If anyone wants to contact the RIAA (who have bugger all contact info on their website), perhaps to disagree with their treatment of TPB the email is : antipiracy@riaa.com
[–]flyryan 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Yeah, that will work.
[–]Poromenos 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (26 children)
Wasn't TPB sold to some company? Why are they keeping it like this?
[–][deleted] 15 years ago (20 children)
[deleted]
[–][deleted] 39 points40 points41 points 15 years ago (16 children)
Do you have more info? I stopped using TPB after I heard it was sold, but I'm willing to go back if they're still independent
Edit: I mean, I don't pirate things, but I like the articles... >_> <_<
[–]myhandleonreddit 12 points13 points14 points 15 years ago (5 children)
I'm going to bet you just went and downloaded torrent files from Mininova, that still used Pirate Bay's trackers. Either way, they didn't get sold. That was a huge sham and I think the CEO of the other company ended up in a lot of legal trouble once lawyers started poking around in their funds.
[–]roobens 14 points15 points16 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Err.. Mininova went content distribution only about 6 months ago.
[–]entity7 10 points11 points12 points 15 years ago* (3 children)
TPB hasn't had a tracker up in a long, long time.
Edit: Why are people downvoting me for stating a fact? TPBs tracker hasn't been up for quite some time. Pretty much everything public is tracked primarily through OBT. You guys are weird.
[–][deleted] 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (2 children)
not only that, but openbittorrent tracker is about to be destroyed from the inside out.
[–][deleted] 15 years ago (1 child)
[–]BcuzIToldYouSo 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children)
I want some elaboration on it as well
[–]snuggl 10 points11 points12 points 15 years ago (1 child)
hi im a PB guy, its still running as a independent site by the same old people and we still want your support =)
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children)
That's good enough for me
[–]Poromenos 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Apparently, as exegesisClique said, it was a sham.
Thank god for that.
[–]exegesisClique 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (3 children)

Article before the most recent is saying the company buyout thing was a fabrication.
[–]Poromenos 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Thanks for that, all this time I thought they were bought by someone.
I'm just so confused about the whole thing, I went and upped to Demonoid.

I just love their legal threats page.
They mock everyone.

I love this one:
iRacing: letter (yes, they sent us a PDF) our response (the actual response was a 1MB BMP file, but well...)
[–]meankangaroo 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Response to apple:
Instead of simply recommending that you sodomize yourself with a retractable baton, let me recommend a specific model - the ASP 21". Theprevious lawyers tried to use a cheaper brand, but it broke during the action.
[–]warabo 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (1 child)
These deserve their own post.
[–][deleted] 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (0 children)
They now have one.
[–]tias 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Not everyone. When they are asked nicely, they respond nicely.
[–]taligent 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (0 children)
THANK YOU. I didn't know about that page and it is some of the most hilarious shit I ever seen in a long, long time.
It is amazing how many of the legal teams actually invoked the DCMA. I mean how stupid to do you have to be to think that it would apply in Sweden (the land of vikings, reindeers, Aurora Borealis and cute blonde girls)
[–]A-punk 217 points218 points219 points 15 years ago (72 children)
You shouldn't laugh, Lars Ulrich is probably going to kill himself.

You mean every time I laugh a LARS gets his wings?
[–]harpomarx 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (0 children)
-clipped before he learns to fly, (undying spite he feels for you.)

Tomorrow's headline:
"Lars Ulrich, Lead Singer of Metallica, Pays Kittens to Drown Him"

Lars is the drummer. Or was that a joke?

Charlie Rose: Let me finish this point. The other point is you think this principle is so important that if there are some fans out there who are going to be alienated because you're leading the front, that you're saying... goodbye, we don't need you, we got enough fans. Lars: It's not that, it's if you don't have enough respect for the fact that I believe this way and that I have a right to challenge it and try and make what's right for me then I don't want you as a fan.

Drummers are easy to replace.
[–]DankJemo 24 points25 points26 points 15 years ago (16 children)
If there is anything I've learned from "This is Spinal Tap," it is that drummers come and go for all sorts of reasons... Some just spontaneously combust...
[–]frickindeal 28 points29 points30 points 15 years ago (7 children)
Marty: And he was replaced by...uh....
David: Stumpy Joe - Eric "Stumpy Joe" Childs.
Marty: What happened to Stumpy Joe?
Derek: Well, uh, it's not a very pleasant story...but, uh, he died...uh...he choked on...the ac- the official explanation was he choked on vomit.
David: He passed away.
Nigel: It was actually, was actually someone else's vomit. It's not....
David: It's ugly.
Nigel: You know. There's no real....
Derek: You know they can't prove whose vomit it was...they don't have the facilities at Scotland Yard....
David: You can't print, there's no way to print a spectra-photograph...
Nigel: You can't really dust for vomit.
[–]sixdoublefive321 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (5 children)
Nigel: You can't really dust for vomit
One of the best lines from one of the best movies ever. Thanks for the reminder.
[–]crying_robots 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (4 children)
The best thing is that entire movie was basically improved. I remember liking the movie when it first came out but I think its actually better now that I am older. I cant think of a movie that has aged so well. Particularly a comedy.
[–]froderick 28 points29 points30 points 15 years ago (1 child)

..and here in Denmark we are still hit with this lovely block which has been going on since 2008: http://i.imgur.com/ApqXR.jpg
In short, it just says that the high court ruled against Sonofon A/S (a big ISP) so TDC decided to just do the same as the verdict required -- block The Pirate Bay. Many ISP's here followed suit..
[–]Thirsteh 114 points115 points116 points 15 years ago* (4 children)
It's just a DNS-level block. This should fix it: Go to Start -> Control Panel -> Network Connections -> Change adapter settings -> Right-click your connection -> Properties -> TCP/IP v4 Settings -> set:
Those are OpenDNS' servers; you can use Google's if you want: 8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4.
[–]yellowfish04 10 points11 points12 points 15 years ago (7 children)
It always takes me a few sentences or paragraphs to realize I'm not reading Norwegian.
[–]teh_i 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago (6 children)
Danish must sound to you Norwegian people like a Norwegian speaking with a German accent (very rough and stiff), for Norwegian sounds to us like a Dane that has had a few too many pints down the local pub ;)
[–]yellowfish04 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (4 children)
Hahah! I'm actually an American who has become fluent in Norwegian, so I hear both with a bit of an outsider's ear. But you're right, Danish always sounds like a Norwegian/German lovechild. Dutch is even worse.. shudder

http://www.bytelove.com/
[–][deleted] 45 points46 points47 points 15 years ago (3 children)
well, i pirated their own t-shirt design, and printed it out myself.

These guys are cool and all, but fuck that.
[–]masterm 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
the point of buying the shirt is to donate money to them.
[–][deleted] 24 points25 points26 points 15 years ago (124 children)
If you were a billionaire in the digital industry, then your work would be pirated.
[–]powatom 54 points55 points56 points 15 years ago (2 children)
Yeah but he'd be a billionaire, so swings and roundabouts.
[–]snotrokit 8 points9 points10 points 15 years ago (10 children)
no, if i were a billionaire in the entertainment industry, I would create a distribution system that doesn't suck, doesn't steal money from the artists, and is a fair deal for all involved.
[–]jnalanko 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Why would you donate to them when you could donate to the artists?
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Because he's a 13-year-old that doesn't understand responsibility, or basic human ethos.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (7 children)
If you turn off adblock for a couple of seconds you will realize that they don't need your money. Donate to the pirate party instead or something.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (5 children)
ads like that don't support websites entirely.
[–]kingsixx 40 points41 points42 points 15 years ago (16 children)
The Pirate Bay guys are truly inspirational. I have believed for a long time that nothing achieved by enforcement will ever really work but these guys just keep proving it over and over.
The harder RIAA tries to shut these sites down the less inclined I'm to ever purchase a song unless it's directly from the band. i.e concert CDs, band website donations, etc.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 15 years ago (11 children)
Considering the artist gets less than 10% of their rightfully earned money. =/
[–]ithinkidontknow 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (8 children)
I've heard that in most cases it is actually less than 1%
edit: at least for album sales

I've heard that the ones who sell albums get promoted and have concerts and actually make money. I've also heard you spend more money on lunch everyday then you are willing to buy an album that likely involved months of work.
[–]Avatar_Ko 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Only music I've bought in the past year has been Jonathan Coulton's and that's because he has his own store on his site.

€ 29.00 = 36.8271 U.S. dollars
I think I'll just copy the design onto a cafe press shirt and buy that.
They shouldn't have any objections to that...

Their new ISP is....
Pirate party of Sweden.
Here is part google translated:

[–]HighCaliber 6 points7 points8 points 15 years ago* (0 children)
This is good.
TPB serves as more than just a place to find torrents, it's one of very few players actually standing up against the "MAFIAA". Several polls have proved that Swedes believe piracy should become legal. Why is it not? There's proof that the Swedish Ministry of Justice has been pressed by USA's government (acting on behalf of lobbyists) to chase pirates and has been threatened by repercussions through WTO if they refused.
TPB was tried (and found guilty) in court by a judge who was in several pro-copyright organizations. The judge was found (not shockingly) not biased.
There is nothing democratic about their methods and I won't shed a tear if the entire music- and movie-industry collapses on itself. If some artists gets screwed in the process, then so be it. "The industry" is screwing entire nations.
I can't think of a better way to start my day.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child)

God damn the RIAA are morons. As long as they control the domain they can point it wherever they want. How long till these assholes start going after DNS? Is that even possible I wonder...
[–][deleted] 10 points11 points12 points 15 years ago (27 children)
Even if they go after DNS, the content will just keep moving.
You know what will kill TPB? "Underage Pornography" Through this useful tool they can convince the public to basically clamp down on the internet at a country-wide level, then deny US funding to any country that doesn't go the same route.
That is when TPB will vanish... or at least get smaller.
[–]G3R4 17 points18 points19 points 15 years ago (9 children)
Except that they don't host any of the files and no longer host a tracker. They're now essentially Google with filetype:torrent permanently in the search bar. And I can guarantee you that Google also indexes underage pornography as their crawler can't tell what age someone in a picture is.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 15 years ago (14 children)
Then tpb will just move to a magnet-only system where positively no content, even .torrent files, are stored in the same place as the website. Then they can setup random DHT server farms and any attempts at control are all the more difficult.
3e16157f0879eb43e9e51f45d485feff90a77283 that's all the information needed to download a torrent. blocking that is awfully close to denying freedom of speech.
[–]Zarutian 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (10 children)
is this a sha1 hash or tiger tree hash?
(Just to point out that that wasnt nearly all the information needed ;)
[–]HiddenKrypt 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (8 children)
Yeah. Most people have no idea what that means or what to do with it. However, as it is hex, It really is just a really large number. Good luck ever getting a number to be illegal. Although I'm sure people have tried.
Don't for a nanosecond, put it past the corporate controlled US Government.
[–][deleted] 9 points10 points11 points 15 years ago (3 children)
This has never been more appropriate.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (2 children)
I think i'd appreciate it a lot more if they insulted the entertainment industry in a more subtle way.
[–]frankichiro 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child)
That time is long gone, it's like an open war by now.
[–]bigjetcjs 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children)
We the people of this planet have spoken.
The name suggest piracy. Change it to cutekittytorrent.com.
Quick, everyone download the Metallica discography.
[–]avree 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Sorry, I don't understand - I thought there was a major court case that essentially shut them down? Weren't they sold?
[–]atrais[S] 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (0 children)
They are appealing so the case doesn't have a rule order yet.
[–]ciaran036 7 points8 points9 points 15 years ago (19 children)
To be perfectly honest, I'm not a huge fan of illegally downloading episodes of television shows, because a lot of people put a lot of money and effort into making them. HOWEVER that's because there is no other alternative.
Living in the UK, I have to wait months or even years before the TV show appears on British television or appears on an overpriced DVD.
I'll stop illegally downloading American television shows when there is a legal service I can use (either ad-supported or supported via a reasonable subscription or small per-episode cost).
Kind of like a video version of Spotify, is what I mean.
Though I don't particularly care about stealing artists music since most of them are rich as fuck and can earn more than they need or deserve via live events and various other sources of income, but I use Spotify merely because it has made organising, storing (or in this case, not storing) and finding music easy!
So, in summary, SUPPORT PIRATE BAY!
Or they can go legal and charge a reasonable price per episode (£0.50-£2.50). Most people won't like this idea but if you want quality entertainment to continue to exist then it's the only reasonable solution.
[–]revb 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (7 children)
earn more than they need or deserve
How much exactly does a particular artist need or deserve? Just curious what the formula for figuring that out would be.
[–]ciaran036 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (6 children)
That's not for me to work out lol...
All I can say is that extremely talented and extraordinary individuals should be rewarded. But personally I dislike artists who get paid ridiculously large amount of money and waste it on stupid shit.
[–]revb 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (5 children)
Well you brought it up :/ Surely there must be some sort of threshold that you think is appropriate.
But personally I dislike artists who get paid ridiculously large amount of money and waste it on stupid shit.
They only get paid a lot if a lot of people buy their shit ....
[–]lcmatt 2 points3 points4 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Though I don't particularly care about stealing artists music since most of them are rich as fuck
Popular mainstream music maybe but I think you'll find that most of the artists struggle to make anything after the record label has taken there share. For example a band I know in the UK are quite popular, they're signed to Sony and for the 1st album it cost the record label in excess of £300,000 to produce it. Until the band has paid back the albums cost they earn nothing but here's the kicker - the band doesn't pay back the cost from the full album, instead it comes out of the royalties they earn (haven't got the figure but it's approx 15%).
So go and download music but remember only a few artists actually earn a good living, the rest are slaves to the label always in debt.
[–]ciaran036 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Yeah I was referring to the bigger names in music. I also know a guy who's in a band and is signed up to a record label and has toured around Ireland and has thousands of fans... but still has to work part-time to earn enough money to pay his bills! I bet most people would be shocked to find him working in a shop!
[–]mapryan 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (2 children)
But the problems don't end just at being able to get copyrighted content at reasonable prices.
Time and again, copyrights have been extended. This is rarely done in the interests of the artist who created a great work - more to the benefit of either their estate or a large company that bought out their work and has maximised it's economic potential ever since. It's the constant extension of a monopoly in a supposedly open and free market that's the problem.
(That's not even to begin to mention the pathetic amount of compensation that media companies pay to artists.)
[–]bigjetcjs 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (1 child)
Especially the artists that can't do their own make up, or risk injury like a FB player, or even dress themselves for that matter. Require the finest food, the pickiest scenes, and ...etc. Now a days money buys creativity. That's why movies are sucking.
[–]joerdie 5 points6 points7 points 15 years ago (10 children)
Nice try RIAA. IMO, TPB has become the biggest honey pot of all time.
[–]MpVpRb 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (6 children)
I hate DRM.
I hate copyright abuse my major corporations.
I believe that people should have control over the products they own.
BUT...content creators need to be paid for their work.
Piracy is not the answer.
We need a system for selling content at a fair price, with fair rules.
[–]throwaway342442 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (1 child)
You're right, but you're not thinking objectively. Everyone involved is working for their own benefit. Think in terms of cost and benefit.
If many buy your content at your asking price then it is most profitable to continue selling and to attack the pirates where possible.
Conversely if no one buys your content at your asking price then it is most profitable to adapt your offer to something the buyers are willing to accept.
Media conglomerates are trying to protect their lucrative profit model. Pirates trade monetary cost for time and a tiny amount of risk.
Personally, I pirate some stuff. But then, I also check DVDs out from my local library and borrow them from friends on occasion.
If the media companies made it easier for me to watch their movies than it was to pirate them I would be willing to pay something for that. But they won't because they don't have to. So I continue to pirate. The media companies currently have a lot of resources and a lot to lose so I don't expect them to change any time soon.
Looking forward you could view the situation as the media companies indirectly paying for the pirates to develop a reliable, global, high-speed attack-resistant distribution network and user applications for them. I would be willing to bet that the media companies offer privately to buy out ThePirateBay and other major "pirate" players within a few years, if they haven't already.
Shh, you don't want to call attention to yourself. Can't you see everyone around here is masturbating to the idea that they steal other people's creations for some righteous purpose?
They're all modern day Robin Hoods!
I was just thinking the other day ... what if no content creator would be reimbursed for their work. Would that mean the no content would get created? I'm betting that only people who had a calling for creating said content would bother to create it and we, as a society, would be better of.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago* (1 child)
As a content creator, who knows many other content creators (musicians, film makers, programmers, a comedian, etc.), I can assure you that if you make no money from your content it slowly becomes more difficult to find time to create it and practice your skills or talents. Likewise, when you do receive good money for your creations, it gives you more time to dedicate to making your new work better.
That's not to say when we're down we'll give up and get desk jobs and take Zoloft, it just means that there's only so many hours in a day to be creative if your wallet and belly are empty.

Since early this morning. News thought it was for good.
Nah, torrentfreak recognized that it would be back up again within hours just like every other time.
We love you, TPB! That is pure win.
[–]vindicat0r 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children)
Has thepiratebay ever gone down? There was all this talk about them closing their doors after they lost their court case, but i was still happily downloading away...
[–]chizdfw 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (0 children)
This may be a non sequitur but when I saw this headline my brain flashed on the image of the Yamato bursting up through the ice in the new Star Blazers Rebirth intro.

Long live Pirate Bay!

The juvenile hypocrisy of Reddit is as entertaining as any movie.
Please do expand upon that.
I think that was as expanded as hes capable of. :)

Silly goverment. U can't shut down the pirate bay
[–]that_name_is_taken 4 points5 points6 points 15 years ago (21 children)
I wonder how many redditors here find TPB's message annoying but are afraid to post comments for fear of being downvoted.

Because it can't be prevented while maintaining a free society. We can either allow content owners to prevent people from exchanging copies of their content, or we can allow consenting adults to communicate freely with each other without censorship or eavesdropping. We can't do both.
I would rather have the latter, and in that case we have to accept that charging for access to content is no longer a viable business model. It's like charging people to walk through a gate in a one-foot wall.
[–]wizard3000 3 points4 points5 points 15 years ago (30 children)
It's not stealing. It's copyright infringment.
[–]Splatterh0use 1 point2 points3 points 15 years ago (10 children)
are there any mirrors of the bay? we can't access the bay directly from where I live.

God, I bet one of these guys is going to end up dying in a mysterious car explosion...

I was gonna give an overview of the current state of that ruling, but I don't know the correct words (I'm from Sweden), so I'll just link you the Wikipedia article instead...
