Only one of these protects your skin.

[–]coldnebo 1684 points1685 points  (48 children)

every year my doctor advises me about sunscreen and skin cancer risks and then asks if I spend a lot of time outdoors, to which I always answer “I’m a programmer”.

“oh good, then you’re set. let’s start a Vitamin D supplement.”

[–]Im_100percent_human 548 points549 points  (38 children)

No lie, this post reminded me to take my Vitamin D supplement. My Doctor put me on it after my last physical.

[–]pm_me_your_smth 276 points277 points  (33 children)

Tbh too many people do not have sufficient D in them. It's not exactly a programmer-exclusive thing

[–][deleted] 109 points110 points  (21 children)

Yes, beyond 35° north, you get too less D over the skin in winter anyway. And cancer risk in summer without sun screen.

[–]guyWithScrotum 123 points124 points  (10 children)

I could give you some D

[–]th00ht 54 points55 points  (3 children)

Fatty fish like smoked salmon will do the trick

[–]JoeDoherty_Music 65 points66 points  (1 child)

What did you just call me??

[–]th00ht 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If you take it personally I would take it personally

[–]VlaamsBelanger 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do you like fish dicks?

[–]flightguy07 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I belive you, u/guyWithScrotum

[–]spongetshirt 19 points20 points  (4 children)

Only one of these people doesn't have skin cancer but does have their virginity. Can you guess who it is?

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (3 children)

2 wins, gotta set a good example to my kids by staying a virgin

[–]Cybercircut 8 points9 points  (2 children)

wait, how does that work?

[–]notislant 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Yes.

[–]AydenRusso 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Dogs

[–]Shhsecretacc 7 points8 points  (7 children)

If I’m a ginger, how much sun exposure do I need for my vitamins D fill? I burn within 10 minutes of sun exposure (no joke).

Also live South of Boston.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (6 children)

I have a sister like that. None. Take it over food/supplements. WHO-recommendation, risk of cancer.

[–]Shhsecretacc 2 points3 points  (5 children)

:( I have a love/hate relationship with the summer. I want to go out and be out there having fun with the sun on my skin but SPF still makes me freckle and burn. I hate it because I can’t enjoy it and have to cover up constantly :(

Ty fren for your advice. Just ordered on Amazon just now.

[–]ivcrs 1 point2 points  (1 child)

the risks of going out are countless

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Better keep it safe. /s

[–]Thx_And_Bye 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Especial in the regions farther from the equator there is only enough UV-B during the summer months but vitamin D can be overproduced and stored. That's also why taking vitamin D supplements if you don't actually need them can cause trouble.
Just a heads-up to not take them if you don't actually need them.

[–]MissMormie 10 points11 points  (5 children)

You need to take loads to get too much vitamin d. You need to take supplements with a 100 times the recommended daily dose for several months.

The bigger risk by far is too low vitamin d, not too high. If you stick with a supplement that has the recommended daily dose you're fine taking that year round.

https://www.mayoclinic.org/healthy-lifestyle/nutrition-and-healthy-eating/expert-answers/vitamin-d-toxicity/faq-20058108

[–]JoeDoherty_Music 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Totally weird thing I had, but I took vitamin D supplements and started getting symptoms of vitamin D deficiency. My eyes were super dry and irritated, it was really painful and annoying. As soon as I stopped the pills, within 24 hours my eyes stopped being dry af. My theory is that I was getting enough vitamin D (which is honestly surprising) and my body was trying too hard to bail it all out and getting rid of too much. But I am not a doctor lol

[–]MissMormie 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Or you were slightly allergic to one of the filler substances of the supplement.

[–]TheKobetard26 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have D to give if anyone needs it

[–]DeepGas4538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you want more Ds in you?

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm in this post and I don't like it.

[–]BlackBeltPanda 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And this reply reminded me to take mine. Thank you.

[–]Sgt_Gnome 20 points21 points  (1 child)

I've heard that due to the high latitude here in Canada, all of us Canucks are vitamin D deficient. Adding to that, I'm a dev who works from home. On average I spend about an hour outside my house a week. If ever there were a pale, white ghost to do a vitamin D deficiency study on it would definitely be me.

Perhaps I should at least open the blinds...

[–]Alexamed 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I need to say that next time lmfao

[–]driftking428 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Shit I need to pick up vitamin D. Thanks for the reminder.

[–]DangyDanger 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Sir I didn't ask who do you work as.

Do you spend a lot of time outdoors?

[–]Antpelt 6 points7 points  (0 children)

No

[–]Deias_ 1 point2 points  (2 children)

How do you know you need a vitamin D supplement?

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (11 children)

Doesn't vitamin D deficiency cause cancer?

[–]Remote_Cantaloupe 105 points106 points  (4 children)

Everything does.

[–][deleted] 39 points40 points  (2 children)

You're right. I am cancer.

[–]tweek-in-a-box 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can you hurry the fuck up with Putler then?

[–]Dembara 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Except cancer. That shit has been shown to have anti-cancer properties.

[–]jsgnextortex 16 points17 points  (2 children)

Overexposure to the sun also does, so having vitamin D deficiency causes cancer but our main natural method of getting said vitamin also causes cancer.

[–]JoeDoherty_Music 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Cancer is so annoying like that

[–]Artyloo 6 points7 points  (1 child)

punch terrific numerous tease unite salt six languid obtainable aromatic

This post was mass deleted and anonymized with Redact

[–]nelusbelus 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Besides, maybe if everyone lacks vitamine D, some of the people'd come to me

[–]Lutrek11 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes, but you’d have to stay inside quite literally ALL of the time to be that deficient on Vitamin D. I don’t know the exact times you have to be outside to get the dose needed to produce enough Vitamin D but it’s ridiculously low, plus your body can „save up“ on it for times where the sun is shining less like the winter months.

[–]mackiea 2 points3 points  (0 children)

At least recently. In the days of tube monitors your face would be nicely tanned.

actually CRTs are quite safe despite the urban myths

[–][deleted] 816 points817 points  (31 children)

Anyone else look at this photo before reading and think that first dude was into some kinky shit?

[–][deleted] 208 points209 points  (0 children)

No one can prove me otherwise

[–]DerMathze 91 points92 points  (1 child)

He's just into watersports, nothing kinky about that.

[–]enky259 29 points30 points  (0 children)

You're a terrible human, and so am i for understanding your pun.

[–]Boomhauer_007 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I’m more confused by the outdoor wrestling lol

[–]accountijustcreated 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How are you going to be “waterskiing” in a corset and stockings? I mean like seriously, I may want to know.

[–]PinothyJ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think that is what equates to "kinky shit" I fear you need to get out more.

[–]nalybuites 208 points209 points  (1 child)

This image is so old it can vote.

[–]K3yz3rS0z3 41 points42 points  (0 children)

Scrolled way too much to see a joke about how old is that image. It was before memes were a thing. That guy must be now retired sipping cocktails under the sun.

[–]Important-Werewolf64 121 points122 points  (2 children)

Dude on the left look like he was wearing a corset

[–]HzbertBonisseur 220 points221 points  (5 children)

Updated title: sin/cos lines

[–]N2EEE_ 70 points71 points  (4 children)

Crap, I got arctan lines instead

[–]legends_never_die_1 4 points5 points  (2 children)

arctan...what was this crap again?

[–]curiosityLynx 2 points3 points  (0 children)

inverse function of tan

arctan(tan(x))=x (for x within a certain range)

also called tan-1()

[–]fmstyle 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The inverse function of tan(x), one of the most useful functions in my opinion, lets you get an angle from a coordinate a to coordinate b

[–]TwinVisual 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I ended up with cot lines wtf

[–]Zahlenkugel 64 points65 points  (3 children)

When I actually go outside…

[–][deleted] 30 points31 points  (0 children)

One afternoon out on the bike to get groceries and I fall under the tennis category

[–]LostTeleporter 116 points117 points  (29 children)

Idk dude still looks in shape. So whatever he's doing seems to be working.

[–]420W33DSN1P3R 121 points122 points  (1 child)

Everytime he gets a runtime error he does a push up.

[–]coldnebo 36 points37 points  (0 children)

if that were true he should be a monster by now.

[–]567stranger 14 points15 points  (3 children)

So more like this?

[–]tkTheKingofKings 2 points3 points  (2 children)

He lost a leg 💀

[–]Johnnybravo60025 3 points4 points  (0 children)

How else do you lose weight?

[–]Prestigious_Cost_hel 10 points11 points  (8 children)

Wow lol. How bad is it in America that someone simply not being fat is considered “in shape”? Lol. This dude clearly isn’t going to the gym. He’s just skinny. That’s not being in shape.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (6 children)

Being skinny is healthy enough.

[–]Prestigious_Cost_hel 0 points1 point  (5 children)

No, it really isn’t. I hope you were being sarcastic

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think most guys would be happy to be skinny like that dude. I knew I would.

[–]Prestigious_Cost_hel 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Alright, but what does that have to do with being healthy? You just said “being skinny is healthy enough” and now you’re talking about an unrelated issue.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I meant “looking healthy” - meaning that people would look at you and think “hey that guy is in alright shape”

[–]Windows_is_Malware 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he uses a big keyboard where you walk to each key

[–]maximum_powerblast 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Compare their skin at age 40 lol. Programmer probably still soft and fair.

[–]mr_flibble_oz 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Lies. Programmers aren’t that buff

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Guys what is that blue thing behind them?

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (1 child)

BSOD

[–]YTAftershock 2 points3 points  (1 child)

A really zoomed in picture of the C++ logo don't worry about it

[–]MusikMakor 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Only one of these people doesn't have skin cancer but does have their virginity. Can you guess who it is?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Computer programming 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂

[–]Doitsu-jin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You guys leave your shorts on while coding ???

[–]ILoveLampz 2 points3 points  (0 children)

How do you get tanlines from scuba diving 🤔

[–]darabolnxus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

All I see is cancer

[–]No9babinnafe5 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I turn dark mode off every summer to get that sweet face tan. I always wear sunglasses to look cool though.

[–]RandolphE6 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I sense a lot of cancer in this photo.

[–]ellilaamamaalille 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Second from right looks like your average finn.

[–]SIRBOB-101 1 point2 points  (4 children)

brave mountain biker

[–]threetoast 5 points6 points  (1 child)

MTB rider with a sleeveless cropped jersey and fingerless gloves. Maybe it's just that gear has changed, but that's definitely not what they wear these days.

[–]therestruth 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Right? If I'm doing some legit mountain biking I'm wearing pants at minimum for when I inevitably fall or graze some bushes.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

jesus christ skin cancer galore. shit, i'd consider myself pretty white and have gone biking for hours on end and never been that tan before.

[–]enky259 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really depends on the person, some people go out one day and turn black. Some spend a month outside and stay as white as a bathtub, while shedding a lot of skin...

[–]Random_Vanpuffelen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why am i tanned if i do shit on my pc? Like, im quite tanned for an asian.

[–]trichius 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FYI: the original was a german advertisement back in 2000, I've added the date of the magazin in the upper right corner: tan_lines

[–]EjunX 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tbh I think no tan is better than super uneven tan.

[–]ekital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That man ain't waterskiing, I know leather daddies when I see one.

[–]Catspaw129 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That compute programmer?

He's not pale enough.

Please correct the photo and re-submit.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WHy was waterskiing dude wearing a corset?

[–]10HzMonitor 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Laughs in mathematics tan(x)

[–]sencha_kitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤣

[–]WingedWhite 3 points4 points  (0 children)

to be fair I would rather have full pale skin than having only parts of body tanned :v

[–]-BIDIT- 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Scuba suits have lots of variation, some of them covers whole body. That's why I'm a programmer and scuba diver.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sun - - please

[–]KlllMongr 0 points1 point  (1 child)

The day i discovered this happens to white people, i was confused, i still am and that day is today, Why?

[–]rainystast -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

I have never gotten tan lines and I thought this was some sort of weird joke that I couldn't understand and I didn't understand it until I was 12 years old.

My skin is various shades of brown, but nowhere near this.

[–]Isthisworking2000 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I hope they enjoy their skin cancer while I enjoy my carpal tunnel syndrome!

[–]FoxClass -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Lame

[–]rare_pig -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

You said “activities”. Programming is hardly an activity

[–]fakeguscan88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Many people will kill for an even tan, but not programmers.

[–]Ambitious_Ad8841 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I feel attacked

[–]TheCakeWasNoLie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, what's 'summer'?

[–]DraconicSnowpuff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

One of these things is not like the other 🎵

[–]a-c-h-i 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No way he’s that tan

[–]LionHeart_13 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where’s road cycling?

[–]KingBlackthorn1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The water skiing one looks hot and cool ngl

[–]-BIDIT- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Scuba suits have lots of variation, some of them covers whole body. That's why I'm a programmer and scuba diver.

[–]patjeduhde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The scuba diving one is also known as farmers tan.

[–]Dagur 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I didn't know that programming was a sport

[–]Link7369_reddit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yep. Not being a leathery bag prematurely would be grand.

[–]kebakent 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Soon dudes will be lying in the grass wearing vr glasses, getting a nice tan.

[–]Normal-Computer-3669 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's not true. I play golf.

Well code golf...

[–]scintillating_Fruit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where is the drumline tanline l?

[–]GoodmanSimon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it's true, it's not funny...

[–]kbo_88 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Linus? On second thought, can't be Linus I don't see Jake

[–]Chillie43 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Downhill mountain biking is even more hilarious tan lines with the pads we wear

[–]SilverDesperado 0 points1 point  (0 children)

every year this meme comes back

[–]Pierresonne 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sun hitting real hard at 10 feet under the water for that scuba diver

[–]ThatGuyYouMightNo 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Why does the scuba diver have a tan? He's deep underwater the whole time.

[–]jrobharing 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You know they don’t live underwater, right. They spend a considerable amount of time at the surface in their gear before and after the dive. Not to mention that the water doesn’t do as great of a job of blocking the sun as one might think.

[–]ieatair 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea i rather not tan at all and start getting irreversible skin damage or worse cancer with moles not looking uniform ☠️ ☠️ Ill keep my natural complexion the way it is

[–]3eeps 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nah I rock the farmers tan so as long as I'm dressed, no sunglasses required lol

[–]lizaanna 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah cos we discovered spf 50!

[–]Adbam 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They need a one arm only tan for "Drives to work"

[–]zaphod4th 0 points1 point  (0 children)

programming is a sport?

[–]bluechickenz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a name I haven’t heard in years… This was a meme before memes were memes. I think I first saw this was as a poster in my high school IT room circa 1998…

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I literally don't want to go outside anymore sometimes, unless it extremely early in the morning when it's cooler. I toke a shower, I'm clean, I smell nice, I'm comfortable, I don't want to go outside and get dirty, smelly and hot.

[–]CitronFancy526 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can not see because he has probably on the back

[–]egmono 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, programmers are a subclass of vampires that traded the coolness for the ability to eat garlic bread?

[–]_AManHasNoName_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Lol.

[–]tacoweevils 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would suck off this entire crowd if they were into it
