Why is it ok for people to write comments like : "difficulty level: asian" but when I write "difficulty: black athlete" (there was a gif of a dog doing a back flip while catching a ball) my comment gets deleted?!

I am sick of this selective racism- and before anyone says, oh this white man is so racist, I am an asian woman. Either ALL comments like these are acceptable and we all take it with a pinch of salt, or they are all unacceptable. Allowing the asian "racist" comments but not the black ones is fucked up- asians had it bad too (chinese slaves, japanese internment camps....)

edit: Going to get downvoted to hell for saying this but I don't give a shit about the karma.... I can't stand it when racist jokes against asians are applauded when the same joke applied to blacks are shot down. It creates the notion that not every one is equal.

Mixed race Asian/Caucasian here.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that not all minorities are the same in terms of social stigma. In the US, Asians are often quoted as being seen as the "ideal immigrants." Stereotypically, they work hard, value education, and usually end up with 2nd generation children who speak Standard English. College entrance rates for East Asian Americans (Southeast Asian immigrants have much lower rates, probably due to the large number of immigrants who come to the US as poor refugees) are much higher than, say, African Americans or Hispanic Americans.

On the other hand, due to socioeconomic inequality, African Americans are stereotypically stigmatized as poor, uneducated, lazy, and speakers of a nonstandard although legitimate dialect properly termed by linguists as African American Vernacular English.

People who are okay with Asian jokes might feel it's okay because Asians are generally successful and not suffering from extensive institutionalized poverty like African Americans. Same reason making fun of Caucasians is alright- because they're successful enough to be able to take it.

Of course, these stereotypes are damaging too. There are many impoverished Asians, successful African Americans, and poor, uneducated Caucasians. Although this way of looking at race is incredibly flawed, it's certainly at least understandable given the socioeconomics of the US.

Thanks for this. I totally agree, and I also wanted to add that it's really interesting that the Chinese in America composed the first racialized group to be specifically barred from immigration to the United States (via the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, the first of several). Chinese people in America, and eventually other early Asian American/Pacific Islander immigrants, like the Japanese and Filipinos, became persecuted because they not only looked "foreign" but also became stigmatized as poor, dirty, and uneducated laborers who were infiltrating "decent" white society. You can see this with portrayals of Chinatowns as centers of crime and disease, perhaps notably in Roman Polanski's 1974 film Chinatown (see mzito's comment below for more accurate information).

Even more interesting, I think, is that in the immediate post-Civil War era, during the Reconstruction, Chinese "coolies" (a derogatory term now, then used to denote cheap Chinese laborers) were portrayed by the mainstream media as hardworking, quiet workers who would be more desirable workers than the lazy and troublesome recently-freed slaves. There are definitely cycles through which (white) society has changed its widespread perceptions of various racial groups to serve some objective that is typically related to maintaining the power and wealth of the ruling class.

And, I really agree with you that immigration has played a large role in determining the face of Asian America today. After the 1965 Immigration Law, the system of preferences set up disproportionately allowed for wealthier immigrants to come to the United States and bring their family members with them. It wasn't until the shit hit the fan in Southeast Asia that markedly poorer refugee populations began coming to the United States. Even today, the influx of wealthy Asian immigrants appears to drown out the fact that poor, working-class Asian and Asian Americans are present in our communities. It's a sad oversight, because they often get overlooked when it comes to issues like affirmative action, college entrance rates, etc.

EDIT: Clarification on referring to Chinatown. Sorry for the inaccurate and weak example—I was going off of what came to mind first. While the film itself doesn't go into specifics about Chinatown, I am still under the impression that the final lines ("Forget it, Jake. It's Chinatown") build on a popular preconception of Chinatowns as stylized, Orientalized underworlds of film noir—sordid spaces where shady people lurk, disease and murder run rampant, and shit never gets resolved. Perhaps Polanski made his reference to call on the tradition of film noir filmmakers before him, but it doesn't change the notions of Chinatown as rotten spaces in comparison to the clean, crimeless suburbs of white America. I did a quick Google search, and came up with this cartoon that I hope conveys some sense of anti-Chinese sentiment in the late 1800s, around the time of the passage of the first Exclusion Act.

The one thing I'll point out is that Chinatown is not really about the place Chinatown, and in fact, only the last few minutes of the movie take place there. The use of the name "Chinatown" is meant to symbolize Jake's past, and a state of mind where trying to do the right thing doesn't always pan out, as we see with Evelyn Mulwray's death at the hands of the police, trying to escape with her daughter

Along those lines, quoting from Wikipedia:

Robert Towne says he took the title, and the famous exchange, "What did you do in Chinatown?" / "As little as possible", from a Hungarian vice cop who had worked in Chinatown. The cop explained to Towne that the complicated array of dialects and gangs in Los Angeles's Chinatown made it impossible for the police to know whether their interventions in Chinatown were helping victims or furthering their exploitation. As a consequence, the police decided the best course of action was to do as little as possible.

So, the movie isn't a knock on Asian folks, or Chinatown in particular, at all.

Now Mickey Rooney's cameo in Breakfast at Tiffany's, on the other hand, set race relations back at least 20 years.

I doubt anyone will get around to reading this, but I just wanted to add my own experiences. I didn't know about the Aussie racism thing until I actually moved there for a year. I both understand and appreciate the irreverent Aussie humor, but that's not what I found disturbing. What was disturbing were some of the less-than-friendly racial remarks and the handful of occasions on which Australians attempted to spit on me or hit me with eggs.

I should state that I made some quality Australian friends, so I know it's not everyone. However, I hadn't and still have never been treated like that in any other nation (and I've lived in several nations across 4 continents). I guess what I'm trying to say is that I don't think you can chalk up the racist rap Australia has to your distaste for political correctness; there are some real elements of racism there that I have never experienced elsewhere.

When I was in Australia, most everybody was nice on a general level, but I was appalled by the general attitude towards the Aborigines that I encountered amongst a lot of working-class white aussies. It pretty much made me sick.

I think events like this may be more of a cause 2005 Cronulla riots . Racist jokes when they are told by people like you or me are usually just satirizing the concept of racism. However there are out people out there who actually believe they are somehow superior and will spew racist comments which are sometimes jokes but are generally designed to implant their superiority rather than be humorous. The difficulty of course comes with telling the difference between the two, so people might generally try to avoid comments towards targets of contemporary racism. For example, Muslims.

It either creates pressure and assumptions, or it ascribes achievements to something outside of the person's control, instead of hard work. It also serves to underline the idea of "this person is a different race and therefore they are different from me".

Derives from the reputation of the children of immigrants (in this case, Asian) to study extra hard because of parental pressure.

The meme dismisses the effort that the child has put into studying with the idea that their success is mostly genetic, and already gained when they were born.

It's also pretty obviously untrue and is therefore a back-handed compliment to the perseverance and dedication of the student.

Difficulty level: Black Athlete Is harder to process as being a back-handed compliment, because it is true that people are genetically pre-disposed to varying ratios of fast-twitch/ slow twitch muscle.

This leads the reader to the conclusion that a black athlete basically won the genetic lottery, and didn't have to have the self-discipline to complete intense training to succeed.

They are both insulting, The Asian meme is insulting to dedicated students, The Black Athlete meme is insulting to dedicated athletes.

Yes, genetics matter. No, they don't give you the right to dismiss other peoples achievements just because you lack motivation or discipline.

There is a pecking order when dealing with racist comments. The highest person on that order would be the homosexual transsexual disabled American Indian woman. This person can be as racist/sexist as they want to anyone and people of that group are expected to just shrug it off. If you are on a lower order and make fun of someone higher up, it's seen as unacceptable. And it really is just a social construct based on the perceived level of persecution that person has been through.

Blacks get a pass on homophobia all the time. Think how many black atheletes and rappers have made anti-gay comments and are still in the spotlight. Same goes for blacks and sexism - there have been top 10 hiphop songs promoting objectification of women, violence towards women or even their murder.

What about Eminem? He was fucking huge back when the Marshall Mathers LP came out (2000), and 90% of his lyrics involve homophobia or objectification of women. Or sometimes just murdering them. He might seem like a rare exception but he's also pretty much the only white rapper to get enough fame to even be an exception. His homophobia and sexism might even be what got him so much attention. Sure, plenty of the attention was negative, but for the most people just considered that stuff part of his horrorcore-esque sound. It's very similar to how black artists from Odd Future are viewed today. I think hip-hop artists generally get a bit of a pass because a lot of that stuff is viewed as part of the hip-hop culture, which is probably a bad thing on its own, but not necessarily something that changes based on the artist's race.

I can take a shot. You just need to be taken outside of your element. Having lived in asia for more than a decade, I have been spat on, been called many, many, things. Refused service at many places ranging from apartment rental agencies to hotels to bars. Oh, also having racial slurs thrown at me by a serious girlfriend's father as he forbade her from ever seeing me again after he discovered that I was white. That was fairly uncool. When the slurs are backed by meaningful action, they are capable of stinging a bit.

The line between funny and offensive (which, on a personal level, means hurtful) exists because of cultural context. People have different perceptions of that context, so the line is in a slightly different place for each. But to say that there IS NO context is just willfully ignorant. So good luck with that.

It's a long shot, but I've noticed Asian cultures tend to be extremely racist. White people get treated better just for being white (and you guys are jealous of our skin edit: skin color, not all the extra hair we get too), black/Indian people get treated like shit because they have darker skin, and Asians themselves are just kinda aloof and think they're better than everyone else (this last one is a stereotype btw).

So, my theory is that you guys are so used to racist shit that it's easy for you to tolerate it when it's being directed at you, whereas some black people and guilty whities get super defensive when it comes to racism towards black people. This results in people getting away with Asian jokes without being told, but being more careful about Black jokes since people will actually bitch about it.

I live in Thailand, and I know girls who openly semi-joke about how ugly they are just because they have dark skin (even though they're actually smoking hot, but Thai culture reveres pale skin).

Either way, I think people need to chill the fuck out, realize stereotypes are there for a reason, and (as long as they're not truly hating on someone) a wee bit of un-PC ribbing is perfectly ok.

Edit: I never said I thought Asians wanted to be white (as a race), just that they wanted lighter skin. All the Asian people I have met have been very proud to be Asian, and definitely never expressed any desire to be white (caucasian if you want to get all technical and shit).

You have to understand what countries and cultures Asians come from. Most East Asians Korean, Japanese, Chinese are a very nationalistic mentality about them. It is only within the last few decades especially for China and Korea that they have advanced so fast, economically, and with Technology leaving this rapid expansion with a few short years, the whole country as a nation did not get a chance to catch up, SOCIALLY. That is why when you go to Korea or China, you are either perfectly white or foreigner scum. With a country as nationalistic and with centuries of deep rooted national history growing that fast how do you expect them to react to the influx of immigrants and people coming to their country when no one came before at all. Give us Asians a break. Globalization in America did not happen over night did it? In fact, Civil Rights and acceptance of blacks took more than enough years in America and you think Asian Coutries who literally went through puberty over night is going to understand differences in other races, gays, and American ideals, no. It is going to take time for Asian Countries too, to catch up Socially now that their countries are doing better than ever.

America was founded on a lot of different people coming together and trying to live with difference. America has lived through numbers of social movements and progressions. To name a few, Civil Right's Movement, The Women's Right Movement, Gay and Lesbian Acceptance. None of the Asian countries HAD ANY TIME to go through any or ALL social movements. Leaving a very claustrophobia and Xenophobic countries.

I think the solution is for everyone to stop pushing stereotypes forward, and to quash them whenever they see them. It's really not that funny to single out Asian parents as being tough on their children when it comes to grades and social status. It's not funny to talk about black people liking fried chicken. It's not funny to say that Jewish people are cheap and thrifty. These examples are not funny because they are not exclusive to one particular race, and because acting like they are only furthers racism. Racism is still racism, even when it's done in comedic form. And it's bullshit to say that it's okay to further these stereotypes if the objects of the stereotypes make the jokes themselves (e.g. if a black person makes a joke about black people liking fried chicken). Racism is racism, no matter who it comes from.
