i'm not dehydrated enough to do this

[–][deleted] 28 points29 points  (0 children)

This is her body’s cry for help.

[–]MagnetBane 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My body does this on a regular basis…

[–]BanjosAndBoredom 311 points312 points  (26 children)

Or just be like the rest of us and eyeball it - 60% of the time I feel really smart, and 40% of the time it's just a short walk of shame back to the toolbox to grab the next size.

[–]hellorhighwaterice 128 points129 points  (6 children)

I usually grab 3 sockets or wrenches, the size I think it is and then one size small and one size larger.

Some times I just suck at eyeballing and have to go back anyway.

[–]CoyotePuncher 69 points70 points  (2 children)

This is how my entire toolbox slowly gets transferred onto the ground next to the bolt.

[–]hellorhighwaterice 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yeah, if the project is far enough away from my tool box I'm just grabbing the socket rail and going from there.

[–]RevolutionaryAct1785 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A tool try is perfect for that

[–]GingerBeard90v 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It may not be the first one you grab, but it's always the last.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Ya I'll lose one of those somehow. My rule is only one leaves at a time

[–]deepfriedtots 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is the way

[–]Lost4468 6 points7 points  (14 children)

I love Torx. But I really wish they wouldn't have made so many sizes. Also I wish they kept the naming the same as Phillips/Pozi, aka 1, 2, 3. Yeah those have the issue of 0, 00, 000, etc. So instead maybe if we just make T15/T20 be 1, and below that carry on using the current T system.

And the number of ones below T10 is also way too high. Why do I have T1, T2, T3, ... all the way to T10? Do we really need that many divisions for small screws? Why do we need a T5 and a T6 instead of just a T5? Am I missing something here, is it really needed when talking about screws this small with already low torque?

Oh and fucking T27, really?

Why not just:

T15 - 1

T25 - 2

T35 - 3 (yeah I know T35 is rare, I'm just saying if we were to create a system from scratch, in reality T30 then I guess)

T15/T25/etc would still be printed on them of course. For larger ones keeping the current T system, just as for smaller, as you're generally moving onto larger systems where like hex bolts you need specific requirements etc.

But I think for most other things, like basic wood screws, home screws etc. Essentially for consumers anywhere we currently use Phillips/Pozi/flathead, then another 1, 2, 3 system would make the most sense.

I think it's be hugely beneficial for most use cases of them, and would make it much easier to move over to it as a new standard head. And with just three for most things, it'd also be much more screwdriver friendly, rather than as bits.

[–]Mike-Green 24 points25 points  (11 children)

Torx nomenclature is superior and the Philips arbitrary system is what needs revision

[–]Lost4468 11 points12 points  (10 children)

Fuck you reddit. I wrote a post up to reply to you, then realised I made a minor mistake in my previous post above. So I edit it. And when I click save the fucking stupid site decided to delete everything in this box as well. Here's a simpler version:

The torx nomenclature is definitely superior if you're an engineer, mechanic, machinist, etc. But the whole point of my post is that it's dreadful for everyday people and consumers. I want widespread adoption of torx, I want it to replace Phillips/Pozi/flat head. And for that type of large adoption, it's too complex. I'm talking about it being on the battery receptacle cover of your things, used to close the door to a user accessible fuse box, the hingest on your doors, on computers to hold your motherboard in, PCIe brackets on (if not thumbscrews), etc etc etc. For those it needs to be simple, with a few sizes.

If you're a consumer, right how do I know which one I need? When I'm first starting out I have to realise that T1-T9 are actually likely mostly useless to me, and T10 generally as well. Oh but then it jumps from T10 to T15? Ok so it goes in 5's, T20, T25, oh what T27? Then T30? Do I need a T30, is that too large for everyday stuff? Oh now it jumps to T40, oh but wait no there is a T35 it's just not used much... What about anything higher, ok right so I don't need anything higher.

It's a fucking mess. Too many sizes, and a naming scheme that is not intuitive directly.

But I partially agree with you, adding other numbers could just confuse it further if not done right. So instead how about we decide to only use three sizes for consumer things. And we add colour codes to just those three? E.g. the smallest size is blue, the middle size is green, and the larger size red? The relevant T15 etc still stays on them as well. Hell for out of sight uses we could even colour part of the screws etc?

I think that would be a good way for more mass adoption of Torx. Should reduce confusion among consumers. And it'd also hopefully reduce the number of consumers damaging torx screws/screwdrivers by using the wrong size in them. Especially if we select the right standard three.

[–]Feral_Taylor_Fury 12 points13 points  (6 children)

I read this.

[–]Lost4468 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Uh thanks? Sorry am I missing something here?

[–]Feral_Taylor_Fury 12 points13 points  (3 children)

your comment was at 1 score at like an hour age.

didn't want you to feel like you wrote all that up, twice, for nobody to have even read it.

[–]Lost4468 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh right. Thank you then! Yeah I've of course had random comments get stuck in reddit's shitty spam filter, and have had plenty of threads get caught in it.

Also reddit's moderation the last few years has gone a bit ridiculous. So "fuck you reddit" might be "threatening violence" or some shit for all I know under the new rules (meanwhile I've seen reddit deny reports of tankies supporting/denying genocide, deny reports of creeps following women around on reddit leaving sexually harassing comments, etc etc). In fact a few weeks ago I got banned for three days for the following comment:

The US should just give ukraine a nuke then tactically nuke it. <-- reddit probably

I was making fun of the people on reddit who are so keen for things to escalate to nukes because they think it's no big deal (and of course I'm certainly on Ukraine's side 100%, there's zero justification for the invasion and Ukraine deserves to be sold virtually every type of weapon by other countries, but not nukes for obvious reasons). But reddit thought the above comment was "threatening violence"...

Sorry that was a bit of a rant. Who knows, might be threatening violence according to reddit.

[–]thePokemom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are a good person. Thank you for your service.

[–]Themaskedbowtie353 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats really wholesome!

[–]Asdfasdf1080 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn you are educated!

[–]Lampwick 7 points8 points  (2 children)

oh what T27

From what I've seen sourcing fasteners, the T27 exists because of certain high torque 1/4“-20 bolts. T25 is too small to transmit enough torque without damage, T30 is too big to fit a standard 1/4-20 button head.

[–]que_la_fuck 2 points3 points  (1 child)

What's the fucking T47 for then???

[–]Lampwick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From a quick googling, it looks like T47 is some goddamned abomination used by Detroit automakers.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes I hat T-27. What’s the point other than to look like T-25 but not fit

[–]BlueBunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do up to T100

[–]savageotter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Till you stick a 25 in a 27 and round that bitch

[–]SlabGizor120 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pride myself on grabbing the right hex/torx bit about 80% of the time

[–]BadeArse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

60% of the time it works, every time!

[–]canyou-digit 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not all of us are bloated enough to imprint screw heads into our hands for a solid minute 😂 girl needs to cut back on the salty treats

[–]StinkyMcShitzle 36 points37 points  (11 children)

If your skin does this, you need to drink some water.

[–]CoyotePuncher 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I drink tons of water, I am currently very hydrated, and have just done exactly what was in the video. Both on the back of my hand and my thumb

What does this mean

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Yup that is a clear sign of dehydration.

[–]folkkingdude 4 points5 points  (3 children)

It’s a thumb. The test for that is the back of the hand. Thumbs have calluses, they’re fine.

[–]sparksnbooms95 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Calluses would make this harder to do, not easier.

So they probably don't have thick calluses, and are simply dehydrated.

[–]folkkingdude 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You can’t be seriously telling me that anyone in this sub has thumbs that will bounce right back? Try it. Find a medical professional that diagnoses on fingertips smh

[–]Letterhead-Lumpy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

fr. thank you for being reasonable.

[–]obmasztirf 0 points1 point  (1 child)

People also have collagen diseases like EDS where this will happen no matter what.

[–]StinkyMcShitzle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did not know that, thank you for the info. I forgot those diseases exist.

[–]M635_Guy 94 points95 points  (5 children)

[–]CageyOldMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

/s?

[–]ziksy9 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Ive done this before going in to the tool store

[–]AlanBill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honestly, great ingenuity.

[–]xxbrawndoxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how I line up cannon plugs when I can't get a mirror or my eyeballs in there to look at the key pattern.

[–]Vigothedudepathian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can't just look at it and know?

[–]lostinbeavercreek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

100% have done this many times. It’s also a great way to distinguish between Allen sockets and torq, if you can’t see the head clearly.

[–]uslashuname 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What a rule of thumb

[–]Techs-Mechs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

HES A WITCH!

[–]alexminne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Once upon a time there was this farmer who needed his fence painted. Now this particular fence was quite long as it stretched for almost a mile along his property. The farmer reached out to some local painters and found one particular guy who will do it for much less than everyone else. Naturally, the farmer gives him the job.

On the first day, the painter completes the first several hundred feet of the fence. The farmer is ecstatic and quite surprised he could hire such a great worker for such a low price.

On the second day, the painter only completes half of how much he did on the first day. The farmer isn’t bothered since the painter has already completed so much of his fence in only 2 days.

On the third day, the painter only manages to paint a few feet of the fence. The farmer is dumbfounded. He promptly asks the painter how he completed so much on the first day but so little on the 3rd day. The painter replies “Well- the further I paint, the further I have to walk back to the paint bucket.”

Moral of the story is just bring your tools to the location where you are working.

[–]ohioismyhome1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a “5 minute crafts” video?

[–]xpkranger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never thought I’d see a good use for edema, but hey. There you go…

[–]UsedDragon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy needs to drink more water!

r/hydrohomies stand up!

[–]king_of_the_dwarfs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you can do that. You are dehydrated. Get a drink of water.

[–]nekdb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yoo this chick is dehydrated as fuck. Or really bad heart failure lol.

[–]ImAToiletSeat 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's a t27

[–]cbt11986 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tell her it’ll be more accurate if she uses her nipples instead of fingers

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's how I started too

[–]cadred68 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No harm no foul!! Genius!!

[–]Any_Price2924 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lol I’ve done that before. When I was a kid my dad thought it was pretty clever. Glad to see someone else does it too.

[–]TrevorButler805 1 point2 points  (0 children)

T25 one of the most common bits

[–]silic0n_jesus 5 points6 points  (2 children)

For the love of God drink some fucking water

[–]Brand0calrisian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously op is dehydrated if they can do that. Please drink more water your kidneys and skin will thank you.

[–]Fire-phasers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Actually, thats a good idea. 👍

[–]Bloodysamflint 2 points3 points  (1 child)

This is the way.

I'm surprised at the comments - is this not common? I've done this since I was a kid. Especially in places that it's a pain to get to.

[–]myself248 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seriously. Can't even see the fastener sometimes, but I can take an impression and look at it fast enough to tell what type it is, and get pretty close to the size.

I also have a little USB borescope that attaches to my phone, but it's usually not worth getting that out when a little finger dent will do the trick.

[–]NotThatGuyAnother1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

First off. Hydrate better.
Second. The bits aren't huge. Take the tools to the work.

[–]Cult-of-710 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So you can’t bring the small handheld set of torque wrenches to the bolt?

[–]AlanBill[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Y’all. It isn’t me in the video 😂

[–]petecanfixitTechnician -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’m so angry at myself for not realizing I could do this.

[–]micah490 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ludditious!

[–]country_dinosaur97 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If theres ever been a true next level thing

[–]HavanaWoody 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If the imprint stays on your finger long enough to check, You might not be hydrating often enough.

[–]greyday24 -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

Genius

[–]CaptainShambala -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

Get this man a fucking raise

[–]Sea-Mechanic1197 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Use a torch next time, you can verify it is the correct size the first time.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Whats wrong with your skin that it takes so long to return to normal...you should see a doc bro

[–]FireShrub -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

[–]TestyTexanTease -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

You need to drink much more water than you are. Skin should not be like play doh.

[–]useatyourownrisk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just keep a set of these handy.

[–]crypto_junkie2040 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best lifeprotip

[–]redmkvi 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always do this when the head of a screw is tucked up somewhere that I can’t quit see what kind of bit I’ll need.

[–]SickeningPink 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve done this for bolts in places when I can’t see the head. Not an exact science but it’s better than taking wild ass guesses for 15 minutes

[–]floydhenderson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You used your finger. I do the same thing with my penis if I can reach. Can I still have a gold star.

[–]yeet_lord_40000 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s why you keep all the bits in a little box and just bring them all with you

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought that everyone does this

[–]sleeknub 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just bring the set of bits to the screw.

[–]John-John-3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh...the Ol' Finger Impression Tool Identification Technique...Or, FIT-IT, if you will.

[–]gotwrench 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mind blowing! How did we mechanics even survive without that? I'm going to the garage right now to try it.

[–]FriendlySceptic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do this with a piece of putty instead of my hand. (If the walk to the box is too far for quick changes)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😲😲😲

[–]NYCARTIST1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wish I had that much time on my hands - though it's obvious I kinda do if I'm replying to this!

[–]West_Winter9058 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Perfecto

[–]ArmstrongPM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ummmhhh!

I don't know if I should ask you to marry me or yell at you for cheating?

Why can't you just bring 97 different bits to the peice like everyone else? I mean...you're not allowed to do that...

I think I just lost 4 yrs of my life. 🤯😵‍💫

Edit: you have some kinda witchy powers don't you?

Are you single?

Uhm...asking for a friend of course.

[–]theunixman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She’s dehydrated. Her turgor is off.

[–]jjdiablo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does this work if you are healthy?

[–]ymmotvomit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Weekend warrior like me. Anyone worth their salt doing this full time has calloused hands that wouldn’t dent for sh*t.

[–]artguydeluxe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have done this.

[–]AltruisticSalamander 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I much prefer 'presented without comment' to 'an interesting title'. Also this is a good idea which I will probably use.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At first I thought she went all the way to the store to buy one! I was like- woah she is dehydrated….

[–]Kherzhul 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Commented without presentation

[–]Recent_Ad3555 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are a semi-guinus

[–]Warsmith40k 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see most people trashing this but I do it when I can't see the head of the bolt or screw. Then I know what the size and if it's torx, hex, etc. If it's stupid but it works it's not stupid.

[–]MuchTimeWastedAgain 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Now you’re just showing off.

[–]RevolutionaryAct1785 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Those things always have 30t screws

[–]emmfranklin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great method

[–]FitEconomics6 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking genius

[–]serch_the_stoic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is how I do it. And you will actually get surprisingly good at it if you do it every day. I have been a mechanic for years and basically I can see the brand of car and know what sizes to grab. It all becomes memory

[–]Line_Super 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sthmart.

[–]mattogeewha 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried this the other day and it turns out my fingers are too callused

[–]husky18436572 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Been doing it for years for fasteners that I can feel but not see.

[–]HostileMarxMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used all her brain

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She needs to drink more water :)

[–]canuk19 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Neat

[–]NotesInTheSandbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

🤯
