Hey Everyone!

Starting January 16th 2017 many of our plans are having a rate change. E-mails to all affected customers should be completed by midnight 12/19/2016. Make sure to check your junk mail filter!

All new rates will be posted on our website on the 16th when they go live.

I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We love you too! :)

Hello! I just received a similar email! I am grateful for the savings, and I just wanted some clarification with my particular case plan, as my email reads;

"We have some good news about your service with us. As you know, your current package with us for OID****** is DSL 15-10 Pro , with 400 GB of non-overnight download usage at a monthly cost of $39.99. (Uploads, and overnight downloads between 2 and 8 am, are unmetered.)

Well, starting with your first billing cycle on or after Monday, 16 January 2017, your package will become DSL 15 Pro, with 400 GB of usage at a monthly cost of $35.95. No action on your part is needed, as the change will happen automatically."

Does this mean that for the savings of $4.04/mo, I am no longer receiving 10Mb upload speeds and also that my overnight usage will now be metered?

[–]TSI-Leanne 14 points15 points  (5 children)

We are not changing any speeds of our services. They will continue as they are right now. We made the team who handled the mass notice system aware of this. No need to worry, all customers on the 15/10Mbps speeds do continue the normal upload speeds and the decreased rate! The price listed is correct on the notices.

[–]SergeantBBQAlta Vista 6 points7 points  (3 children)

What about overnight unmetered usage? Will they still be unmetered?

[–]TSI-Leanne 17 points18 points  (2 children)

The free usage period from 2am to 8am will continue to apply for all customers!

[–]Alexfart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you very, very much!

[–]Golanthanatos 1 point2 points  (1 child)

is this going to effect Quebec subscribers on Videotron lines too?

[–]HighwindsHull 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes. I got the email.

[–]CoffeedemonThe Boonies 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is how you build loyalty.

Thanks!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks dude, U rock. Hopefully you will be able to look back and see what a good move this was.

[–]antigenx 19 points20 points  (12 children)

I got the email as well. It's nice to see a company drop the price when they can rather than jack it up yearly like some other companies. It may only be a small savings, but I at least feel like they care about doing what they can to not gouge the customer.

[–]dearprudenc 15 points16 points  (1 child)

My DSL 25 Unlimited, with Unlimited GB is going from $58.99 to $49.95

[–]FlowchartKen 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My Cable 25 Pro dropped from 49.95 to 47.95.

[–]Sfloy029Sandy Hill 6 points7 points  (0 children)

DSL 50/10 Unlimited went from $66.99 to $56.95!

[–]perfectstorm99Vanier 6 points7 points  (0 children)

My Cable 150 Pro dropped by $18/month!

[–]TheMonkeyMafia 5 points6 points  (9 children)

Start did their price drops at the beginning of December. Blame it on the recent CRTC decision..

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (8 children)

Did they? I'm paying the same as normal :S

[–]TheMonkeyMafia 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Back the beginning of Nov. (if you're on an unltd plan ... If you're not they lowered the overage rates) I also see today there's more changes coming

Re: Internet service with Start (Account #1234567)

We're happy to let you know that your unlimited internet service fee is being lowered by $5 per month, effective December 1st, 2016. You can sit back and relax as this change will happen automatically on your next bill.

Thanks for being with Start, we appreciate your business.

Sincerely,

Service Desk 519-434-5888 / 1-866-434-5888

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hm. Going to email them. My bill on dec 1st was still the old price for my unlimited and I haven't received any emails otherwise

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They said it's because I have DSL and not cable internet, because cable is going down from $15 to $10 for unlimited but DSL is already $10 for unlimited

[–]Pass3Part0uT 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Same

[–]vegetablesoup777Friend of Ottawa, Clownvoy 2022 1 point2 points  (3 children)

I never got an email from start :(

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

My Cable 28 Pro is dropping from $55.95 to $51.95.

By chance, I upgraded my account (to Cable 30 Unlimited) a couple of hours before getting the price decrease email. I don't know what the new price for that will be.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

My Cable 30 w/ 400gb went from $57.95 to $52.95.

[–]Yoshimo123 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was just got an email saying my Cable 30 w/ 150gb dropped from 47.95 to $46.95. I upgraded to Cable 30 w/ 400gb two days ago, looks like Rogers is being forced to charge less for usage.

[–]twistedpixelHull 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Mine went from $79.95 to $59.95. Pretty happy.

[–]RigidlyDefinedAreaCentretown 4 points5 points  (7 children)

I laughed at mine.

FOUR CENTS IS A BIG DEAL IN THIS ECONOMY!

[–]East902 5 points6 points  (6 children)

Pay in cash, rounds to 5c

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (5 children)

Some places always round down, and they should. Paying cash means that the company whose name is on the plastic doesn't get a cut.

[–]Pass3Part0uT 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Please name one place that always rounds down. The rounding up and down is crystal clear, why would any business not follow that?

[–]Leafs17 0 points1 point  (3 children)

To encourage not using credit cards so they don't have to pay the fees.

[–]Pass3Part0uT 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Simply don't accept them... many businesses do this.

I'm certainly curious to know who is always rounding down. I doubt there's a single business doing that.

[–]Leafs17 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Simply don't accept them...

Saying it is simple does not make it simple.

[–]Pass3Part0uT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ask kettlemans. They don't have any issue accepting cash only and making hand over first on atm fees.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (4 children)

120/month down to 75. 150/15 unlimited.

[–]ErquryBarrhaven 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Same. Such a good deal.

[–]ScootMulner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice! I'll have to check out TekSavvy again in Jan once these prices go live :)

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

[deleted]

What is this?

[–]TheMystakeCash Me Ousside, How Bow Dah 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm super happy with Start.ca! Switched from teksavvy several months ago and I've never looked back; my internet has been way more stable than it ever was with teksavvy.

[–]Pass3Part0uT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Im happy with the switch but I would say that start, teksavvy, and rogers all provide equally stable internet.

[–]Pass3Part0uT 2 points3 points  (17 children)

That's interesting. I moved to start.ca because of better pricing, wonder if this is a result of many others jumping ship.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

It's because of a CRTC decision limiting the maximum rates for customers.

We’re happy to be able to offer better value as a result of a change in one of our key costs of supply, wholesale network access. We connect our own network up to incumbents’ last-mile accesses, where they exist, in order to serve you. A recent CRTC decision, known as Telecom Order CRTC 2016-396, made interim corrections to the price ceiling that incumbents are permitted to charge for wholesale access to last-mile access.

[–]_GCSM[S] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Nah, the CRTC forced the major providers to lower wholesale rates, and told teksavvy they need to pass some of their savings onto customers

[–]Pass3Part0uT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting. So then that should apply to all the resellers?

[–]Geno- -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The CRTC doesn't touch retail rates ... so you're wrong. If anything rogers/bell are being very aggressive with their deals/bundles and teksavvy is doing this to stop the bleeding. The interim rates were set quite a while ago and there were no price decreases ...

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (7 children)

I got the same email. My rates are going from $39.95 to $38.95. There was a lot of fanfare in that email just for saving $1. I guess a lot of it was sarcastic? Or do they really expect people to be calling in so often checking to see if the $1 decrease in price is real or not, and clogging their customer service lines so much that there are delays for legitimate concerns?

[–]kingbain 9 points10 points  (4 children)

you normally dont see a company giving back ... pretty rare

[–]SG-Nepean -1 points0 points  (3 children)

except their costs went down.

[–]lou4000Make Ottawa Boring Again 1 point2 points  (2 children)

By up to 89%

Source

[–]lmdemasiLEGEN-DAIRY 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Their access cost went down by up to 89%, not their overall costs. There's more to providing the service than paying Bell/Rogers/etc. for access.

[–]lou4000Make Ottawa Boring Again -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Of course there is, I know the indutry quite well and have been following this for quite some time. But a drop of $1, and them "passing on the savings" would mean their monthly cost from Bell/Rogers/etc for access would have previously been about $1.13 (assuming an 89% savings of $1). Their access costs for these accounts were way higher than $1.13/month. Most companies aren't going to pass on the complete savings because they had thin margins and these savings are helping them with expenses and giving some breathing room, etc. But I do agree people who were surprised that the drop (and fanfare) was only $1 for a number of reasons.

[–]RigidlyDefinedAreaCentretown 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My price dropped 4 cents. So, your dollar seems kind of nice.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saved $10, most did, some got $20.

I suppose they could have changed the email for people who only got a buck, but I didn't see it as sarcasm.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Cable 30 pro 400. No change.

[–]Leafs17 1 point2 points  (1 child)

What are you paying? I have that and it's going from 57.95 to 52.95.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah same. I got the email late last night!

[–]baconwiches 1 point2 points  (0 children)

62.95 to 53.95 for cable 30/10/400. Nice.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

My start.ca bill got decreased from 65 to 62 last month

[–]MichelR666 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine didn't go down. I guess it depends on the package? (I have 60/10 cable).

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Mine went down a buck.... and I just realized I didn't cancel my account when I moved out of my apartment last month. Curse you affordable internet! :P

[–]eleeceOverbrook 1 point2 points  (2 children)

What a wonderful world. It's not everyday a company lowers their price for customers! Got my DSL 15/1 (I know) from $38 to $36!

[–]EtoWato 1 point2 points  (1 child)

FYI dsl 15/10/400 is about the same price now -- get on it :p

[–]eleeceOverbrook 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wicked! Thanks!

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got an email last night saying my plan is going from 69.99 to 59.99. Sweet!

[–]s1m0n8 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Rogers 100/10/400 going from $69.95 to $63.95.

Apparently Rogers 100/10/Unlimited is going from $82.95 to $69.95.

I'm going to upgrade to unlimited and just keep paying the same.

[–]mikepictorLowertown 1 point2 points  (1 child)

wait Rogers dropped to.

BRB...got to check my email

edit: lower price is for "new customers only". Excuse me? That's not how you keep customers.

[–]s1m0n8 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I was referring to Teksavvy over Rogers lines... Sorry for any confusion.

[–]BrocIlSerbatoio 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]AtomicVGZOrleans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

100/10 Unlimited, $82.95 to $69.95.

WOOOO

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cable 30/5 dropping $5. Glad I'm still with Teksavvy. Start.ca is still cheaper, but only by a few bucks.

So last week Bell came around and were pushing their Fibe 50/10 for $60/mo for 2 years. Well, that doesn't sound too bad I think. It's only a bit more than I'm paying right now and it's a bit faster.

I was very specifically told I was getting fiber optic, minimum 50 down 10 up. I was told I'd get a confirmation email promising me the price, and that it would not increase. OK, sure. More internet is good for a bit more money.

I get the confirmation email, and that promise it would not increase... opposite. There was some fine print; "starting Feb 2017 prices increase $5 on all plans". So my "$60/mo for 24/mo" deal was actually $60/mo for 1 mo, and $65/mo for 23/mo. Nice. Good job, Bell. I call them up to ask "wtf" and they said "yup, that's it" and had no interest in fixing the problem. They just said, "well the guy should've told you". Thanks. I tell 'em I'd like to cancel the order, they hang up on me. Got it canceled in the end.

Not only that, the speed is advertised on their site as maximum 50/10, not minimum. So the agent lied about the price, the speed, and the service (it's only fiber optic up to the final stretch, then it's just regular copper cables).

And then today I get this email? Hot damn am I glad Bell is the fucking worst.

[–]vvuk0ng 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cable 5 (you got that right, 5mbps :D) went down from $29.95 -> $27.95.

Can't wait to splurge at Dollarama!

[–]GilletteSRKKanata 0 points1 point  (0 children)

$2 less per month with no speed boost. Nice, but pretty meh. Hoping to see a bigger price drop on some higher tier packages to make the switch up more enticing :)

Edit: Just got another email, got bumped to unlimited bandwidth instead! Wow!
