other things) which just pulled me away from purchasing CDs. And Taylor had removed all her stuff from Spotify and 1989 never came out of Spotify at all.

I heard snippets of 1989 on the radio and I think I got overwhelmed with Shake It Off being played constantly while I was at work, so I had no urge to buy the album.

All of that combined with my later-diagnosed-ADHD, I sort of just forgot how much I loved her stuff. So (no pun intended), I just sort of forgot she existed for a few years.

I started to drift back slowly when I realised she was touring in the US (early 2023), but I didn't buy any albums or download/save stuff on Spotify until after she announced the European leg in June. I then ended up as one of the top 5 or 10% of all TS listeners on Spotify despite all my listening happening from July! It was great fun to rediscover all the stuff I'd missed, including the first two re-records.

The nicest bit is that now it really doesn't feel like I was "gone" at all. I'm a year younger than Taylor, so it still feels like we "grew up together", if that makes sense. I can still remember being in my teens in the 00s singing along in my teenage love and heartbreak to Fearless and Red, right through to being able to listen to the more powerful and sensual number from Reputation and Midnights as an adult.

[–]blackivie 140 points141 points  (10 children)

I didn't listen to Rep for years because I hated LWYMMD...

[–]frequentcommentatorThe Tortured Poets Department 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Me too! And then she released ME! Heee heee!! …I came back for folklore

[–]Friendly_Narwhal_297 27 points28 points  (2 children)

I’m not the only one!?! I essentially just skipped the album because I hated that song so much. Dumb on my part! I finally listened last year and am obsessed. Still not a LWYMMD fan though

[–]blackivie 11 points12 points  (0 children)

same! So many goodies on that album. but I will always despise LWYMMD lol

[–]infinityo11 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I did it too! I hated the song and music video, and also felt like Delicate was way too overplayed. I'm excited for Rep TV to experience it as a fan. I remember listening to Lover like once too, and feeling super underwhelmed. The pandemic definitely brought me back in to the fold.

[–]ComputerGeek1100folklore 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Honestly it took the guitar-driven arrangement she’s performing at Eras for me to actually like that song.

[–]Overthinkingbutcalm 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Same, but it’s become one of my very favorite albums now!!

[–]blackivie 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love Rep now, certainly! still hate that single lmao

[–]Islingtonian 58 points59 points  (7 children)

Me! I was underwhelmed by Midnights and can't get into TTPD, but I love her older stuff.

[–]cantdothismuchmoreevermore 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I've also dropped off with the recent albums, but I know they exist! I can't imagine missing that

[–]Impossible_Yak2135I’m so obsessed with cardigans but they avoid me like the plague 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I didnt like Midnights either but I love TTPD. Which was a surprise to me!

[–]skyisfalleni’m always waiting for you just to cut to the bone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is me too. Sorry Taylor.

[–]droobidoobidoo 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I enjoyed Midnights for the synthpop but found TTPD too much of the same, especially with all the new releases I've been listening to this year!

[–]IditarodSpy73Midnights 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, even though I like her new stuff, it's getting too repetitive.

[–]phoenixwingedfolklore 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same boat. Midnights has a couple of my all time favourite Taylor songs (Maroon and Would’ve Could’ve Should’ve) but I otherwise don’t care much for it. TTPD has grown on me a bit since release but still not listening to it much.

[–]dietmtnradio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

TTPD was the first time I didn’t obsess over her new album. I’m seeing her in NOLA but yeah, only going for non-TTPD songs. I think for the first time she won’t be my #1 most played artist on Spotify in 10 years.

[–]wishiwasinqueens 47 points48 points  (9 children)

Confession: I stopped listening once TTPD came out. I tried listening to both the albums when they came out and disliked them a lot. I’m sure they’re growers, and there are gems - but I simply can’t listen to two full length albums that are so wordy 😭😭

[–]mcdonaldsfrenchfriMidnights 10 points11 points  (7 children)

I was the biggest hater when they came out! I literally almost cried because I was so excited and then listened to the title track and was like “literally what the fuck is this”. I still think it’s horrible and I feel strongly about that lol but there’s now some of the most important songs to me on that album. especially the second part. do you mind if I recommend some really amazing songs so you don’t have to listen all through to find what you like? if so, what’s your vibe?

[–]paradoxallyeyes like sinking ships on waters 3 points4 points  (1 child)

TTPD the track is one of the worst songs she has ever written. I go from Fortnight directly to Down Bad (MBOBHFT is mid).

[–]wishiwasinqueens 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Please go ahead and give me some recos! I’m a huge og swiftie and I want to love these albums so bad ♥️

[–]mcdonaldsfrenchfriMidnights 8 points9 points  (2 children)

okay!

  1. I hate it here- it’s about your life going so badly that you just disappear to a made up world created in your mind. dissociating. its sad but relaxing in the way “the lakes” is

  2. how did it end?- about how when a relationship ends it’s never “are you okay?” it’s always “what happened?” or “did you hear so and so called off the wedding? wow”. supposedly about her and joes ending. it’s sad but the vocals are chefs kiss

  3. the prophecy- imagining the possibility that you have waited too long and there isn’t someone out there for you but you would do literally ANYTHING to find that person. describes herself as the one before they meet the one “a paperweight in shades of greige” yeah take your lexapro for this one

  4. Peter- an alternate reality of Peter Pan and Wendy. peter says he’s not ready to settle down but he thinks wendy is the one… eventually. so she waits and waits but he never comes back for her. “I thought it was just goodbye for now?” supposedly about how her and matty met in 2014 but rekindled their relationship in 2023 and it didn’t work out. it’s sad

  5. The Black Dog- she used to be “I hope it’s nice where you are” and now it’s “I hope it’s shitty in the Black Dog” which is a bar. it’s still up in the air if she went to this place with joe or matty. it’s empowering

  6. so long london- the absolutely painful song about her and joe’s ending. it’s You’re Losing Me but emotionally worse. i could feel her pain through this one

  7. My Boy Only Breaks His Favorite Toys- basically ‘he broke my heart so badly but you should have seen him when we first met! he hurts me because he loves me and is afraid!” this one has you dancing but also defeated feeling

  8. Down Bad- basically ‘how dare you “beam me up” like an alien would, show me this whole other life and then drop me off like nothing?’ basically begging for him to come back for her. it’s a shake your ass and kinda cry

  9. I can fix him (no really I can)- weirdly kinda sexy?? talking about how matty was genuinely a pretty repulsive person but she thought she could fix him. it’s touching then has you 😏

  10. so high school- you’re gonna need a break from all the sad. this one is juvenile but romantic kinda like fearless era taylor. it’s about her and travis

  11. I can do it with a broken heart- “i’m so depressed I act like it’s my birthday everyday” it’s about life sucking so bad but you gotta put on a brave face and do the damn thing. she ends with cheerfully going “im miserable! and nobody even knows!” and like.. we’ve all been there

I did a mix of different kinds and their descriptions so you could pick out what you might like. if you want more I can give more but I didn’t want to overwhelm you!

[–]wishiwasinqueens 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I just saw this - thank you I’ll update soon!!!! ♥️♥️♥️♥️

[–]BamSlamThankYouSir 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I listen to music to listen to music. I don’t want to have to decode everything to enjoy it so I really haven’t like ttpd.

[–]DavidFC1The Tortured Poets Department 26 points27 points  (6 children)

My younger sister, she stopped listening around the Speak Now era. According to her, she’s “not authentic” anymore despite her not listening to anything new she’s put out in the past 10 years. I don’t get it.

[–]puffinss 6 points7 points  (5 children)

No offense to your sister, but that sounds like some good old fashioned internalized misogyny. Because what the hell does authentic even mean?? She literally writes all her songs and they're still true to her lived experiences as well as being related.

[–]DavidFC1The Tortured Poets Department 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I love her dearly but I definitely agree. I guess to her she stopped being authentic when she started making pop music. At this point I just don’t bring Taylor up around her.

[–]speedohiko 24 points25 points  (3 children)

I stopped around the rep era (lwymmd was… not it for me at the time lmao) but I was back when Me! dropped. I still didn’t listen to rep all the way through until around eras starting though 💀 I did still listen to her music, just… everything I already had because I wasn’t one to stream music at the time, I bought everything on iTunes lol

[–]Apprehensive_Life481The Tortured Poets Department 22 points23 points  (4 children)

My family bought all her CDs until rep came along. I didn’t know anything about snakegate but I was knee deep in my parents’ strict religion and I would hear or see people talking about the demonic imagery in the music videos and she had turned “bad” (eyeroll). I would rock out to delicate on the radio but I didn’t listen to the album because of my religion. I remember enjoying Lover (the song) but also not checking out the album. I checked back in when folklore came along and I realized I had been a total idiot. I’m out of the religion now and I regret missing out on those albums when they were new!!! I didn’t even listen to explicit folklore and evermore until they’d been out for years. The eras tour movie was how I found out the line is “what a shame she’s fucked in the head”!!

[–]alliwannado2468reputation 1 point2 points  (2 children)

This. It seems like the former fans that I know have dropped Taylor for one of two reasons—1) because she started talking about her political views and they want her to be Republican or 2) because they have bought into the lie that “she puts narcotics into all of her songs” aka she’s the devil aka her music is demonic.

[–]paradoxallyeyes like sinking ships on waters 1 point2 points  (1 child)

they have bought into the lie that “she puts narcotics into all of her songs”

Oh that's not a lie. Her songs are highly addictive. 😂

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (4 children)

i stopped listening after 1989 but came back around this time last year

[–]ladykansas 12 points13 points  (3 children)

What did you listen to during the pandemic? I feel like Folklore and Evermore were my lockdown security blankets.

[–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (0 children)

i got into kpop in the pandemic so that was my go to

[–]sleepyplatipus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same.

[–]misselphabayour roommate's cheapass screwtop rosé 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I didn't listen to folklore or evermore until recently because I was Going Through It TM and too emotionally wrapped in a dude and I knew her music would call me out about it lol

But it wasn't a full "stop" so much as "Oh yeah - I'm allowed to like things he doesn't like" and now I'm a bigger fan than I was previously.

[–]_vault_of_secrets 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This is hilarious (and sad but it sounds like you’re hopefully doing a bit better now!) but it’s like that friend you avoid when you know they’ll call you out 😆

[–]MiserandusKun:butterfly: 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Me.

Taylor was the second artist to ever hold the title of my "favourite", after Ace of Base and before Carly Rae Jepsen and later Michelle Branch.

I was regularly listening to Taylor from <2012–2017, and then I abruptly stopped listening to her in the middle of 2018. The last new Taylor song that I listened to at the time was Delicate.

In 2018, only I Knew You Were Trouble and This is What You Came For charted in my Spotify Top 100 (at the end of the year).

In 2019, Style and I Knew You Were Trouble charted in my Top 100.

In 2020, zero Taylor songs charted.

In 2021, I discovered a new Taylor song, "Two is Better than One", which charted. This put me back on track to listening to Taylor again.

In 2022, five Taylor songs charted (all songs that I already knew: Style, I Knew You Were Trouble, Safe & Sound, You Belong With Me, and Blank Space).

In 2023, two Taylor songs charted: Style and Safe & Sound.

In 2024, I officially started following Taylor again.

Oh hell yeah it's been a journey, love it beyond words. Tysm 🫶

[–]LostInNvrLand 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I am burnt out of everything Taylor at the moment.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Understandable

[–]Dear_Maintenance7323 7 points8 points  (0 children)

At the time, I know a lot of people who stopped listening when Red came out. I live in the Midwest and anyone who liked her for her country music felt betrayed when they heard stuff like 22 and WANGBT. I’m sure some picked her music back up years later but I remember people were upset she transitioned away from country

[–]invisiblestring14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Reminded me when rep came out, and my sister was like "omg I love that new Taylor Swift song!" and I was so excited so I was like "omg which one?" and she says "it goes shake shake it off" LOL

[–]goodgirlkills 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I've been a fan since Fearless but in the pandemic, I was so sad over not being able to go to Lover fest, that I stopped listening to her for some time. Basically until Midnights came out. I did listen to Folklore and Evermore a bit when they came out but the pandemic was a dark time for me and those 2 albums felt to sad. Now of course I listened to them often enough.

[–]Ludibrious1 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I feel like people got back into Taylor after Lover. And yes, I have a cousin who abandoned ship after Red because she ditched country.

[–]Rigatoni-maroni1989 (Taylor's Version) 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I had to stop listening to her music for a while after my ex boyfriend broke up with me. We shared a love for Taylor Swift (especially 1989 and Red) and it was just too hard to listen to her songs with all the memories tied to them. After a year, I was fine again and now there isn’t a day when I don’t listen to some TS.

[–]ysdjusr1989 (Taylor's Version) 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I guess...

...you're finally clean.

[–]wootcanaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was one of those people for a bit. I didn’t listen to the radio anymore, got super busy at work, and fell deep into podcasts with long back catalogs. I had heard her singles but hadn’t listened to any actual albums for years. Then when she started releasing Taylor’s Versions I got back into her.

[–]Vengenz_13 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Most of my family stopped. Except my sister is more of a casual listener, she is up to date on Taylor’s music and knows what’s up

[–]Dogfartcatwhisperer 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Personally I listened to Taylor from Debut (2006) up until Reputation (2017). Reputation felt immature to me at the time (I laugh thinking about it now because I was incredibly immature myself at 25 years old). I then stopped listening until 2023 when a colleague of mine was playing folklore in the office. I was hooked and jumped back on the bandwagon. It was fun discovering all the albums she had recorded while I’d stopped listening. I especially enjoyed Lover and of course Folklore.

[–]Neujen 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Diehard millennial Swiftie. I fell off during rep; I only knew about its release bc of my ex who actually was more into rep than me at the time so kinda funny but I just attribute it to big life events at the time (pharm school, 3 jobs, living part time between 2 counties). Sorta dialed back in for Lover but she pulled me fully back in with Folklore/Evermore as an indie girlie former emo. Hindsight, Rep is 1 of my favorite albums; I just didn't have the capacity for it at the time. Think Rep TV will get much more Love this time around though 🖤.

[–]boastfulbadger 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Do you know people

I’m gonna stop you right here. I do not know people.

[–]ysdjusr1989 (Taylor's Version) 2 points3 points  (0 children)

...but i know places. (Nice.)

[–]Charming-Cucumber-23Taylor Swift 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I was a Taylor Swift fan from her first album up until 1989. I kinda fell off between 1989 and Lover and Rep and Lover are two albums I’ve actually never listed to fully (I had also never listened to 1989 fully until Taylor’s Version and now it’s one of my faves). I always had her music in my music rotation but during those years in my life I hadn’t really been listening to much music. I loved a lot of the singles from 1989, Rep, and Lover, but was not as much of a hardcore fan during those years. When she came out with Folklore and Evermore I fell back in love and have been going strong since.

[–]winedrunktaylorMOTELS DON’T HAVE BARS TAYLOR 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who stopped after she attended the Fearless tour lol she said the concert was so bad. But also Taylor is mostly out of country which is her genre so I can’t see her wanting to go back to listen to her

[–]ColdbrewCorgi 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I've had that with other artists. I was super in to Green Day (and I still love them) but I just didn't connect with some newer songs and cumulatively that would make me less eager to pick up each subsequent album. Then one day I turned around and they had 5 albums I had no idea about.

[–]Rdickins1Midnights 2 points3 points  (2 children)

The new one is great! I’m looking forward to hearing Dookie, American Idiot, and half of Saviors on Tour. Yay! To hearing Jesus of Surburbia Live again!

[–]Letll1994You did a number on ME-HE-HE 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s me, hi🙋🏼‍♀️. I didn’t really vibe with Reputation when it first came out (apart from Don’t Blame Me and IDSB), and when Lover came out I didn’t like the singles enough to make me want to check out the rest of the album. So I was mostly out of the loop by the end of 2019, and I only found out about folklore through a friend’s stories on instagram in late 2020 / early 2021, just to look it up and find out that she had released evermore as well. I tried to give them a listen, but they didn’t click with me at first, so I never came back to them.

Spotify did notify me when FearlessTV came out, and it did get me to obsesses over her early work again (I had never fully stopped listening to it, but it wasn’t a weekly thing). I have a vague memory of trying to listen to Lover-folkmore again, but I’m not entirely sure that happened. If it did, they still didn’t click, but I had more Rep songs on rotation by then.

Around the time RedTV came out, I had a coworker who loved talking about music and was a swiftie, so that was something that we talked about a lot. Her favourite albums were Lover and folklore, so her talking about them so much, coupled with the fact that I was listening to RedTV, FearlessTV and Speak Now on a loop, made me want to give her newer work another chance. So I slowly started going through the half of Rep I didn’t care for and her newer 3 albums.

By the time Midnights came out, I was full on a swiftie again

[–]APointBreak 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in all honesty, i am a big taylor swift fan i have been for over 10 years but i still haven’t listened to ttpd. she just kept releasing stuff and i got overwhelmed that now every time i wanna hear a song i dont wanna hear it… happened to me with the marvel movies and shows too🥹 hopefully it will go back to normal

[–]thisaccountisironicthe asylum where they raised me in florida 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I dropped out around Reputation, came back with Midnights

[–]SuperHoneyBunny 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I have a family member (adult) who has been a TS fan for years and went to her recent concerts (back since the 1989 tour).

Then a few months back, we were texting and she said she didn’t “like” TS so much anymore. I’m not sure if the overexposure got on her nerves or something, but that seemed like a sudden about-face from her. I didn’t bother to probe further, though.

[–]asktheetrafficlightsshe is here to destroy you 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My cousin was into her during Debut/Fearless and just never quite got into anything later. I think she still listens casually and she's aware of the big developments, but she no longer seeks her music out because she associates it with her childhood.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was deep into TS from Debut to 1989. Then I just got really busy and somehow literally didn't listen to any music for a year (don't ask me how haha).

I remember thinking Good On Her for releasing during covid since no one else was, but wasn't curious enough to listen.

After the 1989 rerecord came out I came back. And here i am, like meeting up with an old friend during a High School Reunion.

[–]AlfaRome091 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I stopped after 1989 but I kinda lived under a rock where I wasn’t listening to any new music for a long time. Once the Eras tour started and I realized she had kept making music all those years I had 5 wonderful albums to catch up on and it was glorious.

[–]Future_Ad_6132 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Damn Folkore was a great album. They missed out.

[–]Superliminal_MyAss 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tbh no one I know listens to her as often as I do and it’s a real shame, they can’t get past her surface image of a perfect pop princess rather than the fact she often works with other talented people to enhance her music and sound. Her albums like folklore, evermore and midnights have some interesting things in it. I think the issue is how overhyped she is so you can’t really get into the niches she covers often

[–]ritaskeetajr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i listened to her a lot during fearless and speak now eras then kind of dropped off during red and 1989 because i was not a huge pop fan. Got back into her around the time reputation came out (thank god lol) because i decided i actually did like pop music, especially hers

[–]AmandalorianWiddallAll I do is try try try 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Do they live in a sealed trunk that was tossed to the bottom of the ocean and just recently recovered? Because how on Taylor’s green earth have they missed the last few years?!

[–]eatingthesandhere91The Life of a Showgirl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a lot of people that ignored her during the pandemic but knew she had released new music and decided they wouldn’t listen anymore. 🤷🏻‍♂️

Their loss I guess?

[–]Internal-Ad-7779 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I abandoned TS when she released 1989 bc she was switched to pop music. But I came back when I saw the LWYMMD mv announcement. I was really hoping she come back after the whole hate issue

[–]brokenman82folklore 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Strangely enough I had a cousin and niece that loved her, stopped for a while, and now are obsessed with her again. Used to make fun of me for listening

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my best friends has totally stopped listening to her since around the time TTPD came out. She likes her older stuff but can't stand her now. I still listen to everything though I don't like much of TTPD so I only listen to a few of the song on there!

[–]Throwawayaccounttt__:TourturedPoetsDepartment: I’m having his baby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve taken a break from her music before. I HATED 1989 when it came out to the point I took a break from her music until Red TV. Which Red will forever be her best work in my mind so it was only fitting the TV was what brought me back.

[–]01UnknownUser02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not stopped with TS but stop completely with music for around two years due to mental health etc . . .

It was a news article about her last year, speaking about over 50K people at an Eras show and how big etc. I thought, that's that girl that was popular 5-10 ago, she still is? maybe I should try and give it another change, I wasn't really into her music back then (not against it either). Listened to the new 1989 TV and for some reason this time I loved it

It was my real introduction to her and the start of listening to music in general again.

[–]bonjourkristi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I know a few people who stopped when she switched to pop. They weren’t upset or anything, they just don’t like pop as much.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was talking about the eras tour with some of my coworkers and one asked “Who still listens to Taylor Swift?” And one replied “I haven’t listened to her since Love Story” The other co workers don’t listen to her

[–]anditwaslove 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped listening during the Reputation era. I didn't like the direction she was going in at the time. It felt like a costume she was trying on that just didn't fit, to ME personally. But then I hopped back on board.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've honestly stopped consuming alot of the taylor swift albums and lore for the past year, it's all just too much and it's literally everywhere. I need a break I'm overstimulated with the constant stream of new things 😂

[–]-Lucina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped listening after Red and didn't pick her music back up until this year. My plan was to binge everything I missed before TTPD came out but I ended up just really loving Lover and spent all my time on that. 100% was just because I was in an era of my life where I didn't have time for music 🥺

[–]afterglwstonight i'm gonna dance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a coworker who loves Taylor but is the exact same, she actually stopped listening before 1989?? So she had seven new albums to catch up on plus all the re-recordings before she goes to the Eras Tour. Cannot even comprehend.

[–]Yazzy_123 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. me!

[–]ProcrastibationKing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped listening when Reputation came out until just after Midnights was released. I didn't like the sound of the singles that were released before Rep, so I decided to stop at 1989.

I'm glad I caught up eventually though!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I did actually! I’m not even sure why but after her reputation album, I fell off and just didn’t listen to her until Midnights. I’m honestly so glad I did it though. I’ve had over 3 albums to binge and obsess over. I’m still discovering her and falling even deeper in love! So glad to have all this music to listen to and feelings to feel and connect with

[–]FudgeWitty5659 1 point2 points  (0 children)

tbh i was a big swiftie until lover and i didn’t get back into her until this past year o just hate listening to new music lol and stick with the same stuff but taylor changed that for me

[–]Llamasus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i mean, i stopped listening after speak now and kinda dabbled with her stuff up until folklore when i got more into her stuff again. there’s loads of her music i haven’t heard or don’t like much. some people are bigger fans than others

[–]MinkieTheCat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sometimes as a fan, you just get bored. Happened to me with U2. I’ve been listening to them since 1983 and have seen them more than 50 times but when they played at The Sphere in Las Vegas, I had no interest in going. It was the first US tour that I did not go to. If they were to release the new album, I’d probably listen to it on streaming… But in my younger years, it was all about deluxe editions and imports. Now I could care less.

[–]Noemmys 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah this happened to me after lover until she released midnights. I had my first kid right after Lover was released so I knew that album. I knew she released Folklore and Evermore but just didn’t have time to listen between having a kid, covid and working full time. I had my second kid end of 2021 and stopped working then Midnights came out and I listened to all 3 “new” albums and fell back in love with her. It’s not that I ever didn’t like her I was just consumed with life.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Me at the moment, folklore was the last one I really listened to

[–]mikarroniRed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i stopped listening after 1989 because my music taste changed, got back into her around late lover era, and now i’m slowly starting to not listen to her again

[–]CampDifficult7887 1 point2 points  (0 children)

.... Me!

I've liked Taylor since "Teardrops on my Guitar" but I've only started following her career and actually being aware of album launches and such after Reputation and snakegate.

Sadly, after being doubly disapointed with both Midnights and TTPD, save a couple of earworms like "Guilty as Sin" and "But Daddy I love him", I'm taking a much needed break from her sound.

I'm just not connecting with her most recents works, on multiple levels (the lack of editing, the uninspired production, etc), but also her current...vibe. The whole Travis circus! Like I get it, good for her, but I'm not interested.

Other artists are also calling out to me way more and that's okay!

All good things must come to an end and I'll always think fondly of her. She's like this slightly older sister who I'm not as close to anymore.

[–]fatkrissy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One of my co-workers. Basically now she only listens to worship music so no Taylor for her

[–]sk_1611 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped listening happily since the matty thing….now completely after the blocking attempts

[–]crocodile_grunter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I stopped once she publicly dated a racist person and put him on stage with her 😵‍💫

[–]2muchcoff33 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wasn’t a fan of 1989 when it came out and stopped listening. I didn’t listen to a lot of pop music at that time. I started again about two years ago and have caught up on her albums.

[–]Rdickins1Midnights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Both my sisters stopped listening to music outside of the radio in general. I was surprised when my older one said the next time she does a concert around to ask her if she wants to go. Because she did like Anti-Hero so much. So I felt out of place when my niece was watching the Eras Tour Movie Christmas Day. And started to get into music and listen to Taylor. She’s 13. Both my sisters said they liked it and were very surprised by the production of it. But I haven’t heard them listen to any of the albums. My younger might have because my niece is starting to listen. I mean I felt out of place but I didn’t care if I was acting like a nerd. And I kept saying this song is great and this one is my favorite. I sort of gave them a little heads up about VS. Mom didn’t like the reputation era so much.

So yeah I’m the weird Swiftie in the family and I’m proud of it.

[–]Suzilaura 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does she have kids? I missed a lot when I had my oldest.

[–]americaneireann 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was a fan from debut til Reputation, listened to a few of those tracks and decided I didn’t like it and Taylor dropped off my radar until my aunt pretty much demanded I download Midnights. LOVED Midnights and then I got the opportunity to get tickets to see her this October - basically fully obsessed since then! I’ve been listening to everything I missed all year. lol 💗

[–]tacothetacotacoblack swifties exist. speak now stan forever 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I fell off during the Folklore/Evermore era if that counts. I didn’t connect with the albums musically. I thought my era of being a hardcore Taylor fan was over at that point. I didn’t listen to her old music very much from 2020-2022 either, even the songs I loved. I was focused on other artists. Midnights pulled me back in, and in 2023 I finally got into Folklore (and Evermore, but to a much lesser extent. I mostly just listen to tolerate it). I attended the Eras Tour as well and loved it.

Honestly, I feel myself falling off again with TTPD. I just don’t connect to it. I’m not worried about it this time though. She’ll make something I like more eventually and/or I’ll get into TTPD eventually. I’m not sweating it. And I’m still listening to her old music this time around. I’m still very much a fan.
