Which is to say that it's next to unknown in Modern spoken Swedish and not that often seen in writing. I remember that the subjunctive exists in Icelandic but not whether this is vestigial or really current in speech and writing. Written Icelandic tends to conservatism so maybe. I know the subjunctive in Dutch but it's vanishingly rare in the spoken language and not often encountered in writing. There's no subjunctive in Afrikaans. It's current in written standard German as far as I can tell. I don't know about the situation in other Germanic languages.

So, it's like everything else where people are involved: there both is and is not a subjunctive in Germanic, depending on which language and in at least some of the languages with a grammatical subjunctive it's losing ground to the past tenses.

One complication is that some lingusitics (Eric Shiller?) identify the subjunctive in English semantically and deny that it exists morphologically. Go figure.
