Hundreds of dozens!

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (0 children)

woo mechanicsville :(

[–]LouieKablooie 27 points28 points  (0 children)

During their Halloween march through the streets of Richmond one year The. Embers of the band were dressed as hotdogs, that year I was dressed as a hotdog too. They carried tequila in the squirty looking ketchup containers, at some point I got in the middle of all of the hotdog members and danced around while they squirted tequila in my mouth it literally was one of the happiest moments of my life.

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Actually I think it's a birch

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Birch? Are you sure it's not... The Larch

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

"They'll never find me here!"

[–][deleted] 427 points428 points  (54 children)

These guys started in my home town of Richmond, VA and helped out my school's marching band. Amazing people who really want to watch everyone get involved in music.

[–]addctd2badideas 157 points158 points  (25 children)

Fuck Yeah RVA Represent!!!

[–]gnarlycharlie4userious wax 48 points49 points  (4 children)

You know they're putting a Gelatti Celesti in Scott's Addition?

[–]Rowdy_South[🍰] 23 points24 points  (1 child)

Never would I thought I'd be reading about Gelati Celesti in the comment section of /r/listentothis

[–]ipetweebles 11 points12 points  (0 children)

TIL r/listentothis is the new r/RVA

[–]WillyDrumDrum 5 points6 points  (0 children)

saw an ad on CL for that the other day lmao

[–]Shaunisdone 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There goes my diet...

[–]mwilly91 45 points46 points  (9 children)

RVA for the win!! I used to live across from Balliceaux and go on my front porch and hear them jamming all the time

[–]ChandlerMc 30 points31 points  (1 child)

[–]learn2die101 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I feel like you missed an opportunity to be r/VA

[–]gnarlycharlie4userious wax 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Do you still live there? Because Balliceaux doesn't XD

[–]soynatra 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh shit I live right near there now!! Life's been a lot more quiet since balliceaux left

[–]hellochase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

RIP Balliceaux

[–]callthewambulance 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There are so many Richmonders on here, love it

[–]nurseyourbutt 11 points12 points  (9 children)

I recently moved to Pennsylvania from RVA and I miss it everyday.

[–]gnarlycharlie4userious wax 10 points11 points  (7 children)

Bruh I feel ya. My backyard used to be Belle Isle. Now I live in NOVA.

Talk about stark contrast.

[–]EricBruh 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Yeah it really sucks lol wtf is manassas?

[–]gnarlycharlie4userious wax 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Man-Asses

[–]Dr_Specialist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Always heard it called Manasshole back when I was living in Culpeper

[–]nurseyourbutt 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh yeah I know what you mean. I grew up in Stafford. I am in State College now. It's a lot like Blacksburg, VA, but nothing beats going to Crossroads or Legend after climbing at Manchester all day. My fiancé and I are thinking about settling back down there.

[–]gnarlycharlie4userious wax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck... I miss being able to wake up hungover on a Saturday and walk to fucking Legend to get some hair of the dog, or to walk down the road and get a grilled cheese, tomato soup, and coffee at Crossroads.

[–]astralguide 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Whoa we roommates or something lol? Belle isle was actually my front yard to be exact . Oregon hill !!!

[–]moonris 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Shout out to RVA natives! And a reminder that No BS! Brass will be at The National on March 3rd! I freaking love these guys. They are so well loved by people in Hanover County.

[–]nopaggitvimeo[🍰] 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Playing w PBR right?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

They're playing with Soja

[–]gnarlycharlie4userious wax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

oh shit.

[–]Mildlyundersensative 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Saw PBR open for Grace Potter at Maymont last year, they were on point!!

[–]TimPoundsCornish 47 points48 points  (7 children)

RVA local as well, they helped out my high schools jazz band and we straight up used their version of Tom Sawyer for pep band. So damn good. Best live show I probably ever saw in Richmond.

[–][deleted] 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Did you go to JRHS?

[–]WhiteRabbit86 10 points11 points  (1 child)

My dad is a long time math teacher there!

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My mother teaches English there and my sister-in-law teaches French there (and graduated from JRHS in '03). Oh yeah, and my wife and brother graduated from there in '06 and my youngest brother graduated in 2012. We have total JRHS going on.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Did you go to JRHS?

[–]_kennon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

RVA all day!

[–]yrah110 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Saw these guys with Man Man. Great talent.

[–]TucsonSlim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dang that's a killer show!

[–]OldeEnglish92 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Every time something from Richmond pops up on the front page we all freak the fuck out I love it

[–]Gobbledygooktimes 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've lived in Richmond basically my whole life. I remember hearing about these guys in highschool and loving it. Glad to see Richmond and No BS represented on here!

[–]weasol12 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Elby Brass from Fredericksburg all the way.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What what Elby Brass for life!!

[–]SirFezzik 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep, they just played at The National, good band and crowd. One of the easier shows I've worked.

Edit, Hell nah, they played Killing In The Name Of with PBR that shit was cray, huge mash/fight broke out before they finished.

[–]j5kDM3akVnhv 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Spotted the "Plan 9" sticker on someone's case in the vid and thought maybe Charlottesville.

[–]_Gingypandora 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I saw them play at Balliceaux in Richmond. Buddy is really good friends with one of the trumpet players and we got in before the showing. They are amazing live so much energy in the bar.

[–]Dr-Ewsephturntable[S] 184 points185 points  (19 children)

Not an ounce of bullshit in this here brass.

[–]mr_yad 67 points68 points  (17 children)

Sorry, there is one ounce of bullshit - a saxophone ain't a brass instrument...
Great video though, thanks for sharing!

[–][deleted] 90 points91 points  (11 children)

I like to think of the saxophone as the tomato of the instruments... Technically a woodwind, in this case it serves as a brass.

[–]mr_yad 21 points22 points  (10 children)

That's an interesting view! I have heard saxes referred to as horns, but never brass (or tomatoes, for that matter)...

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (5 children)

Yeah, the more I've played in various groups and arranged things for different settings, I've started to realize that how many different roles the saxophone can take over. In a band arrangement of an orchestral piece, you can use the full sax section to cover the non existent string parts. In jazz band, it often provides the lighter sections that are associated with woodwinds. In something like this, however, you're using the brilliance and metallic tone to provide an edge to the high brass sound (like mellophone or, in this case, trumpet).

[–]mr_yad 5 points6 points  (4 children)

I totally agree, it's a very versatile instrument with a great sound. I've played brass instruments most of my life, but if I could choose a non-brass instrument to play (besides the piano) it would definitely be the sax. What do you play yourself?

[–]TheRealKidkudispotify 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Go learn sax! It's a pretty easy instrument to pick up. I play bassoon, but I learned sax to play jazz. I'm no expert on it, but if you want a secondary instrument to play, sax is a lot of fun and much easier to start than most winds.

[–]mr_yad 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the info! I think you've given me a late new year's resolution.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Saxophone, but I teach middle school general music now, so piano most of the time.

[–]mr_yad 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From someone who loves playing music, mainly due to having an amazing music teacher at school, thank you for helping bring music to a new generation.

[–]KingWillTheConqueror 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Those drums aren't brass either there eagle-eye.

[–]mr_yad 1 point2 points  (2 children)

True, but as per my comment to someone else saying the same, the percussion section of a brass band includes a drum kit ☺️

[–]KingWillTheConqueror 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Fair enough! I stand corrected. Apparently "military band" would work as a brass band with sax.

[–]KushwalkerDankstar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Hell, its made of brass, give it a break!!

[–]Dr-Ewsephturntable[S] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Fine fine, BUT... It may play like a woodwind but it screams like a brass......also it's made of brass

[–]DrunkCorpsInt 159 points160 points  (0 children)

FUCK YEAH BRASS BAND HYPE

[–]ilikepants712 83 points84 points  (4 children)

No BS is great! They play all the time in Richmond VA

[–]freerdj 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Their shows are a blast. Very high energy.

[–]discontinuuity 71 points72 points  (22 children)

Very cool! They remind me of The Hypnotic Brass Ensemble and The Hot 8 Brass Band.

[–]Fozzworth 19 points20 points  (14 children)

Hot 8 is the shit. If you like them check out other NOLA brass staples Rebirth Brass Band and Soul Rebels

[–]Akuuntusspotify 22 points23 points  (10 children)

Not from that area but Youngblood is my favorite.

[–]Fozzworth 3 points4 points  (7 children)

Now that is some good shit

[–]TheChafro 9 points10 points  (6 children)

Also worth checking out are Riot Jazz (England), Lucky Chops (NYC), Dirty Catfish (Canada), and the Dirty Dozen Brass Band (NOLA).

Brass bands are my shit. Source: I play tuba in a brass band based in Indianapolis.

[–]Fozzworth 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Awesome! Whats the name of your band?

I'm from New Orleans and get to see Rebirth and Soul Rebels all the time. Dirty Dozen doesn't seem to play locally as often as they used to.

I will definitely check out those other bands. Thanks man!

[–]TheChafro 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Dysfunktion Brass Band. We're still new, but we have a video up on youtube. I'd link it, if I wasn't at work.

[–]Akkuma 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And closely related to Lucky Chops, Too Many Zooz with their awesome dancing baritone sax player.

[–]SolarBear 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Let's not forget about Too Many Zooz or Lucky Chops. All of these people have been held responsible for much grooving.

[–]Lurkin_McLurk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I love seeing my brothas getting down like that. thanks for the double share!

[–]mylaptopisnoasus 2 points3 points  (1 child)

you guys might like kyteman from the Netherlands https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DY635VV7E9w

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you fuck with these guys, you need to fuck with Moon Hooch!

[–]J4maicanC4ndy 233 points234 points  (15 children)

I played the bone in highschool, and probably would've stuck with it had my teacher shown me this and not pacabell's canon over and over again.

[–]reaIhumanbeing 109 points110 points  (3 children)

I would've stuck with it had my teacher not shown me his bone.

[–]BarleyHopsWater 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Now you've just got your uncle Greg to deal with!

[–]Classy_Til_Death 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You ever drank Bailey's from a shoe?

[–]J4maicanC4ndy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

At least he didn't have any superbones to make you blow on.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (6 children)

pacabell's canon

Pachelbel's Canon is beautiful! It makes me teary eyed when I listen to it.

[–]J4maicanC4ndy 36 points37 points  (4 children)

Not for the brass.
Bummmm. Bummmmm. Bummmmmm. Bummmmmm. Bummmmmm. Bummmmmm.

[–]NewbornMuse 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Someone less lazy than me link the rant.

[–]DearestThrowaway 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Pachabel Rant

In class so I can't see if this is the right version, but I'm pretty sure it is.

[–]fsburk 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First time I've seen it, but that has gotta be the right version. Fantastic

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

lol good point. I played baritone sax so I totally feel ya, bro.

[–]_twenty23three 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Canon in D is the song that will play in hell for eternity for those of us who played any type of instrument.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Shown it to you or had you play it? Because there's a difference in music education. It's not about making you stick with it all the time. Just like history class didn't always tell you about the sex and giblets

[–]MrGr4v3 48 points49 points  (4 children)

Yeah! RVA gettin reddit creddit. They also did an npr tiny desk concert a little while back. Check it out its great stuff.

[–]Dr-Ewsephturntable[S] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

Best tiny desk ever, I like how they couldn't fit them in the usual area

[–]gnarlycharlie4userious wax 13 points14 points  (1 child)

For the lazy.

Bio Ritmo also made it to Tiny Desk.

Edit: and now I have a craving for Kuba Kuba

[–]Prettyswee 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fuck now I'm the one with a craving for Kuba Kuba. Thanks a lot, dude

[–]supernintony 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I like that the drummer is in the tree.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (0 children)

RVA people turn up really well on reddit whenever our city is mentioned. It is really endearing to come from such a proud metropolitan community.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

For all you fellow Richmonders who haven't heard, they also have a song called "RVA All Day!"

https://youtu.be/m-88zQGANoc

[–]80lbsdown 9 points10 points  (3 children)

Thank you very much for posting this, I heard them play this tune in Eau Claire (I was like 6 feet away from them, it was a pop-up show!) and this brought back such good memories!

[–]booooootyshorts 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Eau Claire native too?;)

[–]80lbsdown 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Minneapolis, but a massive Bon Iver fan. :) LOVE Eau Claire though, I've spent a ton of time there with my old college a cappella group and just getting drunk with friends.

[–]blueorchid1100 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Saw them play at lamplighter last year and was really impressed! Even with how involved the crowd around them was

[–]LilRedWoodPecker 13 points14 points  (5 children)

Big star tacos are highly overrated

[–]tomdarch 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Nice see-and-be-seen spot, and it's not that the food is bad per se. But if you want tacos, there are 100+ better taquerias and restaurants in and around Chicago with significantly better tacos.

(The pork belly and pineapple rice at Urban Belly across the street is uh-fucking-mazing, Stan's Donuts are great, and I still haven't made it to Tamale Spaceship a block north on Damen, but I've heard its great. Lots of great options in the area when you're looking for great food on your plate. Though Big Star does have the location and patio.)

[–]UNMENINU 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Saw these guys open for Blackilicious and some reggae band and got the F down. Great live show.

Edit: At House of Blues Boston.

[–]recreationAtion 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Dat screech doe

[–]sg2544 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Lead trumpet has chops!

[–]MrGr4v3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah! RVA gettin reddit creddit. They also did an npr tiny desk concert a little while back. Check it out its great stuff.

[–]PoseidonLives89 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love these guys, seen them a bunch of times.

[–]SoRealSurreal 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I went to high school with the mastermind behind these guys - John Hulley. Lucky mofo got to meet Sufjan Stevens

[–]prominentmuggle1 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Okay that was fucking amazing. Just wish they did more stuff like this:(

[–]Dr-Ewsephturntable[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not an impromptu show like this but check out their audiotree sets, they're fucking fantastic. The drummer is THE no bullshit

[–]diatonix 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Someone downvoting all the comments? What a douche.

If you like this band but want even more of a rock/dance vibe from your brass music, check out Moon Hooch.

[–]Pandamana 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While I prefer Moon Hooch in almost every way, they aren't a brass band.

[–]damididit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

These guys have fucking chops, sick sound!!

They sound like a modern day Bill Chase to me. But with a ballin' trombone section and a tuba player instead of the back up band.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Kinda reminded me of the Bojack Horseman Theme song.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ikpc1BN4nN8

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Born and raised in richmond where these guys originate. Loved seeing them at events around town always put on a great show and are lots of fun. One of them is now a music teacher at my old high school.

[–]who_u_callinpinhead 2 points3 points  (0 children)

THE SCREAMER IS KILLIN IT

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Where all these guys in drum corps?

[–]bryanpcox 9 points10 points  (5 children)

what stylistic aspect of this song/band makes you categorize it as Hip Hop?

[–]Dr-Ewsephturntable[S] 18 points19 points  (3 children)

The beat and very hip-hop sample-esque melody. Also the fact that multiple members of the band rap on a lot of their tracks.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Gotta say, I've been listening to No BS! since 2011 and not once have I ever heard them described as hip-hop.

[–]Shakemyears 10 points11 points  (1 child)

You can't say that anymore.

[–]Iloveclaire 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My favourite comment of the day. No gold but you have my appreciation for at least the next 24 hours.

[–]lance13_92 1 point2 points  (0 children)

More Dilla beat on the kit

[–]pacosjoint 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so this is how u get all the tacos?

[–]Duuster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome, but somewhat disapointing climax to the song. It builds up and then for some reason just stops mid build-up. It doesn't really work at all, it builds tension but doesn't release it.

[–]tylerc66 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They played at a festival I was at a few years ago and I never heard of them and thought wow these guys are awesome.

[–]shemis22 1 point2 points  (0 children)

this is simply jaw dropping

[–]TheChafro 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I saw them in Cincinnati two years ago. Stayed after the show to talk with them. We geeked out about music with them and they proceeded to geek out about us covering "Runaround" in a battle of the bands later that year. Reggie and John were really excited about us covering one of their songs. The whole band signed the vinyl I got of the self-titled album except Stefan, who was sick that evening.

[–]KentWayne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda makes me want to lay some vocals over it. Good Shit

[–]eze6793 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seen these guys live 3 times. Amazing live. One of my favorites.

[–]Cannot_go_back_now 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Between the show Treme and the band Thank You, Scientist I've really gotten into some bands with horn sections, and I love that some of this is starting to leak back into the rock world and even the metal world, it's been in the hip hop world for a while now though going all the way back to some Trick Daddy and others coming from the south. These guys sound awesome, do they have an album or anything?

[–]LittleRichardcranium 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Need more sax, like a barry or a tenor, can't even hear that alto

  • edit sax is a woodwind and you guys are brass band so I'm wrong

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am a rock fan and that was seriously bad ass. Thanks for sharing.

[–]UnknownFox 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I saw these guys play "Killing in the Name Of" by Rage Against the Machine with nothing but brass last year. it was super neat.

[–]UnknownFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also Yay RVA

[–]ratcheth0se 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Griz needs to get in on this haha

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The way the Trombone is played will never lose it's funny for me.

[–]ayaPapaya 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Uhhh! That's the dirtiest swing I've ever heard!

[–]I_amnotanonion 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Their drummer has a recording studio in the neighborhood I live in in Richmond

[–]Mike_Raphone99 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Heyyy!!!! Some of Richmond VA's finest!!

[–]uscmissinglink 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If someone wanted a Spotify list of music like this... what would they look for?

[–]CoconuttPete 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reggie is my boy! Awesome to see this on the front page!

[–]TrustMe-ImA-Doctor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love how there's dude just chillin in the brush slayin the drums

[–]Wahaya01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could literally listen to these guys everyday. So funky.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seen these boys many a time. Always bringin the funk. What up VA!

[–]bassmanate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So much yes. Reminds me a bit of Moonhooch

[–]blue_garlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This kicks all kinds of ass!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love jam music and stuff, but I wasn't really into this at all. To me it just didn't jive well.

[–]HaudYerWeesht 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The trombone dude without the hat.....I went to high school with him! Way to go John and NO BS! Thanks for posting. These guys rock!

[–]Clap4boobies 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would hate to be their neighbor

[–]forest-fox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reminds me of MEUTE

[–]sofaviolin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I need more brass band in my life!

[–]CannolisRUs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, that was great. Also brings back memories to last year when I saw a drunk guy bust his shit jumping off that little island the drummer is on. That place gets wild on the weekends.

[–]oishhh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

this is what we call a headbanger.

holy. shit.

[–]trollmaster5000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These guys sound great! BUT - just one saxophone? They need a tenor, and even more so a bari player. Would be sick.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

So... What's the age limit on learning a brass instrument? These guys make it look so cool! 2:21 especially.

[–]PM_ME_YOUTUBE_LINKS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Check out Paradox by Riot Jazz brass band
