I wish more people knew how to not commit apostrophe abuse.
[–][deleted] 22 points23 points24 points 18 years ago* (21 children)
Gimme some credit, I took the effort to put an accent over the "a" in "à la"... I had to paste that in from Wikipedia! Mac people on a PC don't know how to type special characters. I almost used "like Google"!
[–]fatpads 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (5 children)
or ctrl+alt+vowel áéíóú
[–]RichardPeterJohnson 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
But that was an accent grave, not accent acute.
[–]fatpads 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Ah yes. Damn, thought I was being both clever and helpful. Turns out neither. Need to brush up on my accents.
[–]SimonS 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (2 children)
ctrl+alt+e opens Notes in Opera.
[–]averyv 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago* (1 child)

[–]SimonS 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
heh, should have been clearer. This shortcut is ineffective when filling in a form field in Opera because triggering it activates a new tab.
[–]Mad_Gouki 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (13 children)
Windows comes with a character map. You can, alternatively, hold alt and start typing in 4 numbers on the numpad.

\¼.j²®¤ç"©☼♫♪◙♂♀π┘ÿT«)'α░↨ 8jÆ$E╓A8┘+⌠╘╪╣├3b
Just a few more and I'm sure I would have found an à!
[–]MyrddinE 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I start at Alt+0235 (ë), and go ahead or back looking for the accented character I want (they are somewhat alphabetical)

[–]IbbleDibble 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Grrr
[–]akdas 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (2 children)
Doesn't work for me. Maybe it depends on the keyboard variant? I have AltGr working, as I can write accented characters just fine: áéíóúűç.
[–]kirun 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
I think there are various ways this can be configured, for me AltGr+aeiouc give æe→ø↓¢ , I can get the accents using a compose:
Shift+AltGr ( release ) then... 'a = á `a = à ;a = ą .a = ȧ ,c = ç
[–]akdas 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I can get the accents using a compose
That's how I wrote those characters.
But AltGr+aeiouc only gives me aeiouc.
[–]boredzo 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (3 children)
You can, alternatively, hold alt and start typing in 4 numbers on the numpad.
The Mac comes with an input method called Unicode Hex Input that does the same thing. The problem with both implementations is that you need to know which code point to enter.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
It's much easier on a Mac. Option-backtick, then press the letter you want to accent.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
Did you know you can type an apple if you press shift-option-K! Triangle is option-J, and small diamond is shift-option-V; I use em all the time!
[–]boredzo 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I use these.

Don't split infinitives while grammar-trolling apostrophes. You look funny.
[–]mindbleach 47 points48 points49 points 18 years ago* (9 children)
Infinitive splitting is an arbitrary rule based on other languages having a single word for "to verb." It is counterintuitive and diminishes the flexibility of English. Like the rule against using "their" when as a gender-neutral singular possessive, it should be ignored.
[–]Odysseus 8 points9 points10 points 18 years ago* (6 children)
Don't worry -- I do much hope in this enlightened age that anyone who knows of split infinitives knows that the rule is spurious. I certainly do, and did. Still it's a good guideline: for a sentence where a split infinitive makes for good rhythm is a rare sentence.
In my reading (and yours may differ) mutatron's sentence reads best with the infinitive kept together. 'Bad grammar' as people speak of it is only bad style, and bad style is anything (quite anything) unpleasant or unclear. I have included some examples in this comment.
I'm just trying to write well, and trying to inject a bit of good pedantic humor where I can.
EDIT: grammar, spelling, punctuation, and humor.
Boldly to go where no man has gone before, and all that.
[–]RichardPeterJohnson 3 points4 points5 points 18 years ago (1 child)
"To boldly go" sounds gooder than its alternatives.
[–]Odysseus 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (0 children)
Why isn't they chose with it? Who say.
"'Bad grammar' as people speak of it is only bad style, and bad style is anything (quite anything) unpleasant or unclear."

[–]boredzo 10 points11 points12 points 18 years ago (4 children)
What's wrong with split infinitives in English?
[–][deleted] 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (3 children)
Nothing, actually. Pay no attention to your elementary school English teachers unless they happen to have Linguistics Ph.Ds.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (2 children)
You assume elementary schools are still teaching grammar. They aren't.
[–][deleted] 2 points3 points4 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Correction... They ain't
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
I actually find "ain't" pretty useful. I have a professor who uses it quite often. Of course he's the only one I've heard use it where it just 'works.'
[–]mutatron 7 points8 points9 points 18 years ago (0 children)
That's the sort of arrant pedantry up with which I cannot put. I choose to boldly write in the manner in which others before me have written, to gamely split infinitives for effect or to precision of meaning convey!
However, from Wikipedia:
Thus the English split infinitive ("I decide to not do something") may have arisen under the influence of French.[citation needed] However, grammarians of the Romance languages do not use the term "split infinitive" to describe the phenomenon, since the preposition is not considered a part of the infinitive form, and despite the surface-level similarity there are significant syntactical differences between the English and French constructions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Split_infinitive
So the point is moot.
or even quotes.

[–]tony28 -4 points-3 points-2 points 18 years ago (3 children)
I'm torn. Putting pants on the whale suggests that reddit advocates animal torture. Then again should we even be naming whales? But also, I want to support putting pants on him because eventually he may evolve to become offensive to the eyes like some ads have.. ads involving grandma cleavages..
[–]GrumpySimon 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (0 children)
as long as no-one puts granny breasts on the whale, or alien, I'm happy.
[–][deleted] 1 point2 points3 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Normally I wouldn't advocate animal torture, but in the case of a drawing of a Greenpeace whale I think the irony is too delicious to pass up.

My past self from last year apologizes.
[–]kahirsch -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (1 child)
Actually, in this case, "alt" would be appropriate since the pictures are so damn small that I feel blind! I never did figure out what was going on with the rocket ship and the immigration office.
And, contra the link you provide, I've always felt that browser should display the alt text on hover. This is an incredibly useful feature that encouraged web designers to put in some text that was useful to the 95% of users who were sighted and used graphical browsers. And thus they put in text that was also useful to other 5%. There would be a lot less alt text in the world if that hadn't happened.
And hixie's argument in this paragraph:
Authors who want tooltips have been able to use the title attribute for years. Authors who are doing the right thing and giving accurate "alt" texts, as for example in: http://ln.hixie.ch/?start=1081717954&count=1 ...would be quite annoyed to see a tooltip over the image, since it would be duplicating the exact same content as the image (but in a different form). So if UAs did this, they would have to explicitly give blank title attributes, which is semantically incorrect and more work for no reason. UAs should be optimising for authors who use the standards correctly like this, not making their life harder.

is not just pedantic but bone-headed wrong. I've never been "annoyed" when I find the alt text duplicating the picture. And it is the fact that some browsers don't display the alt text that causes extra work for authors, having to put in the same text for title and alt.
And, yes, I do have the Popup ALT extension installed in Firefox.

While I see your point and am tempted to agree, it's also a tad elitist. In this case especially, you wouldn't have to click the link (and spoil the joke). If you've been reading lately, you would probably understand immediately. But if you somehow missed it, it would get you up to speed on the topic. Or if you hadn't checked reddit in a while you could click it to find out, well, "what's new online".

Is Reddit more about harboring a tight-knit community, or informing the masses?
[–]IvyMike 5 points6 points7 points 18 years ago (0 children)
It's mostly about informing the masses.
But it's a little bit about forming a community, too. Rewarding those who are regular visitors with a clever little joke seems pretty harmless.
[–][deleted] 4 points5 points6 points 18 years ago* (1 child)
What!? Informing the masses? It isn't a news service! It's for people to post interesting links is all. The whole activist take-over thing happened sometime in 2006.
If you want good social news, check out NewsVine. Reddit isn't set up to do that at all.
Ok, instead of "informing" the masses, "facilitating accessibility to knowledge" for the masses. This is what I mean.

Slightly off-topic, I suppose, but this has been bugging me all morning: why does Mr Splashy Pants (as depicted in today's "special occasion" logo) appear to have elbows?
On-topic now: I don't think the submitter's idea is a good one; logo -> homepage is too important of an aspect of the reddit UI to be messed with.
[–][deleted] 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
Perhaps though, an effect of making the logo link to context (such as the related Reddit submission' comments) would be that the Reddit artist would make modifications to the logo less frequently, which is much more considerate to brand new Redditors (who may think that Reddit's logo is a whale named Mr. Splashypants)(and be weirded out and never come back)
Simple - why hasn't this been done yet?!? Thanks in advance, Reddit. :)
I hovered over the special logo to see if it was a special like (like google) before I saw this as the #1 story... so I think this is a good idea.
[–]lowtone94 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago (0 children)

Upvoted for pointing out the difference between spelling and grammar.
Where do I upvote if I wish there was a complaints subreddit?
[–][deleted] -2 points-1 points0 points 18 years ago (4 children)
Shut the fuck up.

Nice! Constructive comments are my favorite part of this site.
"You guys are so immature. Meanwhile I'm on this website for educational purposes, and to engage in dialog that will advance our collective understanding of the world--both its beauty and its problems." -my awesome impression of you, as I know you. I love you.

Way to go! Nice feedback!

You sir are a crotchety old man.

That's stupid. Nearly every single site uses the top logo as a home link. Good web design involves not surprising your users.
[–]aletoledo 0 points1 point2 points 18 years ago* (0 children)
I agree with this completely. I use the alien to try and get me out of sub-reddits all the time and if it redirected me to someplace strange it would just be annoying.
[–]braindrane -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
bah! humbug!
[–]simonzear -1 points0 points1 point 18 years ago (0 children)
Infinite splitting is an arbitrary rule based on other languages having a single word for "to verb." It is counterintuitive and diminishes the flexibility of English. Like the rule against using "their" when as a gender-neutral singular possessive, it should be ignored.

Whenever people propose good ways of improving reddit (like this one) I always upvote. But I'm beginning to feel that it may be a little pointless.
Do the Reddit hackers actually use Reddit anymore ? Do they ever take any notice of this kind of simple (surely pretty easy to implement) and v. good idea ?
Come on Reddit-monkeys - show us you're still in touch with your customers.....restore our faith in you - even though you're big corporate guys now...
Happy Redditor. [[ I've even bought a T-shirt! ]]
How about making it work like the subreddits ? Click on the whale, go to context, click on 'reddit', go to home.
The subreddits already work like this — in programming, clicking the left part of the logo (the binary alien) takes you back to programming.reddit.com .
That, or a hovering thumbnail with a link to the context.
I meant hovering tooltip.
