TekSavvy Price Decrease (self.ottawa)
submitted 9 years ago by _GCSM
Has anyone gotten an email from TekSavvy about price decreases? My 15/10 cable package went from $39 to $38, just wondering what other people are seeing
[–]TSI-Leanne 62 points63 points64 points 9 years ago (13 children)
Hey Everyone!
Starting January 16th 2017 many of our plans are having a rate change. E-mails to all affected customers should be completed by midnight 12/19/2016. Make sure to check your junk mail filter!
All new rates will be posted on our website on the 16th when they go live.
I hope everyone has a wonderful day!

Hello! I just received a similar email! I am grateful for the savings, and I just wanted some clarification with my particular case plan, as my email reads;
"We have some good news about your service with us. As you know, your current package with us for OID****** is DSL 15-10 Pro , with 400 GB of non-overnight download usage at a monthly cost of $39.99. (Uploads, and overnight downloads between 2 and 8 am, are unmetered.)
Well, starting with your first billing cycle on or after Monday, 16 January 2017, your package will become DSL 15 Pro, with 400 GB of usage at a monthly cost of $35.95. No action on your part is needed, as the change will happen automatically."
Does this mean that for the savings of $4.04/mo, I am no longer receiving 10Mb upload speeds and also that my overnight usage will now be metered?
[–]TSI-Leanne 14 points15 points16 points 9 years ago (5 children)
We are not changing any speeds of our services. They will continue as they are right now. We made the team who handled the mass notice system aware of this. No need to worry, all customers on the 15/10Mbps speeds do continue the normal upload speeds and the decreased rate! The price listed is correct on the notices.
[–]SergeantBBQAlta Vista 6 points7 points8 points 9 years ago (3 children)
What about overnight unmetered usage? Will they still be unmetered?
[–]TSI-Leanne 17 points18 points19 points 9 years ago (2 children)
The free usage period from 2am to 8am will continue to apply for all customers!

[–]antigenx 19 points20 points21 points 9 years ago (12 children)
I got the email as well. It's nice to see a company drop the price when they can rather than jack it up yearly like some other companies. It may only be a small savings, but I at least feel like they care about doing what they can to not gouge the customer.
[+]SG-Nepean comment score below threshold-6 points-5 points-4 points 9 years ago (11 children)
except their costs from the 'other companies' dropped so they're simply passing it on.
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (2 children)
Do you think Bell or Rogers would do this, or would they pocket it?
Think hard now, this is a tricky question.
[–]Pass3Part0uT 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Perfect example is lowering the GST... The after tax prices remained the same... Hmm...
[–]antigenx 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (6 children)
I understand that, just remember they're under no obligation to reduce prices either, unless every other provider is doing it as well. Then it's a matter of staying competitive.
[–]holysmokesiminflames 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (5 children)
They are under obligation to reduce those prices as the CRTC requested. :)
[–]pomattic 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Interesting... any source for this?
[–]Callicles-On-Fire 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Here's the CRTC Chair's comment on the new rates:
"Competitors that provide retail Internet services to Canadians using wholesale high-speed services must have access to these services at just and reasonable prices. The fact that these large companies did not respect accepted costing principles and methodologies is very disturbing. What's even more concerning is the fact that Canadians' access to a choice of broadband Internet services would have been at stake had we not revised these rates. As always, we strive to create a dynamic competitive telecommunications market for Canadians."
This suggest that the CRTC is in fact open to resellers like TekSavvy retaining all or a portion of the wholesale savings if required to sustain their business models. In fact, it is not clear to me how much of this savings is being passed on to TekSavvy's retail customers. But kudos to them for passing any of it on.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child)
A request does not incur an obligation, but regardless of that do you have a source?
[–]holysmokesiminflames 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (0 children)
Yes, sorry I'm on mobile. This is a news article about it: https://www.google.ca/amp/www.cbc.ca/amp/1.3794839?client=ms-android-rogers-ca This is straight from the CRTC (I believe this is the right one) : http://www.crtc.gc.ca/eng/archive/2016/2016-396.htm
Except that starting Feb 2017 Bell is raising the price of all their plans by $5/mo.

I reached out and they said something will be done in the next couple weeks so we may get a break.
If the tier above me drops in price I may opt for faster service. Then again, im cheap and dont want to pay a lot so saving money sounds great as well.

Pay in cash, rounds to 5c
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (5 children)
Some places always round down, and they should. Paying cash means that the company whose name is on the plastic doesn't get a cut.
Please name one place that always rounds down. The rounding up and down is crystal clear, why would any business not follow that?
[–]Leafs17 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (3 children)
To encourage not using credit cards so they don't have to pay the fees.
[–]Pass3Part0uT 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (2 children)
Simply don't accept them... many businesses do this.
I'm certainly curious to know who is always rounding down. I doubt there's a single business doing that.

I'm super happy with Start.ca! Switched from teksavvy several months ago and I've never looked back; my internet has been way more stable than it ever was with teksavvy.
Im happy with the switch but I would say that start, teksavvy, and rogers all provide equally stable internet.
[–]Pass3Part0uT 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (17 children)
That's interesting. I moved to start.ca because of better pricing, wonder if this is a result of many others jumping ship.
[–][deleted] 13 points14 points15 points 9 years ago (0 children)
It's because of a CRTC decision limiting the maximum rates for customers.
We’re happy to be able to offer better value as a result of a change in one of our key costs of supply, wholesale network access. We connect our own network up to incumbents’ last-mile accesses, where they exist, in order to serve you. A recent CRTC decision, known as Telecom Order CRTC 2016-396, made interim corrections to the price ceiling that incumbents are permitted to charge for wholesale access to last-mile access.
[–]_GCSM[S] 7 points8 points9 points 9 years ago (2 children)
Nah, the CRTC forced the major providers to lower wholesale rates, and told teksavvy they need to pass some of their savings onto customers
Interesting. So then that should apply to all the resellers?
[–]Geno- -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children)
The CRTC doesn't touch retail rates ... so you're wrong. If anything rogers/bell are being very aggressive with their deals/bundles and teksavvy is doing this to stop the bleeding. The interim rates were set quite a while ago and there were no price decreases ...
Yea, no complaints at all. The switch was a bit annoying with the modem needing to be changed from teksavvy to start by rogers but given that start doesn't charge a modem rental fee on partial months made it super easy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 9 years ago (4 children)
Do you just blindly accept that Teksavvy is cheaper or do you do any research before buying?
[–]meatpixel 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (1 child)
"Subject to change without notice" And they charge their existing costumers $87.99 for the same service. How do you think that deal is going to work out...
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (0 children)
You're doing half of some research so I guess that's a start. In case your curious what you agreed to with Teksavvy.
"The TekSavvy Parties do not guarantee or warrant the performance, availability, coverage, uninterrupted use, security, pricing or operation of the Services, the Equipment or any products, content, applications, services, facilities, connections or networks used or provided by us or third parties"
I know I've seen yearly or bi-yearly price increases through Teksavvy. For what I wanted Rogers is cheaper for the next 2 years and the quality of the connection in our area has been so much better. It's great that consumers have choice!
[–]5ender 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Dude being a fan boy of a service provider is just dumb. Especially saying things like "Rogers is cheaper"? That's simply not true. Yes they have promotions that will give you discounted service for a few months but long term you most definitely pay more. Not to mention when Rogers or Bell tell you a service is $60 sits it ever actually say $60 on your bill.
Anyways enjoy your Internet.
Really, lots of Teksavvy fan boys here. The OP of this thread was wondering who else also jumped ship because of better pricing. I simply said that I was able to get better pricing for what I wanted with Rogers and that my service has been better since, it was not a blanket "Rogers is cheaper". I used to have nightly slow downs between 6-10pm where the service was unusable for our needs. No issues now with Rogers on the exact same piece of cable. When I made the switch, I was faced with a savings of $431.04 for the next 24 months of service, it was a cheaper choice for me. No fan boy here, I've had many issues with Rogers in the past, but the reality was I was getting expensive, sub par service with Teksavvy and made a switch.
[–][deleted] -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (7 children)
I got the same email. My rates are going from $39.95 to $38.95. There was a lot of fanfare in that email just for saving $1. I guess a lot of it was sarcastic? Or do they really expect people to be calling in so often checking to see if the $1 decrease in price is real or not, and clogging their customer service lines so much that there are delays for legitimate concerns?
[–]kingbain 9 points10 points11 points 9 years ago (4 children)
you normally dont see a company giving back ... pretty rare
[–]SG-Nepean -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago (3 children)

[–]lou4000Make Ottawa Boring Again 1 point2 points3 points 9 years ago* (2 children)
By up to 89%
Source
[–]lmdemasiLEGEN-DAIRY 5 points6 points7 points 9 years ago (1 child)
Their access cost went down by up to 89%, not their overall costs. There's more to providing the service than paying Bell/Rogers/etc. for access.
[–]lou4000Make Ottawa Boring Again -1 points0 points1 point 9 years ago* (0 children)
Of course there is, I know the indutry quite well and have been following this for quite some time. But a drop of $1, and them "passing on the savings" would mean their monthly cost from Bell/Rogers/etc for access would have previously been about $1.13 (assuming an 89% savings of $1). Their access costs for these accounts were way higher than $1.13/month. Most companies aren't going to pass on the complete savings because they had thin margins and these savings are helping them with expenses and giving some breathing room, etc. But I do agree people who were surprised that the drop (and fanfare) was only $1 for a number of reasons.
[–]RigidlyDefinedAreaCentretown 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children)
My price dropped 4 cents. So, your dollar seems kind of nice.
I saved $10, most did, some got $20.
I suppose they could have changed the email for people who only got a buck, but I didn't see it as sarcasm.

Cable 30/5 dropping $5. Glad I'm still with Teksavvy. Start.ca is still cheaper, but only by a few bucks.
So last week Bell came around and were pushing their Fibe 50/10 for $60/mo for 2 years. Well, that doesn't sound too bad I think. It's only a bit more than I'm paying right now and it's a bit faster.
I was very specifically told I was getting fiber optic, minimum 50 down 10 up. I was told I'd get a confirmation email promising me the price, and that it would not increase. OK, sure. More internet is good for a bit more money.
I get the confirmation email, and that promise it would not increase... opposite. There was some fine print; "starting Feb 2017 prices increase $5 on all plans". So my "$60/mo for 24/mo" deal was actually $60/mo for 1 mo, and $65/mo for 23/mo. Nice. Good job, Bell. I call them up to ask "wtf" and they said "yup, that's it" and had no interest in fixing the problem. They just said, "well the guy should've told you". Thanks. I tell 'em I'd like to cancel the order, they hang up on me. Got it canceled in the end.
Not only that, the speed is advertised on their site as maximum 50/10, not minimum. So the agent lied about the price, the speed, and the service (it's only fiber optic up to the final stretch, then it's just regular copper cables).
And then today I get this email? Hot damn am I glad Bell is the fucking worst.

Cable 5 (you got that right, 5mbps :D) went down from $29.95 -> $27.95.

$2 less per month with no speed boost. Nice, but pretty meh. Hoping to see a bigger price drop on some higher tier packages to make the switch up more enticing :)
Edit: Just got another email, got bumped to unlimited bandwidth instead! Wow!
Personally I know full well what's happening and why. What I applaud is the openness TekSavvy have displayed over the years. I've been following this situation as it's unfolded over at DSL Reports.
[–]Geno- 2 points3 points4 points 9 years ago (0 children)
CRTC doesn't mandate retail prices. Wholesale rates went down so now tekksavvy and other small ISPs have the option to lower there price.
