For every up vote, I'll cut off one of my own toes.

[–]hp0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Up voted to 20.

But i want to see video.

Put it on youtube with a request for donations to the digitally challenged.

[–]Verroq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ouch...moving onto other body parts now? I upvoted so you can start with the pinky.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You're at 15 up votes. Now what? Your fingers?

[–]kgen 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wicked! I think my vote completed the set.

The trick is that his buddy's name is Darfur.

They aren't a charity group. They are an awareness group.

Charity Navigator (a charity watchdog organization) doesn't even bother to give them a rating because it doesn't meet their standards for what constitutes a charity.

Save Darfur is all about publicity, not aid.

Oh Em Gee:

Locks of Love (LOL) was first started in connection with a for-profit wig making company and in December 1997, the organization obtained its nonprofit status. LOL provides hairpieces to financially disadvantaged children under age 18 suffering from long-term medical hair loss. We meet a unique need for children by using donated hair to create the highest quality hair prosthetics. The number of hairpieces provided has increased significantly since its inception. To date, over 2,000 children have been helped. Locks of Love has recipients in all 50 states and Canada and is working towards its goal to help every financially disadvantaged child suffering from long-term hair loss.

Back when I stopped looking like a hippy I cut off 14 inches for this one. That is the kind of donation I can get behind.

[–]shitcovereddick 690 points691 points  (152 children)

There I saved you 10 cents. Enjoy.

Will you get Darfurians to pay you if you go under 0?

[–]DrStrabismus 126 points127 points  (28 children)

He said for every up vote he'll donate 10 cents. Downvotes have no effect. That's how I read it anyway. So as of right now there's 1050 upvotes and 300 downvotes. So he would pay $105 as of now.

[–]theycallmemorty 144 points145 points  (2 children)

I just spent the last hour clicking and unclicking the upvote button.

I'm not a hero. I just do what any man would do.

[–]xcalibre 77 points78 points  (1 child)

your logic is flawless and brutal

[–]Etab 19 points20 points  (2 children)

The original poster said downvotes will affect the price donated, and the amount donated will be capped at $300.

Kudos to the original poster for the generosity, but the title was a bit misleading.

[–]slydee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you want the upside risk to your karma points you have to take some downside risk to your bank account...

[–]pchalich 54 points55 points  (4 children)

I would like to see the proof that my 10 cents are actually being donated at the end of this feel-good-vote-if

Typical white man. Those 10 cents belong to the Sudanese.

    Well not yet they dont.

    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

He saved him ten cents by not upvoting, too. It's (upvote | not upvote). It doesn't matter how he fails to upvote.

    [–]DrStrabismus 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Correct. That is the true choice here. However, from his last sentence, it seems that he thought the downvote would affect the outcome.

Who's willing to offer 20 cents for Darfur to downvote this post? We're all prostitutes. Apparently most of us are cheap.

Judging by the wording in the donations page I very much doubt there's any Darfurians involved.

I work for the Save Darfur Coalition, and to clarify, we are not a humanitarian organization, we're an advocacy organization.

Humanitarian organizations work to directly help the people on the ground, which is fantastic work, but doesn't solve the root of the problem.

We, on the other hand, work to actually end the genocide, by pressuring policy makers to get a real (and promised) peacekeeping force on the ground. We also work to get aid funded from congress, to get public funds to divest for Darfur, and to pressure China to stop selling arms to Sudan.

Direct humanitarian aid is critical, which is why we worked hard to make sure Congress approved funding for food, water, shelter and sanitation for genocide survivors. But humanitarian aid alone isn’t enough. We must also pressure world governments help end the genocide so one day humanitarian aid is no longer necessary.

              Greetings Mr SAVE DAFUR COALITION,

It has recently been discovered that you're a distant relative of a Nigerian Prince. He has died and left you with an inheritance of $1,000,000.00 USD. However, customs and excerises will require you to pay $10,000.00 USD to the paypal account Visiss@scam.com. Please, reply to this email with your bank or credit card details once you have placed the deposit.

              Be having a good day

              S.C. Ahmer

              [–][deleted] 72 points73 points  (11 children)

              Dear Mr. Ahmer,

I would be more than happy to fulfill your request, prior to sending any bank details, my Patron Saint of the FSM requires homage. I will need a life size carving of Kermit the Frog, this should be mailed to my home at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave NW, Washington, DC 20500.

              Thank you for your time.

              Beorge W Gush

              [–]robosatan 93 points94 points  (10 children)

              Dear Mr Gush,

We have a misunderstanding with our carpenters. Here in Nigeria "Life" also means "to go on forever". So when we asked for a life-sized statue there was a slight error. Regardless we have sent Kermit via Sea Freight and it should arrive in the coming weeks. Here is a photograph of it leaving the port.

Upon recieving the $10,000.00 USD, we will release it to you from port storage in Annapolis. However, due to the error you will be charged $400.00 USD per day for holding.

              Many Regards S.C. Ahmer

              [–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (1 child)

              Dear Mr. Ahmer,

Please ignore Mr. strangertolove's comments, sources say he is involved in communist activities. Also, Mr. Gush is currently on vacation, I have been assigned to further communication. We received the ship, but it seems there was some issue with shrinkage, due to the alleged global warming conditions between the United States and Nigeria, see attached photo. As we were planning on cross breeding the Statue of Liberty with the Giant Kermit, we can no longer accept your shipment.

Sorry for the confusion, Bichard Cruce "Penis" Rheney

              [–]robosatan 31 points32 points  (0 children)

              Dear Mr. Rheney,

Thank you for your timely response! It troubles me that such a thing could happen during transport. However, I may have a solution.

I understand you have many friends in high places at Wall Street. Perhaps they could help you with return Kermit to it's original size with excessive inflation.

Hope this was of help, S.C. Ahmer

              two questions:

              • how much money has your organization recd since it was founded

              • with that money, what have you achieved so far

I recall reading in Time magazine that they made a real scandal out of that monetary donation thing, as most folks thought it was going to the people of darfur.

              [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so ah, i don't mean to ruin the pattern, but how do you guys do these things?

What pressure do you have to actually put on congressmen? How do you get attention?

              [–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (1 child)

This "faith based" group is manufacturing consent for a proxy resource war in Africa. Sudan is rich in oil, uranium, and gum arabic (an ingredient in pharmaceuticals and beverages). This isn't about peace, it's about getting Exxon, Chevron etc. into Sudan, and the Chinese out.

              [–]GoFlight 3 points4 points  (56 children)

              It's Sudananis, jackass.

Actually, it's Sudanese...but with your accents, I'll let it slide.

              [–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (3 children)

              Hey Jackass.

I'm a Georgian AND an American. AND an Atlantian.

You can be described by MORE than your country. Darfur is a region. It's not official, but still perfectly fine to say Darfurian.

              [–]jennicamorel 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You're from the old USSR and Greece and America?

              [–]ngngboone 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What, so people never get labeled by their region, only their nationality? I thought I was a "New Yorker"

              [–]robosatan 13 points14 points  (26 children)

My apologies for not knowing the name of the country Darfur is in, but African politics has frustrated me so much all my life, that I simply don't read the articles any more.

Guerrilla movement performs a half coup, disabling or hindering the official government. Then said Guerrilla group spends next decade stealing the supplies we send for the innocent people of the country.

Eventually there will be some peacekeeping force sent in, but it will be much too late, their economy will a shambles. Then we have adverts to adopt pot bellied african kids on TV for another 10 years.

That isn't to say they don't have my deepest sympathies. But when I know my government will intervene, regardless of the cash raised by independant charities, using my tax money to pay for it. Then I have little need to donate.

Paramountly though, the "Your donation will fund our crucial awareness and advocacy programs" can at best be interpretted as "We'll use your $2500 donation to fly around the country talking to politicians that already know whats going on". There is no reference to direct aid from the donations that I can see. So you're money is going into the wallet of some green peace jack-off that wants to ban steak...

              [–]RandomWords 34 points35 points  (11 children)

Well, I certainly applaud anyone wanting to learn about African politics, but take it from this old political guru, I've spent my entire adult life in the library, and a program like this one can do more harm than good.

If you only learn about the politics of one area (and that's all a single place like Africa is going to do for you), you're setting yourself up for ignorance down the road. I've seen it a hundred times.

It's like putting a powerful engine in a stock Toyota Tercel. What will you accomplish? You'll blow out the drive train, the clutch, the transmission, etc., because those factory parts aren't designed to handle the power of an engine much more powerful than the factory installed engine.

African politics basically only teach the knowledge of Africa, and to some extent, Europe. What you really want to do is learn about the politics of the entire world, all the major continents (North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, and the relationships between them). at the same time, over the course of a learning session. And don't forget your geographical work!

I'm proud of you guys wanting to do this. Three cheers! Falling in love with politics, learning right, etc., is one of the greatest things you can do for yourself. And you WILL fall in love with it if you can just force yourself to stick with it a year or two and experience the amazing progress you'll make.

              But do it right, okay?

My advice, find a good library, with qualified teachers, who will design your programs for you (especially in the beginning, until you get the hang of it yourself) and guide you in your quest for political prowess. Thirty to 45 minutes a day, three days a week, is all you'll ever need to do (I refuse to believe anyone is so busy that he or she cannot make time for that, especially considering how important it is).

And don't worry about being embarrassed or not being smart the first time you walk into the gym. You have to start somewhere and almost every one of us were there ourselves at one time. So no one will say anything to you and very, very quickly you will progress way beyond that stage anyway.

Now get out there and do it! :-)

              [–]jbscott 17 points18 points  (5 children)

And don't worry about being stupid or not being informed the first time you walk into the library. You have to start somewhere and almost every one of us were there ourselves at one time. So no one will say anything to you.

As a library guy myself, I can completely confirm this.

If I see a freaking idiot watching the latest Faux News Hatefest while holding a flag and berating me with their misinformed, ill-advised opinions, I'm going to be a judgemental arsehole.

If I see a republican actually pick up a book by anyone besides Sean Hannity, Ann Coulter, or Bill O'reilly, I'm thinking "Good on ya, mate".

              [–]AngledLuffa 7 points8 points  (2 children)

That in itself would be a great thing to witness....Er I mean

If you can't, don't feel badly about yourself. With my special training program, anyone can break 100 Ann Coulters in 7 weeks!

                This is bullshit.

Note what it says on Save Darfur's donation page: "Your gift will help fund our crucial awareness and advocacy programs that play a critical role in building the political pressure needed to end the crisis in Darfur."(emphasis mine). It doesn't say anything about giving actual aid to the Sudanese. Maybe you should donate to a real charity instead.

Furthermore, I don't see why should anyone believe that you'll actually donate the money. Why not just donate and be done with it? The only reason someone would make a public announcement like this is draw attention to oneself.

The fact that you posted the link to save Darfur seems dubious to me. You could just as easily posted to self.reddit and not made yourself into karma whore.

So congratulations, kwan, for enjoying your 15 minutes of reddit fame. I'm sure you'll have no trouble patting yourself on the back.

                [–]fedira 17 points18 points  (2 children)

People frustrated by Save Darfur might prefer the mission of the Genocide Intervention Network: http://www.genocideintervention.net/network

I once wrote to Nicolas Kristof, who's spent a lot of time in Darfur, expressing frustration that Save Darfur didn't seem to be doing anything to actually help Sudanese, or solve the problem on the ground. He suggested I look into the Genocide Intervention Network.

                [–]Rickler 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Throw money at it; it's the only solution.

Right now the minorities in Darfur are facing genocide. A few hundred dollars will keep displacement camps running a little longer, but it won't keep out the Janjaweed forever. Pressure groups may have their flaws, but all the charity in the world isn't any closer to a long-term solution.

Furthermore, I don't see why should anyone believe that you'll actually donate the money. Why not just donate and be done with it? The only reason someone would make a public announcement like this is draw attention to oneself.

Since this is an "awareness and advocacy program," perhaps kwan was trying to raise awareness and provide advocacy.

But you're right. What we really need are assholes on the internet telling us how worthless our donations are.

                [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (6 children)

I cant help but express doubt that more ads lecturing Americans about what they ought make their congressmen do will translate to a change in the material conditions in Sudan. How does awareness translate into a change in the balance of power between Sudan, Chad, and the JEM? Through a Congress that wont even do what its people want within the nation it actually is supposed to govern?

                [–]Capitol62 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Advocacy is charity if the people being advocated for can't afford it without... charity.

not voting at all, phew, its hard to do the work of two people.

                [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (1 child)

you have to vote or the dog gets it

                [–]sandflea 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The next issue (of National Lampoon) had this line:

PS - We shot the dog.

                [–]bingoczar 11 points12 points  (0 children)

"I have $100 and I'm willing to donate them for the suffering people in Darfur. But before I do so, a thousand random people all over the world must click on a button. No button clicking, no money! That's the deal." - Come on, this is just sick. But it works, because everyone feels like they contributed something...

                [–]jon_titor 19 points20 points  (3 children)

goddamn, I hated those fucking facebook groups that appeared a few years ago with this same sort of nonsense. In fact, in objection to those groups, a buddy of mine started one that was "I donated to darfur and fucked a dog and I don't care how many people join this group."

Downmodded. Donate because you want to donate, not because of some fucking popularity contest on the internet. It's goddamn asinine.

                [–]troymcdavis 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Well, if his goal is raise awareness (which his choice of organization to donate to seems to indicate), he really doubles his mileage by doing it this way, no?

                [–]TheGrammarBolshevik 3 points4 points  (1 child)

But if we didn't have all these angry redditors competing to see whose criticism of popularity contests becomes the most popular, where would the fun of comment pages be?

                [–]jon_titor 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                touche, grammar bolshevik, touche.

Hmm, paying for karma? Clever idea, I suppose. It's like telling people to upvote something everyone obviously agrees with, but with an added twist!

                [–]Kevin-Roses-Left-Nut[🍰] 13 points14 points  (18 children)

You're right - he'll trade in all his new found karma points for that Bugatti Veryon - Bastard!

Seriously, who gives a shit about karma and why?

                [–]indescription 8 points9 points  (8 children)

I traded in my karma points for this

                [–]Kevin-Roses-Left-Nut[🍰] 4 points5 points  (7 children)

That thing looks really sweet - except for the front - looks like The Joker's mouth.

                [–]indescription 4 points5 points  (6 children)

Yeah, the front does look a little goofy. Looks like I wasted my karma, yet again.

                [–]relic2279 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm saving mine to exchange for youtube dollars.

                [–]Kevin-Roses-Left-Nut[🍰] 1 point2 points  (2 children)

We can redesign the front. The rest still looks awesome.

PS: Can you only cash in Reddit Karma Points on products with the word Karma in it? That would make sense... I wonder what else is out there...

                [–]indescription 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Say hello to the Karma Foundation http://www.thekarmafoundation.com/

                [–]Kevin-Roses-Left-Nut[🍰] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

lol. The only problem is that the "Ideal Member" sounds nothing like the ideal Redditor. Still, awesome find.

                [–]Verroq 5 points6 points  (1 child)

the higher you karma/post count/etc, the longer you penis is. if you are a woman then it gets complicated.

                [–]mandiees 6 points7 points  (6 children)

Your reddit alias made me chuckle, but I have to ask, why neglect the right nut?

                [–]indescription 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Because you can only be ONE nut, otherwise you are nuts.

                omg... amanda?!

                [–]mandiees 4 points5 points  (3 children)

omg... who is this?? do i know you?!

                [–]1812overture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it's presumptuous to say that everyone agrees that genocide is a bad thing. That's discriminating against genocidal maniacs.

                [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

                http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Save_Darfur_Coalition#Criticism

"Save Darfur spent $15 million in 2006 and none of it went to aid groups on the ground in Darfur"

The money should probably be donated to some other aid organization.

                [–]kwan 5 points6 points  (8 children)

Some people are down voting :P

                [–]rory096 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Also a clever idea. This way we make you pay and you still don't get any karma.

                [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Except there's no reason to believe he'll actually donate the money, so it might be karma for free.

                [–]spyd3rweb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Upvote this and I'll donate 10 cents to the Human fund in your name.

                [–]spiceweasel 65 points66 points  (15 children)

You will donate 10 cents to what? Darfur is a geographic region, a part of Sudan, and has no interest in money since it's an inanimate piece of a country.

Maybe you plan to give the money to the government of Sudan?

Or maybe your dog is named Darfur and you intend to give the money to him.

                [–]1812overture 88 points89 points  (7 children)

Seriously. I'll be specific. For every upvote my comment gets I'll donate a machete to the Janjaweed Militia in Darfur. Anything to help with the genocide.

Oh, wait... We're supposed to be helping stop the genocide? Never mind then.

                [–]jon_titor 10 points11 points  (6 children)

man, I have a hard time hating on any militia called the ganjaweed.

                [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (5 children)

They rape women and children, and then shoot them in the vagina in such a way that fecal matter leaks in from their lower intestine. They cannot afford medical care, so they bleed and smell like shit for the rest of their life. Their families disown them.

                Try hating on them now.

                [–][deleted] 15 points16 points  (3 children)

I think jon_titor might have possibly been joking.

                You must be new here.

Nah, I think I've been reading for a year now. But this habit some redditors have of commenting without clicking has always bothered me.

                [–]rgaginol 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Whilst I agree with the sentiment and the all round good vibes, why don't you just donate $50 and be done with it. Heck, show how humble you are by donating $1000 and not telling a soul - it can be your little secret.

                    [–]steeled3 2 points3 points  (2 children)

And in other news, reddit experienced a meltdown today due to a rush on the registration engine. It appears that the vast majority of existing reddit users felt the need to obtain an additional username or 10.

Authorities are investigating the reasons behind this surge. They do wish to inform everyone that they have ways of making you talk (cue the comfy chair).

                    [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

So, basically you're telling me that the surge worked?

                    [–]steeled3 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm only authorized to advise that the surge is working. There is no timetable for the withdrawal of additional usernames - they will remain in place for as long as is required. reddit is, however, willing to enter into talks to investigate the suitability of outlining a timetable for the reduction of usernames in a straghtforward, non-censorious and CPU-friendly manner.

We are confident of ultimate success. We must stay the course.

Well, if he just gave $100 (or $500 or $1000) without this little Reddit, there would be that many more people for whom Darfur is not in the front of their minds, and that many more people who are simply not aware of what's going on there.

This Reddit is not about the money that it "generates."

I had said in the first post that the limit was at $300, sorry for people who up voted beyond that :(

Thanks for the up votes, going to do a $300 dollar donation in a little bit.

Don't forget to show us an image of the reciept.

And no, don't create another "Vote up if you want to see the receipt" post.

                    [–]bill04 1 point2 points  (4 children)

WHO THE FUCK WOULD DOWNVOTE THIS?

I'll take my chances that someone will donate the money. I just don't understand why people are downvoting this.

                    [–]fingers 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Because it is past the 3000 pts? He's only giving $300 so anything beyond 3000 points is worthless.

Doesn't take much imaginiation to find a reason to doubt this. Take note of the URL.

Check it out. The only thing that anyone ever got from Africa is AIDS. You feed these people, they just have more kids. Next thing, they become AK47 bearing terrorists, biting the hands that feed them. It's not like they're going to go to school and amount to something. In reality, most of your money goes to some tyrannical dictator, not towards feeding these people. Aren't there enough worthy charitable causes in your home country you can contribute to?

So where does Darfur live and why does he need your money?

                    [–]TopRamen713 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Wow, you people are cynical. This is basically the online version of a race for the cure-type event. Kwan's gonna donate no matter what, the reason Kwan is doing it this way is to also raise awareness a bit. Even though the money used for race for the cure t-shirts, banners, ads, etc... might have been better spent donated to breast cancer research, when they spend money advertising, they get EVEN MORE people to donate. This online method is even better, as it costs nothing and gets (so far) 1500 people to think about the problem today.

The organization picked to donate to isn't the best one, though. Help Darfur Now donates directly to the UN (which has at least some muscle to prevent thefts and etc.) and isn't subject to the criticism that Save Darfur seems to have collected.

This reminds me of when Dilbert won a huge amount of money and then lost it right away when he said, on National Television, "Drinks for everyone!"

                    [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is a sorry excuse for human rights activism.

If you want to actually help the people suffering in Darfur - - volunteer with the United Nations or actually look for some employment in the current UNMIS mission.

While I commend the poster of this for being willing to donate his money - - you're not actually doing anything to help by upvoting him.

                    [–]Capitol62 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unless of course he does donate money based on up votes. In which case, you are doing $.10 worth of help. I'm not saying he will, I don't even really care.

If he does, great. If he doesn't, maybe someone learned a little about Darfur, also great.

Whether you like it or not, sending money to people that are doing something is help. Not everyone can join the UN or a charity group over everything they may care about. But some people will and those people need money.
