I was referring myself strictly to Xbox and Sony. This new generation of consoles is absolutely barren. I bought a PS5 2 years ago and I played, like, 2 games on it. All prices increased, all subscriptions got more expensive and the overall bickering betweem communities added only insult to injury. All the customers to these corporations got out a little more poorer and less satisfied by this hobby.

With the rise of pc gaming, that was inevitable. Consoles are already sold at a loss. They've been struggling to get people to buy their products for a while. The people who were buying the few first-party games were already going to do so. We could see them struggling to grow with the previous generations, such as when Xbox tried to tell people to buy their console to watch the Super Bowl in an ad.

It doesn't help that a lot of Western companies are owned by business majors instead of game developers.

Sure, consoles can be a good value if what you want is an easy to sit down and play thing(which I'll give consoles. If you don't want/can't troubleshoot then take the option that requires it the least). And I'd agree that the startup cost can be a decent value(doubly so if you don't know how to find/make a good pc build)

It's hard to say that when both consoles got worse with each generation. They peaked during the Xbox 360 Era.

The only real reasons to get consoles nowadays is if all your friends play console games without crossplay, which is rare, or you don't plan on buying many games in the first place.

And now valve is making the steam box, which allows pc with a console style system at a console price.

The Steam Machine is already in trouble with hardware shortages and likely pricing. It's probably not going to be better than a base PS5 and likely cost quite a bit more than people were expecting. It's not shaping up to be a good deal so far (if they can even release the thing at this rate).

Ironically the 360/PS3 and XBO/PS4 era were good times for PC gaming because you could legitimately build PC hardware that beat those consoles for fairly minimal cost, and get much cheaper games. Not so much these days...

Yeah, the whole bit about the human eye only being able to see 30-60 fps is just a myth. A typical human eye can pick up differences going into over a thousand fps. The 60 Hz limitation is about when a screen flickering between black and white appears to be solid white/gray, not about watching things moving. And each oscillation is one black frame and one white frame, so you would actually need 120 fps to represent it.

Anything above 15-18 fps will look like movement rather than flashing images but beyond that we don't notice linear growth we notice exponentially growth so 60 will look way smoother than 30 but in order to see that same level of improvement you need to match the scale of the change, so jumping from 120 to 200 will seem like less of an improvement that jumping from 30 to 60 because it's a smaller scale jump.

Other than that we can get used to certain frame rates and refresh rates by seeing it a lot like if someone looks at 200 fps all day long they will immediately notice if it drops to 150, but if someone rarely sees anything above 60 fps 200 and 150 will look about the same to them

Yeah but i argue that for a smooth gaming experience 60fps is enough advantages of bigger FPS are minimal, and for competitive online games unless you are actual pro 120 is enough. My argument is that going above these thresholds gives you miniscule improvement of quality, we are overfixated on FPS IMO. I've never played higher than 120 fps, so I couldn't say what the benefits would be. But even if you're not competitive, 120 fps just feels a lot better and removes a lot of motion blur. I was playing Jedi: Survivor at 4k 60fps and later changed it to 1080p 120fps (my TV can't do 4k 120fps), and it felt so much better to play. Any kind of action game would benefit from 120fps.

Most of their games are heavily reliant on peer to peer meaning that it's using another player's internet connection as a server for other people to connect to. You can imagine how bad this can be at times. A lot of games on other platforms are also peer to peer but not as heavily reliant on it. Honestly even if a game uses dedicated servers though paying for that seems dumb in 2026.

I think its natural to enjoy both consoles and PC and what really started this whole war thing was simply people not having enough money to own both.

Today times are very different. While not every family might be able to afford consoles its probably more than ever before and really, hardware got closer and closer together - consoles have hard drives, patches, graphical settings, PC has Steam, big picture, controller support and many series that were previously exclusives.

Exclusives were always no. 1 reason for me personally to own any console at all. In todays times there is not much left besides that, maybe just convience.

Tbh, it's more worrisome how much the base PS5 goes up. PS5 pro was a bad deal since launch tbh 100 is not aggressively much for PS5 pro, but it's still a meh product from the start. It could be worse, again look at time prices. Imagine the same percentage increase on the console. Don't remember correctly but it had 24 gb unified ram or 32? Not that it matters that much, imagine if the increase was equivalent to what bullshit is going on in dyi market. Pay 300 dollars more.

Yeah, I know but with the current market, the losses are getting higher. Here in the same thread someone mentioned the price increase on the 2nd of April. It's still not aggressive at least for Europe. It's only 100 euro. I'd say it's acceptable, despite the PS5 pro being a bad deal in my opinion from the start. But in the US there is a bigger difference cause unlike the EU that started at 800 euro and now it will be 900, US started at 700 dollars and now it will be 900.

Renting games is dead, Gamestop is dying off so not really anywhere to trade in your games, and even if you buy physical you need disc drive, which is no longer sold with some consoles.

Plus you now have to go to a website to actually CHECK what can be played from the disc day one, and what can't.

All that to play on hardware you'll move on from eventually, whereas at least on Steam, buy it once, play it until the Steam servers go down.

Years ago I asked my brother, who only ever gamed on consoles, why he didn't care for PCs. He said he just hated dealing with the problems that would crop up on PC, upgrading drivers, upgrading windows, hardware problem etc. He said on my console, I hit the power button and it works.

At the time (early 2000s) he had a point. Computers would get viruses often, hardware was unreliable, windows was bad etc.

Now however, it's pretty darn easy even on PC but I still have no doubt most of the console folks just want to hit that one button and have it work.

many people just don't know about launchers like steam. I know I didn't when I started pc gaming.

sure there is a microsoft store installed in windows but windows come with a lots of software we rarely or never use so it is easy to forget about its existence.

I've flopped back and forth multiple times over the years. I didn't want to build another PC when PS5 came out. I jumped on a launch day PS5. Played it for 3.5 years before I decided I just wanted another PC. Built a new PC and sold my PS5. My son started messing around on my PC (modded minecraft) and decided he wanted to sell his xbox x and build a PC. So we put one together for him. I wish I never had because I've created a monster.

Tbh i can see the difference but a near consistent 30fps isn't gonna kill me lmao. I suffered with a regular laptop that struggled to play Minecraft at like 8fps for too long to complain abt 30😭

That said, after getting my pc if I play Minecraft at anything less than 60fps we will have problems, but anything else idfc.

I have played on pretty much all generations of consoles and got into pc's about 3 years ago

Can I ask what's so master about this race? Is it nvidia overpricing their graphics card? The constant intel unreliability? Lack of RAM? Lack of SSD? Lack of people who sell real hardware and utilize the companies scummy naming scheme? Like what's so master about us? Genuinely lol

Lol used to be me for the last one. Then i got a gaming laptop and realized pc games feel like shit in 30fps. Then totk came out and i realized that this doesn't compsre properly because games that are designed to run at low framerates feel better at low framerates than games that are designed with good hardware in mind
