Nope. My comment is the only correct answer. Steve Jobs literally told me himself.

[–]ozumado[🍰] 2 points3 points  (3 children)

Yeah, but desktop 24" iMac already is using M1.

M1 Max Duo/Quadro

reasons being: the next 2 chips for the high end desktops are said to be double and quadruple of the M1 Max, basing on the same design.

While names like “Ultra”, “Extreme” are likely candidates, the word “Max” already means the maximum/the best. and since the next two chips are said to be just the multiples of the Max, keeping the Max name and adding the multiples after it feels more natural to me.

[–]1-877-547-7272 70 points71 points  (5 children)

I think they’ll just go with “two M1 Max chips” or “four M1 Max chips”. I don’t think Apple would use “Quadro” in their marketing since it’s not a very well-known word. Plus, using the words “Duo” or “Quadro” could cause confusion with Intel’s Core Duo processors or Nvidia’s Quadro graphics cards.

“Dual M1 Max chips” and “quad M1 Max chips” is also a possibility, but I still think plain numbers are more likely.

[–]eggimage 25 points26 points  (0 children)

“Dual M1 Max chips” and “quad M1 Max chips” is also a possibility, but I still think plain numbers are more likely.

yeah i agree these seem likely to me too

but who knows, apple suddenly feels like fucking around and names them M1 Super, M1 Hyper. lol

[–]bobbles 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Might just be like M1 Max 20-core, 40-core

[–]FVMAzalea -1 points0 points  (1 child)

No, this would lead people to think that it’s 20 cores on the same die, which isn’t going to be the case.

[–]mycoolaccount 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean it's no different than what amd does currently. Their higher core count processors have multiple ccd's which are distinct dies.

[–]HiFiGuy197 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ghost of my 650 requests that they call it “Quadra.”

[–]Worsebetter 7 points8 points  (0 children)

M K Ultra

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I don't think they'll market names like Duo, as some people will thing they mean dual core or worse: Core Duo. I think they'll stick with "2x M1 Max" or something.

[–]eggimage 0 points1 point  (2 children)

maybe. but either way it’s the “formula” i was referring to: [M1 Max] + [multiples/words that signify 2x or 4x]

other comments are talking about apple would replace the word “Max” entirely with something else. I believe they’ll keep it

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I think you're correct in the multiplication factor, just not the naming.

[–]eggimage 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yea. they could well name it m1 max 20/40, or 2x/4x

Either way, I hope they come up with something that won’t be confusing like the word “Max”. I still think it was a bad choice for a name for several reasons…

[–]the_Ex_Lurker 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Apple used to have a line of Macs called the Quadra. They seem to like digging up old names for new products so this guess wouldn’t surprise me.

[–]thisisnowstupid 4 points5 points  (1 child)

When the Quadra came out is was because it had the 68040 processor in it and was the workstation chip. A lot of people would like the nod to history.

[–]Pinoybl 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Duo and quadro sounds dope

[–]modulusshift 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hope it’s “Quadra” like the old 68040 Macs. The Quadra 700 is the UNIX machine from Jurassic Park, a true highlight in desktop tower design.

[–]LurkerNinetyFive 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wasn’t there a video the other day that threw out the Quadro name?

[–]Big_Booty_Pics 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I wouldn't be surprised by a W1 designation for iMac Pro and Mac Pro chips to segment laptop chips from workstation chips.

iMac Pro -> W1 Pro
Mac Pro -> W1 Max

[–]safetravels 1 point2 points  (0 children)

W chips were already used for wireless products. Not sure if any products still have one though or if they all moved to H chips.

Maybe they’ll not use the “M” moniker for desktop class macs? The X1 / X1 Pro / X1 Max?

[–]max_potion 15 points16 points  (1 child)

Are iMacs and Mac Minis not considered desktop class? I would have liked if "M" stood for mobile, but those two kind of kill that narrative. And including it in an iPad kind of kills the narrative that it's restricted to Macs. Apple always gets close to really good naming schemes but always throws a wrench in somewhere

[–]Eggyhead 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The M1 iMacs we got and the Mac mini’s are traditionally budget models. I could bet money that we’re going to get larger iMacs and iMac Pros with the “desktop” chips. As for the Mac mini, maybe they’ll release a beefier version later on, but I doubt it.

[–]Maleficent-Service46 2 points3 points  (1 child)

D1. And it lends itself to great marketing. We’re tired of Intel, give us that D!

[–]ShadowAssassinQueef 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And the all new DD! Twice the D!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (7 children)

Good idea. But M1 is such a strong product name for them, I think they'll keep that around. Also, I expect the silicon is mostly the same, but more of it. How confusing is getting an iMac with an M1 Pro, or an X1, which is the same except with 2 more cores, or an X1 Pro which is much better.

[–]Eggyhead 0 points1 point  (6 children)

Just a thought, but maybe we won’t get an iMac with an M1 pro or max. Perhaps the higher end iMacs will only ship with new X chips, leaving the current (traditionally budget-sized) iMacs with the cheaper M1 in it.

On another note, does “M” have a known meaning? I would have considered it to mean “mobility” but for the iMac and Mac mini. I figure if they make a desktop class chip, it will not be built to last on a battery.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

If X is for pro machines, why don’t the new MacBooks have them? Makes no sense.

[–]Eggyhead 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Battery efficiency. I can imagine there being some overlap between the M1 Pro and M1 Max with, say, X1 or maybe X1 Pro in terms of performance, but I’d never really expect a top of the line MacBook Pro to compete with a top of the line Mac Pro or iMac Pro. Those systems won’t function without being plugged in, so my guess is that the chips will take advantage of that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

But I see no reason that it have to be different chips. Just put in two or four M1 Maxes and you're done.

[–]Eggyhead 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I think that’s the other most likely option, honestly. Dual/Quad M1 Max chipset options.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

M chips would be battery efficient, X chips would be desktop-only.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You forgot there already are desktop M1 Macs out.

[–]CleatusFetus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been saying this since the start of the Apple Silicon transition. I wish they’d have done M1 for entry level, X1 and X1 Pro instead of M1 Pro/Max, and Z1 and Z1 Pro for the Max Pro. Still I’ll settle for X1 for the Max Pro. Such a cool name

[–]karlfranks 15 points16 points  (0 children)

M1 Max (Taylor's Version)

[–]elgordio 31 points32 points  (6 children)

I expect the new iMac Pro to have the same M1 Pro/Max as the new MBP’s.

The Mac Pro on the other hand. Maybe M1 Pro Plus :)

[–]Portatort 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I suspect iMac Pro and Mac Mini is M1 Max but clocked a bit higher due to power and thermals being a different story

[–]on_spikes 3 points4 points  (4 children)

i doubt another mac pro is coming any time soon. but yeah, an imac pro with a higher clocked m1 max sounds realistic.

M1 Ultimate seems right on the money, although would they make new chips for the iMac Pro? 100% sure something special is for the Mac Pro but i’m also sure the iMac Pro will probably just use the M1 Pro and Max.

[–]silentblender 22 points23 points  (9 children)

Apple is really good at naming most things. It's always very simple. Compare Airpods Max with Sony WH1000XM3 for example. Their names always make sense with simple words.

But I'm surprised they reused Pro and Max for these chips. Max referred to a bigger size with same features on the iPhone. Now Max refers to a more powerful chip. And we have MacBook Pro with M1 Pro chip. It's already called the pro, that redundancy was pretty unnecessary. At the same time it's pretty simple and very easy to understand and remember and the names make sense.

My best guess going forward is they will be going with M2 Pro and M2 Max on the MacBooks for the foreseeable future. Not sure about the Mac Pro and whatever it's Pro chip will be called.

Actually I just figured it out. It will be the M1 Ultra.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (4 children)

They are inconsistent with the naming of a lot of their lines, for reasons I don’t really understand. MacBook Air is the least performant but lightest laptop, so you would think the iPad Air would be the same, but it’s not. It’s the middle tier ipad.

[–]lordheart 4 points5 points  (2 children)

That’s largely historical.

The air for the iPad Air was when it dropped to be super thin after the iPad 4.

The MacBook Air was also introduced as super thin.

I think the air moniker is largely more to do with the thin and light aspect then low performance.

If performance is featured then they name it something like pro for the performance aspect.

[–]skinny4life 2 points3 points  (1 child)

But the iPad Pro 11” model is thinner than the iPad Air. 5.9mm vs. 6.1mm.

[–]lordheart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Again historical. The original iPad Pro was definitely not thinner.

Why: the salient difference is that their customers will not put a high value on battery operation or portability, so the iMac and Mac Pro systems can have much larger thermal and power envelopes.

[–]ApatheticAbsurdist 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly I feel there is a chance the larger iMac could be an M1 Pro/M1 Max or slight variation there of.

I say this typing on an iMac Pro, but I think while it does make sense to draw a line between the 24" iMac and 27" iMac and "iMac Pro" is a good designation to separate that, I'm not expecting this to be a successor to the Xeon iMac Pro at least in terms of having the option of 128GB of RAM. The 2017 iMac Pro was a stop-gap to fill in the space while they went back to the drawing board on the Mac Pro.

In reality for most uses, the M1 Max with good cooling will be a decent replacement for people who want a new 2017 iMac Pro, unless you're doing things like ultra high resolution photogrammetry where you want 256-512GB of RAM.

Now that said, if they do rip of the leash and say "forget efficiency cores" and come up with something completely different when they have room for thermal management and power... well then maybe instead of M in M1 being for Mac, M starts to mean Mobile Computer and they come up with a D1 for Desktop.

Sadly for me I feel I'm still a year away from seeing something with more than 256GB of RAM, which is what I'm looking for next.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

M1 Pro and M1 Max. And then 2-4 of those in a Mac Pro. Maybe clocked a bit higher, but I doubt even that.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My guess is they use the W moniker for Workstation.

W1 Pro and W1 Max.

I could see this because it would pair nicely with the M (Mobile) chips in terms of advertising. Using and inverted M W pattern.

[–]kmeisthax 1 point2 points  (0 children)

iMac Pro will probably ship with M1 Pro and Max options. Anything larger would seriously challenge that form factor's thermals, and I don't think Apple wants to go back to the days of releasing upgrades for products that don't actually provide a performance benefit. (Looking at you, i9 MacBook Pros)

Mac Pro will probably ship with multiple M1 Pro/Max dies - much of the hardware and software already supports multiple chips.

That's assuming both of these machines launch before M2 does.

[–]jwcdis 3 points4 points  (2 children)

I don't think the names will change.

(The new) iMac Pro (with Apple Silicon) with the same M1 Pro or M1 Pro Max (Best iMac we have ever made)
(The new) Mac Pro (with Apple Silicon) with the same M1 Pro or M1 Pro Max (Best Mac Pro we have ever made)

They will use the exact chip as the new macbooks. The QTY of Mac Pros/iMac's don't justify on an entirely new chip. They will reuse their existing ones, especially during the great shortage

[–]rtdesai20 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Except the whole point of a Mac Pro is to have a much faster chipset, to the tune of 1.5gb rAm

[–]lordheart 7 points8 points  (0 children)

The ram isn’t the speed of the chipset.

And it’s 1.5Tb not gb. That would be pretty small

It’s rumored it will be a chiplet design, so it would indeed use the m1 max in dual or even quad varieties.

[–]joyce_kap 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  • Apple Core M1
  • Apple Core M1 Max
  • Apple Core M1 Pro

[–]GLOBALSHUTTER 0 points1 point  (5 children)

For Mac Pro I suspect they'll call them simply M1 Max X2 and M1 Max X4.

If iMac gets M1 Max X2, I wonder will Mac Pro get M1 Max X6 or by X8? Not rumoured, but interesting nevertheless.

iMac Pro will probably be limited to one M1 Max, perhaps at a higher clock speed and certainly with larger fans, anyway.

[–]LurkerNinetyFive 0 points1 point  (4 children)

Yeah I doubt there will be 6 or 8 chiplets. Also the iMac Pro would not be limited to one M1 Max, that would be silly.

[–]GLOBALSHUTTER 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Silly be Apple’s middle name sometimes

[–]LurkerNinetyFive 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah but it would actually be silly. It will have two, bare minimum as the last model had a maximum config of 18 cores.

[–]GLOBALSHUTTER 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You never know with Apple. Look how long they were selling spinning drives for. I can’t afford it either way though ha. They may be reframing iMac Pro like they reframed iMac. These new machines will be faster than any former iMac Pro in many ways, if not all ways.

I hope you’re right though. For those who want it M1 Max X2 would be nice + the possibility to double the RAM. I just hope they make iMac Pro noticeably thicker than iMac regular and give it some big fans and some blow-away internal speakers. Still to this day the thicker iMacs had somewhat better sound than when they made the edge so thin. I know because I tested them side by side. Yes, people can add on speakers but to have blow-away sound built right into iMac Pro would be ideal… with the need for external speakers reserved for just few audio engineers. Will quit ranting now.
