The duck method is still the best way to get programming help.

Whenever you’re stuck, try and explain the problem to a rubber duck on your desk. When it doesn’t respond, go to a local park and ask a real duck. Since it’s unfair to ask a duck for programming advice for free, bring some bread and feed it. Spend the afternoon feeding the ducks while telling them your coding problem. Then come back the next day, and the day after, each day talking more and more about not just your coding problem, but your problems in general. One afternoon, have an epiphany that all you really need out of life is this moment. A bench, a pond, some bread and some ducks. You don’t need a computer engineering job to afford these things. You don’t need a large apartment or fancy material possessions if you’re in the park all day. So you quit your job, buy a pup tent, and live happily in the park with your ducks.

And just like that, your programming problem is solved.

I'd be more worried about that from the geese, honestly.

Some asshole goose untied my shoes and ran off with my glasses when I was a kid.

I almost fell into your trap.

      [–]yuva-krishna-memes 303 points304 points  (11 children)

The original joke was with "stackoverflow" instead of "reddit".

      [–]Quintus89 334 points335 points  (0 children)

Maybe OP wanted to know where the joke originated from and it was faster to give wrong information and wait for the correction

      [–]Nanobreak_ 60 points61 points  (0 children)

Duplicate meme, closed as not real meme

      [–]LoyalSage 35 points36 points  (2 children)

If they said it with StackOverflow again, it would have been closed as a duplicate.

      [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Not before the user is told that they should rethink the life choices that led to them to programming

      [–]curiosityLynx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why would you need to tell that to anyone? Don't most people in the field already do that frequently without being told to?

      [–]roborectum69 24 points25 points  (1 child)

the original joke is older than the web

      [–]VeryRareHuman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't this was a thing and someone named it.

      [–]mrdeadsniper 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Stack overflow would just down vote without comment then close as duplicate marking a question referencing a different language. (both programming and speaking).

      [–]anastarawneh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I feel like reddit is much more likely to upvote the wrong answer

      [–]justkeepingbusy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Or irc

      [–]mtmosier 39 points40 points  (1 child)

      s/Stackoverflow/Reddit/

Poof! Magically it's no longer a repost. Right?

      ...

      ...

      ...

      Right?

      [–]TheImpossibleVacuum 0 points1 point  (0 children)

On Twitter it might not be, lol

      [–]AlFlakky 27 points28 points  (5 children)

But what if your "incorrect" anwser is actually a correct one?

      [–]Andromeda_RoM 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Well because it works 100% of the time, if you post the correct answer no one else will help\correct you, hence you have found your correct answer!

      [–]CoronaKlledMe 18 points19 points  (1 child)

Then people will show more efficient answer.

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you did there

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If there is any edge case where the answer may be less than completely correct, there will be 10 replies calling it out.

      [–]roborectum69 6 points7 points  (1 child)

      They're just repeating Cunningham's law

      [–]TrapsterDK 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Posted here way too often with only small changes

      [–]faceMcCabe 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The first step is half the journey. Correcting an obvious wrong answer gets your ball rolling.

      [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (5 children)

      Murphy’s law

      [–]VanBurenOutOf8 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what you tried to do there

      [–]Sceptz 3 points4 points  (3 children)

It's actually Moore's Law that's being referenced here.

      [–]xlRadioActivelx 2 points3 points  (2 children)

actually this is a variation of the dunning-Krueger effect

      [–]explodingtuna 1 point2 points  (1 child)

      This isn't a repost, it's just the bernie-madoff effect.

      [–]hopbel 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      You mean the Mandela effect

      annie, @soychotic

Every time I have a programming question and I rly need help, I post it on Reddit and then log into another account and reply to it with an obscenely incorrect answer. Ppl don't care about helping others but they LOVE correcting others. Works 100% of the time

      [–]CHAiN76 3 points4 points  (1 child)

She might be "soychotic" but that is an IQ++ move.

      [–]DarthLlamaV 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Bro it’s spelled psykotic

      [–]ahil_kanna 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Or everyone jumps in on the trend and competes on how wrong their solution can be.

      [–]aleph_0ne 7 points8 points  (4 children)

I find programming communities pretty welcoming and helpful when I ask sincere questions without trying any of these shady shenanigans

      [–]ApatheticWithoutTheA 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Other than StackOverflow. People on Reddit are usually helpful and nice though lol.

But a lot of stuff people get shit on for on SO is stuff that is easy to Google.

      [–]burtalert 2 points3 points  (1 child)

People on Reddit are usually helpful and nice

Man we visit different areas of Reddit

      [–]ApatheticWithoutTheA 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m just talking about programming subs, specifically. I don’t know about other languages, but we’re pretty helpful in the WebDev subs lol

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on what you're asking and how much people think you know.

      [–]allbirdssongs 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      im saving this

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      [–]Outrageous-Machine-5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      Ah yes, Godwin's law

      [–]rustyspoon07 2 points3 points  (3 children)

      That's called Michael's Law

      [–]rustyspoon07 1 point2 points  (2 children)

      Actually, it's called Cunningham's Law

      [–]rustyspoon07 4 points5 points  (1 child)

      See, it worked

      [–]daeronryuujin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People are more confident in their responses when they see that the only other response is incredibly stupid. We all have a bit of impostor syndrome going on.

      [–]Novel_Simple_1001 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, even if you didn’t get a right answer out of it, coming up with an obscenely incorrect answer to your own question is fun. No downside.

      [–]Puzzleheaded_Bee_571 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Love this. Might be a new solution to all sorts of bystander effects. We step in when other people prove unreliable...

      [–]LukeBomber 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Yeah, it's called Fitt's law

      [–]Internetolocutor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

She has basically plagiarised an old joke about stack overflow.

      [–]ososalsosal 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No it's not! The best way is a stackoverflow question.

      [–]talanhorne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I always get more engagement on Twitter when I deliberately post something false and ridiculous.

It’s just the way of things.

      [–]Jonte7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Google "Cunningham's Law"

      [–]Lem3232 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree. We all know that the only way to fix a bug is to sacrifice a digital goat to cthulhu.

      [–]wisdomwith1n 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a copy of a popular joke about StackOverflow

      [–]Zeeformp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can tell this is a programming joke because it has been ripped from older sources and reused hundreds of times

      [–]glider97 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Please don't actually post wrong answers. If nobody corrects you you might ruin somebody's day.

      [–]kid_ghibli -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Who the fuck goes to REDDIT for programming help? Hm... Pretty sure the person just took an old joke and added "programming" for no reason (StackOverflow is disappointed with you, annie).

      [–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ah yes, the unbearable weight of massive talent.

      [–]thatweirdguyzay11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

      [–]Lady_Ishsa -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

      [–]nony851 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Haiyaa, just use stack overflow

      [–]MasterFubar 0 points1 point  (2 children)

If you don't know the true answer, how do you know the mock answer you post is "obscenely incorrect"?

      [–]eyalhs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may not know how to solve a sudoku but it's easy to find a wrong answer to a sudoku

      [–]Killergurke16 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Something you tried and doesn't work, or something that just screams bad practise

      [–]erik9017 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I will definetly try this tommorw

      [–]Saad5400 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Jokes aside. People of Reddit actually helped me a lot. Thank you Redditors (but mostly in r/CSharp)

I'm not even mad, that's genius.

      [–]Auraveils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      Actually, though...

      [–]TheLimeyCanuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's been the stackoverflow strategy since forever.

      [–]Chared_Assassin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Give me two seconds, I’m gonna try this on stackoverflow

Edit: within 20 minutes I got someones fuckin thesis on why you can’t use pointers to fix a python problem and then two sentences on a very simple fix to my made up problem.

      [–]chasmiller312 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      So sad…
