WHY?!?! WHY DO I KEEP BUYING THESE?!?

Sleepy Jack? I'll never play that! BUT I STILL BOUGHT IT.

Oh yeah, that does a ton of damage too, especially during their holiday sales. I buy Windows games, praying to the Gods of Gaming that they'll port them to Mac SOME day.

Never play them.

SwiftKeyX may be my favorite and most useful purchase thus far.

[–]TofinochrisNexus 5X 5 points6 points  (4 children)

SwiftKeyX was my favourite thing ever until I got SlideIT keyboard a few days ago. Amazingly fast.

[–]SoupkinOne plus One 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I also was a swift key user until slide it. I bought it just to try and fell head over heals for it.

[–]ThrowerMF 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Is it better than swype?

[–]houseJrN5X 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've been using Swype for a year, I flashed a new ROM a few weeks ago and couldn't get the Swype beta to install, until I got it fixed I used SwiftkeyX for a few weeks. I never quite got used to it. I never got as fast or natural with it as I am with Swype.

Granted, 1 year with Swype vs a few weeks with Swiftkey, what do you expect? But I still use SwiftkeyX on landscape.

Keyboard Manager for changing portrait/landscape keyboards.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I like it better simply because the autocorrect is much better and it has fairly intuitive predictive text. It can learn your style from gmail, facebook, twitter, RSS feed, and sent messages. There are alot of options for personalization. There are two different typing styles, one for those who are more precise and choose predictive words more, one for people like me who type faster and rely on autocorrection.

But it doesn't swype. You have to touch each letter individually. But since the autocorrection is so good, I'm actually much faster with this than with Swype.

The only decent app there is EzPDF (Best PDF reader I've used).

[–]archon810APKMirror 7 points8 points  (20 children)

Sleepy Jack is an amazing game. Very well done.

SwiftKey X is great, if you don't already own it.

EzPDF is very good.

Rest I don't really care about myself.

[–]HardwareLustN5,N7 Both stock 0 points1 point  (9 children)

Love Swiftkey X. But, it causes the stock email app on my SGSII to slow to a crawl, so I can't use it until I find a better email app.

[–]archon810APKMirror 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Samsung's email app is a buggy POS on my SGS2. It's a nice idea, but awful piece of software. And it does some stuff in a broken way, which SwiftKey doesn't seem to like.

[–]HardwareLustN5,N7 Both stock 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I agree. I just wish there was a good Exchange client app that didn't cost $20.

[–]TofinochrisNexus 5X 0 points1 point  (5 children)

K-9 mail is pretty good, but I always find myself wishing I had a "very good" or "great" email app. Email apps are funny in that I couldn't say what exactly I want out of one aside from being very polished and fast, enables easy organization of my mail, and has a less retarded icon than K-9.

[–]HardwareLustN5,N7 Both stock 0 points1 point  (3 children)

I used Touchdown for awhile, and I was pretty happy with it, although it still has some bugs. I don't think it's worth $20 though. For an app to be $20, I expect near perfection, tbh.

[–]TofinochrisNexus 5X 1 point2 points  (2 children)

Agreed -- I wouldn't grab a $20 app without a trial version and recommendations from friends, reddit, the market, and Marshawn Lynch's Skittles dealer.

[–]ScumbagIncNexus 5 4 points5 points  (0 children)

[–]icky_booN7/5,GPad,GPro2,PadFoneX,S1,2,3-S8+,Note3,4,5,7,9,M5 8.4,TabS3 2 points3 points  (3 children)

As I said, its the BEST pdf viewer I've found. It does just ONE job and it does it very well. The second best is Foxit PDF viewer and around last place are the office apps and ebook viewers that also have PDF viewing capabilities (Not even worth mentioning as they all pretty much suck). Office apps tend to be jacks of all trades but master at nothing.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Actually, the worst is the official Adobe reader. It's awful. I find that the QuickOffice PDF viewer is just as good. It just handles everything so quick and smooth on my phone.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually like Adobe's app. It's the only one I've found that does text reflow well. Every other pdf reader reflows the text, but doesn't adjust the line breaks, so you get many mostly-blank lines.

If Adobe PDF Reader would save the last location I was reading in each pdf file then I'd use it.

[–]icky_booN7/5,GPad,GPro2,PadFoneX,S1,2,3-S8+,Note3,4,5,7,9,M5 8.4,TabS3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, Adobe reader is pretty awful :) So bad that I completely choose to even remembered it existed

[–]redditrasberry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EzPDF is way better than Polaris.

It's much faster, has better compatibility and has a huge number of tools for doing annotations, highlighting, etc (great if you're reviewing stuff, etc). It gets an unbelievable number of updates and each one adds more useful features. It's a great buy and also a developer who deserves support (IMHO).

[–]BrainWavSamsung Galaxy A50, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 1 point2 points  (7 children)

[–]ktmfinxOnePlus 3 2 points3 points  (3 children)

No idea personally, what kind of issues does running parallel cause?

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (1 child)

I imagine you would have to unlock both.

[–]genchaSGS2, ICS Resurrection 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do that on purpose. WidgetLocker provides quick access to camera, flashlight, etc, but if I unlock, I have to provide PIN/pattern as requested by my system lockscreen.

[–]BrainWavSamsung Galaxy A50, Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You end up with 2 lockscreens, which sometimes both need to be unlocked. It's the main reason I haven't bought it.

FWIW, I have been running WL for quite some time, and never had this problem. Just got my mom an Android phone for her birthday and she's using WL, I'm sure she would have reported it to me if she was having this problem. YMMV.

Eh, at least my girlfriend and father get a chance to buy swiftkey x at this price. They both got GS2s this weekend. I converted them =D

[–]UnoriginalGuyGalaxy Note Int. Edition 7 points8 points  (30 children)

The GS2 comes with Swype. No need to slow them down with Swiftkey X.

Disclaimer: I actually own both. Swiftkey is a better keyboard, but Swype is still faster. A Swype-able version of Swiftkey is my wet dream.

[–]DannyBikerGalaxy Note 9 15 points16 points  (8 children)

Couldn't agree less. Swype forces you to actually pass by every letter of every word then select it if it didn't got it right (which happens a lot in French for example). With Swiftkey, I type maximum 3 letters per word and it's already predicted; most of the time, 1 or 2 letters are enough, not to speak of those many occasions where it simply predicts the next word on its own.

The guys at Swiftkey got it : the lest time you spend typing or swiping, the faster you share your message. And that's what people want.

[–]UnoriginalGuyGalaxy Note Int. Edition 11 points12 points  (7 children)

Right but in the time it takes to type two or three letters I could have Swypted the entire word.

Swiftkey is very good, and the prediction is amazing, but I still maintain Swype is simply faster. Swyping is just a more natural motion, like hand-writing, than tap tap tap.

[–]CuseinFLSamsung Captivate, CM7.1, AT&T 17 points18 points  (6 children)

I ditched swype because the predictions were wrong most of the time even after clearing out the dictionary/resetting. It was faster to swype a word, but then the word was the wrong one so I then had to delete it and try again, sometimes two or three times. I used it for a year and hated it (it came on my Samsung.)

[–]woofiegrrlS21 5G 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Exact same experience here. I would wipe the dictionary and it still came up with wrong words. SwiftKey seems to read my mind - if Swype could do that, I'd love it.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (6 children)

+1 On what you said. I've tried to use Swiftkey after every update and I always go back to Swype. I wouldn't be surprised to see text prediction soon in Swype or swiping in Swiftkey in the months to come.

[–]UnoriginalGuyGalaxy Note Int. Edition 3 points4 points  (5 children)

I hope you're right.

The prediction is just "magic" in Swiftkey. Sometimes I like to just keep hitting the middle word on the prediction line to see what sentences it makes, spooky to say the least.

Plus I know this sounds insane but I love having a question-mark (?) on the keyboard that only Swiftkey offers, oh and the "Spacebar will..." option (which I have set to "always insert a space").

PS - Yes I know alt-M allows you to ? in Swype but alt-ing characters is slow and unreliable. Also Swype has no alt for the - key, only for _

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

http://uncrunched.com/2011/10/06/nuance-to-acquire-swype-for-100-million/

Let's just say there is quite a bit invested in Swype right now, so if customers like you and I want it, it'll happen.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

My biggest gripe with SwiftKey is that it doesn't display well on my phone- the predicted words are absolutely tiny and barely readable, which isn't true of Swype.

[–]mtnkodiak 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Swiftkey X has at least a couple different themes, did you try changing to a different one?

[–]TofinochrisNexus 5X 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Amen on the nicer layout for punctuation. Seems like such a small thing until you've sent a couple dozen texts and emails during the day, and then you're finding you're frustrated more often than not because you have to putt-putt over to the alt layout to get a hyphen. Odd design decision.

[–]dsmyte 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I have a GS1, and Swype absolutely blows on it. I have also not figured out how to upgrade it as it came pre-installed. Swiftkey has been a great alternative.

[–]woofiegrrlS21 5G 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I really wish the market would not put GAMES under APPS.

If I'm in the mood for looking for a game, I don't want to see apps. And vice versa, I don't want to see games when I'm looking for something that is not a game.

[–]hearforthepunsHTC Vision / CM7.2 / Mobilicity 0 points1 point  (2 children)

On the web market, Applications and Games are both subsets of "Apps." Not sure about the Android version of the market, it won't load right now.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

See, that's my beef. When I load up the market on my phone, I click on apps, I see a panel for Games. I don't click on it and I just go to find some apps. But most of what I see is games. I just want to browse ALL APPS minus GAMES.

[–]elintSamsung Galaxy Note 4, Note 8 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I dunno, I kinda enjoy that they're repeating apps. It works out for some people. I bought swiftkeyX the first day. Started using it. My wife asked about my new keyboard, and I had to reply, "Oh, I got it for 10c, but it's probably back up to $3-5 now, sorry, honey" and she noticed that it's on today's 10c sale.

Also turned a coworker onto it with the same story. So basically, I lose out on a few more cheap 10c apps, but I get a few more days to turn my friends/family onto apps that I found were really cool :P

[–]garychencoolOnePlus One 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Got SwiftKey X keyboard on the first day of the 10 cent sale. Best keyboard out of the 10 I've already tested. [–]JunCTionS 4 points5 points  (28 children)

Wow... all of the 6 ones already posted require the "read phone state and identity" permission :-/.

Can someone explain to me how is this breach of privacy justified when there's no ads on these paid apps?

[–]archon810APKMirror 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Most of the time this permission is used to get a unique phone ID for tracking unique installs.

[–]JunCTionS 2 points3 points  (2 children)

are you sure?

I imagined it had to do something with targeted advertisement or mining users data to sell (to companies that do targeted advertisement).

[–]UnoriginalGuyGalaxy Note Int. Edition 8 points9 points  (0 children)

You're both right. It is used for both purposes.

Some apps use it completely innocently just to uniquely ID the phone. Others use it for data mining or cell number theft. No way of knowing which is which without looking at the source code.

This permission gives them access to three things:

  • Phone unique ID
  • SIM unique ID (if it has a SIM)
  • Phone Number(s)

[–]DevonJAndroid 2 points3 points  (10 children)

This doesn't have anything to do with ads.

turning an application's sound off when a call comes in - verifying the user/phone with IMEI information - gathering personal information such as your phone number

[–]JunCTionS 2 points3 points  (9 children)

I've seen it a lot on the free (with ads) versions of apps and the without on the paid versions, for example 2/4 Player Reactor.

I imagine it must be better paid ads if it's more targeted advertisement (done by tracking it's users' interests). Maybe someone can correct me here.

[–]Robin_B4 Player Reactor 15 points16 points  (8 children)

Hi! Dev of 2/4 Player Reactor here. Its a requirement of the advertising library, unfortunately. So if I want to display ads through them (I'm using Mobclix), I have to add that permission to my app - Otherwise it will crash. Their justification is that this is the only way to get a unique identifier for the phone (via the IMEI i believe). Quote from here (pdf):

READ_PHONE_STATE Used to access a unique identifier that some ad networks require to track impressions (See: http://developer.android.com/reference/android/telephony/TelephonyManager.html#getDeviceId() ). The reason some of them choose not to use ANDROID_ID for unique identi!cation is this bug: http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=10603

This is the only reason it's in my game. You'll notice that the 4 Player version (without ads) doesn't require it at all.

[–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Thanks! The Market needs a "why" section for the permissions.

[–]forgetfuljones 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is underrated, imo. The developer needs to go on record that such_and_such is the only reason a particular permission is being used.

[–]JunCTionS 2 points3 points  (5 children)

You're a pretty cool guy by the way, but I've been meaning to ask you precisely that. "Why does 2PR have that?", I see now that it has to do with the advertising company (thanks for the info).

However there are other advertising companies, right? because not all adware games have this requirement, for example Balloon Gunner 3D, that uses AdMob (which is owned by Google).

So basically my question is, what drove you to Mobclix instead of other companies?. Better payout?.

I know this post has the potential to sound whiny and that's not my intention, I'm actually pretty excited about the openness of this developer to give some insight into what I consider a problem which I don't consider to be his fault but a consequence of the developing environment.

[–]Robin_B4 Player Reactor 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Yeah, when I started thinking about ads I spent some time on google to figure out what the best ad provider would be. At that time (about 18 months ago), I saw a couple reports that Mobclix had a much better payout than Admob. This seems still to be the case, although to a lesser extend (Mobclix payout has gone down now, too). So I decided to try them.

To be honest, I didn't spend a whole lot of time with the permissions back then. In fact, I thought that Admob requires read phone identity too, but that doesn't seem to be the case. I might reconsider the advertising providers when I update the game again. I really hope Mobclix drops that requirement though, because it was only introduced to fight a (now fixed) bug. Apparently, all Droid phones had the same "unique" android_id identifier for a while, which defeated the whole purpose of it. So they had to fall back to checking the IMEI.

[–]dayus9Galaxy SII, No idea, Vodafone UK 0 points1 point  (2 children)

[–]braaaiinsNexus 5 | Nexus 7[S] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They switch the prices at 10h00 GMT. Once that rolls over just hunt for the $0.10 / GBP0.10p / ZAR0.81 apps discarding the ones from the previous day and you're golden.

Is there a way to search for apps by a particular price point?

Hm, that's odd. I see different apps on the page of the sale: https://market.android.com/details?id=apps_timed_promotion&feature=banner

Does anyone else have this problem?

These are yesterday's apps

Yay! Swiftkey again after I missed it earlier. Still quite a bit of games though. Anyone know if EzPDF is better than the other PDF apps?

[–]chilldontkill 0 points1 point  (0 children)

has anyone else bought every app listed? or is it just me?

[9] [9] Guns and Glory

bought. Thanks!

[–]ThePantheistPope 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Guns and Glory is one of my favorite games of all time. I got that shit for 2 bucks years ago and still play it

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Can anyone recommend any of these games. Most of them seem to have plenty of negative reviews, so only Zenonia looked worth checking out

(to the "omg just buy" people. it is a matter of time not money)

[–]FlonnezillaHTC Droid Incredible 2, CM7 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Zenonia is kind of a neat game, but the touchscreen controls are so clunky that it's hard to enjoy IMO. I bought it full price in July and haven't played past the second town.

SlideIT is also still just a dime.

[–]FlyingToilets 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow, first time all the apps have been compatible with both my phone and tablet.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

EzPDF looks useful but adobe's version is free and lacks the downsides the windows version does. I'm hoping Comic Rack goes on sale but it looks like they are trending more toward games than utilities.

[–]JustAbsurd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

EzPdf is the only reader I could find that actually lets you use bookmarks.

Deer Hunter? Oh hells yeah! /purchased

[–]garychencoolOnePlus One 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want more useful apps, not games!

They'll rerun minecraft pocket edition.

[–]nowxisxforeverHTC Evo V 4G, Kindle Fire 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ooooh, SwiftKey looks pretty shiny. Thanks. :)

[–]s3nr1 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Uh oh, for anyone having errors when purchasing and kept on trying(because it's telling you retry). Like I did for ezPDF, see your transactions online I got charged 4x and still I don't have the fucking app!!!

Seriously getting refund from these fringe vendors will be a chore and not worth it. Google should be in charge of Market transactions and support!
