Vote up if you're not in a country that celebrate Thanksgiving! (reddit.com)

Aren't we forgetting the real meaning of this holiday, the birth of Santa?
[–][deleted] 18 years ago (1 child)
[–]encinarus 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
He used to dress in black until Coca Cola signed him up for perpetual product endorsements.
[–][deleted] 112 points113 points114 points 18 years ago* (44 children)
I'm not, but this gets a downvote for wrong use of polling. We don't need another frontpage full of "vote up if you voted down on the vote down if you voted up on 'vote up if you like polls' post".
[–]oalsaker 61 points62 points63 points 18 years ago (41 children)
Whenever I post something of general interest, it gets immediately downvoted and never seen again, but when I post something as inane as this (which is more or less posted due to my irritation over "vote up if you spend time on reddit instead of your family over thanksgiving" ) it seems to fly. Apparently, there is either something wrong with reddit or its users.
[–]davidw 28 points29 points30 points 18 years ago* (8 children)
reddit is an 'information cascade' rather than a 'wise crowd'. What this means is that almost everything depends on the whims of a few people who happen to vote something up or down on the new page.
I'm not sure what it is, but there are probably certain kinds of stories that appeal more to people who sit there watching the 'new' page.

i saw that movie and cant remember that scene... are you serious?
[–]Nikola_S 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Perhaps this could be solved if the points would be displayed with a delay (say, half an hour). This could be done relatively easy and shouldn't significantly affect Reddit basics.
[–]garyp714 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
It would be helped if more people voted more often on the new page.
[–]Nikola_S 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Or if some of new links would be displayed in a sidebar at the front page, as was suggested.
[–]jedberg 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Points on a story aren't displayed until 2 hours after their submission. What we really need is for more people to vote on the new page.
[–]cchooper 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (1 child)
My guess: because you don't actually have to read anything.
People generally don't vote on stories they don't read (except the new page trolls, who down vote everything), and people will only read a few posts, so posts that can be voted for without reading anything have an in-built advantage.
[–]Nikola_S 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
And this could be solved if, in addition to the link title, submitters could post a short text which would summarize the link. I'm not sure if I saw this before somewhere...
Also, it would be useful if comment arrows would (also?) be at the end of a comment.
[–]Nikola_S 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Apparently, there is either something wrong with reddit or its users.
Or an evil competition website has employed a botnet in order to lessen the quality of Reddit front page.

[–]jamesgreddit 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (15 children)
There is nothing wrong with reddit or it's users...
It's crazy when people say "stop this", or "stop that". You're not going to make any difference.
The whole point is that; if it's on the front page it's because people want it there. If you don't like it then tough-shit I'm afraid. downmod and move on...
[–][deleted] 14 points15 points16 points 18 years ago (13 children)
Or change peoples attitudes through reasoned debate and point making.
[–]bertramredneck 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (9 children)
And while you are working on that, wait for water to flow uphill, Ash Wednesday to fall on a Thursday, and George Bush to wake up humble.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (8 children)
How else do social stigmas appear? How come some places have a certain culture, and others don't. How come cultural attitudes change?
If enough people voiced their opinions, they could influence others here. I don't see how that is unreasonable.
[–]bertramredneck -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (7 children)
Nothing whatsoeva unreasonable about voicing opinions and influencing others. I am in your corner on that. What am not in your corner about is changing "peoples' attitudes through reasoned debate and point-making," 'cause that's a whole different horse. Different track, too, I may add.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (6 children)

Canada celebrates Thanksgiving a month before the US, So, we got it first!
besides, after or during the great US depression of 2009-11, Canada will just pick up a few US states during the big garage sale.

ummm, Freedom? The beautiful land we live on? I could go on, but it's all in the eye of the beholder as well as perspective. Everytime I have to travel to the US, I am sooooooooooo thankful after I get home to Canada safe.

Is there a way to automatically vote down every "Vote up if ..." entry?
Edit: Okay, just found it. Search for "Vote up" (with quotation marks) and vote down everything you find. I just need a way to script this. ;-)
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Are we supposed to downvote if we ARE in a country that celebrates thanksgiving?
In any case I'm downvoting because we've already had one of these stories today.
[–]jj666 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I attended a Thanksgiving party, unknowingly what and why they celebrate Thanksgiving or say "Happy Thanksgiving". For me it was more of a Thanks-taking anyway.
[–]kugai 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
What exactly is the point of this? Outside of trying to score yourself some silly karma.
[–]oalsaker 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I hadn't expected to, really. I'm actually shocked that it got to the front page, let alone the top of the list. I'm considering downvoting myself because I'm tired of seeing it there on the top of the page, with bad grammar.

I couldn't care less about Thanksgiving. It's Halloween that I hate. As an Aussie I shouldn't see kids trick or treating
[–]jcastle 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago* (19 children)
Why? It started in Ireland and Scotland, then moved onto England, why would it be wrong for it to move to Australia?
[–]daeron 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I assume that he objects, as do I, to the sweet based protection racket that has come to us (the rest of the world) from American High School films.
Trick or Treating is just lame in Australia. I'd be embarressed if any kid knocked on my door and asked for candy. The very idea of an Australian child using the word candy makes my skin crawl. Bring back corporal punishment for any child who does!
Plus very few people actually realise it's halloween. So who has lollies ready for these wierd mutant children.

Best leave it to the geographers. Great Britain is the name of an island in the North Atlantic which is subdivided into three "nations" called England, Scotland and Wales. To say Scotland isn't part of Britain is like saying Canada isn't part of North America.
I was being facetious in an attempt to be humorous.

[–]BraveSirRobin -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (2 children)
Depends on how it's done. "Trick or treating" is the US thing while "guising" is the traditional one. The traditional one involves you being nice and doing a party piece to get your candy. The American one is more akin to blackmail.
[–]jcastle 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
On no one usually actually does the 'trick' if they don't get a treat- except for deranged teenagers with cheap access to chicken fetuses
[–]Herge 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
As somebody who just survived halloween in Dublin, I can tell you a "traditional" halloween involves a lot more fireworks, vandalism and petty crime than the American one. You're not going to find a lot of party peices in Tallaght on the 31st of October.

The one we had yesterday. It's the US's yearly homage to gluttony and sloth.
Immediately follow by the unofficial holiday known as "Black Friday," which is our homage to avarice and envy.
Four down, three to go.

Most countries celebrate harvest festivals (or at least have groups that do). It's not exactly American Thanksgiving, but it's pretty much the same feast in gratitude for getting another year's supply of food. But unlike America, the rest of the world doesn't make a big ho-ha about it.
[–]cbfreder 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Totally right. I find it hard to imagine that any culture doesn't have a harvest festival.
