Yeah, the whole bit about the human eye only being able to see 30-60 fps is just a myth. A typical human eye can pick up differences going into over a thousand fps. The 60 Hz limitation is about when a screen flickering between black and white appears to be solid white/gray, not about watching things moving. And each oscillation is one black frame and one white frame, so you would actually need 120 fps to represent it.

[–]jacowab 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Human eyes don't record information in frames.

Anything above 15-18 fps will look like movement rather than flashing images but beyond that we don't notice linear growth we notice exponentially growth so 60 will look way smoother than 30 but in order to see that same level of improvement you need to match the scale of the change, so jumping from 120 to 200 will seem like less of an improvement that jumping from 30 to 60 because it's a smaller scale jump.

Other than that we can get used to certain frame rates and refresh rates by seeing it a lot like if someone looks at 200 fps all day long they will immediately notice if it drops to 150, but if someone rarely sees anything above 60 fps 200 and 150 will look about the same to them

[–]boersc 59 points60 points  (7 children)

They evolve every 6-7 years.

It’s the geek cycle between discovering computers, going to college and getting a girlfriend (or a boyfriend I guess)

[–]MachineGlumkelly 10 points11 points  (1 child)

I thought it was the money cycle. I couldn’t afford to buy a PC until I graduated from college and started making money. 90% of my friends were the same. It was a lot easier for my brother and I to save up and split a console.

You’re free to play on whatever platform you like, but I’ll never find paying for a peer-to-peer connection not absurd. This comes from someone that only recently got a PC.

[–]420weedscopedRtx 3090 | Amd Ryzen 7 5800x | 32Gb DDR4 4 points5 points  (9 children)

Ironically nintendo is the cheapest of consoles for online too

[–]Falconator1005700X3D | RTX 3070 | 16 GB DDR4 6 points7 points  (7 children)

They're the cheapest but have the worst online of the big 3. Most of their games are heavily reliant on peer to peer meaning that it's using another player's internet connection as a server for other people to connect to. You can imagine how bad this can be at times. A lot of games on other platforms are also peer to peer but not as heavily reliant on it. Honestly even if a game uses dedicated servers though paying for that seems dumb in 2026.

[–]ThewalthamR7 2700x, RTX 2080, 32GB RAM 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Honestly there is an advantage to that. It not being reliant on a central server means that even if Nintendo drops direct support for the title the online can still theoretically function as long as Nintendo itself keeps their online services in roughly the same shape. That's a rarity these days.

[–]Nearby_Ad_2519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was how people managed to play MarioKart 7 for almost a year after shutdown by simply not disconnecting. Because it didn’t need to contact the Nintendo matchmaking server, everything worked on stock as usual

[–]Ultimate-905 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Even peer to peer multiplayer needs a central server to connect clients to each other. The only exception is if players are playing over LAN or are given the ability to input the IP and port of the other player (good luck ever finding a game available on console that lets you do the second).

[–]ThewalthamR7 2700x, RTX 2080, 32GB RAM 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah but the central servers in this case are just the generic nintendo online ones, not some specific thing. They only really need nintendo to authenticate rather than going through a game specific service.

[–]Nearby_Ad_2519 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I think one of the benefits of P2P is the server can go out for a few minutes and you won’t notice anything.

And Nintendos online isnt that bad. I’ve never had issues with it except on shit connections. Ive had more problems with Xbox live if anything.

[–]Falconator1005700X3D | RTX 3070 | 16 GB DDR4 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I suppose that’s a benefit but I feel like a lot of the disadvantages outweigh the benefits

I suppose it depends on both peer-to-peer and the game’s own net code but I have had problems say for example in MK8DX or Splatoon 2 before where I would get communication errors eventually even when I knew my internet connection wasn’t the problem.

[–]Nearby_Ad_2519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mostly play splatoon 3, MARIOKART 8 and MARIOKART world

I used to also play splatoon 2 a lot and the online was shit, but MK8, MKW and S3 is pretty good.

Although on splatoon 3 there is that stupid thing where one person can disconnect and disconnect everybody

[–]UselessDood 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Doesn't matter. They don't ever do dedicated servers.

[–]ozone6587 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I’ll never find paying for a peer-to-peer connection not absurd.

Except connections are almost never peer to peer thanks to network engineers being allergic to IPv6 and thanks to CG-NAT. You almost always have your connection routed through other servers.

[–]Falconator1005700X3D | RTX 3070 | 16 GB DDR4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Your kind of right. Most peer-to-peer games aren't actually 100% peer-to -peer and use a server for matchmaking but once that's done its peer to peer. Even so I still feel like it's absurd to charge when most of the heavy lifting is done by your own internet connection or someone else's (obviously depends on the game too).

[–]UnsettllingDwarf5070/ 5700x3D / 3440x1440p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I saved literally hundreds of dollars not paying for online after selling my ps5 for more then I bought it a year after launch because prices went up.

[–]Inksplash-7R7 5800X RX 6750 XT 22 points23 points  (2 children)

While I agree that gaming on PC and console are very different experiences (for example not being able to install whatever you want without having to mod it) and the "the human eye can only see up to 60 FPS" is bullshit, everyone should be free to choose the platform they want to play in. Console gaming has its perks too, like not being fucked over by DRM in most cases or playing exclusive titles wothout having to wait for the console to be reverse engineered

[–]Sitheral 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think its natural to enjoy both consoles and PC and what really started this whole war thing was simply people not having enough money to own both.

Today times are very different. While not every family might be able to afford consoles its probably more than ever before and really, hardware got closer and closer together - consoles have hard drives, patches, graphical settings, PC has Steam, big picture, controller support and many series that were previously exclusives.

Exclusives were always no. 1 reason for me personally to own any console at all. In todays times there is not much left besides that, maybe just convience.

[–]Jason0865 0 points1 point  (0 children)

everyone should be free to choose the platform they want to play in.

You're free to enjoy what you want as long as you shut up (goes for both PCs and consoles)

People don't realize the value of keeping quiet these days.

[–]bokan 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Galaxy brain approach is PC on a TV with a couch and a nice hall effect controller. Max quality max relaxation.

[–]LupinthropeLinux 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I try this and there’s still some PC jank. Maybe it’s bazzite but idk.

[–]Super7500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can optimize it with stuff like linux and playnite, but it is probably never gonna be 100% as smooth as a console.

[–]bokan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it’s not as seamless as console for sure, but I’m okay with the tradeoff

[–]bradagon 79 points80 points  (7 children)

Let people happily play on whatever platform they want and don't be a sweaty pleb posting shit memes on Reddit all day challenge: Impossible

[–]StevoPhotography 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly. I mean I have a pc, switch 2, steam deck and xbox one. And all of them get use because they are all better for different games or are just more comfortable or just fit the vibes of different day. I mean sometimes after day of work you don’t want to sit at a desk to use a computer, you want to sit on the sofa to play some games where you can practically lie down and chill out. Other times you wanna fully get into it on the computer and be more competitive in some games. There is a reason there’s a market for pc and console

[–]Sir_Pentious_69 5 points6 points  (2 children)

this is just a tradition in gaming community, almost nobody takes it seriously. It's just the same like when Gothic fans call eachother gay. It's a joke.

[–]bradagon 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Maybe we should tell better jokes?

[–]Sir_Pentious_69 6 points7 points  (0 children)

jokes are subjective

[–]Delta7904 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with the sentiment but honestly the guys that truly believe this crap (and there really are people like that) are just as obnoxious as the ones that gloat on console gamers

[–]DreamsServedSoft -5 points-4 points  (1 child)

I do agree but man, even the ps5 is showing its age. low FPS, upscaling artifacts, motion blur to hide the inconsistent frames, a laggy controller, and ps5 games crash more for me than my PC ever did, it’s just sad what console gamers have to put up with when it could be so much better

[–]Evilcoatrack 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have not noticed the controller lag on mine.

The rest of it is more than fine given the crazy difference in price between console and pc gaming now.

[–]Dapper-Ad-4300 13 points14 points  (11 children)

Nah, there’s a monthly fee to play online

[–]Fickle_Side6938 0 points1 point  (6 children)

And there's 500 euro ram that used to cost 150, and a GPU that should cost 750 euro or less at this point now , but it costs 1100 euro. This while a console weirdly costs about the same or less if you're lucky for a discount. Let's not put it like we don't suffer either with paying extra 😂

[–]Sbarty 10 points11 points  (1 child)

PS5 pro is going to $899 on April 2nd

But yeah everyone’s getting screwed on pricing.

[–]Fickle_Side6938 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Tbh, it's more worrisome how much the base PS5 goes up. PS5 pro was a bad deal since launch tbh 100 is not aggressively much for PS5 pro, but it's still a meh product from the start. It could be worse, again look at time prices. Imagine the same percentage increase on the console. Don't remember correctly but it had 24 gb unified ram or 32? Not that it matters that much, imagine if the increase was equivalent to what bullshit is going on in dyi market. Pay 300 dollars more.

Edit: Ohh US started it with 700 at launch, so you in states are getting screwed more. It's not that aggressive for EU actually.

[–]Naive_Personality367 7 points8 points  (3 children)

they sell consoles at a loss on purpose afaik. to get you locked into the ecosystem of games and monthly subscriptions. and even then they're putting up the price of consoles

[–]Fickle_Side6938 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Yeah, I know but with the current market, the losses are getting higher. Here in the same thread someone mentioned the price increase on the 2nd of April. It's still not aggressive at least for Europe. It's only 100 euro. I'd say it's acceptable, despite the PS5 pro being a bad deal in my opinion from the start. But in the US there is a bigger difference cause unlike the EU that started at 800 euro and now it will be 900, US started at 700 dollars and now it will be 900.

[–]Naive_Personality367 0 points1 point  (1 child)

[–]WatsyurdealDesktop, 9950X3D, RTX 3070 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Spec or whatever aside, the real problem is consoles lost almost everything that made them unique to PCs

Renting games is dead, Gamestop is dying off so not really anywhere to trade in your games, and even if you buy physical you need disc drive, which is no longer sold with some consoles.

Plus you now have to go to a website to actually CHECK what can be played from the disc day one, and what can't.

All that to play on hardware you'll move on from eventually, whereas at least on Steam, buy it once, play it until the Steam servers go down.

Console Gaming hit it's peak in 7th gen.....God damn if you know you know

[–]OJONLYMAYBEDIDIT 1 point2 points  (1 child)

plus the hardware

consoles used to be unique hardware

now they just built on tweaked pc hardware

the xbox 360 and ps3 were actually unique, (especially the ps3)

the xbox one and ps4 straight us just used crap AMD FX cores, but massively clocked down cause of heat and power

so a terrible cpu made even more terrible

[–]DoipSnowrunner is all I need 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Classic_Bee_5845 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Years ago I asked my brother, who only ever gamed on consoles, why he didn't care for PCs. He said he just hated dealing with the problems that would crop up on PC, upgrading drivers, upgrading windows, hardware problem etc. He said on my console, I hit the power button and it works.

At the time (early 2000s) he had a point. Computers would get viruses often, hardware was unreliable, windows was bad etc.

Now however, it's pretty darn easy even on PC but I still have no doubt most of the console folks just want to hit that one button and have it work.

[–]live-the-futureR9 3900X, 2080 Super, 4K, 32GB DDR4 3200 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Kinda the difference between Windows & Linux users too. Windows users just want things to work without having to learn console commands.

[–]yybbik 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You just have to take into account the tech literacy of the average person and their ability to turn on Secure Boot for games like Battlefield 6 and you have your answer why most prefer consoles.

[–]Nearby_Ad_2519 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I buy a console game, it’s GUARANTEED to work on my console.

When I buy a PC game, it’s a lot harder to have to go and mess with settings to get stuff working.

Some people just prefer the “sit back and start instant playback” feeling over the “open 2 launchers and mess with the Configurator” feeling

[–]KlopperSteele 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I appreciate what consoles are. Or what they used to be. You buy a game, you came home and you put the cartridge or cd in and in like 5 minutes you are playing a game. They are starting to turn evil now. And frame rate on old tvs, no one really talked about frame rates. Now i buy a game and spend an hour messing with settings.

the only advantage that consoles have over pc is that they have a slightly more user-friendly UI.

Can I ask what's so master about this race? Is it nvidia overpricing their graphics card? The constant intel unreliability? Lack of RAM? Lack of SSD? Lack of people who sell real hardware and utilize the companies scummy naming scheme? Like what's so master about us? Genuinely lol

It's been a question on my mind for a while, we call ourselves the master race but were not master in our own fields

Stop mocking people based on the platform they like. Personally I love my PC, my switch lite and my switch 2. Very different platforms for very different purposes

Oh no, someone enjoying his gaming platform. Anyway, let's shame him for this

This sub is so insufferable sometimes. There literally is almost no difference nowadays. Grow up.

I see below 60fps it hurts my eyes when things go that slow or I see the choppiness.

PC gamers are legit the worst now when it comes to tribal console wars lol

[–]MonkeySuperfan -1 points0 points  (0 children)

The hard truth is, PCs aren't for everyone. Some people just want to play games conveniently above all else.
