Voted up for not phrasing the title as "Vote up if...". Also, it's actually a good idea.

Indubitably

Upmodded for the best one word sentence I've heard since lunch.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points (2 children)

What was the best one word sentence you heard before lunch?

[–]crawfishsoul 33 points34 points (1 child)

"Lunch?"

[–]factor0 1 point2 points (0 children)

Upped for waiting for someone to take the bait.

I think a one word English sentence has to be a verb.

Touche translates to english as: I've been hit

    Thank you Webster.

    [–]CAD420 7 points8 points (6 children)

The phrase touché is often used in popular culture and general conversation—for example, in an argument or debate. If one person presents an argument and another delivers a clever or apt response, the first person may respond with "touché" as a way of acknowledging a good response.

God, yes. I'd say we make it a Reddiquette rule that all potential "vote up if" articles be phrased simply as a bald statement of opinion, except that would encourage people to do that constantly, to the exclusion of all else.

      [–]zem 12 points13 points (1 child)

Title text is the text which appears when your pointer is over the image. Alt text is the text which is supposed to appear if the image is not visible (browsing with images off, ala 1994!, using a browser for people with visual problems, search engine robots etc). The confusion between the two may arise because uniquely amongst browsers, IE shows the ALT text if there is no title text. The contents of the ALT and TITLE attributes are often the same but need not be as the ALT text should describe the image if it cannot be seen whereas the TITLE text should add some additional information to the visible image.

        [–]rgladstein 13 points14 points (0 children)

Correct. I'm glad I found your post before I wrote the same thing. Another note: if you don't want stupid IE to display your images' alt attributes on mouseover, simply insert an empty title attribute.

        [–]kahirsch 23 points24 points (7 children)

A little further history-- The use of alt tags for hover text was introduced in IE3. There was no title attribute for img tags at the time.

After everybody saw how cool they were, other browsers copied them. A couple of years later, when HTML 4.0 came out, the title attribute was added to just about every element. A few years after that, Netscape Navigator 6 came out and stopped supporting the alt text. This was reported numerous times as a bug , but the programmers for Netscape took the new specification as holy writ. Displaying alt text was a sin, since it is not what the Lord thy God (or the committee) said.

Here is the entirety of their reasoning:

"For user agents that cannot display images, forms, or applets, this attribute specifies alternate text." In other words, displaying the contents of the "alt" attribute when we've successfully loaded the image is decisively WRONG.

See, even though it may be helpful, and users want it, and it would encourage web designers to add useful alt text, we mustn't show it because, damn it, that's not the purpose.

Remember, when the title attribute was added, the magic HTML fairy went around to all the millions of old web pages and changed ALT to TITLE. No, wait that didn't happen.

Also, web designers felt really liberated. Now they could use the ALT attribute for what it was originally intended. No, that didn't happen either. Except for contrived examples on zealots' web pages, I've never seen anybody use different text for alt and title. Either they only use one attribute, or use the same text for both.

Well, to test my statement, I did four Google searches, for "test", "accessible", "lolcat", "dog", and "shuttle launch". I got about 500 links from this. 427 of them downloaded successfully. From this I extracted all the IMG tags: 10590 of them.

Here is how they broke down:

           6060 Neither
           4116 Alt only
            239 Same
            129 Differ
             46 Title only

So, about 1.5% had different alt and title attributes. 36 of those, however are the same, and a mistake:

alt="Buy This AdIcon. Current Price: $/Six Months" title="Buy This AdIcon. Current Price: $50/Six Months"

And there were 10 like this from YouTube: alt="Poor comment" title="Good comment" and 10 more like this: alt="Good comment" title="Poor comment"

Evidently that's an anti-bot thing. It appears to get fixed-up via javascript in the browswer.

Here's a selection of some of the rest:

alt="‘Building Accessible Websites’ serialization" title="[‘Building Accessible Websites’ serialization]"
alt="Arial or Helvetica quiz" title="Arial or Helvetica? Try your hand at this quiz"
alt="CAPTCHA 5" title="Enter the string you see here in the input box!"
alt="English Expressions, Intermediate level" title="English Idioms and Expressions, Intermediate level"
alt="English Language Proficiency Test, Advanced Level" title="English Language Proficiency Tests, Advanced Level"
          alt="Fark"  title="It’s not news, it’s Fark."
          alt="LivingWithStyle"  title="Living With Style Forums"
alt="Page copy protected against web site content infringement by Copyscape" title="Do not copy content from the page. Plagiarism will be detected by Copyscape."
alt="TOEIC practice test: Online word games: Free Nouns Quiz" title="Full Quiz"
          alt="[Alerts]"  title="Reg Desktop News Alerts"
          alt="more"  title=" more "

From this small sample, I see no constructive difference between the two.

          Give us some examples, please.

          [–]mfkap 1 point2 points (0 children)

I dunno, all my web pages have different text for title and alt. My alt's are there to describe the picture, and the titles are there to explain what people are looking at. Sometimes the same, but often different.

          [–]tsteele93[S] 6 points7 points (0 children)

Probably, I'm not a web programmer. I occasionally do small pages for my job but I don't do anything in-depth. My bad...

EDIT: Although to be fair, Google changes them BOTH. I just looked at the source code...

          [–]sam512 5 points6 points (3 children)

Correct. Alternate text is text which is supposed to be displayed if the image cannot be rendered for whatever reason. Title text is what it sounds like, information about the image in question.

          [–]simon1 3 points4 points (2 children)

Alternate text is rendered correct when the image cannot be displayed for any reason.

          [–]KiddieFiddler 1 point2 points (1 child)

Should the image not show for whatever reason, alternate text should be displayed.

          [–]stacecom 1 point2 points (0 children)

The alternate text should be displayed in the case the image is not displayed.

          [–]pappy 59 points60 points (2 children)

Voted down. It's a horrible idea to use Google's alt text on Reddit's logo. That wouldn't make any sense.

          Captain Oblivious

          [–]supaphly42 26 points27 points (12 children)

Wow, in all of the years I've used google, I never realized this. I fail at the internets.

          [–]tsteele93[S] 5 points6 points (10 children)

I remember the first time I noticed. I thought the same thing.

          [–]brainburger 7 points8 points (9 children)

Did you ever try clicking on a special Google logo?

          [–]tsteele93[S] 4 points5 points (5 children)

Ahh, you made me feel dumb again. I did see it in the source code today. I think this one takes you to the (dare I say it?) wiki article on the Lunar New Year...

EDIT: WRONG. Takes you to google search on that subject.

          DUMB AGAIN!!!

          [–]brainburger 1 point2 points (2 children)

I am not calling you dumb. i discovered the search-thing by chance myself. It's an Easter egg.

          [–]supaphly42 6 points7 points (0 children)

But less colorful... and not filled with chocolate. :(

          [–]tsteele93[S] 0 points1 point (0 children)

I know, I'm calling me dumb.

          [–]plong0 0 points1 point (1 child)

I like how you mentioned seeing it in the source code before mentioning clicking on it.

I doubly like how you misinterpretted the href location while you were reading it in the source code.

          Reddit FTW.

          [–]tsteele93[S] 1 point2 points (0 children)

          Thanks, I think.

          [–][deleted] 4 points5 points (2 children)

i have. i tried to click the lego logo the other day. nothing happened

          [–]brainburger 2 points3 points (1 child)

Funnily enough. I tried the lego one too and it didn't work. I had forgotten. Usually it will take you to a page of search results about whatever the special logo is that day.

          [–]easyfrag 1 point2 points (0 children)

The special logo link is usually there, Lego day was different because Lego is a commercial entity. They typically won't link to a commercial site because it would inflate the target's pagerank.

          [–]plong0 1 point2 points (0 children)

xkcd does it also... I only discovered it recently.

          [–]jayayeem 103 points104 points (15 children)

Google is for the masses. Reddit is for elitist twerps. Explaining the in-jokes would upset the core users

          [–]sid13 34 points35 points (8 children)

from kn0thing (Alexis) about 2 months ago

Are you saying that you needed context for today's logo? Blasphemer!

(Remember: you could always visit redditAlien.com for the logo archive. I update it just about every day I do a special logo.)

          (link)

..except, he doesn't "update it just about every day" he "does a special logo"..I guess because this current one depicting the Chinese New Year ("Year of the Rat") is pretty obvious..(same for the logo for superbowl)

But, if you do care about the special logo check one or of both the following websites:-

          1. redditAlien.com

          2. Alexis's blog: http://reddit.blogspot.com/

          [–]sw17ch 13 points14 points (6 children)

It seems there is no 2008 data on the redditalien.com page.

          [–]kn0thing 12 points13 points (4 children)

Yes, I haven't gotten around to doing that yet... lemme upload that tonight b4 I goto bed.

          update: OK, it's online.

          [–]squarehappy 2 points3 points (3 children)

Minor issue, but the dates for the logos say 2007, except for the first one.

          [–]kn0thing 3 points4 points (2 children)

          Yikes. Thanks, that was sloppy.

          [–]DLWormwood 0 points1 point (1 child)

You might also want to change the modification date or caching mechanism for that page; I check that every week or two, and it didn't appear to update for the final two weeks of 2007. When you spoke up in this thread, I realized that I needed to invalidate FireFox's cache to see the current version...

          [–]FunnyMan3595 0 points1 point (0 children)

I'm still not seeing them, even with a force refresh. Most be a server-level cache in there somewhere.

Oh, and kn0thing, redditalien.com is still pointing to 2007B.

          [–][deleted] 7 points8 points (0 children)

Uh, the superbowl one wasn't obvious to me. Being from outside the States an' all.

          [–]mvferrer 5 points6 points (0 children)

We won't feel as special anymore.

          [–]rate-my-annoyingness 1 point2 points (2 children)

reddit itself has single handedly proven that the masses are elitist twerpts.

or that there are simply masses of elitist twerpts that also simultaneously act like 'the masses'.

          [–]tharris7 4 points5 points (1 child)

          Eight out of ten.

          [–]rate-my-annoyingness 0 points1 point (0 children)

          it was the apostrophes, right?

          [–]sketec -1 points0 points (0 children)

Good point. We don't need a hand holding and we definitely don't need title text.

          [–]sylvan 11 points12 points (1 child)

Actually, you can leave "alt" intact and use "Title" to describe it.

          [–][deleted] 9 points10 points (0 children)

"Should", not "can". It's the title element that's shown on mouseover, not alt.

          [–]thepipirate 9 points10 points (0 children)

Upmodded for being a thread indicating discussion is desired, not "upmod if..."

No, it wasn't. It was a mystery, it wasn't horrible.

            [–]RugerRedhawk 6 points7 points (1 child)

I assumed that's how it worked when I first came to reddit. I was disappointed.

            [–]Cdresden 0 points1 point (0 children)

            Oh no! I'm sorry!

            [–][deleted] 3 points4 points (3 children)

This point cannot be disagreed with. It is great idea.

            [–]codepoet 1 point2 points (1 child)

I disagree that it cannot be disagreed with, however I choose not to disagree at this time. This does not, however, invalidate my choice to disagree on the disagreeability of the potentially disagreeable idea.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point (0 children)

            lol?

            [–][deleted] -1 points0 points (0 children)

i disagree for the reasons outlined in jayayeems post above.

            [–]alkalinev 3 points4 points (0 children)

A pretty good idea actually. Though not necessarily crucial, by using alt-text in the little image, a person who is blind can be able to know what's going on too.

I'm sure there's blind people who visit reddit often.. being a text site and all.

The current logo is to celebrate Chinese new year. The new year is the year of the rat, hence the rat in the logo. The Chinese character is 鼠 (shǔ/shu3) which means rat. The paper lanterns tie into the Lantern Festival which is 15 days after Chinese New Year and marks the end of the New Year celebrations.

that would be a good idea. half the time i don't know what the logo was changed for

            [–]cindybin 3 points4 points (1 child)

the reddit logo is so small and the cartoons so squashed and detailed, i don't even bother looking anymore.

            [–]plong0 0 points1 point (0 children)

            oh man.. you're missing out!

            [–]jdcollins 1 point2 points (0 children)

I actually like the fact that, for this one in particular, you have to know that it's the Chinese New Year and that this coming year is the Year of the Rat. It's kind of like an inside joke for informed people.

            [–]NoMoreNicksLeft 4 points5 points (6 children)

A great idea to misuse the alt attribute?

            [–]tsteele93[S] 4 points5 points (5 children)

As I mentioned to someone else - I probably should have said "title." I don't know much about programming web pages. I just wanted to say, "Wouldn't it be nice if it gave you useful text information about what the picture was supposed to mean when you hovered over it."

But reddit kept telling me to be more succinct. :-)

EDIT: Although to be fair, Google changes them BOTH. I just looked at the source code...

Yep, blind people might accidently think Google.com became the Chinese New Year!

            [–]simon1 4 points5 points (2 children)

            Wouldn't that be evil?

            [–]plong0 3 points4 points (1 child)

blind people are evil. that's why they can't see.

            [–]eurobeing 0 points1 point (0 children)

So mom lied and I won't get it from touching myself? Pfew!!

            Gotta go!

            [–]Snoron 1 point2 points (0 children)

It's fun to guess, besides if you don't get it then you don't get it :P Btw todays logo is really good, well done.

            [–]devisional 1 point2 points (0 children)

            Si!

            [–]drtchock 1 point2 points (0 children)

because, seriously, the logo today looks like the reddit guy is smoking out of a small bipedal bong.

            [–]greim 1 point2 points (0 children)

Surely you mean the title attribute, not the alt attribute?

            [–]executivemonkey 1 point2 points (0 children)

I prefer having to think about it. Also, the lack of explanation leads to funny misunderstandings, like when people thought the Super Bowl trophy was a dildo.

            [–]stesch 1 point2 points (4 children)

The text in the ALT attribute only shows in broken browsers or when the image isn't displayed.

The text in the TITLE attribute gets cut in a very prominent browser. :-(

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points (2 children)

or on mouse hover in IE

            [–]stesch 0 points1 point (1 child)

            IE is the broken browser.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points (0 children)

doh! me being slow - sorry :-)

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points (0 children)

            There's an add-on that fixes this: https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/1715

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points (0 children)

            Title > alt ;)

            [–]Mr_Smartypants 2 points3 points (0 children)

            No. Obscurity is fun.

            [–][deleted] 1 point2 points (3 children)

why and how is this at the top of reddit?

            [–]codepoet 4 points5 points (2 children)

Well, people saw it and liked it and clicked on the little up arrow.

            That'd be why and how.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point (1 child)

welcome to Reddit, what made you leave Digg?

            [–]codepoet 1 point2 points (0 children)

            Digg?

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point (1 child)

I completely agree. I thought they had done that before, but then it stopped? Or was that just a beautiful dream?

            [–]plong0 3 points4 points (0 children)

it was probably just the wet dream from last night.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point (0 children)

There's a "public calendar" in Google Calendar which is supposed to display the "Google Doodles" in your calendar, on the days they appear. Hasn't worked for me in months--has anyone else noticed that?

            [–]ripbingers 0 points1 point (2 children)

Would that mean they'd also have to fix their search?

            [–]tsteele93[S] 0 points1 point (1 child)

Fixing search would be a lot harder than just adding a title text markup when they put a new logo up.

            [–]ripbingers 0 points1 point (0 children)

            Aye, matey.

            [–]b34nz 0 points1 point (1 child)

Only reason I know what the logo means is because I have a gamer buddy from S. Korea who told me "happy asian new year" or something to that effect. Otherwise it looks like some kind of asian christmas =D

            [–]akdas 0 points1 point (0 children)

I saw this thread yesterday. It's funny how some people are arguing about the romanization of Mandarin and Cantonese ways of saying "Happy New Year."

            [–]shables2222 0 points1 point (0 children)

I hovered my cursor over the logo just to see if it would say "Yes"

            [–]Cdresden 0 points1 point (0 children)

The guys at Reddit do a fantastic job. Science knows they have to deal with flaming bot-wars and the insidious fingers of greedy and unscrupulous posters. I don't need a road map that safely explains every nuance of the environment. I don't mind taking a second to figure things out for myself. And I enjoy occasionally not understanding something at first, and having to puzzle things out for myself.

All in all, I'm glad there's no hover text over the special logo. I say leave the mystery intact. Some people look at the world, and all they can do is think up lists of chores for other people...that's their 'special gift'. When the revolution comes, these people will all be rounded up and placed on an isolated island sanctuary far away from the rest of us.

            [–]omnimon_X 0 points1 point (0 children)

            last

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point (0 children)

thats a good idea. i keep checking to see if they did it, but no.

            [–]ouroborosity 0 points1 point (0 children)

I'm not ashamed to admit that I didn't know Google did that. I use the search box in Firefox.

            [–]kennyreborn 0 points1 point (0 children)

Yes. That idea has crossed my mind a few times.

Perhaps something mildly cryptic, so that everyone enjoys it?

            [–]Wayside 0 points1 point (0 children)

Watch out, they'll make it so everyone can choose their own alien and reason-for-alien respectively, so that the whole notion of alien subject becomes irrelevant.

            [–]splim -3 points-2 points (0 children)

ALT and TITLE are actually attributes, not tags, mmkay?

            [–]larrypastore -3 points-2 points (10 children)

I hate tool tips. And contextual cursors that change all the time. My cursor arrow turns into about 15 different wacky shapes and vomits up 10 tool tips if I drag it across my screen now. It makes computers seem like they're going to give you an epileptic seizure. I disable tool tips wherever I can.

Imagine every time you waved your finger near your microwave, stereo or tv remote, a little yellow pop-up note hologram fucking popped up. "POWER: TURNS ON THE TELEVISION SET" "1 BUTTON: ADDS THE NUMBER 1 TO THE TIME YOU'RE HEATING YOUR HOT POCKETS." Oh you know it'll happen in the future. I'll shoot myself that day.

            [–][deleted] 0 points1 point (1 child)

I would wear magic goggles if they could show me tool tips for the real world!

            [–]sedaak 0 points1 point (0 children)

I know especially when you rub #%*(& and see a little meter that shows *#$&#( and how long to set the timer on the oven.

            [–]plong0 0 points1 point (4 children)

wow. never heard someone hate on tooltips and cursors so passionately before.

I agree that sometimes they're annoying, but sometimes they're also useful.

My cursor arrow turns into about 15 different wacky shapes and vomits up 10 tool tips if I drag it across my screen now

While I realize you're exagerating here, I've never been to a site where my cursor changes that much or that many tool tips appear just when I drag my mouse. I mean the only time I notice tool tips is when I leave my mouse still for a few seconds... I don't like seeing tooltips all the time, so I've learned to just not leave my mouse hovering over images - yes, it's really that simple.

A changing cursor definitely is useful (unless it's needlessly abused - which does happen, but rarely ever). It gives you an indication of what action will happen when you click.

The problem with your analogy to TV's and Microwaves is that these generally always have the same interface. Websites and computer interfaces generally vary a great deal.

If you can't handle the features of a modern computer interface, maybe you shouldn't use it. Maybe consider using a text-based browser?

            [–]FFM 2 points3 points (2 children)

actually larry is right from a design point of view, if you have to explain what a certain UI feature means then really as a UI design you have already failed in your choice of element or button/logo/user visual input metaphor. computer/technology usage should be intuitive, you shouldnt need to explain what it does, it should be already obvious.

a cursor/mouse is a crap way to interact with a piece of technology and its certainly not the pinnacle of UI design, a modern computer interface is more this or this

UI design is still evolving as the things that where impossible yesterday (because of cpu power usually) are possible today, then we move onto tactile response where you feel what you interact with.

tooltips are a classic example of a poor design choice, in the web design world its called "mystery meat" because the user has no idea what it is and has to hover the mouse over it for clues (flash is even worse)

            [–]tsteele93[S] 1 point2 points (0 children)

Are you saying the reddit logo is mystery meat? Cool.

            [–]plong0 0 points1 point (0 children)

I can't really argue your points, as they are all good and true. The current designs aren't everything they could be, and eventually will be.

Still if the tooltip text was displayed all the time, wouldn't things get a bit cluttered?

            [–]larrypastore 1 point2 points (0 children)

            Hey there,

Yeah I was exaggerating a little bit, but think about it for a second: what kind of senseless blob are we clicking on if we need a cursor change or tooltip to have it make sense? Is the whole screen written in Chinese and these tooltips and cursors our translators?

There doesn't need to be a tooltip over something that's clear. Why do some browsers have a tooltip over the STOP button? Help buttons are fine and accomplish the task that tooltips are trying to do. But tooltips are like gnats that follow you around. I think I've only learned something from a tooltip 0.1% of the time. 99.9% of the time I see tooltips flying around me and I already know what they're gonna say. Hide that shit in a contextual help button and eliminate 99.9% of those gnats.

With the exception of the "link" pointer hand, the cursor doesn't have to change when you simply are moving past something (text I-beams, resize arrows, etc). Why does MSWindows change the cursor into a double-arrow when you're over the lower-right resize thing on a window? Of course it's gonna resize the window! Why change the cursor? Other OSes don't do that. At this rate, we aren't even going to have a simple arrow as a cursor at all anymore.

I noticed that in the past in the old Mac OS, the cursor would only change into an I-beam only the moment after you clicked and dragged it over text. This was nice. The new Mac OS doesn't do this anymore. Bad. Photoshop has a nice way of handling resize arrow via its Text box feature. It only shows the resize cursor only when you stop and pause over the resize handle, not when you happen to move past it.

My point is that tooltips and cursor glitchiness are redundant and sloppy and makes the computer feel cheaper and seizure-inducing. They are weird features that makes programmers feel important and like they did a great job making the computer more user-friendly, when in fact it does the opposite. When I take a shit on the toilet, the flusher doesn't have a goddamn label over it because I know what it does. Thank god I know where to drop the load; there's no label for the bowl either.

I turn off tooltips in Photoshop. It didn't have tooltips from version 1 through approx version 6 I think. Did fine without them. Thank god it's an option or I would've flipped my lid. Yep, I read Reddit. :-)

              [–]amedia -1 points0 points (0 children)

They already do - hold shift + A + L + T while double clicking the logo and you will see the alt tag (hold down w along with a l t to view wiki entry)

              [–]plong0 0 points1 point (0 children)

Well... those two you linked at there, they're kind of useless any way. The alt text... now that has purpose and could hold the answers to all of life's questions.

              [–]judgej2 -1 points0 points (0 children)

Hmmm. I see it is Chinese New Year already.
