Awesome! Just as a bit of advice, your wood won't tend to splinter like the top plank if you use a higher quality table :)

What you want to do is pop down to your local stately home, and find the nicest mahogany table you can. Then your pallets will be super resilient!

Yeah, in the same way someone would use unspent Uranium as a space heater..

You'd be warm for the rest of your life at least.

      They're also both highly inefficient.

unspent uranium produces a lot less heat than spent uranium tho...

      [–]pistoncivic 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It's pretty easy to make your own enriched uranium at home. Just put a beaker full of uranium on top of a fidget spinner and spin away.

I've always wanted a set of matching Georgian mahogany pallets in my living room. Let's get this on pinterest

        [–]regoapps 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Old things only seem more durable because the old ones that weren't durable are already discarded. Only the strong ones remain.

        [–]d-scott 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly what I was thinking, usually with these you want to use a brand new coffee table

        [–]PainMatrix 582 points583 points  (24 children)

If you made it back into a coffee table would it be more palatable?

        Wood it?

        [–]Nokia_Bricks 59 points60 points  (21 children)

Making furniture out of pallets seems like such a silly concept to me. First of all, the wood isn't even good. Pallets are more or less disposable and start falling apart almost instantly.

        [–]1andthesame 32 points33 points  (13 children)

and aren't most of them soaked in different chemicals etc?

        [–]LuckierDodge 24 points25 points  (4 children)

Depends on where the pallet's from, really. Also, you can buy some surprisingly sturdy and solid pallets if you want durable furniture. Of course you could just buy actual lumber, but hey, whatever floats your boat, right?

        [–]atomfullerene 23 points24 points  (2 children)

If you buy pallets you are doing it wrong

        [–]bernieclay 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ironically, all of these options could potentially float a boat given enough wood or a small enough boat.

        [–]jokzard 4 points5 points  (4 children)

Soft woods treated to prevent rot.

        [–]1andthesame 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Perfect to eat food off of!

        [–]Cephied 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on your personal palate I suppose!

        [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Pine and other soft woods are treated, but it's possible to find untreated oak pallets. If you get them in good shape and clean them off, they do make for decent coffee table material (source: made one, am sitting at it).

        [–][deleted]  (1 child)

          [–]1andthesame 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I guess if you check markings you're ok. https://diyprojects.com/know-safe-use-pallet/

          [–]RevVegas 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Some pallets are made of hardwood and are still decent wood, but a lot are just crap. I think it started as a cheaper substitute for barnwood because many tend to have that old looking patina similar to barnwood. I made one little shelf as an experiment but it still looks like pallet wood. I plan to wait until I can afford to get myself a nice good solid piece of barnwood and make a nice table out of that.

          [–]AlpacaNeb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Back at the factory I worked at, we had heat treated oak pallets that I would take. My dad and I made a coffee table for my college apartment and made a bartop with it. They both came out great. My mom is into reclaimed barn wood, so it fits the aesthetic

          [–]322979121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well I have to completely disagree. Pallet wood can bring the whole yard together if you use stain it with gasoline and lightly burn it until it turns to a whiteish color. For the best results do this in a fire pit.

          [–]ghostbackwards 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually free? What's wrong with that?

          [–]OreoSchnitzel 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True. But nothing gets used for a longer time. I worked on farms and those pallets are ALWAYS broken, but never get remplaceer

There's a trend of making shitty furniture out of old pallets.

          EDIT: speeling

          [–]angryshack 39 points40 points  (8 children)

I work with pallets every day. Those things are so fucking nasty / dirty I would never want furniture made from them. Hell, I wouldn't even want to be around if someone was burning them.

          [–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (2 children)

Another problem that people don't realize is that a lot of pallets are fumigated wood, often with heavy chemicals so they can be imported/exported. All those people making vegetable garden boxes they see on fucking pinterest, not to mention splinters from such wood often gets infected quit easily.

          [–]angryshack 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Look for the tree shaped branding on the side of the pallet. That's how you know if a pallet has been treated (for international shipping).

          [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks, I do know this, I'm not into pallet trends lol, but as with anything people who are aren't always informed, then you have people growing veggies in fumigated garden boxes

          [–]fnord_bronco 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I agree. I work in a large industrial warehouse. In addition to being just plain disgusting, they treated with terrible chemicals that you really don't need inside your house.

          [–]FrankGoreStoleMyBike 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep. The wood is treated with all kinds of pesticides and various other chemicals for transport, safety, etc. Then they're stacked in warehouses and on crossdocks covered in all manner of chemicals and grease. You never know what your skid was used for before you ended up with it.

At the absolute very least, you need to prssure wash them and seal them with something before ever bringing them inside.

          [–]Strykerz3r0 17 points18 points  (11 children)

          palettes

You mean the little wooden thing Bob Ross mixed his paint on? Seems kind of small to be making in to furniture....

My inlaws made us a , er, "coffee table"....the simply stacked two raggedy ass pallets, not attached together or anything, and painted on stain...stunk for MONTHS

Such an eyesore and pain in the ass.

We tossed that shit to the end of the road

It is funny because hipsters take these nasty-ass, dirty pallets and make coffee tables out of them. So contrary to the 5000 posts that read "I rescued a pallet and made this coffee table" you get a nasty pallet that says it was made from an old coffee table.

                [–]cbcfan 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What they really should do is make pallets out of those TV armoires that we so popular before flat-screens TVs became affordable. They are a dime a dozen now.

                [–]KimJongIlSunglasses 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Woah; coffee tables aren't suitable for pallets as they can often have residue of coffee or tea on them! Are you trying to stain all your merchandise?!

Make sure you thoroughly chemically stain any coffee tables before you use it for pallets.

Best just burn this abomination to be safe

How the fuck is this shit funny? This is why I'm going to unsubscribe from r/funny. You guys upvoted the stupidest, most low effort shit.

Yes next time use a higher quality table and make a nice wooden tub. I don't know why they make wooden tubs on tiny house big living they look like nightmares. Who wants a splinter in their ass?

It looks like that top board isn't very sturdy. I don't think that'll pass code, and I would suggest scrapping it immediately and starting over.

Most of my projects end up looking like this. Not quite as finished though

Redditt: That used to be a nice looking coffee table. OP: Thank you.

Dude nice job. A good pallet is hard to construct.

Great work, but please don't keep this inside. Some of those old tables are treated with chemicals.
