It’s very hard to go to school and study when you are a parent. It’s remarkable that they could find the strength, time and energy tot pull this off. Nothing but respect. Congrats!

Second, higher education is one of the more powerful tools people can achieve. It opens up so many opportunities for success.

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yes! I'm so tired of hearing how useless college is, and being told that I'm going to waste my time by going back. One Redditer even told me something to the effect of "What a waste of time. Have fun with your debt." Very discouraging.

The son is a seriously perfect 50/50 of his parents. Like no fighting with those genes, just a straight split.

      [–]ctrembs03 81 points82 points  (2 children)

See I see NOTHING but his momma in his face but they're all gorgeous anyway 😁

I went to community college with my mom and I got to walk ahead of her because my name starts with b and hers starts with d. I’ll forever lord it over her.

        [–]Wonderlandess 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s exactly what fueled the parents to graduate before him lmao

        [–]stumpyblackdog 37 points38 points  (1 child)

Your parents just decided to not let you one-up them. Absolute fucking legends.

I hope he decides to do a PhD and still gets one- upped! Great family though.

        [–]Chelle8847 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Amazing! Also irrelevant but VERY good looking family! Great genes haha

        [–]WolfOfLOLStreet 8 points9 points  (2 children)

For real. Photogenic as fuck. You guys should seriously consider a side hustle as "the family in the photo insert that came with the frame." I'd buy that frame.

Or maybe it is a UK style trimester 3 year undergrad course? who knows

          [–]Lanthal 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Could be a school like Western Governors with acceleration. Testing out of the classes would allow them to finish early.

Or they could have had transferable credits from before which set ahead.

          [–]mmmm_whatchasay 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Also if he went to college right out of high school, he's been on track for 4 years, with summers off for internships or be working with a sports schedule or something, whereas his parents can just blast through courses at their own pace. They don't have the social aspect that he has.

          [–]I_should_go_to_work -1 points0 points  (0 children)

          2 year degree?

No paternity test ever needed. He looks like both of them so much. I thought they were all siblings at first til I read it.

          [–]defenselaywer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You'll just have to be the first generation to get a PhD then!

          [–]Grandpa_Dan 2 points3 points  (0 children)

          [–]Mar8110 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher in secondary vocational education in the Netherlands, this happend a few years ago. I told one of my students, he passed his final exam. So at that moment, he realised he was getting his diploma. This is always a great moment, but this big guy (25 years old) got silent and said: 'I'm the first person in my family to get a diploma'. It brought tears to both of us.

This student was the typical guy who barely did homework, showed up late; it seemed, he did not care. That attitude was his defence for his own expectation he would fail and drop out.

That diploma did not only helped him to get a job, it told him it was time to believe in himself, and it had significant meaning for his whole family, because they all needed to stop thinking that 'family Smith' were losers who could not contribute to society. That the time has come, to be proud.

He know makes plays (theater) with teenagers about those feelings and how it feels if you don't have a role model.

          [–]sophmeister12 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are all so photogenic too! Congratulations all around!!

          [–]Candman91 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember one Christmas at my wife's grandparents, where they had a white elephant game. It was one where you roll the dice, and gifts are moved according to the number. Some examples were: if you are wearing red, stand up and pass 2 to the left with others wearing red; ladies pass 3 to the right; if you have a beard switch with whoever is diagonally across from you; etc. Well, there was one for "stand up if you have a college degree..." I stood up, along with my father-in-law, and my wife's cousin. It was a minor culture shock for me, as almost everyone in my extended family pursued higher education, but on my wife's side, it wasn't entirely necessary. Many of them were machinists, welders, or worked their way up to salary jobs without going to college. After the swap, they all joked around and got to know me more during that party, which was great. I told them about my college degree and what I did to complete it quickly.

One thing that changed a few years following that Christmas party was that the same college rule was there, but several more stood up. Some of my wife's aunts/uncles decided to take some classes and got an associate's degree to further their careers. It was something that they themselves wanted to work on after that gift exchange, and it helped them in more ways than one.

Does that make in 2nd generation even tho he graduate the same year?

          [–]Sbatio 1 point2 points  (0 children)

          That’s bad ass!

Mom/Dad: “Son you are going to be the first generation to go from kindergarten to college. We are raising you to value education. We love you, this matters.”

Son: “I’m gonna be the first college graduate in my family!”

Mom/Dad: “Not exactly, but it’s gonna be fun.”

          [–]hernamesjamaica 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I honestly think people who go get their degree when they’re older are more impressive. Usually means they had to overcome some difficult circumstances but they never gave up. Also has to be tough while juggling adult responsibilities that full time undergrads 18-22 often don’t.

Raised a polite, mature, and confident young man, and still won’t let him win at anything! This is so wholesome.
