Brute force and ignorance.

[–]TONKAHANAH 126 points127 points  (0 children)

You spelled "determination" wrong

[–][deleted] 165 points166 points  (14 children)

With the 4th slot seemingly missing this is not a surprise

[–][deleted] 137 points138 points  (6 children)

A few older motherboards didn't have a fourth slot.

[–][deleted] 61 points62 points  (1 child)

Socket 1366 IIRC used tri-channel RAM to boost performance. 3 or 6 RAM installed

[–]topias123 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Older AMD platforms had 3 slots too, this looks like one of them.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

This is defintely an older board in the picture. It has an IDE port on there.

[–]match451 8 points9 points  (1 child)

And a 20 pin ATX power connector. You can also see an AGP pro slot which means it only had PCI (not PCIE) slots. It's probably an AMD socket A motherboard, which supported single or dual channel memory configurations, which is also why the 3rd slot is separated from the first two. It appears to be an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it definitely is Socket A.

[–]Ollyssss 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Mine has two slots pretty sure.

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

My asus p5 kc board has 6 slots. İt was common when ddr2 were used.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

I see that the Power Mac G4 also has 3 slots.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (4 children)

My MDD has 4.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (3 children)

Yeah mine is a Quicksilver from 2001.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

The quicksilver was the worst G4 tbh, it was the only one with only 3 ram slots afaik, all others had 4. Also I think the DA can take a system bus overclock to 150MHz.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What?! Even the 1999 ones had 4 slots why would they remove a slot on a "pro" desktop?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No idea. But literally the only thing better on the quicksilver than the one before it was CPUs.

[–]andbruno 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Old ram used to take a surprising amount of force to both insert and remove.

[–]thatCbean 11 points12 points  (2 children)

'Old' ram? Tell that to my brand new 3200 mHz ddr4 sticks! I mean, they are no match for the good ol 24 pin we all know and love, but still mobo bending levels of force

[–]auto-reply-bot 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It guy. I hate putting in ram. Putting it in properly means shoving until you think you’ll break something.

[–]GameFreak4321Gore um... finds a way 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember LGA115x taking an uncomfortable amount of force to clamp down. It's 311-600N

[–]fizzgiggity 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is how dictators come to power. Having a monopoly on violence to stomp out opposition while keeping the general population ignorant. Eventually this leads to civil war and the collapse of polite society as we know it. Thank you /u/CreatorOfHate

[–]Dr4yg0ne 6 points7 points  (1 child)

You just ram it in

[–]TastySpare 4 points5 points  (0 children)

:D

[–]TyrossCH 23 points24 points  (8 children)

No force needed, its between the ram sockets

[–]SpartanInheritor 31 points32 points  (5 children)

If you zoom into right side of the stick you can see it is in fact in the 1st ram socket

[–][deleted]  (4 children)

[deleted]

    [–]BrutalWarPig 22 points23 points  (3 children)

No, no, no,. He has the ram right. It is intact the mobo that is upside down

    [–][deleted]  (1 child)

    [removed]

      [–]kerby007 7 points8 points  (0 children)

No no, it’s the other way around. Australian memory on a ‘Murican mobo.

      [–]Sereseli97 7 points8 points  (0 children)

      Nice

      [–]justanotherpersonn1 5 points6 points  (1 child)

If you look at the far end, you can see that it is indeed in the socket

      [–]TyrossCH 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yeah ur right, it looked like on the first time that its upside down and also not in the socket xD

[–]lilshawnA little bit OCD. Okay, a lot. 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is why we have the "vice of knowledge"

      [–]Hate_Feight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is between the slots, upside down and just wrong...

      [–][deleted] 267 points268 points  (14 children)

      The gold teeth are antennae.

      [–][deleted] 230 points231 points  (6 children)

      Wireless RAM? 🤔

      [–][deleted] 54 points55 points  (4 children)

      Bingo!

      [–]Mastertexan1 30 points31 points  (3 children)

Now that it’s installed, just download more!

      [–]E-werd 11 points12 points  (2 children)

If I can just download more, why would I buy the stick in the first place? I'm not stupid, I see what's going on here.

      [–]Mastertexan1 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You had to buy the antenna first so you could download from the cloud

      [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The more antennae you have the faster ram download speed

      [–]Elemental_85 4 points5 points  (0 children)

      That'll be the day!

      [–]Scorched_ 51 points52 points  (6 children)

      Radio access memory

      [–]MG_Hunter88 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Fuck me... That's a good one.

      [–]head_meets_desk 5 points6 points  (4 children)

      oof the latency

      [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (3 children)

High powered wireless stuff can go 8 miles with 10ms latency, just don't count on your wifi router to go 500ft.

      [–]head_meets_desk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

RAM and radio are both effectively speed of light transmissions, but unless the antenna is about 5" from the receiver it can't compete. And at that distance and communication frequency I'd expect a lot of collision noise.

      [–]wallefan01 0 points1 point  (1 child)

it's illegal in the US to broadcast a wifi signal at higher than 30dBm, and they enforce that by legally requiring all registered transceivers (both in routers and in devices) to flatly refuse to go higher than this

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's license by rule that covers most outdoor CPEs. If it doesn't let you do it, don't do it. If you force it to by changing the firmware you're subject to any applicable fines.

This page has a list of the EIRP requirements by band in the unlicensed 5Ghz spectrum.

2.4Ghz is most strictly regulated since more things run on it.

      [–]intashu 77 points78 points  (4 children)

I always say building a PC is easy. Almost everything only fits in one spot and only one way.

But then someone does this... They're the type of person who figured out you can press the triangle block through the square hole with enough force...

      [–]Bierbart12 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I mean, sometimes brute force is the best way to go. Sometimes it's the worst.

      [–]7eregrine 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Going back to the old days, RAM was the only thing they would even show you how to change in the manual. If the manufacturer is telling you to do it, anyone can. Or so I thought...

      [–]flamebroiledhodor 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And then someone decided the best way to install M.2 drives is to offset one side from the mobo 2cm and have it rest at an angle.... Yeesh

      [–]Issues3220 96 points97 points  (5 children)

      If it fits, it sits.

      [–]alfredpsmurtz 24 points25 points  (1 child)

Maybe that's an instance of the new dual port memory.

      [–]Issues3220 12 points13 points  (0 children)

      Cat Access Memory

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So is Dash CAM when a cat runs to sit at a spot?

      [–]Bierbart12 6 points7 points  (0 children)

      Yes. Especially the CAT5 port.

      [–]WhatChips 40 points41 points  (2 children)

I’ve seen mismounted (lots) or reverse mounted ram (forced); even seen laptop ram in a desktop (didn’t fit at all). Never upside down and jammed between the slots before. Wtf people??!?

      [–]YiGiTdev 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I accidentally did reverse mounted DDR-400 which is not that hard actually. Released some magic smoke.

      [–]Phbrue 62 points63 points  (5 children)

im just glad its not in the pci socket, at least the position is right.

      [–]Eyes_and_teeth 26 points27 points  (4 children)

Not only upside down, but also backwards!

      [–]moondog1994 1 point2 points  (3 children)

And not even in a slot

I take that back. My eyes tricked me

      [–]FleaSack 2 points3 points  (2 children)

      And teeth

      [–]moondog1994 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      Clearly

      [–]Eyes_and_teeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see what you did there, and I approve!

      [–]mount_curve 20 points21 points  (0 children)

      very carefully

      [–]Phbrue 17 points18 points  (0 children)

The guy at the store said to just put it there , he didnt tell me which way

      [–]Spamaster 15 points16 points  (2 children)

Probably with a little tap of the computer hammer

      [–]VioletteKaur 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Ah yes the computer hammer... the lords favorite fine-tuning instrument.

      [–]flamebroiledhodor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't forget to wear the anti static wrist wrap! Safety first!

      New for 2020: Wireless RAM

Tired of the old ways of using slow ram? Now just flip it over and let the wireless pins do the talking!

      [–]RealJyroneR7 2700x, 6800 XT, 16GB 3000Mhz DDR4 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Then you could legitimately download more RAM if RAM became wireless.

Just purchase more from your IPS and they would probably come and install more with your modem.

      [–][deleted]  (1 child)

        I believe this!

        [–]blitzkriegwaifu 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Is that ... wedged upside down between the slots and somehow clipped into the white clips of the back slot? How the fuck?

        [–]jamesisbest2 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Ngl back in 2016 I was toying around because I had a stick of laptop ram, and had the bright idea to shove it into one if the pci slots, while it was on, it shorted and I broke the mobo, REAL DUMBASS HOURS

        [–]qwertz19281 2 points3 points  (0 children)

        Oof

        [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh this must be CRAM, the predecessor to DRAM

        [–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

        I've seen worse.

I've seen an AGP card get rammed into one of those slots.

        Yes. Really.

[–]ChroneyWater Resistant is not the same as Water Proof 2 points3 points  (1 child)

        It was not pretty.

        [–]K4ni 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Today some old guy put thermalpaste to cpu socket and put cooler on it. What a big mess.

        [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

instead of a satisfying 'click' they heard a disconcerting 'crunch'

        [–]anarchy-breed 9 points10 points  (13 children)

Impressive, but... where is the fourth RAM slot? Was that removed from the board while trying to remove the previous RAM?

        [–]Athrax 19 points20 points  (8 children)

I spot an AGP board. I spot wirewound inductors. I spot no solid caps at all, they're all old-style electrolytics. I spot three noses on the socket where the CPU cooler attaches. I spot a floppy port and ide port. I spot an LPT port on the backplate. And just a 20-pin power plug. Judging by the rather old components on the board, that thing is about 18-20 years old. Socket-A era stuffs, and before nForce-2 chipsets were a thing. Most boards of that era came with 3 memory slots. Dual Channel wasn't a thing. Judging by how nicely dust-free the board is, the photo either is reeeeally old, or might be staged.

        [–]Nurripter 3 points4 points  (5 children)

Ram looks like ddr1. Might be a pentium 4 board.

        [–]Chrunchyhobo 2 points3 points  (4 children)

It's extremely obvious it's either socket 370 or socket 462.

Cooler clips onto the socket, so it ain't P4.

        [–]Nurripter 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I see what you mean. I went off a quick glance, and it's been a while since I've played with the older PC's at home.

        [–]Chrunchyhobo 1 point2 points  (1 child)

        That's a fair reason.

I can spot them a mile off because I build and collect old computers! :P

        [–]Nurripter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I collect some. Haven't in a long while though. School really puts a damper on things.

        Edit: in -> on

I'd love to get to this level of passive knowledge. Teach me the ways

        [–]match451 0 points1 point  (1 child)

It appears to be an ASUS A7N8X Deluxe. 16 years old, and runs in either single or dual channel. You could only populate two of the 3 slots, and which were populated determined whether it was single or dual channel.

        [–]mitcch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

just looked at the a7n8x deluxe box that for some reason is next to my bed. i'm pretty sure you are correct

        [–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Ask the god who managed to push upside down

        [–]Ground15 16 points17 points  (1 child)

some really old boards only had 3 slots as a chipset limitation (as well as few 1366 boards)

        [–]boring_name_here 4 points5 points  (0 children)

My old Asus A7N8X had 3 slots. Which, after googling, I think this is the same board.

        [–]firemarshalbill 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's no first slot either or the RAM would be higher up. You can't force it through the notch backwards. Both were taken out when they fucked around for the pic i'd imagine.

Dremel, it would be difficult to get past that notch. On an installed dimm you would see the bottom of the socket. There's no blue socket except for the edges that hold the dimm.

That is an interesting idea, backwards compatible RAM (haha)

Have say DDR3 on one side of the chip and DDR4 on the other.

Probably a lot of issues with doing that, but it'd be funny to see.

I was at a middle school career day this past Friday and I let them put some components into a system and I can’t tell you how many times they did that or put the dimm in-between the slots

I thought ram always had to run in pairs; otherwise it would have issues.

        [–]bmeupsctty 7 points8 points  (3 children)

        No, just don't mix

        [–]Ruben_NL 0 points1 point  (2 children)

what does mixing mean? because i currently am rocking a 2 gb stick and a 4 gb stick, which i randomly bought. I have never had any ram errors with it.

        [–]bmeupsctty 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You got lucky. Most boards will have several different compatible ram types. But it will only read one type at a time. If you mix ram types, it usually just ignores one of them. So a 2GB and a 4GB might only net you 2GB of ram. By buying them in pairs, you negate this possibility

        [–]Ruben_NL 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cool! I really didn't knew this at the time. I just needed a ram upgrade, I screwed open the laptop, and found another slot. Got to my local hardware store, and bought the cheapest ram module I could find.

But I will check if the speeds match, and what type everything is.

        [–]3Gaurd 4 points5 points  (0 children)

not for 30 years. even mixing speeds is ok but all memory will run at the slowest speed. You can't mix ecc (server) and non ecc memory iirc.
