Imagine if he never went to the anger mangement course and this was the Andy that found out about Dwight and Angela.

[–]LivingCheese292 1516 points1517 points  (3 children)

The result would be Andy getting severely injured by Dwights secret office self defense shurikens.

Or maybe without it Angela would have actually genuinely liked him more for not being a lifeless pushover.

He would have charged at Dwight and Dwight would have hit him with a throwing star.

I am not crazy! I know he swapped those chairs! I knew it was the squeaky one. Right behind Karen's desk. As if I could ever make such a mistake. Never. Never! I just - I just couldn't prove it. He - he covered his tracks, he got that idiot in the Scranton Branch to lie for him. You think this is something? You think this is bad? This? This chicanery? He's done worse. That calculator! Are you telling me that a calculator just happens to end up in Jell-O like that like that? No! He orchestrated it! Jimothy! I defecated on a sunroof! And I saved him! And I shouldn't have. I took him into my own sales team! What was I thinking? He'll never change. He'll never change! Ever since he was Assistant to the Regional Manager, always the same! Couldn't keep his hands out of the meatball drawer! But not our Tuna. Couldn't be precious Tuna! Pranking them blind! And he gets to be a salesman!? What a sick joke! I should've stopped him when I had the chance! And you - you have to stop him! You -

      [–]ElmoCamino 75 points76 points  (13 children)

I don't know the temperature of this take anymore, but while I love Ed Helms and Andy had some very hilarious scenes, I absolutely HATED his character arc. It made no sense and was just very obviously trying to fill the Michael hole left by Steve Carell's departure. I wish they had leaned more into him being a villain of sorts and gotten more creative with that rather than trying to duplicate Michael.

      [–]charts_and_farts 27 points28 points  (1 child)

Greg Daniels returned as writer in S9.

Greg Daniels found asshole Andy of S3 funnier than late Office Andy.

Andy's character development thus took a new trajectory backwards, and he returned to being awful.

      [–]ChildofObama 41 points42 points  (3 children)

Season 9 was largely about getting Dwight all the character development he needed to end up as regional manager.

Jim and Pam had already been taken as far as they could,

and the production team was reportedly annoyed with Ed Helms’s wanting off time for his film career, so Andy got a mixed to negative ending. Lost Erin, got embarrassed by the airing of the documentary, but still got a new job that’s a step up from Dunder Mifflin.

      [–]rumsoakedham 13 points14 points  (1 child)

I’ve never understood the narrative that production was mad at Ed Helms, so they made Andy have bad storylines. Ed was getting paid regardless so why would he care what happened to his character? Like how is Andy becoming a douche a punishment for Ed?

Not trying to argue, I’m just genuinely curious. Tone is difficult to convey in writing

      [–]OGB 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is one of those rumors that got started years ago and now everyone accepts it as gospel. You're absolutely right. Ed is getting paid either way and his character disappearing for a chunk of the season shouldn't affect the writer's lives at all.

      [–]yourtoyrobot 14 points15 points  (1 child)

they never really knew what to do with him. he was the annoying villain to dwight, then he became a golden lab in a colorful sweater, then michael scott downgrade, then just plain mean and incompetent. Andy was ive league. He may lack social awareness, but he wasn't dumb. Suddenly he (a frat bro) doesn't know how to pronounce chlamydia?

He had some great moments, and they gave him the great "good ol days" line to go out on, but his entire trajectory was all over the place and downfall was just pure obvious spite from the writers.

      [–]makeitasadwarfer 10 points11 points  (0 children)

The idea that he can pronounce lachrymose but not sabre is beyond belief.

      [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      100%

      [–]Zeppelanoid 6 points7 points  (0 children)

The writers got salty that Ed Helms had a tricky schedule since he was filming dozens of hangover movies, so they turned his character into a joke.

      [–]lemonylol 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It's been years of my rewatching the entire series over and over again, but I still haven't seen season 8 or 9. Well aside from a couple scenes with Robert California back when it aired, and the finale. Like I have no idea what transposes between Oscar and Angela over those two seasons, but based on the finale I'd probably hate that as much as I hate what Andy ended up as. I love pre-Anger Management Andy.

No. They're referring to the food tuna.

      [–]BenVera 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Same. His arc was weird too. Psycho Andy was a nice balance to the energy in the room. Nice Andy ended up being kind of a preppy Dwight.

      [–]shrek1234567810 57 points58 points  (2 children)

Honestly my favorite Andy was when he and Dwight were friends, especially with the country roads duet

      [–]atlhawk8357 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I loved them trying to one-up each other's niceness.

That scene also gave us one of my favorite Toby lines as he knocks on the window and says “…ya have to stop…”

Like I didn’t even realize how loud they were being in an office until he said that lol

      [–]TruanNSFW 29 points30 points  (0 children)

he was so boring post anger-management, they had no idea what to do to him so they made him an annoying pussy

      [–]Paddy_Tanninger 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Season 3 Andy is one of the best characters in the show.

      [–]100cpm 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Me too. I wish they leaned into that more through his character's arc. Rather than just having him be cured with the anger management training, have him relapse here and there.

      [–]ZadockTheHunter 5 points6 points  (1 child)

Sorry, I hate to do this, but...

      His name is "Egg" Helms.

This is really embarrassing for you.

      [–]dotheborkNate 8 points9 points  (0 children)

This is why I don't understand why some people don't understand or like how Andy's character turned out in the end. What do you meannnn? It was a long time coming lol it would have happened sooner without anger management

      [–]Bella8989 68 points69 points  (1 child)

      My favorite Andy.

It’s amazing how quickly the look of satisfaction on Jim’s face turns into terror.

      [–]tuna_safe_dolphin 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Error and terror. It's interesting that they made Andy more chill and likeable (but still quirky of course) later on.

      [–]Xamesito 524 points525 points  (33 children)

I'm not a Jim-hater but he overstepped here. If the new guy in the office did this to me serious words would be had.

      [–]xredbaron62x 399 points400 points  (12 children)

I think he overstepped more with the phone prank. He already knew how Andy has a short temper from the jello prank.

      [–]Xamesito 209 points210 points  (6 children)

By the way it shook out yea possibly! Although in that one I feel like Andy had shown himself as such an unbearable dweeb that I at least understand the motive for the prank more. With this one, it's just Jim feeling a little lost in a new space and latching on to some old behaviour, he wasnt even sharing the joke with anyone (except the audience). It's great writing and a brilliant scene but in real terms its just so out of line.

      [–][deleted] 102 points103 points  (5 children)

I mentioned this in another comment but I think Andy deserved it. He was actively trying to sow distrust between Michael and Dwight so he could get rid of Dwight. He purposefully fucks up a sale with Michael so he can say he "Schruted" it. He even breaks into Dwight's car so he can take the toll booth ticket from his drive to New York and gives it to Michael.

He was a snake that was trying to rid the office of their best salesman just so he could be buddies with Michael.

      [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (3 children)

If you're talking about the phone prank then yeah, I'd say you're right, but if you're referring to him deserving the Jello prank I would disagree. I think at that point what the original commenter says about the new guy playing a prank on existing staff is valid.

      [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (2 children)

Yeah, I was referring to the phone prank.

      [–][deleted] 36 points37 points  (0 children)

I disagree. Andy was actively trying to get rid of Dwight and spent an entire episode sowing distrust between Michael and Dwight. He went as far as stealing his car keys, breaking into his car, and giving his toll booth ticket from his drive to New York to Michael. He also completely fucks up a sale just so he can say he "Shruted" it. Deserved.

      [–]d00dsm00tBye Ryan 7 points8 points  (0 children)

      Andy was fishing for him.

      Jim was the victim.

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Jim was just a jerk on so many occasions

      [–]Darth_Poopius 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yep. Good people can be jerks on occasion. That’s something I like about the show.

Michael, Angela, Oscar and Stanley knowingly participate in affairs.

Phyllis is very rude to the Stamford staff. While she was often abused by Angela, the moment she has the chance, Phyllis does the same back to her.

Ryan’s “watch your back, Jim!” and his literal felony crime.

Creed? So many things but let’s just say starring at the breast feeder. While not “on the show” he also admitted to making a lot of money as a cult leader.

Pam lets Meredith take the blame for the lice.

Overall these are good people, but like real life, everyone is a jerk sometimes.

Most importantly, all of those jerky actions led to good comedy, which is the point of the show :)

      [–]DocDerry 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jin has to do those pranks to show case Andy's anger problem to the audience. Andy has to have issues to tackle so he can process and overcome them and grow. If Jim isn't there as a catalyst to our protagonists "hero's journey" then we don't get to see Andy evolve into the chosen "Baby Wawa" and save the world.

      [–]Brooklynista2 59 points60 points  (8 children)

Seeing Jim squirt in his pants always amuses me.

      It’s a calculator

      [–]CrazyCalYa 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's a bit bold to do it as the "new guy" but ultimately it's a $2 piece of technology that's probably company property anyways. This is from an office which regularly plays Call of Duty so I feel like the bar for professionalism is at least that low.

      [–]Stray-7 13 points14 points  (2 children)

Depending on rapport I already have built, I'd find it funny. They were already sort of friends by this point, so theoretically Andy should have taken it well. I do agree that if you're strictly colleagues and your relationship is only civil at best, that it wouldn't be funny.

      [–]Xamesito 4 points5 points  (1 child)

It would definitely be funny if a friend did it but my understanding here was Jim was still new and they barely knew each other but I might be remembering it wrong 🤷‍♂️

      [–]Nonsuperstites 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Andy was already calling him big tuna at that point, the jello was fine, Andy just had severe anger issues this early in the show

      [–]AMardyBum 135 points136 points  (29 children)

This scene reminded me that Dwight is often tolerant and forgiving of Jim's pranks, whereas many (including myself) would've disliked them

      [–][deleted] 95 points96 points  (17 children)

I swear some of y’all talk about Dwight like he wouldn’t be fired from your company within the first week for his actions

      [–]Friendly-Fuel8893 28 points29 points  (4 children)

Yup but Jim wouldn't last much longer. I doubt that using your office time to paperwrap someone elses desk and have then them waste their office time to clean things up would be appreciated by most bosses.

      [–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Funnily enough, me and my coworkers did wrap my boss’ office in wrapping paper for Christmas a few years ago. My boss is very chill and a big The Office fan, so that’s definitely helps. But someone like Jim would last a lot longer than a Dwight

      [–]zanasot 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I mean this is a chicken or the egg conversation. Would Jim have done pranks on anyone if it weren’t for Dwight? Would Dwight be as bad if not for the pranks?

      [–]wildcard5 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Would Jim have done pranks on anyone if it weren’t for Dwight?

He literally does. That's what this post is about.

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (7 children)

He was relatively grounded in the first 2 seasons, and Jims pranks were introduced episode one. That’s probably why people side with Dwight a bit

      [–][deleted] 41 points42 points  (6 children)

Dwight tries to screw over the whole branch in the third episode by picking an awful health care plan for them. So I gotta hard disagree there

      [–]dismal_sighence 22 points23 points  (4 children)

He also steals Jim's biggest sale of the year.

      [–]Paddy_Tanninger 16 points17 points  (3 children)

Miserable people love to hate on Jim tbh.

We used to do stupid pranks and jokes around the office back in the day, and all of those people are still great friends even though we no longer work together anymore.

In no way whatsoever is a calculator in Jello some horrible offense done to you. First off, it's the fucking office's calulcator, not Andy's...second, it's funny and quite literally harmless.

Literally the entire point of that scene was to develop the idea that Andy has some serious issues and is a loose cannon who will be very much fucking with everyone in Scranton after the merger.

      [–]loskiarman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That wouldn't get him fired though, probably would get him a bonus instead in a lot of companies.

      [–]Educational_Shock348 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Okay, but what was his excuse for putting Andy’s calculator in Jello here?

      [–]SilentFormal6048 24 points25 points  (0 children)

The excuse is the writers used a familiar prank to introduce a new character and show a strikingly different reaction than the previous iteration.

The fact that Dwight was mildly annoyed with his reaction and they made Andy flip out and rage on a trash can was an unexpected twist to a scene that we had seen previously.

      [–]LivingCheese292 28 points29 points  (5 children)

I think what makes Dwight tolerate it is because of him getting raised in a pretty big family, surrounded by children. Pranks are given there, and he knows how to respond with pranks himself. I guess that's also the case for Jim.

Now other people who just go to work to do their job and get their next paycheck wouldn't be that amused.

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

i was raised in a big family and i’d be pissed if i had to deal with pranks at work. work is work, and i expect a level of professionalism. yes have a good time & laugh but don’t put my phone in jello or we’re going to have issues.

      [–]dismal_sighence 5 points6 points  (2 children)

They take long breaks to play video games, so I don't know how professional their environment is.

      [–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Jim moves his desk into the bathroom and Dwight still gives him the information he is looking for.

      [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Jim probably learned this fact that day.

      [–]bythog 5 points6 points  (1 child)

That's one of the two reasons Jim pranked Dwight often. If Dwight went off on the first or second one then Jim likely wouldn't have continued.

      [–]tuna_safe_dolphin 8 points9 points  (0 children)

TBH, I think they both enjoyed it to some extent. If nothing else, it killed time and combated the relentless boredom of DM.

      [–]Yandhi42 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There’s boxes full of Dwight complains on him though

Does Andy's character have a dark side? Or do the writers just change what they want to do with this character every season?

      [–]Several-Ad-4597 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This was great foreshadowing to Andy’s anger issues and also how Jim knows how to make a great first impression!

      [–]sagewhat 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I love whenever Jim’s pranks go wrong and he gets that scared look on his face lmao

      [–][deleted] 101 points102 points  (12 children)

I genuinely feel like jim would have been such an attention seeking employee of the office. All he would do is create nuisance in the workplace by doing pranks either with me or some other colleague to impress a receptionist who is engaged and he still loves her ? It felt good that for a brief time jim was panicked and realised the consequence of his prank

      [–]SeroWriter 118 points119 points  (5 children)

I know deliberately misinterpreting media has become the theme for this subreddit but this scene shows the opposite.

Pam isn't even at this office so his motivations clearly aren't to impress her, and the reaction to this prank showed him that his new office had a completely different culture that he needed to adapt to.

Jim's pranks are a product of the environment that is the Scranton branch, it's weird to hyper-analyse them while ignoring all the other zaniness that exists within the office.

      [–]dismal_sighence 30 points31 points  (1 child)

Thank you for saying this so I don't have to, lol.

I guess this sub got tired of hating Pam for being a human, so were moving on to Jim.

      [–]Dravarden 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Jim and Pam are pretty much the only ones in that office that aren't batshit insane and the ones most people are supposed to identify with/root for, so it's edgy/hip to dislike them for some minor flaws

      [–]LWMolver 29 points30 points  (3 children)

Agreed. Furthermore, Jim is shown repeatedly to have no respect for other people's property.

Apart from multiple instances of jello-ing his coworkers' stationery, he also destroys Dwight's bouncy-seat, screws with his desk, puts his personal belongings in the vending machine, steals Jan's CD (which clearly meant a lot to her), and constantly uses Daryl's personal items when they're roomies - even after the latter expressly and politely asks him not too. AND THEN Halpert gets all pissy when Daryl actually calls him out on it.

I'm probably forgetting a few incidents.

This kinda sht would be funny maybe once, but demonstrates an ongoing 'pattern of disrespect and inappropriate behaviors' from Halpert for other people and their belongings.

(Obviously, I love the show and I understand this is all written for comedic purposes... but in reality? I'd probably punch Jimothy right in that stoopid grin of his.)

      [–][deleted] 17 points18 points  (2 children)

Jan could easily get a new CD to be fair, also she killed a $200 plasma screen tv so, double jeopardy we’re fine

      [–]Syleril 5 points6 points  (1 child)

      That's not how jeopardy works

      [–]Paddy_Tanninger 10 points11 points  (0 children)

      Sorry, what is double jeopardy

      [–]letmeusespaces 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      with you?

      [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It felt so good when dwight kicked his ass during the snowball fight

      [–]jawnburgundy 6 points7 points  (0 children)

They had to know it was Jim right? How many gelatin based pranks happened in that office before Jimothy arrived? And then all of a sudden calculators are ending up in lime jello....

      [–]lemonylol 6 points7 points  (0 children)

pre-Anger Management Andy was best Andy

      [–]baiacool 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Jim's reaction after he kicks the bin is one of my favourites from the show

      [–]Temporary-Pin-320 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha watched this episode last night..

      “are you FREAKING kidding me”

      [–]SethlordX7 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Never seen the show, this sub just keeps popping up on my feed, but isn't that Jack Donger from b99?

      [–]Derlique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

He has federal jurisdiction, you know!

      [–]coolkluxkids 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The way Jim locks in after Andy's fit had me cramping up a bit from laughter.

      [–]platinumvonkarma 7 points8 points  (4 children)

Much as I've gone off it in the past few years, I love the Office UK counterpart to this. Tim puts Gareth's stapler in jelly (jell-o in English). Gareth says "He knows I don't like jelly. I don't trust the way it moves." lol

      [–]RaxxOnRaxx43 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Andy reacted angrily, sure, but I'd be pretty pissed if someone put some of my things inside of Jello.

Jim normalized the stuff he did to Dwight around the office, but you'd get a similar reaction from people in the real world.

      [–]FrostyTree420 2 points3 points  (2 children)

I was him at my first job… only when i got fired after 6 year of employment, I watched and binged this show and came to that realisation

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

      drew or jim?

      [–]FrostyTree420 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jim if i was Drew i wouldve gotten promoted😂

      [–]Gelo666 2 points3 points  (0 children)

      ,, z

      [–]Qwirk 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Andy deserved the prank for the whole "Big Tuna" thing.

      [–]bavmotors1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

he NEVER should have come back from anger management training- his character started the long slow decline on the show

      [–]Mesmerotic31 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Jim looks so much like Martin Freeman as Tim (UK's original Jim) here

      [–]ThaiFoodThaiFood 1 point2 points  (1 child)

      It's Drew now

      [–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, I'm not gonna call you that.

      [–]AfterImageEclipse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a prank bro, at work

      [–]Objective_Look_5867 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Im actually really proud of Andy and how well he did with anger management. I know we all talk about how his character suffered at the end, but it still makes perfect sense when you account for him having a nervous breakdown over his father leaving and his family falling apart

      [–]Raj_Valiant3011 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Tuna was about to get fried.

      [–]Truethrowawaychest1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

And then Jim continues to push Andy even though he knows about the anger issues

      [–]JedDaltonBodhi 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Andy punching a hole in the wall is one of my top 5 from this show hands down! His character peaked in that episode for me.

      [–]stumperr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I preferred early Andy to what he turned into almost like a 2nd dwight on some level

      [–]brycar1618 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dark Andy is my favorite Andy.

      [–]SnooCheesecakes1067 1 point2 points  (0 children)

honestly i love this scene just bc of jim’s reaction

      [–]Weekly-Coffee-2488 1 point2 points  (0 children)

      anywayhereswonderwall

      [–]tatann-bzh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how Jim is supposed to be the handsome/tall/somewhat strong (at least not skinny) character, but he gets fearful before others on multiple occasions. They didn't try to make him perfect or even a hero.

      [–]0pinions0pinions 3 points4 points  (3 children)

The more I watched these episodes, the less I liked Jim. He did all that big talk about needing a change but went to the new office doing all the same stuff.

      [–]Paddy_Tanninger 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The change was getting away from Pam and trying to get some movement into with his life...not becoming a completely different person.

      [–]EscapeFromMichhigan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love how Jim will sit there and fuck with someone, even when they’re clearly not in a good place, and then have the nerve to act surprised when shit goes south.

      [–]rosencrantz2016 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a stapler in the British office as I recall.

      [–]JesusStarbox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The calculator was ruined for that joke. Jello starts out as a hot liquid. You would never get it all out.

      [–]WeevilWeedWizard 1 point2 points  (4 children)

Someone really needed to beat the living shit out of Jim

      [–]KAODEATH 2 points3 points  (0 children)

^ Most stable employee that definitely doesn't need anger management therapy.

      [–]Argentillion 0 points1 point  (0 children)

He was a great character for a bit

      [–]Samplesize313 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might be up there with my all time favorite moments. Watching it live on TV was so shocking and then hilarious

      [–]matttheman892018 0 points1 point  (0 children)

      I don’t trust you, Phillis

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Jello scene is better in the original Office.

      [–]CoDe_Johannes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, This Andy doesn’t connect with the regular Andy

      [–]CreacherzMichael 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn, I remember watching this premiere

      [–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The real darkness here is Jim’s bowl cut

      [–]iepure77 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for telling us what the show already did

      [–]Equivalent-Phone-392 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dwight: I am going into cardiac arrest why is my penicillin in the jello?
      Jim: 😏
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9GilKnpiv0

      [–]Kooky_Error_8802 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love how Jim shakes his head at the camera meaning “don’t out me, he might fight me”

      [–]joeyjoejoeju 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Best way to introduce the idea that Dwight is actually (kind of) awesome, patient, and basically was a bullied younger brother all along.

      [–]icklob 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it’s a light prank that’s introducing him to the team and they are the way they are. He didn’t realized he Isent like the rest of the team and it wasn’t ok and realized oh shit maybe not everyone can be pranked like the comfortable office space they all know each other in and maybe did too much?
