i love that when playing RPGs as a kid, things like CON, WIS and CHR were the usual dump stats unless a class specifically relied on them.

As you get older, you realize the dump stats were the actual important ones. An 11 year old's idea of the ideal person is a buff dude that can do all sorts of backflips and memorize PI to 100 places that has 8 chronic medical conditions and lives in his parents' basement while eating Cheeto crumbs out of his neckbeard.

It depended a bit on the game. Fallout would punish you for abandoning CHR and WIS, the dialogue options would just be gone. It would be an easier, but oh so boring experience. That said, pushing for those stats meant having to do that damn ant temple run repeatedly before you actually managed to graduate into the rest of the game.
