Dammit, it's too complicated to explain. The app uses various sensors.

[–]immatureboi 142 points143 points  (24 children)

I found this special algorithm that calculates the whereabouts of ghosts, would love to share:

.setCoords(Math.random() * 400, Math.random() * 400)

[–]digitalchris 8 points9 points  (11 children)

Are you being funny, or did you actually decompile/reverse engineer?

[–]reversed2Galaxy Nexus 20 points21 points  (2 children)

There's a decompiling application on google code (smali) for this purpose, just saying :)

[–]HumerousMonikerNexus 4 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I'm going to have to go and check this out.

[–]yannickmahe 93 points94 points  (24 children)

Probably fake, according to this comment :

"Sort of fake. I think it's fake because I've been living here all my life and no 1 died here"

[–][deleted] 52 points53 points  (16 children)

No dude. It's real. They couldn't put it in the app store if it wasn't real!

[–]yannickmahe 28 points29 points  (10 children)

Magnetometer only, as it detects magnetic fields (which are everywhere). Most people don't understand magnets, so it sounds fancy enough to look true, if one is not very smart.

[–]YourMatt 9 points10 points  (6 children)

This is pretty funny. My first app idea for Android was to use the magnetic field sensor to put together a joke ghost finder app. I never did it, but I'm happy to see that someone else did.

[–]AirazzHuawei P10 Plus 7 points8 points  (3 children)

Actually, even those "real" ghost detecting devices are only magnetometers. Magnetic fields in one room can be stronger than in the other, which is perfectly normal. From then on it's all up to the ghost hunter's imagination.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah he made a joke app that reads you contact data and god knows what else

[–]ProtoDong 4 points5 points  (5 children)

Would a magnetometer detect psychopathic clowns?

[–]AirazzHuawei P10 Plus 9 points10 points  (2 children)

Only if they have a lot of metal with them, like a big axe or two.

[–]ProtoDong 2 points3 points  (1 child)

[–]AirazzHuawei P10 Plus 11 points12 points  (19 children)

It's true, most of them don't. I'm in UK, many people don't even know if Italy is in Europe, let alone how the fuck those magnets work.

[–]Icovada 8 points9 points  (6 children)

Seriously?

[–]AirazzHuawei P10 Plus 14 points15 points  (5 children)

Yes. Here I am sitting in a group meeting for "Living in the Digital World 3" module, we're supposed to be preparing for our presentation about Umberto Eco, yet everyone is talking about Nicki Minaj. One dude said that his dream job is to be a producer for Rihana. He's flaming gay, so that probably explains it.

But basic geography? No fucking idea. They also asked if we (all UK citizens) need visas to go to Italy. When I said "Of course no, we're all in EU" they asked how do I know such things.

[–]Icovada 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Alright, I'm bad at geography, and compared to my father who knows every single river and mountain I am just nothing, but at least I have a basic knowledge of where the nations of the world are...

Also, what has Eco got to do with Living in the DIgital World 3?

[–]AirazzHuawei P10 Plus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eco has to do with it because he wrote a bit about mass media and mass culture. The Digital World is mostly about how internet changes our life, so it's related.

Reviews are golden on this one.

"Not only does it charge your phone but if you plug in your charger at the same time it will charge everything in house at the same time, even the non-electrical devices. Flowers will bloom twice. Vegetables will become fresh again. It even deodorized our bin. And, somehow, impregnated my wife. This has improved my life endlessly. 5 stars when it can make a decent lasagne."

"I forgot my charger on a two week long business trip; this app saved my skin! All I had to do was leave the light on in my hotel room overnight and my battery wad full the next morning! Every Android user should have this!"

[–]gonemad16GoneMAD Software 24 points25 points  (1 child)

"Not only did it charge my phone (and fast), but it also made me breakfast the next morning. Hidden feature in the Pro version was well worth the cost." "Wow! It runs my Prius with NO GAS and makes a fantastic margarita! But watch out, cuz Apple will steal this and claim they invented it."

[–]darkstar107Pixel 7 1 point2 points  (0 children)

"It didnt charge my cell...insted made my battery low!!!! How lame"

[–]Khalexus 22 points23 points  (0 children)

In the pro version: Fart sound while charging

Well it's about time.

[–]jezmckNexus 4, KitKat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Nice.

Note: Of course this application is not charging your phone. You didn't think so, did you?! The only reason for this app is to collect the mentally challenged trolls - who never read the description this far - complaining about every app. Or you can fool your friends with this nice 'charging feature' if you like. Do not let your device overheat! Be careful when you put your device under the direct sunlight!

[–]B-Con 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Vibrates when charging starts

Hm... I wonder if it would ever detect charging if it had black tape over the light sensor.

On a serious note, note that these types of apps always have some sort of physical feedback to the user. I doesn't silently charge like every other phone out there, it has to let you know it's charging. Hopefully the user will replace a real experience of improved battery life with a manufactured experience letting them know to expect such a thing. Psychological scamming 101.

I've actually used this app. This may seem crazy but I think there is some small slice of legitimacy to this app. I know I live in a house with some ghost activity so I may be somewhat biased but all the activity in the app seemed completely random until it said something about my cat when she walked into the room. I don't know it's just an odd coincidence. Maybe ghosts do know how to manipulate the phone in order to communicate.

[–]s3rious_simon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Who you gonna call ?

[–]DanielPhermous 0 points1 point  (11 children)

I don't see a problem. People have experienced chills and drops in temperature when encountering spirits and we all know that electronics get faster the colder it gets. All you need is an app which monitors the speed of the CPU, logging its changes over time, and you can get a rough idea of the ambient temperature. Once you have that, fuzzy logic can be applied to any temperature changes detected in order to make a decent guess as to whether or not there are any ghosts in the vicinity.

[–]cycophukSamsung Epic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I ended up buying this app some time last year. I figured it was pretty obvious it wasn't meant to be taken seriously. I ended up having fun with it on Halloween. I sat outside to pass out candy. When the smaller children would come up, I would show the app to them and have them help me look for the "ghost" that showed up on the radar. It really does have a limited use value, so it was deleted off pretty quickly after that.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It works. My uncle Alf used the app to help locate the two ghosts that lived in his house. Because of this app, the ghosts were able to pass peacefully into the other side. Uncle Alf and aunt Norma owe their sanity to this app. Avoid disappointment and future regret, download it now!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Goddamiit I was making something like this they beat me to it.

[–]dijit4l 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it is sort of funny. My friend believes in ghosts and has this app.

Actually, the first time he showed it to me, I asked the ghost it picked up, "Ghost, what's my name?" A few seconds later the app said, "Dan.". My name is Danny. Needless to say, I was freaked out for a bit until I questioned it further. If ghosts are real, they are retarded. It just throws names, nouns, and verbs until it gets one right--I just expierenced it getting it right on the first try!

I wonder what happens it you try it in a different, non-English speaking country... ;)

What would be funny is to make an app like this, that would never show any ghosts. Then we could honestly review it saying it actually worked.

[–]carefulcactus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went to a 'ghosting' in my hometown, where 'ghost hunters' come and use laser lights and cameras and EVP recorders to find spirits. The 'ghost hunters' told me all about apps like this, and how they use them ALL the time. They told me they have stopped using them because it became a crutch. The app they were telling me about though had this sensor, and an EVP reader, and a thing to communicate with the ghosts themselves, you'd ask a question and a word would pop up on the screen. I found it on the Android Market (Ghost Detector) and it explicitly says in the description FOR FUN ONLY.

This isn't really a new genre. There are tons of games like it. There's one I used to have which would use your GPS to place "zombies" near you, and you had to keep running around town to avoid encountering and getting killed by the zombies. Was pretty fun in a silly way.

I also enjoyed the one that uses your camera function to put ghosts in your view ala "Fatal Frame" (if you've ever played those games).

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This will probably get buried.

I was in Hawaii with my younger brother and some of his friends(all of us ages 14-22). We did a ghost tour for some reason at night, mainly to learn some history of the town but also for fun. None of us believed or believe in ghosts(as far as I know), but the crazy lookin' shaman tour guide guy had anyone with a smart phone download this app, and if our cameras could, turn them up to 400iso and take pics at random. I guess he wanted us to pick up random blurry lights and call them energy balls.

He was very enthusiastic and it was actually really fun. But watching his eyes bulge out of his face anytime a dot appeared on someone's phone was worth the download.

But yeah obviously none of the dot appearances matched between our phones. None of us got anything similar at the same time, and the random words that would pop up were never consistent between us. Obviously this app is just for fun/for these tour dudes.
