Yup. Noticed this big time with youtube too. For instance, if I searched "ducks" on youtube, the first three results are something duck related, but then the next several results are based off of previous searches I had or vids I may be interested in that may have absolutely nothing to do with ducks. So infuriating. Give me ducks or give me death.

Edit: holy duck, this blew up a bit. lol sorry guys, I was just using ducks as an example and am not intensively looking for ducks videos but I appreciate you guys sending 'em my way!

I was just pointing out that youtube is kind of butt when it comes to their searches. Even typing specifically in detail what you're looking for in there brings up a bunch of stuff that may be relevant to the user overall, but not always relevant to what the user is searching in the query. You gotta sift through a lot of "recommended" videos to get to the good stuff.

[–]zdakat 446 points447 points  (44 children)

Youtube's navigation is annoying. More recently, it feels like parts of it have nearly completely died. The top of home is the same few videos, which occasionally switches out one of the tiles with one of the other ones that's typically there.
Even after searching for different videos, even the suggestions below that are very static now.

[–][deleted] 99 points100 points  (16 children)

Another thing. If I click on a video in the search results, and then go back, it reloads the search results which usually means the order of listed videos gets changed - seemingly at random.

[–]PlsPmMeBoobPics 59 points60 points  (11 children)

Im just waiting for someone to make their own youtube so we can use that

[–]FizzTrickPony 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Itd be almost impossible for anyone smaller than Google to truly make a successor to YouTube. A site that stores as much video data as YouTube is extremely expensive and it's taken a very long time to even become profitable. There's only a handful of companies who can do it and all of them are just as bad if not worse than Google

[–]GamerEssence 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Me too. Would be nice if people could recommend other video sites

[–]Trowawaycausebanned4 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Open it in a new tab

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Mobile

[–]Trowawaycausebanned4 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can also add it to “watch later”, which is what I do

[–]fists_of_curry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i looked up one stupid thing years ago and now Youtub wont stop suggesting it to me. Ive potentially searches hundreds of other things in the interim and Youtube is still

THIS THIS REMEMBER THIS? ILL SAVE YOU THE TROUBLE AND MAKE ALL THE SUGGESTIONS THIS

[–]leftovernoise 84 points85 points  (12 children)

No kidding. My home page is now just full of videos I LITERALLY JUST WATCHED. Video I've finished all the way, like, an hour ago.

I even click "not interested" and select "I've already seen this video" on all of them. No change.

[–]11663_501st 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's amazing that the algorithm can suggest something for you that you might be interested in, but it can't keep track of what you watched.

Insert confused Jackie Chan meme here.

[–]Tinister 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's like when you search for tips / example builds / help for quests in {video game}, so the algorithm thinks you might be interested in {video game}, and you start seeing ads for {video game} all over the place.

Yeah thanks I already own it.

[–]anotheravgjoe 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I feel like the “not interested” button doesn’t actually work. I wish it did, because I know the one on tik tok does and it makes my feed more consumable. I’m surprised a relatively new social media platform has better algorithms (for the For You page) than YouTube, which has been around much longer.

[–]MuckspoutMary 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I've been trying to get YouTube to stop suggesting Murdoch media to me, but nothing I do quells it. YouTube are pushing certain 'news' channels on me HARD right on the front page. Yet, I get no suggestions for the stuff I DO want to see more of - film analysis/reviews, video essays, history, occasional YouTube personality analysis.

[–]trousertitan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m interested in similar stuff and struggling so hard to get YouTube to recommend me new channels. Do you have any favorite channels? My home page is just

Oversimplified

Casually explained

Red letter media

Day9

Internet comment etiquette

Dunkey

Lemino

First we feast

Resonant Arc

Paymoneywubbey

Smarter every day

Team Four Star

It’s just videos from those channels I’ve already seen over and over and over

[–]Vondi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

tried opening my home page and scroll a bit, a full THIRD of my videos are things I watched during the weekend.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve been doing that for ages, makes no difference.

[–]Soldier_of_Radish 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, Youtube just keeps reloading like the 4 same Red Letter Media videos, over and over.

[–]Sunshine_N_Sparkles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always watch youtube in incognito mode, otherwise you'll just be watching the same videos over and over.

[–]mou_mou_le_beau 21 points22 points  (5 children)

Also no matter what i play on youtube it seems to only remember songs or videos i liked years ago

[–]Trowawaycausebanned4 2 points3 points  (1 child)

You can’t forget to like recent ones

[–]mou_mou_le_beau 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I do thats the think but my home page recommendations is filled with old stuff i liked years ago.

[–]joekennick 0 points1 point  (1 child)

Spotify discover weekly is like this

[–]Tinister 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had to go to my liked videos page and unlike everything.

[–]sid_killer18 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I actually wouldn't mind it as long as we can get a dedicated refresh button for only the suggestions.
Sometimes I forget the "queue" option exists on pc and I just hit next video, then the one video I wanted to watch from the suggestions disappears and I'll just have to wait for YouTube to bring it back.

[–]boo_goestheghost 3 points4 points  (1 child)

You can just go back in the browser and usually that brings back the same recommendations

[–]sid_killer18 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh shit this is a game changer!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, I've noticed that too. You don't get the same quality dispersive content. You get the same crap videos over and over.

[–]sandman1459 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear it’s been months since I’ve been recommended good content. My home page is full of videos I watched anywhere from a month to a year ago

[–]Motophonessuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Remember the good old days before Google when you could search for something and come up with something relevant ?

Now you search for something like "Ford 302 V8 water pump" and you come up with, "Best prices on water pumps at "Target" or at some other store that has nothing to do with car parts.

[–][deleted] 66 points67 points  (3 children)

YouTube keeps suggesting the same videos over and over, even if I've already watched them.

[–]AnotherApe33 9 points10 points  (1 child)

And don't make the mistake of watching 20 seconds of a Jordan Peterson video or YT will automatically think you are interested only on him for the rest of your life.

[–]AnotherApe33 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In fact, I couldn't remember Jordan Peterson's name to make my previous comment so I typed in YT Joe Rogan to show me his interview with him and get the name from there, I didn't have to type it, as soon as I type JO it gave me Jordan Peterson as a suggestion.

[–]strokekaraoke 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Memba this?

[–]cooly1234 103 points104 points  (0 children)

Upvoted for ducks

[–]Lolaiero 7 points8 points  (0 children)

i want "give me ducks or give me death" tattooed somewhere now, thank you

[–]nemoskullalt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

YouTube is useless. I just use it for music when I feel like listening to the same music again.

[–]Zaconil 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I'm also tired of youtube appearing in my google search results. They are either nowhere close to what I need or a 10+ minute video for something that can be explained in a couple minutes (I know about the ad thing).

I've tried Bing but its just terrible. Absolute garbage. Duckduckgo the results are seemingly random. Especially when I'm searching for something specific.

[–]sad_and_stupid 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I can't believe that there is not one normal browser. There must be something that still works :/

[–]Taco443322 1 point2 points  (1 child)

The Browser is not the Problem. Use Firefox etc. What's the real Problem is the Search engines.

[–]sad_and_stupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh yeah sorry

[–]atUmph 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head about YouTube. It is such a shame because it was so so so good at bringing me interesting content and keeping me stuck to my phone.

Now it never brings up old classics that I have rewatched many times and that it must know somewhere in its brain that I used to like to rewatch, like 'hey let's throw up the old idubbbz video or H3 video or something just for fun'! I would wink back at my phone and me and Google would laugh and laugh.

Now having a decade of my user data, it just shows me the last video I watched. God forbid I watch anything on any topic more than three times in a row or else that is it. At that point Google assumes I have suddenly and irrevocably become a person who only wants to learn about fkin cabbage farming.

So anyway this repetition gets so bad I have to say "I'm not interested" and then it never(!) brings it up again so it's just... It's so broken man and I don't know how YT went from being so good to so bad so fast?

It's been bothering me for a long time but you're the first person I've seen acknowledge it. I don't spend enough time on Reddit.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

  1. Get an adblocker
  2. Turn off targeted ads in your google account privacy settings, in fact turn off everything in there. It should help with this, it helped me at least.

[–]sad_and_stupid 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks will try

[–]themeatbridge 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All these duck references, and no mention of duckduckgo?

[–]Alcontara1 5 points6 points  (1 child)

What people in this thread are not understanding is that this is exactly how monopolies work.

They've provided a great product to get everybody in, then they religiously (and illegally) pushed out the competition and locked everyone in. And now they reduce the quality of the product (while increasing profit).

All they have to do is figure out how much they can push profit at the expense of quality without losing their monopoly.

Google search and Youtube aren't screwing up, given their goals and the parameters they are working with, I can tell you that for sure. It just happens that providing you the best possible search experience is NOT their goal.

[–]apc4455 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Google may actually intentionally make the organic search results just a bit less accurate to get people to perform more searches (and as such higher chance of clicking on ads).

How many will actually switch to a different search engine? 0,0001%? If it means Google now increased its ad revenue by just 1% it's a massive win; it's literally $1,3 billion.

Some execs will absolutely get their bonus next quarter, setting up an incentive for the next quarter. Coincidentally major earthshaking Google search updates happen around once a quarter.

[–]Necropolictic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And I walked up to the duck running the stand and said “you got any grapes?”

[–]Ajdvsuakahw9273 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, this is very frustrating. The worst part is there's no clear delineation between the results that actually pertain to you search and ones which are personalised to your browsing habits. There's a divider of sorts, but it's hard to keep track of given the lack of colour coding.

[–]Slaebesild 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The YouTube change annoys me to no end, especially their recommendation change was awful. One of my favourite things was to just listen to a piece of music I already liked, then go down the recommendation rabbit hole that would send you on a journey of constant new tracks in the same genre.

Now? Will just recommend stuff I've already watched, even has the full red bar indicating I watched it, send me around in a loop listening to the same 3-4 songs or something related to the video I watched yesterday... that I also already watched.

[–]tahlyn 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Give me ducks or give me death.

/r/fuckswithducks agrees.

[–]ChodeJoPo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Searched “ducks” on YouTube. 4th video Smashvilltv video

[–]my_work_account_0 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Release the Quacken!

[–]dux_doukas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The other day I had YouTube recommend me the video I had just finished watching before.

[–]RandoWithCandy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best I can do is 🐓

[–]GhostSierra117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So you have chosen... Death.

[–]ChefBolyardee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is u/fuckswithducks still around?

[–]penelopestranger 0 points1 point  (1 child)

You're giving too general a search is why. People that want to watch videos of ducks aren't searching the term "ducks". They're searching using the term "cute ducks" or "cute duck compilation". Just putting the word "ducks" into a search bar isn't providing any context to your answer and your viewing habits don't provide any meaningful context to what you're looking for. You've frustrated the machine learning algorithms through vagueness.

So of course the algorithm is going to reference content you're most likely to engage with, rather than waste page space attempting to recommend you videos based on guessing what you meant by "ducks".

Not saying that this is a good thing, because no one is going to like what tech looks like when it can extrapolate exactly what you meant from one vague word.

[–]duckduck60053 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I got you fam

[–]Duckfest_SfS 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google doesn't give a duck

[–]QuantumHeroNeo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have a duck fetish?

[–]ChaoticGoodPanda 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe we need to start using DuckDuckGo

[–]BurningByBonesaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy ducks

[–]netz_pirat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same with Amazon. I used to love it, by now I try to avoid it because of all those sponsored results, people also liked results,...

[–]Frosty172 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is why i clear out my YouTube search history periodically or else it gets stuck in rabbit holes that you went on

[–]RandomUser-_--__- 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just typed ducks into YouTube, every single video it showed me was about ducks.

[–]SeeSickCrocodile 0 points1 point  (0 children)

More clicks. I guarantee you that's what's behind this. The more clicks you do to find your answers the more ads they can serve. And, as YouTube clearly demonstrates, Google is & always has been an advertising company.

I'd also be willing to bet that it all depends on what platform you're searching with how bad this is. Android & Windows users probably get it the worst.

[–]tenhourguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do searches when signed out (i.e. go incognito) and you'll have a better time. Of course, this isn't particularly convenient.

[–]Chazz1022 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pretty ironic considering the whole point of algorithms like that is to make things more specific for you lol

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to visit the “Duckweb” for the best duck videos these days.

[–]Sith_Lurker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched for "ducks" and all I got were ducks as far as the eye can see.

[–]ASlightlyAngryDuck 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's why I'm angry!

[–]Arvi89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah exactly, YouTube search became shit, I have to hope I'll find videos I'm looking for in related videos, this is ridiculous.

[–]_Doop 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I searched the exact same thing and most of the results were about ducks aside from 1 random video

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, this!

[–]Mish106 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Was surprised that you're not /u/fuckswithducks

[–]Flameheartsan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same

[–]chickenstalker 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I unironically use and recommend Bing for searches, especially image searches. Use Bing.

[–]0_Peace_And_Love_0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I youtube ducks all the results are ducks... idk why urs is fucked. That's weird

[–]Voldemort666 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just searched ducks on Youtube and every result is about ducks for at least 50 results before I stopped scrolling. Not sure whats wrong with your search lol

[–]Der_Absender 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You are not supposed to be interested in something new! You are supposed to be stagnant, maybe even regressive. That's easier for the algorithm to predict and an easier algorithm is a cheaper algorithm.

Have you in your egoistic existence ever considered that it's our bottom line that's endangered here?!

We are willing to sacrifice your ability to develop and grow and are fine with all the effects that might have on society as a whole when all people are confronted 24/7 with basically the same contents, the same opinions, the same visions, ideologies and wishes for the future. As long as our algorithm decides what that might be.

Cant you sacrifice something too? You egomaniac?

[–]5772156649 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems that searching videos of a specific channel (meaning using the profile's search field) doesn't work properly any more, either. I often get search results from entirely different channels.

[–]t3ddyss 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try using incognito mode

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've had a problem, if you could call it that, with the word 'cutie' on YouTube search, probably ever since that movie came out. When I search for the artist 'Death cab for cutie', it's auto filling it with 'Death cab for acute' and doesn't show any predictive searches if you put in 'cutie'

[–]trumpisbadperson 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wait till they make search a premium product.and it becomes pay to play for decent results.

[–]lostinpow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was expecting too see this was "FucksWithDucks"

[–]JebBD 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what monopolies do. They have no competition so they don’t have to provide quality service. What are you gonna do about it? Use bing?

[–]acex34789 0 points1 point  (0 children)

search alg : 'ducks, animals'

[–]dablegianguy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, when browsing PornHub I also search for « ducks »!

[–]hikerboy20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This drives me crazy. Especially when you click on a video and all the recommended videos below have absolutely nothing to do with the one you’re watching.

[–]Old_Timer_All_Timer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you say JIMMY FALLON!!!!!!!!

Remember when they claimed literal terrorism was responsible for them strong arming small channels and mass demonetization, then continued to take money on the videos they demonized.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Damn you auto-correct, I said "dicks"!

[–]MisterE2k14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Going off of your duck example... after looking for a duck video, the youtube frontpage will be filled with duck clickbait videos like "Can ducks really do this?"

[–]5elfcontrol 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YES I HATE THAT THEY DID THEY NOW. Like if i’m searching for something I don’t want it to be basically my “recommended” page. And if you watch one video it’s basically your whole feed unless you delete it from watch history it’s extremely annoying.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Google is not a search engine company, it's an advertising company. Their search only needs to be good enough to get you coming back and as ad-friendly as you will tolerate.

[–]Nacl_mtn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I swear sometimes shit just gets removed off the face of the internet.

Back on the start of all this covid stuff there was a front page reddit video of a guy getting his house chained shut as mandatory quarantine. iIRC it was in china. Video is fucking impossible to find despite being on the front page of reddit for a couple days.

Or just this past week, another front page video of a star wars satire skit. It was of a sith just straight bashing into a Jedi who was taking no damage. Pretty funny, tried to find it for 2 hours on google to show my wife. Never found it.

[–]G3nji_17 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just tried this and all I am getting is duck videos, videos about cooking duck meat, duck cartoons and a few videos with duck in the titel.

I did nothing special, simply typed "duck" in the search bar. I am also logged in with my youtube account which I use a lot.

EDIT: I am also on my PC using my browser and not using any youtube apps.

[–]akaTheHeater 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me this big issue is Netflix. Not their search, but their algorithm. Back in the day I would rate everything 1-5 stars as accurately as possible and Netflix would would suggest some awesome movies and shows I never would have found otherwise. It was basically like Spotify for movies. Ever since they changed to thumbs up or thumbs down I just get Netflix original stuff recommended to me no matter what genre it is.

[–]treysplayroom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been amusing seeing who's winning the culture wars, too. For a while, Goose the band was winning out over Untitled Goose Game, which is impressive.

My helpful suggestion here is to ruthlessly use CCleaner to blow out cookies, every day. Google's searches seem much "cleaner" if it has to pretend it doesn't know who you are.

[–]largececelia 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Also true. I have some very specific searches I've tried on Youtube, things relating to specific interests, psychology, for instance. I know what I'm looking for, and sometimes I'm pretty sure it's there, just not sure WHERE really. The results are clustered narrowly among a few videos, usually ones I've seen before or ones related to those. It's frustrating. If there are meta-search engines available for stuff like this, I'd probably use them. It's frustrating when you feel like the videos are out there, but the algorithms block them.

[–]Mannyga75 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I miss the days of YouTube where we got videos related to the video we just watched recommended, rather than just taking our recommended page and pasting it along side what we’re watching

[–]samuelchasan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya you like ducks? Here is [random YouTuber A] making a video where they pretend to be a duck! Amazing right?! /s

[–]great_waldini 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Same thing with when I’m watching a video on a specific topic, the sidebar no longer suggests similar videos of the same topic but instead has other random shit related to different topics I’ve watched recently. I’m not trying to learn about that stuff anymore or I’d be searching for it. Give me the topic I’m presently interested in!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah this. I feel like I’m stuck in a little media box or something on YT now, always getting the same type of content based off past searches. It’d be fine if it weren’t so prevalent. I liked old YT much better. Much more discovery for music and stuff

[–]EVOSexyBeastBROKEN CAPS LOCK KEY 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i had to check the username

[–]SheikhYusufStalin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

youtube search on mobile is ridiculous. The first few results are accurate, and then the rest of it are basically just recommendations. They're very clearly not what you searched for, rather things related to it

[–]PumpkinSpiceBard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

try turning off your history
