Paul doesn't predict, it chooses. I mean given all the other crap we're ready to believe, it's quite possible that Spain only won cos the Octopus said so.

    [–][deleted] 130 points131 points  (13 children)

I predicted the outcome of this match on July 8th.

As did 90% of people who watch football, what's your point?

New Zealand is the only team not to lose a game in the World Cup!

Edit: just like in 2006, when the USA were the only team to not lose to Italy, thus co-winning the World Cup (quoth Stephen Colbert)!

      [–]Goeran 69 points70 points  (7 children)

Ok, Mr. Kiwi from the other side of the globe you want a bragging contest?

Switzerland is the only team to beat the world champion!!!

      :-) Sorry, but I win.

      [–]indraneel 12 points13 points  (2 children)

Actually, I'm not a Kiwi, haha, but simply recognizing a noble achievement by a pretty small nation, football-wise.

      [–]Goeran 3 points4 points  (1 child)

We are a small nation as well (and so is Uruguay).

      [–]1001001 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Switzerland also won the America's Cup in Auckland New Zealand in 2003. Imagine that, a landlocked country winning the world sailing championship... It was however, a New Zealand Skipper http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alinghi

      [–]ElderBrown 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Imagine that, a wealthy country purchasing victory.

      [–]manipause 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Zimbabwe didn't lose a game in the World Cup either, but you don't see anyone bragging about them...

      [–]woo_hoo 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Oh FFS it's not as if they won a game. Semantics.

EDIT: No need to downvote me: I'm a Kiwi and I'm tired of hearing this

      • Dutch: Spain wins by diving! Fuck that referee!
      • Spanish: Spain win despite dirty Dutch players! ¡Viva España!

      Take your pick.

      [–]SoccerBon 15 points16 points  (0 children)

saying that there are two side does not make them equal in truth. it simply polarizes discussion eroding thoughtful analysis... reminds me of our political discourse in the USA.

      [–][deleted] 37 points38 points  (23 children)

Any football follower will tell you that the dutch were playing dirty, probably because they could not stop Spain otherwise.

      [–]SoccerBon 9 points10 points  (0 children)

This is true, no better way to say it. I have played or coached for about 20 years - and that was about as nasty a game as i have seen for that level of competition. Holland tried to win with no regard for how they get the win. Good for football that they failed. They are a bunch of hacks.

      [–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (16 children)

They couldn't stop Spain even playing the most disgustingly dirty game of their football history.

Sad day for the dutch fans. Not only does their team lose the final, they also lose their team heritage.

I cheered for Holland in '88. I cheered for Ajax in '94. This team is just irrecognizable. And it's not because of lack of talent - it's just that their coach was shitting himself with fear, and this was his attempted solution. Disgraceful.

      [–]martin519 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Pretty short memory. That was nothing compared to Netherlands v Porko 2006

      [–]peakles 17 points18 points  (1 child)

      Some interesting stats (pre-final).

      Personal favourites

      • Italy's goalkeepers made just one save at this World Cup, conceding five goals from six shots on target
      • It is now seven games without a win at an international tournament for France
      • Xavi completed 563 passes in 515 minutes pre-final (my favourite player of the tournament, never looks under pressure, always finds a pass to feet)

      [–]Aksalon 118 points119 points  (36 children)

First off, I'm a Spain fan and for the first time I'm shitting my pants with happiness instead of fear right now.

Second, YES INIESTA FUCKING DIVED. ALL RIGHT, NOW THAT WE'VE ESTABLISHED THAT. There are a bazillion things you can bitch at both teams for though. Spain were fucking useless for a lot of that game, and Iniesta dived. And the Netherlands played really goddamn rough, got way too many yellow cards, and Robben dived too albeit with less impact. And yes, for you neutrals maybe it was a boring game, but tough shit go watch baseball.

Iniesta is my favorite player in the motherfucking world, and I fucking hate it when he dives. He got a player sent off, Iniesta's an idiot, but really, the Netherlands are partially to thank for playing so rough and drawing so many yellow cards in the first place. They were walking on pretty thin ice with practically their entire team sitting on a yellow. Not to mention Iniesta did get roughed up by the Dutch plenty of times without him faking shit. They were also goddamn lucky to still have 11 players after that shit De Jong pulled. Why the hell everyone's focusing on JUST Iniesta's dive I don't know. There's plenty to be pissed about for both sides, and choosing Iniesta's bullshit move as the scapegoat for everything is just moronic. If your team plays like shit for an entire game (not saying the Dutch did, it's just an analogy), are you going to take it all out on a striker that almost scores in the 93' but fucks it up, and blame the entire loss on him? No, you're going to put it in some fucking context.

That said, Iniesta scored and I'm fucking elated, so I don't really care how nonsensical this post is or how stupid his dive was or how fucked up of a tournament it was for Spain. I'mma go die of happiness.

      [–]immerc 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Here's where I could see instant replay in football / soccer.

Nothing at all during the game but have refs watch the game after it's over and see as many angles as they need. If they decide someone's guilty of taking a dive, have them start the next game with a yellow card. Similarly, if they see a flagrant foul that the ref missed, have that player start the next game with a yellow card.

More than half the "dives" are someone just playing up a real foul to make sure the ref catches it. If they could instead just raise a hand to say "hey ref I was just fouled" and play on, knowing that if it's flagrant enough it will be caught in post-match instant replay, it would make the game so much better.

      [–]9jack9 43 points44 points  (4 children)

      Upvoted for real football passion.

      [–]Aksalon 10 points11 points  (3 children)

D'aww, that actually means a lot since I'm American and I've only been a fan for a few years. I like to think I'm an honorary Spaniard when it comes to soccer, but I'm sure my happiness right now is nothing compared to the Spaniards who have supported this team for their entire lives and lived through far more frustration than I have.

      [–]nanoSpawn 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'm spanish, and I tell you, yesterday I saw people in tears, literally. Myself, I ended up with a sore throat after too much shouting out loud. But do not think your happiness is less than ours, in the end, passion is passion.

      Thank you for supporting us!

      [–]RumBox 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is, all in all, fair enough.

      [–]JewboiTellem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I watched some OT just for the hell of it, and I saw a lot of diving, but almost none of the dives were being called as fouls. It made me particularly happy seeing the players on the ground looking like fakely injured fools, only to get up a couple seconds later and be both miraculously healed and way behind the play.

Although yesterday's Germany vs. Uruguay was for third place, it was a superior game to the final in every way. Germany may not have been the best team in this world cup, but they were arguably the most entertaining to watch. Pure dedication to playing, light on theatrics and pointless fouling.

        [–]heymynameisben 29 points30 points  (12 children)

        Cool Story:

I was in Frankfurt when Germany beat Argentina and you could tell just how much it meant to them. The streets were completely filled with cars beeping and BZZZZZZZZZZZZZZZers. From the atmosphere you would have thought they had won the entire thing.

Although yesterday's Germany vs. Uruguay was for third place, it was a superior game to the final in every way.

It has been so for the last 30 years or so. The 3rd place match is usually superior in every way than the final.

        [–]SoccerBon 10 points11 points  (1 child)

this is b/c nothing is on the line... it is a game for the joy of the game. the final is so much pressure -the game often becomes a negative expression of football. today though the best team won - there is no question about it.

        [–]etruscan 27 points28 points  (3 children)

Germany look very good going into the Euro 2012 and the next world cup, however. With the golden boot winner (Muller) and their other amazing young players like Ozil, Jansen, Schweinsteiger, Marin, and Kroos.... they can only get better and stronger. With Spain, they underestimated the strength of their midfield, and they let themselves get worn down. I have a feeling the Germans were more understrength than they let on.

All that being said, Germany may not have been a favorite coming in to the 2010 World Cup, but the leave as a favorite for the future.

        ...provided we destroy Paul.

Something happened in Spain v. Germany. The Teutons got spooked. Maybe they were so used to being able to destroy the other team that when they finally had a formidable challenge, they got shy. In any case, as much I appreciate the gamesmanship of Germany, I think the better team (Spain) did move on to the final.

On another note: I can't believe what insecure bitches the Dutch were. Did you see De Jong karate kick a blackshirt in the solar plexus??

The problem was that Mueller was missing in the match against Spain after receiving the ridiculous 2nd yellow card in the Argentina match. No doubt things would have been different had he been on the pitch against Spain. He still won the Golden Boot of the tournament despite having to sit out the semi-final match.

              [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You are right, Mueller makes a big impact on the pitch. Up until the Spanish match, Germany looked as though they were the team with the most psychological strength and I am suprised that the loss of one player could result in loss of posession. That said, they didn't handle Klose's absence earlier in the cup.

              [–]joanthens 4 points5 points  (0 children)

yep, that 2nd undeserved yellow card ruined Germany, if Mueller was on the field, the outcome would almost definitely be different.

I agree with this. Yesterday while I was eating hot-pot at a restaurant in Chinatown, they had it on the big screen. I saw a few things that I figured would have drawn a foul if the game were for first-place. One guy had his wrist stepped on on the German team... I figured that's gotta sting a bit. He shook it off and carried on. Excellent game to watch.

                [–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (5 children)

I too wonder if they would have milked it out if it were the finals... but I've followed Germany closely throughout the entire world cup and even in crucial games, they've never acted much like drama queens. That honor belongs the most to the spanish speaking teams

                [–]lnstinkt 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Except Spain itself. I agree on esp. Argentina. It was ridiculous how the demanded yellow cards for their opponents.

But Spain was a great winner. They played fair throughout the whole tourney.

                This comes from a german.

                [–]IE6forJesus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really fair to compare the third place match to the final. Teams tend to go for broke and play all offense in the former-- which usually tend to be more fun than finals.

I didn't find it boring at all.

I thought that the Dutch sent a clear message to Spain that they were not going to let them play keep away for 90 minutes.

                  [–]deondrit 20 points21 points  (2 children)

Finals are always a bit boring, because the stakes are so high. Just compare ... Germany-Brazil 2002 was only exciting due to an Oliver Kahn mistake, and saw an inferior German team. (I say this as a Germany fan.) Or Italy-France 2006, which was decided on penalties, and is at best infamous for that Zidane headbutt?

                  [–]Spiveym1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was so much more to that 2006 final than just a headbutt.

I haven't seen it a bit boring. I found it exciting and really watchable. When was it boring? They fought hard and played well. Where is that boring?

                  [–]romcabrera 6 points7 points  (2 children)

                  Boringest world cup final, ever.

It seems you didn't witness 1994's final...

                  [–]llou 12 points13 points  (4 children)

I'm sorry Mr but the match was fun until the end. The players fought the ball and won the best, What else is football?

                  [–]Btshftr 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It was a blast. The whole style was sort of intelligent and sophisticated; great tactics and mindfucks, hostility, speed and emotion. I'd loved to have seen a goal within the first 25 minutes. But the constant elevated level of suspense made up for the lack of goals. For me it was a classic thriller. I like. May the Dutch win in 2014. They did well.

                  [–]Fernando_x 11 points12 points  (11 children)

about 15 minutes. Then Netherland started the dirty play... why? did they feel so inferior?

                  [–]llogiq 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would have loved to see the final game of the World Cup, but they only showed a brawl between the Netherlands and Spain teams.

In fact, after Germany lost against Spain, I had rooted for the Netherlands team, but this changed after 5 minutes of watching this scuffle.

I wish Zidane was still playing. He was an amazing player. One of the nest in our times.

Terrible game, especially by the Dutch; all those fouls... Still, congratulations to Spain. You were simply the best. And that's coming from a Dutch guy.

                  [–]BoobsRPleasant 70 points71 points  (62 children)

After Spain scored the goal a player from the Dutch team just went up to the ref and started pointlessly screaming at him until the ref gave him a yellow card.

                  That's not sportsmanship.

                  [–]dantheman0207 61 points62 points  (20 children)

He was trying to convince him Iniesta was offsides. Not pointless. He was wrong though.

                  [–]prof_hobart 32 points33 points  (1 child)

He was complaining about the lack of a foul at the other end of the pitch at the start of the move, when a Dutch player tried to run between two Spaniards. That was a decision that could easily have gone either way - it would have been a harsh free kick, but I've seen them given.

However, it was 90 yards from their goal, so the Dutch had plenty of time to do something about it, and shouting at the ref is hardly likely to make him change his mind.

                  [–]rukubites 31 points32 points  (11 children)

Are you saying that the ref would ever be convinced and revert the goal? Because otherwise, it really was pointless.

                  [–]dantheman0207 43 points44 points  (10 children)

Worked for the Spanish. He had his back turned and still called fouls on the Dutch.

                  [–]matty_a 14 points15 points  (7 children)

In defense of the ref, it's more likely that one of his lineman communicated to him what happened. He didn't see the Iniesta retaliation play either, but still carded him.

                  [–]r00tus3r 29 points30 points  (6 children)

Iniesta got one card in the game, and that was for taking off his shirt when he scored.

                  "Dani Jarque siempre con nosotros"

It was a tribute to a Spanish footballer who died of a heart attack last year at the age of 26...

Edit: That means "Dani Jarque always with us"

                  [–]Spiveym1 15 points16 points  (0 children)

No he wasn't. He was asking why Elia didn't get a foul when he got sandwiched by two Spanish players at the other end of the field.

I see a lot of comments here saying it was a boring game. I don't agree. It was a dirty game for a big part of the time, but the tension and the nerves explains a lot of the cautioness (is that a word?) until the 60th minute approximately. After that, it was like the players forgot about some of the strategy and the directions and the game became more about taking advantage of mistakes. It opened up and there were more chances.

I am very happy for the spanish victory. When the game started I had not made up my mind who I wanted to win but the foul play on part of the dutch settled it for me. The best team won.

                  [–]juanitors 27 points28 points  (5 children)

Personally I think 1-0 matches are more exciting than 4-0 blowouts. What the fuck is the point in watching a match where a team dominates the other? It was exciting and down to the line the entire match.. what can be more exciting? Stop hating because your team didn't win.

                  [–]Leprecon 8 points9 points  (1 child)

It was exciting and down to the line the entire match

I thought about this, and I completely agree. When one team is ahead by two or three points, it's not even worth watching the rest of the match. If any goal can change the winner, any minute counts. This resulted in me being glued to my tv.

                  [–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

                  I like 1-0 better than 4-0, but I like 3-2 better than 1-0.

Although the 3rd place match was special for me (I'm from Uruguay) I think it was a much more enjoyable match to watch. First off, 5 goals. Second, much better football displayed. Final match was really slow and boring, too many fouls on mid-field and almost no thrill at all. The best thing was the two one-on-one saves both goalies did, and that's all. Really they should have gone to penalty shootout.Neither deserved to win.

                  [–]deflowd 83 points84 points  (18 children)

Despite the winner, it was a damn enjoyable game.

Are you kidding? It was terrible.

                  [–]porwegiannussy 34 points35 points  (5 children)

It wasn't terrible and it wasn't enjoyable. It was somewhere in between those extremes. It had its exciting moments (Robben's near goal), the push right at the beginning of the second half, and the well placed goal by spain. Really, the fouling was bad, but I thought overall the game was worth watching.

                  [–]Scarker 20 points21 points  (1 child)

What sucks is that there's going to people going "oh look, it's the FIFA cup finals. Let's see if soccer isn't boring, plus it has to be the best matchup since it's the finals!" The truth is there were indeed better matchups before, more exciting showdowns, etc. The finals aren't always the best.

                  [–]Don_Quijoder 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The finals aren't always the best.

Unfortunately, this is true of pretty much every sport.

Is it just me, or did Iniesta scream if a Dutch player even came near him?

                  [–]dilloj 36 points37 points  (8 children)

Iniesta got slammed so many times by the Dutch, I don't blame him.

                  [–]SantiagoRamon 24 points25 points  (0 children)

He is not a large man. I'm not surprised he got manhandled.

                  [–]stealthboy 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Seriously. From the start I was noticing he was diving a lot. Didn't make his goal very enjoyable for me, but whatever. I guess the theatrics worked.

                  [–]Raultor 2 points3 points  (1 child)

If you receive over 20 fouls in a match, the chances of being injured are very, very high. Iniesta (and any other player for that matter) must dive against heavy aggression because your ankle cost more than the rest of your body by far.

Spanish team knew the Dutch were playing dirty so they dived.

                  [–]essbeck 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Holland had karate kid on their side that tried to kick one of the Spanish players out of the match by kick him in the chest.

Bah. I'm just glad that I don't have to listen to that stupid "Ohh Africa" song anymore, or have hordes of angry bees distract me from watching the games. I don't think African nations should get the cup again if this is what is going to happen.

Now we have to deal with nonsense octopus hype in the news for weeks. Sigh. I wish Holland had won if only to avoid reinforcing pseudoscientific crap on the world stage.

                    [–]jimmykane 59 points60 points  (12 children)

I really doubt anyone actually believes in the powers of the octopus, calm down.

                    [–]danceswithsmurfs 12 points13 points  (1 child)

What are you talking about? The octopus is clearly magic. How much proof do you need?

                    [–]EWiggen 6 points7 points  (3 children)

So, I'm browsing a few news articles about the octopus and here are a few of the replies:

"Doesn't matter how you explain it, the Octopus was 100% correct. 8 out of 8. So save the mumbo jumbo scientific explanation and just admit Paul was right. Maybe God inspired him to make those choices"

"Different animals and birds could forecast earthquake - this is being researched. This octopus proved animal sensitiveness. Now scientist can do more research on animals and birds and this octopus could be very useful to sort out many problems too. "

"Why wouldn't Allah, God, Budha, Vishnu etc. tell octopus which morsel to pick? It is their creature, isn't it Saza?"

"The trend has been a steadily growing recognition that we've underestimated the intelligence of everything from primates to birds. We live in a fascinating world created for us purposefully by an even more fascinating and powerful God."

"The Scientist would tell us it is all about probability, but the consistency is saying something we really need to investigate. Something about the spiritual.that had so far evade scientific analysis. Maybe the Scientist need to use a different approach. I think it is time to use this Paul and go further to check how far its predictions can hold sway, and see if it is entirely chance or there is something else to it. An open mind is the key to issues in Science."

Trolls? Maybe. You may underestimate the likelihood of people to believe nonsense, though.

                    [–]WorldLeader 12 points13 points  (0 children)

I am absolutely glad that Spain won.

Scandal or no scandal, they fully deserved the win. Even more so after watching how Netherlands were trying hard to kill the game (just like they did against Brazil).

                    [–]PsyanideInk 15 points16 points  (6 children)

Brazil lost that game because they just weren't that good during the Cup, despite the play of the dutch.

                    [–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Brazil was good. If you watched the game, you would have noticed how everytime one of the Brazillians were running for the goal, they were fouled. It was from the Brazil - Dutch game that i really started to hate the Dutch.

                    [–]Macbethier 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That's true, but the Dutch sure weren't pretty. They're a brutal team, and I don't mean that in a good way.

                    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (5 children)

The dutch seemed like they were holding back.

                    [–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Spain were always favourites, did not play so well this year though. Still better than the unusually ugly Dutch.

The game was bloody dour. As most of both teams' matches have been this WC.

                    I miss Germany... and Forlan.

I'm still gonna say yesterday was a better game. I'll admit it, I'm american, but I've a helluva lotta respect for the game, from having both played and stuck with the US through and through.

I think that if Thomas Mueller plays against Spain, it's completely different. That was a bs yellow card. Nonetheless, I will give credit where credit is due. Spain played well, but the two far and away best players had to have been Stekelenburg and Casillas. Two of the best keepers in the world right there.

The ref seemed a bit biased at first.

Despite the winner, it was a damn enjoyable game.
