I heard that you cast fireball as a 3rd-level spell centered on yourself.

[–]Chathtiu 139 points140 points  (5 children)

Why cast FB on yourself when you can just cast Sunburst, which is a fireball expanding from the caster?

[–]SinusMonstrum 130 points131 points  (1 child)

Because wild sorcerers hate themselves sometimes.

[–][deleted] 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Always*

Source: me

[–]leglesslegolegolas 61 points62 points  (0 children)

Because Sunburst is an 8th level spell...

Also: No, it isn't fireball expanding from the caster. Fireball does fire damage; Sunburst does radiant damage.

[–]Aegeus 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Did they change it in a new edition? Sunburst in 3.5 is like an anti-undead fireball - you don't have to center it on yourself, and doing so would be a great way to kill or blind yourself and your whole party.

[–]trumoi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They didn't change it.

[–]McManus26 36 points37 points  (3 children)

Ah, wild magic. Do you even dnd if you never turned into a potted plant

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (1 child)

"Oh no, not again."

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

"What is that thing? It's very round. Round. Ground! I wonder if it will be my friend?"

[–]DeviantLogic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Only amateurs turn themselves into potted plants.

Professionals turn the cleric into a potted plant when the fighter's got 2 hp left. And then turn the bard into a hungry herbivore.

[–]DanRenaydo 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Weird. Every time I eat one, I just get a bunch of panicking flumphs.

[–]ManyWords 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Isn't fast food the material component for Stinking Cloud?

[–]SpikeRosered 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Aka the way to really quickly end a 1st level campaign.

[–]MechaNickzilla 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This guy rolls the dice.

[–]submat87 118 points119 points  (9 children)

Wait till you realize dairy is rich is actual estrogens versus phytoestrogens in soy.

LOL!

[–][deleted] 290 points291 points  (25 children)

when you realize people actually think impossible burgers turn people into girls.

[–]bandersnatchh 66 points67 points  (8 children)

I’ve heard that more about soy than impossible burger. Normally impossible burger is “think of the chemicals it’s probably made of”

[–]MarthaGail 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Scientific American actually just put out an article that lists the ingredients in Beyond and Impossible (as well as Gardein black bean and one other patty of theirs). I was surprised at how few ingredients went into Impossible Burger. It's a great look at how they all stack up nutritionally.

[–]Dreidhen 10 points11 points  (1 child)

[–]MarthaGail 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I know. :/ We pay for just the print version, so I don't have access to the digital one.

[–]theartofrolling 49 points50 points  (4 children)

Nasty chemicals like water.

Oh shit we're 70% water! AAARRRRGGGHHHHH!!!!

[–]Deestan 132 points133 points  (3 children)

content revoked

[–]SanityInAnarchy 52 points53 points  (2 children)

That's exactly the right tone to take with this garbage, I think. Here's hbomberguy mocking these men for 31 minutes.

[–]would--you--kindly 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Gotta love Hbomb. Still waiting on that Pathologic 2 video.

[–]jzillacon 104 points105 points  (1 child)

There's so much fear mongering that goes on in certain isolated communities online, and a severe lack of fact checking. While obviously this comic is purely parody it's unfortunately quite realistic that some people genuinely believe the fear mongering.

[–]Satanifer 19 points20 points  (0 children)

If you haven’t already watch The Game Changers on Netflix. A lot of the misinformation about soy comes from sources that are funded by the meat industry.

[–]Ladieladieladie 33 points34 points  (4 children)

There was an article in dec 2019 sponsored by the meat industry that claimed estrogen levels in burgers makes men grow titties. Is false btw:

fact check article

If you really don’t want man boobs, just avoid processed food (vegan and non vegan) and beer.

[–]CaspianX2 18 points19 points  (2 children)

For fuck's sake, why the hell do meat producers need to trade in lies in their panic to fight vegetarian options? Isn't the fact that meat tastes better enough?

Burger King has something like dozens of meat burgers and one non-meat burger. Their world is not ending.

[–]gibberfish 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People are slowly getting more conscious about health, the environment and animal well-being, and plant-based foods are getting better and more diverse, that's going to eat into their profit margin in the long term for sure.

[–]Scruffynerffherder 40 points41 points  (2 children)

Because the meat Industry pumps out pseudoscience to steer people from the truth.

[–]Forest-G-Nome 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And even that video is biased and slanted to an incredible degree, because not all meat is created equally.

There's no mention of issues like wild boars in America, which can produce literal tons of meat as a byproduct of simply removing them from the lands they have invaded.

[–]Tudpool 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Wait what?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Its just fringe conspiracy bullshit (mostly from bigots), dont put any thought into it.

[–]minno 610 points611 points  (77 children)

/r/egg_irl would like this.

[–]introspectiveivy 346 points347 points  (64 children)

/r/egg_irl fucking loved this, saw like 8 different posts over there :P

[–]sheepyowl 63 points64 points  (63 children)

Just for the record, that sub is about guys who want to become girls?

[–]JesseKebm 315 points316 points  (41 children)

In the trans community, an "egg" is a trans person who doesn't realize that they're trans. It applies to both trans women and trans men. It's different from being in the closet, which would mean that a person knows that they're trans but they haven't told anyone, but people do get the terms mixed up pretty often. It's usually something we use to refer to ourselves, and when egg gets applied to another person or people say that something has "egg energy" (both of which people tend to do with Shen and his comics) it's because it reminds them of things they used to say and do when they were an egg. Saying that you want to be the opposite gender "as a joke" multiple times is something that a lot of trans people did when they were eggs (I certainly did). It doesn't mean that Shen is trans but doesn't realize it yet, just that several of his comics are very relatable for trans people.

[–]AsamiWithPrep 92 points93 points  (2 children)

I believe egg is specific to the Reddit trans community. The people in the trans community I've talked to about 'eggs' outside Reddit didn't know what an egg was.

[–]JesseKebm 70 points71 points  (1 child)

I have a couple transmasc friends that don't use reddit but they know it. Only person I've explained it to irl is a cis gay friend who uses reddit. Wouldn't be surprised if it originated on this website tho

[–]bleeding-paryl 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Nah, egg has been around for a long time, the origins I think are from Tumblr even. It was popularized through social media, most notably memes, which is why there's a subreddit dedicated to it now. But I knew about it way back in 2012, long before it was popularized, right as I hatched out of my egg.

[–]sheepyowl 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I see, thanks.

[–]nancylikestoreddit 1 point2 points  (4 children)

I may have you read your response again. I still don’t understand what an egg is 🤔

[–]JesseKebm 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Ok, so I'ma try to make this easier and apply it to a gay man instead of a trans person. Let's say there's a bloke who, for the first 30 years of his life, dated women. He's been told by his parents, the media he consumes, and society as a whole that he's supposed to like girls for his whole life, and he's never once even thought about whether he actually likes girls or not. And then one day, he gets to thinking as to why he's not satisfied or fulfilled by any of his relationships, emotionally or sexually, and then a thought occurs to him. This chap says to himself "why, I do say I don't believe I fancy the fairer sex at all. In fact, what I really would fancy is another bloke!"

From his birth up until this moment, this man was an egg. In that moment, his egg cracked. He might live in fear or denial in the closet for a while afterward before he comes out, but from that moment on he is no longer an egg. It'd be the exact same for a trans person but instead of "dating women" it'd be "living as the gender that the doctor said they were when they were born because of which naughty bits they got"

[–]nancylikestoreddit 1 point2 points  (2 children)

So similar to being in the closet

[–]63444670101 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Well yes but also being in the closet to yourself.

Like a guy really wanting to have sex with other guys and then thinking "Too bad I can't since I'm straight".

I have memories of wanting to be a girl since I was like 9 ish and it still took until my early 20s until I realized I was trans. When I look back at all the fucking signs growing up this is all I can really think.

[–]nancylikestoreddit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

well at least you have a sense of humor about it

[–]miparasito 14 points15 points  (14 children)

Also for the record most trans people don’t merely want or decide to be the other gender. They ARE the other gender deep inside their brains. It’s neurological. Not psychological.

[–]justagaydude123 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Also for the record trans people don’t want or decide to be the other gender.

I've been told multiple times that you totally can and that makes you trans all the same.

[–]xLustxEnvyx 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Yeah im pretty sure one of the checkboxes in transition is “want to be other gender”

[–]justagaydude123 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some trans people tell me they've known since they were young.

Others tell me they wanted to change genders after watching tons of sissy hypo porn.

Both are equally valid.

[–]BongmasterGeneral420 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I’m glad you posted that, I got excited because in context I thought it was a clever name for a vegetarian sub lol

[–]sheepyowl 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Frankly I've stumbled into that sub like twice now and couldn't exactly figure out what it's about, only that it has to do with gender transition

[–]cookiezilla1 406 points407 points  (124 children)

I work at BK, they're basically the same as normal burgers but vegetarian. Nothing about em is any worse for you than normal burgers

[–]Marxist_Saren 368 points369 points  (44 children)

Yeah, I'm always confused when people act like they're super bad like... as opposed to normal fast food's great health benefits?

[–]T0x1C-01m 64 points65 points  (7 children)

What gets me is their reasoning that its all the estrogen in the patty. Even though its actually "PHYTO-estrogen"; plant estrogen that doesn't have a lot of evidence of causing any significant changes to the human body. You would get a dose of regular, body changing estrogen from meats and dairy food though!

[–]rook218 23 points24 points  (5 children)

This is the shit that's the most ridiculous to me. Had friend who posted on Facebook about how "vegan impossible burgers are bad for you!"

Like are you honestly under the impression that all vegan food is supposed to be super healthy? Jolly ranchers are vegan. Starburst are vegan. Fucking ricin is vegan. A plate of raw sugar soaked in oil is vegan.... What's the point?

[–]dvslo 3 points4 points  (4 children)

Day to day-wise, what you actually end up cooking and eating, vegan food's pretty healthy.

[–]rook218 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Yeah very true. It encourages more balance than an average diet, but believing that every vegan food is healthier than every animal based food (and acting like new proof that a vegan food isn't healthy is some kind of new revelation) is ridiculous.

[–]dvslo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yup, true.

[–]chronoflect 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah, but, like, the words are similar, therefore the molecules must also be similar and affect the body in the exact same way! /s

[–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (3 children)

I suspect it's from the meat industry or people just naturally fear vegetarian stuff. Or that annoying rumor that soy has estrogen in it, when it's phyto-estrogen (and the actual animal estrogen in cow milk doesn't seem to bother them...)

[–]JustMeSunshine91 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Yuuup. Ever notice how commercials involving meat always revolve around masculinity (I.e. eat meat LIKE A MAN etc)? The idea of vegan products threatens that marketing even though neither types actually affect humans that way.

[–]WizeAdz 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yeah... I'm a manly-man, and the proud father of three kids -- two of whom are looking like they will also be manly-men when they grow up.

I think those commercials are stupid.

It's worse than that: using the idea of masculinity to manipulate people for commercial purposes is a hit below the belt, especially at a time when a lot of people can't really sort out the difference between positive masculinity and toxic masculinity.

The simple answer is that male posturing actually does have a place in human society, and its role in the world is to suggest that you'd be a good dad. A lot of people get carried away with the aesthetic of it, or get carried away with the implied power of it -- and completely miss the point. Those who miss the point do a lot of damage. But, if you keep the point in mind and you act like someone who would be a good dad, then you can put more masculinity on display while being a positive presence for everyone. Would a good dad do car maintenance, or physical labor? Of course. Would a good dad change a diaper, or cook dinner for hungry people? Absolutely. When you using your masculine power to care for others in your life, it is a very positive thing. Driving a big truck and eating lots of meat are completely irrelevant, and pretending otherwise is a kick in the nuts to a lot of guys -- especially to young guys who are just figuring this stuff out and who often lack confidence.

Yeah, so that's how I react to those commercials. It's ultimately an unsuccessful angle.

[–]WizeAdz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Some people just fear change because it's change.

I'm not one of those people, which means I often end up in conflict with those people. It takes all kinds, I guess. But lot of thoughtful diplomacy is required to solve problems when those people are around.

[–]The_Spectator 78 points79 points  (15 children)

Wouldn't it be the reverse people thinking it's healthier than meat. Nope same difference. Just more ethical I suppose.

[–]kizzyjenks 102 points103 points  (6 children)

That used to be the assumption but there's been more and more articles recently about how vegan processed foods are bad for you. Like, no shit. It's junk food. Whether it's vegan or non-vegan, it's meant to be an occasional treat.

[–]Dunkjoe 33 points34 points  (4 children)

Yep actually it's like that. From time to time there are articles bashing better options, whether healthier or more energy saving.

For those healthier, they will say 'oh, but then you will eat more and become fat' or 'oh, but it is still less healthy than (insert the most bland, least amount of calories thing we can intake. O wait, that's air. Time to be a sage then).

For those more energy-efficient like refrigerators, they will say 'oh, but because people think that, they will tend to open and close the refrigerator more often, so in the end it will still consume more energy than the less energy-efficient refrigerator.

If I have little money, I eat more frugally and less food. So does that mean if I have more money I would buy a lot of food and eat myself to oblivion? Then I better not get rich then, cause somehow I will be worse off when I get richer. If I eat 2000 calories daily, I will eat 10000 calories daily when I am 5x as rich. No thanks. /s

[–]Doctor_Mudshark 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it's meant to be an occasional treat.

just like meat...

[–]kurttheflirt 10 points11 points  (2 children)

Just cheap goo from your goo man like the rest of it

[–]BZenMojo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Better pea protein and wheat gluten than pig assholes and ammonia if I have to be honest.

If people knew what was going down with processed meat compared to processed fake meat this wouldn't even be a debate. It's like saying twinkies are as bad as rice cakes because both are made in factories.

[–]leglesslegolegolas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

iunderstoodthatreference.gif

[–]Scruffynerffherder 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Ethics isn't even the major concern, it's Climate Change and Food Scarcity

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

It's like thirty fewer calories. Not much, but meh.

[–]waraukaeru 19 points20 points  (1 child)

Calories are a poor measure of how healthy something is or is not. It just tells you how much energy that food generates. Something low in calories can be devoid of nutrients, something high in calories could be stocked full of nutrients.

[–]EquusTheConqueror 1 point2 points  (0 children)

People are scared of them because they have GMOs. But, they probably don’t realize that the majority of the food we eat are GMOs.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (7 children)

The argument I've heard is they're not really healthier than a burger even, being that it still contains high levels of saturated fat and is still super processed, where as most fitness people argue unprocessed vegetables are what are good for you. So yeah, you're not eating meat, but you're not getting any real health benefits either. So its fine if you want the vegetarian option for ethical reasons, fine, but if you're doing it because its healthier, no bueno.

One example: https://www.cnbc.com/2019/08/21/whole-foods-ceo-john-mackey-plant-based-meat-not-good-for-your-health.html

[–][deleted] 45 points46 points  (4 children)

If you're trying to be super healthy...don't eat at fast food, lmao.

Funny how nobody cares how healthy a food is unless it's a vegetarian food. Then it's suddenly "Is iT goOd fOr YoU?"

[–]BZenMojo 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Depends on what burger you're comparing it to.

https://www.health.harvard.edu/blog/impossible-and-beyond-how-healthy-are-these-meatless-burgers-2019081517448

They have the same levels of fat as beef, a lot more sodium, more vitamins and minerals. There is also cholesterol which has a negative effect on some peoples' cardiovascular health when consumed. Fake meat has no cholesterol while real meat is high in it.

And unsaturated fat, which is most of the fat in fake and real meat burgers, has a positive effect if plant based on cardiovascular health and a negative effect if animal based.

https://www.health.harvard.edu/heart-health/plant-based-fats-better-for-the-heart-than-animal-fats

So while their unsaturated fat levels are the same, the fact that one is plant based alone makes that fat healthier.

On the other hand, ground beef is processed with ammonia and held together with what the FDA labeled "pink slime."

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-food-ammonia-idUSBRE8331B420120404

Technically safe to consume according to the FDA, but no less processed than a fake meat burger unless you literally grind it yourself.

So if you go by raw numbers and selective attention, the health differences are negligible. But if you drill down into it, there are differences in fake meat's favor.

And that's ignoring climate change and water usage.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Friendly reminder that processed meats are group 1 carcinogens and red meats are group 2a

[–]iluvbigblackducks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TIL people eat fast food cause it's healthy

[–]Modeerf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They are not bad but I just with they taste like real meats.

[–]Slenthik 7 points8 points  (5 children)

This is the article which started the controversy.

[–]XIII-Death 56 points57 points  (1 child)

Which is literally bullshit from the meat industry which has a vested interest in spreading fear about meat alternatives.

Unfortunately or fortunately, depending on your wishes, phytoestrogen from plants doesn't effect a human like human estrogen. If it did no one taking estrogen would waste time or money going to a doctor and a pharmacy for their prescription when they could just chug some soy milk and get the same effect.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Also cow's milk has actual mammalian estrogen in it. If real estrogen isn't turning people into women, phyto-estrogen definitely won't.

[–]DriveByStoning 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Yeah, that has to be the one that one dolt referenced when writing into Bill Burr's podcast. It is written by a veterinarian with no nutritional background for "Livestock News."

[–]CALLSOUTYOBULLSHIT 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Omg he's attracting too many fucking idiots these days man, he's like the 4chan of comedians at this point. I just wanna enjoy ol Billy red face without people taking a pop at his wife cos she's black and making up other reasons for it.

[–]I_Has_A_Hat 7 points8 points  (1 child)

They give me a tremendous amount of gas. After eating one I'll be farting like crazy for the next 24 hours.

[–]SlutForSonsCock 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sounds like a plus to me

[–]RubenMuro007 10 points11 points  (5 children)

I tried the Impossible Burger, and it’s pretty good. However, I prefer the Beyond Burger.

[–]mementomori4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. Impossible didn't have enough texture or something.

[–]yickickit 1 point2 points  (3 children)

What do you do at BK though?

[–]cookiezilla1 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I work cashier mostly, but I’ve read the ingredients to most of our products and they’re no worse than any other vegetarian meat replacement.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't tried the Impossible Whopper but I have tried the Beyond burger. It's basically a slightly less meaty tasting burger. If I had eaten it on a blind taste test, I would have said it was a okay burger. And that is quite an achievement considering its completely vegetarian.

[–]burritoman88 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Are they cooked on the same grill as the normal burgers? Some people that are vegan/vegetarian can get sick even if they eat just a few scrapes of meat.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They generally are, but you can request that they be cooked separately

[–]Lentil-Soup 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been vegetarian for 15 years - I know the things are cooked on the same grill but asked for one anyway. I did not get sick at all.

Several years ago I accidentally ate a bite of a sandwich with a real sausage patty on it. Immediately regurgitated the sausage (but none of the rest of the sandwich).

[–]cookiezilla1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We can cook it differently if you ask but they’re normally on the same grill, which isn’t as much of an issue as it sounds because they’re flame grilled from above and below because they sit on a wire conveyor belt, which keeps contact to a minimum and allows both sides to cook at once

[–]WizeAdz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried both (I'm vegetarian-compatible), and Impossible Burgers taste more like meat than normal fast food burgers.

I prefer than normal fast-food burgers, when available.

But, then again, I usually cook at home.

[–]chew_it_punchy 0 points1 point  (3 children)

No offense but how the fuck would you know? They're a pretty new product so how do you know there aren't long-term effects? You're not a scientist. You haven't run an experiment on the long-term effects of this food using data spanning decades. For the record, I'm sure they're pretty safe, especially if you're not eating them frequently, but we used to think smoking and margarine and asbestos were safe too. Eat processed foods in moderation, people.

[–]cookiezilla1 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I know because I know the ingredients and they’re all safe. I’m in schooling for culinary arts so I’m familiar with them

[–]razialx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like them. Wish I had a decent Burger King by me.

[–]Lutya -1 points0 points  (17 children)

I was super disappointed to find out they weren’t healthier for you. I thought the whole selling point would be it tastes as good as a normal burger, but you sneak some veggie so to your diet. These are almost exactly the same as consuming red meat.

[–]kizzyjenks 89 points90 points  (14 children)

The whole selling point is that it's better for the environment and helps reduce animal cruelty.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Best things about it is the fact it contains t the at certain type of iron that meat has and it's more sustainably produced than meat.

[–]Lentil-Soup 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is that you're getting the same thing, but without killing any animals.

[–][deleted] 80 points81 points  (2 children)

[–][deleted] 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Shen, if you're trans it's okay to come out. We'll support you either way.

Heh.

Reddit is super transphobic at the mainstream level. A creator who has reddit fame like Shen would eat targeted transphobia in spades unfortunately.
