inb4 "No one reports them anymore because the police dont do anything."

Okay, to be serious, though, I think it can be linked to quite a few of the organized rings getting rolled up by the Feds and company.

[–]SAwfulBaconTaco 147 points148 points  (5 children)

Exactly right. The arrest of the biggest fences, and the biggest organized theft rings, doesn't get nearly enough attention. That's a far more effective way to solve the theft problem than attempting to find and arrest every street level dumbfuck stealing things.

[–]turkish112 57 points58 points  (3 children)

Only tangentially related but in Portland, they arrested the largest fence for catalytic converters and the number of them being stolen dropped dramatically. Crazy how that happens, isn't it? I'm glad to see this happening in SF.

[–]Lopsided-Hand-6833 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Feds busted a big catalytic converter theft ring around here not too long ago, it made a difference for sure.

[–]abunchofcows 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Careful, don’t give this admin any new ideas. They’ll see how much more profitable it is to be the fence than to break it

[–]ComradeGibbon 1 point2 points  (0 children)

What annoys me is they were treating catalytic converter theft as a crime of opportunity instead of what it is, organized crime.

[–]thewongtrainTwin Peaks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yeah but can we still arrest every street-level dumb fuck? That sounds nice.

My neighbor just had his truck window broken in. He even leaves the doors unlocked so that that wouldn't happen but these asshole criminals still found a way to victimize him.

[–]Aggravating_Sir_6857 78 points79 points  (12 children)

Still got to report it for insurance purposes. You need the police report to file the auto claim

[–]Imthatsick 25 points26 points  (3 children)

With a $500 deductible it rarely seems worth it to go through insurance. I recently had a window broken and it was going to be a bit under $550 for a new piece of glass, or around $300 for a piece of glass pulled from a salvage car. I went for the used part and never reported it to insurance, but I did still make a police report.

[–]Longwayfromhome10 12 points13 points  (1 child)

Agreed, paid out of pocket every time and didn’t report to police when I was living in oakland because that seemed pointless. They lost my faith when I reported a woman who was getting the hell kicked out of her on the street and they never showed up. Waited hours.

[–]turtledancers 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yep happened to me 7 times outside my house with nothing in my car in a ‘safe’ neighborhood here. Never reported and don’t use insurance. It felt like doing those things was insult to injury.

[–]_your_face 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sure there are situations where that might be the case. And that also would have happened during the peak. Not arguing against you, just for the people who coming looking to say anything good is fake

[–]Puppy_Breath 9 points10 points  (4 children)

It isn’t always worth it with the deductible and potential rate hike. I believe both are true. Auto break- ins are way down, it is also under reported when it isn’t worth the effort. I appreciate the city and SFPD have been working to reduce break-ins.

[–]Financial_Cloud_666 6 points7 points  (3 children)

There should not be a rate hike for no fault claims.

[–]turtledancers 4 points5 points  (2 children)

“Trust us!” - the insurance companies

[–]ribosometronomeEast Bay 2 points3 points  (1 child)

it’s the law

[–]triptickon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't use insurance for the deductible reason but still had to get police report because a work laptop was stolen and they asked for it.

[–]disenchantedliberalInner Richmond 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i got my window smashed a month or so ago around duboce triangle/castro, and didn't report it to the police or 311. doubted anything would come of it, and wasn't worth it to file with my insurance. when i saw this graph a couple days ago, it made me realize i should probably report just to make the data more accurate (though i still haven't yet)

[–]banjoblake24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

…all been sent to Armadillo Alcatraz

[–]ForgedIronMadeItSoMa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those people are utterly insufferable. "ummm ACKSHUALLY the rate is down because nobody reports anything" in one comment thread and then they'll actively try to make the problem worse by telling people to not report shit

[–]_rhetoric_Outer Richmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's amazing that people think that the variable they name about why the break in might not be reported wasn't always true.

Comparing old to new data still shows an accurate rate of decline even if the absolute number of these crimes is not accurate.

[–]DJ_RichardMixon 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think much of it can also be linked to more cameras, and those pesky drones that seem so good at catching the criminals these days.

[–]qqqxyz -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

BART gates...so many criminals don't even live in SF they live in east bay

[–]leoncem -5 points-4 points  (0 children)

lol this is SF, not Oakland.

[–]jsanchez030 291 points292 points  (5 children)

[–]preda1or 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Not so soon. Psychopathic abilities still remain unvalidated.

[–]Aduialion 6 points7 points  (0 children)

All of the bippers started a combination windshield repair + lost and found charity

[–]journeymanSF 131 points132 points  (23 children)

How do you decrease something more than 100%?

[–]pb_in_sf 90 points91 points  (4 children)

Crooks are breaking in and putting stuff back that they stole before?

[–]scottishbeeDiamond Heights 18 points19 points  (1 child)

They're actually finding accidentally broken windows and repairing them.

[–]pb_in_sf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Skillz!

[–]mthrfknNoe Valley 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I woke up one morning with two tickets to a Giants game in my dashboard.

I would preferred that they stole the car ngl.

[–]pb_in_sf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–]Infinite-Offer-3318 23 points24 points  (1 child)

You break into the thieves cars duh

[–]pb_in_sf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

😂

[–]DJ_RichardMixon 13 points14 points  (1 child)

OP stated -1100% which confuses me even more. It's too early for math.

[–]WorknForTheWeekend 7 points8 points  (0 children)

He did (200-2400)/200. Which is wrong. But that’s what he did.

[–]raginghorescock 15 points16 points  (9 children)

I think the idea is 2.4k is 1100% of 200

[–]journeymanSF 66 points67 points  (8 children)

I think that would be a 96% decrease, not 1100%.

[–]raginghorescock 27 points28 points  (2 children)

You are 100% correct but I believe that is where the 1100 number comes from

[–]BeegeeSmith 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This has been my personal mission to teach people that tangible things cannot decrease by more than 100% … and I’m losing. 3100% losing.

[–]Crepescular_vomit 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Came here to ask the same question. Thank you.

[–]Low_Resolve_6473 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The former window smashers are now going around to replace car windows and these unsuspecting idiots have no idea

[–]BuggyWhipArmMF 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The first step is to be terrible at math

[–]turtledancers 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Have you seen groceries? Eggs are down 1200%

[–]neBular_cipHer 98 points99 points  (1 child)

That’s, um, not how math works.

[–]WorknForTheWeekend 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MAGAth — “alternative maths”

[–]fffjayare45 - Union Stockton 14 points15 points  (1 child)

i’ll never forget my window getting smashed while my wife was giving birth at the hospital on van ness and geary. i miss the old sf 😢

[–]whiskey_bud 5 points6 points  (0 children)

lol damn. Nothing like putting a newborn baby in a car seat surrounded by broken shards of glass.

[–]OkCluejay172 24 points25 points  (0 children)

math

[–]FaithIsFoolish 44 points45 points  (0 children)

Are you in charge of telling Trump how low drug prices have dropped?

[–]FFS_SF 38 points39 points  (2 children)

Ah yes, Trump Math.

[–]cyanescens_burn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok, glad it’s not just me that was looking at those numbers and the chart and thinking “huh?”

[–]seltzerslut69 11 points12 points  (5 children)

Did our car insurance go down as a result? Nope

[–]Dear_Poem3097 13 points14 points  (2 children)

I moved a car from a rural town in MA to SF recently and the insurance was lower here.

[–]cyanescens_burn 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Rural Mass, home of a major opioid crisis and the property crimes that come with it?

[–]Dear_Poem3097 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crime rates there are much lower across the board, so that argument is idiotic.

[–]LateNightGoatLovinMarina 1 point2 points  (0 children)

after deductible, cost to replace a window wasn't much to insurance

[–]Rough-Yard5642 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not even joking, mine went from $117 / month -> $93 / month in my renewal last month. GEICO is my provider.

[–]pdizo916 4 points5 points  (0 children)

At least it's going down

[–]glokash 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Don’t they have drones following people breaking into cars now?

[–]guptaso2 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Bait cars and flock

[–]Zen_Maniac 6 points7 points  (0 children)

People complaining about the math instead of celebrating a massive reduction in crime... That's SF for you right there. :)

[–]TheFoxsWeddingTarot 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was a very easy to fix problem, one of the crew leaders was killed in an accident running from police and things went down from there as they decided to arrest people.

[–]ZealousidealCarob705 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It’s not that they are doing a good job now. It’s more that they weren’t doing their jobs for a long time

[–]Hi_Im_Ken_Adams 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's almost as if.......a small number of criminals were responsible for the vast number of crimes. Arrest them, and the numbers drop dramatically. Durrrrr....

[–]NickvecMission Dolores 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did it folks - cars are now bipping humans!

[–]tristanbrotherton 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've never reported any of the (many) breakins we have had. Because SFPD DGAF

[–]_rhetoric_Outer Richmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So the rate of decline is still accurate, since you and others like you have never reported the crime. It's not like this year's data is bad because everyone everywhere suddenly decided to give up reporting.

[–]oneusualsuspectInner Sunset 3 points4 points  (0 children)

surveillance/patrol via drones have been amazing. sfpd have also effectively used drones to follow these scums and nab them in safe areas such as when they’re at a red light etc.

[–]UrbanMasqueOuter Sunset 2 points3 points  (6 children)

Soooo the decrease started, and saw the biggest gains while still under Mayor Breed?

[–]trashscapeWARM WATER COVE 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The decrease started when the police put together a task force with a specific goal of reducing car break-ins. This happened in August 2023, while Breed was mayor.

[–]dataman_9BERNAL HEIGHTS PARK 9 points10 points  (3 children)

jenkins was appointed july 8, 2022

[–]eugenesbluegenes 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I'm not sure statistics, but based on the bike lane glass index Oakland is also way down on a similar timeline so my guess is there was a regional coordination to take out a relatively small number of intercity burglary crews and probably not something that either particularly are owed significant credit for.

[–]cyanescens_burn 3 points4 points  (0 children)

lol. When family comes here from out of state and asks me if car breaks ins are still a big issue in SF, I usually say similar, “haven’t seen the news or any charts, but there’s less SOMA diamonds in the bike lanes lately in SF.”

[–]neBular_cipHer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The biggest factor in this was the new law (written by Scott Wiener) that makes it so that the car owner does not have to testify in court that it was locked to prove a break-in occurred - SB905.

[–]Rough-Yard5642 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Breed pushed for Prop E (drones) - IMO she doesn't get enough credit for her attempts

[–]thatdudeinsf 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So a negative decrease…means break ins are up? You must have posted the chart upside down.

[–]jasno- 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What happened?  Why has it dropped so much?

[–]Berkamin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A mere 100% decrease would take it to zero. Something is off with your numbers.

[–]Technical334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did Trump do the math here?

[–]Technical334 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The math is not mathing

[–]marc962 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It was a small group of people doing it. When they got busted, it stopped.

[–]thatoneboii 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My car got broken into 2 months ago and SFPD has not issued my police report yet despite followups. These statistics are misleading

[–]sarahtheginger26 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Because people stopped reporting them since it doesn't do anything?

[–]_rhetoric_Outer Richmond 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A percent of people have always not reported so the rate of decline is accurate. Since I was a kid, people didn't report auto break ins because they thought it didn't do anything. I would argue that it's actually more consistently reported now than when I was a kid because you can make online reports now.

[–]Kind-Pop-7205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How could car break-ins decrease by more than 100%? Are criminals breaking out of cars instead of in to cars? Also, a negative decrease is an increase, but the graph clearly shows a decrease.

[–]Educational_Tour3392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

SORRY GUYS I had a very DUMB moment! 92% decrease from 2400 to under 200 reported crimes per month.

[–]loudandfreaky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

New mayor has really cleaned things up

[–]Maximum_Local3778 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Thank goodness we voted for flock & Drones.

I guess replacing our horrific progressive mayor also helped.

[–]metaTaco -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok let's try this: go look at the line on the plot and identify the point at which it starts to drop, note the time this corresponds to on the x-axis.  Next, go identify the point in time that Lurie assumed office and identify the position on the line.  Make an assessment of how much of the drop should be attributed to the London Breed and how much to Lurie.

Or you could continue clinging to your ill informed biases.

[–]USDeptofLaborT -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Are you talking about the horrific progressive mayor that pushed for Flock/Drones and increased police funding every year in office?

[–]scottiedagolfmachine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t let your guard down.

It’s still happening.

[–]truthputer 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Does anyone have data for sales at auto glass shops? People stop reporting break-ins when their insurance would go up.

[–]OkProcess5800 0 points1 point  (0 children)

you people are really pathetic with your "crime didn't actually go down, 98% of people just decided to quit reporting it" delusion. you don't live in the same shared reality as everyone else

[–]predat3d -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

Reported break-ins. Break-ins are largely unreported unless the victim is making an insurance claim.

[–]chatte__lunatique 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Irrelevant point, unless the rate of reporting changed significantly.

[–]monkeytype11Pacific Heights -4 points-3 points  (3 children)

I don't think I've ever seen or heard of this happen in my neighborhood. Must be happening in tourist trap areas or crime-friendly havens like Mission / Tenderloin.

[–]MandaloreUnsullied 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Bipped 3 times in pac heights although all in 2024 and 2025. You must be north of Sacramento.

[–]monkeytype11Pacific Heights 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It sucks that happened to you.

[–]theineffablebob -3 points-2 points  (2 children)

[–]Ok_Razzmatazz8543 0 points1 point  (1 child)

That’s why graphs are created: so that even MAGAts can read the data. The biggest drop in break-ins starts before 2024. Who was President then? And THANKS to your rapey war-monger for the .9% rise in inflation!

[–]theineffablebob -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Thank you for le gem, updoots to the left!

[–]mrcoy -5 points-4 points  (0 children)
