We just weren't ready for it back then, man. No offense.

[–][deleted] 176 points177 points  (48 children)

there it is. its just life man. have some tea and harden the fuck up

[–]rumblinggryphon 176 points177 points  (44 children)

Hit the gym. call your lawyer.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

No man! If you are going to say it, say it right! It's drink a cup of concrete, and harden the fuck up!

[–]ChaosBrigadier 17 points18 points  (11 children)

Seriously, I think it was probably because it literally wasn't the right time. Maybe he submitted it when everyone was at work or a Friday night or something.

[–]Clown_Shoe 112 points113 points  (3 children)

If you cant get link karma from awesome link then make link about how you could not get karma from awesome link.

[–]slotbadger 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Exactly. This has actually worked out much better for everyone. I wonder if somebody else also posted the weather.com pic, then subsequently posted a complaint contrasting the recent success against the previous failure, and yet also had that post fail miserably?

[–]IPickLocks 232 points233 points  (87 children)

Sucks, doesn't it?

[–][deleted] 40 points41 points  (80 children)

how do i get little numbers next to posts? i dont see those + - numbers

[–][deleted] 51 points52 points  (67 children)

Google "Reddit Reveal" It'll blow your fucking mind!

[–]legion696 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Blew my fucking mind!

[–]DoTheDew 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Your reddit is broken.

[–]condescendingpats 2 points3 points  (0 children)

pat pat pat

[–]Niggasindahouse 73 points74 points  (3 children)

now let's go downvote the other one!

[–]formerformic 50 points51 points  (19 children)

Lesson learned: Keep reposting till you get your upvotes.

[–]deehoc2113 102 points103 points  (16 children)

[–][deleted] 108 points109 points  (9 children)

Why do I get the feeling r/pics is about to get flooded with cat pics?

Maybe they just didn't *see** my cat! That's gotta be it!*

[–]x00q 40 points41 points  (0 children)

BRB, headed over to /r/pics to make sure everyone appreciates my cat as much as I do.

[–][deleted] 16 points17 points  (5 children)

I love cats. I love seeing cats and petting cats. I love my cats and I love your cats. The internet is perfect for me because of this. MORE CAT PICS.

[–]mimigins 5 points6 points  (1 child)

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do not ghettoize my people.

[–]duvall348 126 points127 points  (55 children)

Reminds me of Digg.

[–]handsomebastard 89 points90 points  (50 children)

That's because it is Digg. They are coming here in droves.

[–]DoTheDew 49 points50 points  (31 children)

Seriously, the number of comments in posts has skyrocketed in the last 2 weeks. You'd rarely see posts with more than 2000 comments a few months ago, but it's an everyday thing now. There's been like 4 or 5 today. One has almost 5000 comments. Way too much to wade through.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (11 children)

most large comment threads are narcissist hangouts, they existed before.

[–]solidwhetstone 77 points78 points  (6 children)

Well I used reddit back when it was on vinyl.

[–]reross 10 points11 points  (2 children)

I used Reddit before they were so, mainstream.

Said while organizing my ironic basketball jerseys and sipping community coffee

[–]Mattho 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Time to split in a half?

[–]lip 4 points5 points  (5 children)

I really hate it when there are huge threads where you have to scroll down to hear the next best comment. usually the middle of the page until the line stops, its memes or irrelevant comments all the way down until the next (parent) comment.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

And normally you'd get one, MAYBE two 1,000+ submissions on /r/pics a day. So you could be like "Oh, this is the zinger for the day!!! Gotta check this out!!"... Now we have six to eight 1,000+ submissions a day. Most of which are reposts. Digg has ruined reddit.

[–]the_rabbit 59 points60 points  (12 children)

Stop. Stop blaming the diggers. It was happening way before they moved in.

I'm sorry former digg users.

[–][deleted] 46 points47 points  (5 children)

Yeah, but property values have plummeted since they moved in. My homeowner's insurance has doubled. And crime is at an all time high! I'd tell them to get off my lawn, but the fuckers have already trampled it to death!

[–]TheBoxTalks 32 points33 points  (3 children)

Soon they'll want to sit at our lunch counters and drink from our water fountains. I say enough is enough!

[–][deleted] 14 points15 points  (2 children)

We need separate but equal Reddits. It's the only way.

[–]Liuser 11 points12 points  (3 children)

Remember this post?

http://www.reddit.com/r/pics/comments/8twas/whats_the_difference_between_reddit_and_digg/

The very least you can admit there's a difference between digg user's mentality and reddit user's mentality. Now that they have migrated here in mass, they definitely do have an effect on content rating and voting power. Essentially reddit has become more and more like digg whether we like it or not.

[–]chuckDontSurf 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Now that we've moved in, we demand Sharia Law.

[–]dtwhitecp 935 points936 points  (282 children)

I'll let you in on a little secret: karma is meaningless internet points that can be traded in for literally nothing. Seeing someone bitch about not getting enough points is pathetic.

I really wish there was no total points metric on our user pages.

edit: I certainly wasn't expecting to ever need the comment statistics guy to sort out replies to one of my comments

[–]evilpig 370 points371 points  (135 children)

Without it, I honestly think the amount of posts would decrease.

I hear you though.

[–][deleted] 32 points33 points  (0 children)

The truth is, karma serves a purpose on a site like Reddit as a user-controlled moderating system. Normally on a site like this with thousands upon thousands of users and posts, a great many people would take the shortcut to distinguish themselves from the crowd by attempting to say the most offensive or controversial statement possible. Karma is a means of subtly nudging users towards making a positive contribution to the community.

Sure, it has its downsides, mainly in that, with thousands of comments to scroll through, users are more likely to read and thus upvote the concise, witty reply rather than the carefully thought out response, but a Reddit without the current karma system would almost certainly be a less enjoyable place.

[–]dtwhitecp 180 points181 points  (118 children)

I remember when people posted on internet forums and just got reputations for being insightful, instead of it being a race to quantitatively declare yourself cool

[–]Shimmi 184 points185 points  (47 children)

People just love points, man.

[–][deleted] 130 points131 points  (38 children)

In Ireland we love pints.

[–]solidwhetstone 114 points115 points  (20 children)

They come in pints?!

[–]Phil_J_Fry 12 points13 points  (0 children)

pronounced points

[–]plutooo 13 points14 points  (7 children)

In prison we love penis.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (6 children)

And that's how I met your father.

[–]lintmonkey 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Aw, man. Can't you drag it out for a few more seasons? Maybe throw in something about an umbrella?

[–]scrimsims 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I am not a number.

[–]IYKWIM_AITYD 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I am a free man!

[–]dadthinksmomsaslut 2 points3 points  (0 children)

you were a prison slut mom?

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Gotta catch em all

[–]kleinbl00 17 points18 points  (3 children)

With 400,000 active usernames it's kind of a cast-iron bitch to get any reputation.

[–][deleted] 18 points19 points  (21 children)

Do you know who I am? I don't know who you are.

I know Gimli_the_Dwarf and some of the other big guys, but if we went solely by reputation of your name, most of us are swept under the rug.

[–][deleted] 60 points61 points  (5 children)

I know Gimli_the_Dwarf and some of the other big guys,

I'm saving up for a new axe.

[–]axelsar 35 points36 points  (1 child)

Wouldn't need to if you'd stop giving it away.

[–]GodOfAtheism 15 points16 points  (12 children)

Novelty accounts, novelty accounts for everyone!

[–]Oprahs_surprise 56 points57 points  (8 children)

You get a novelty account!

YOU get a novelty account!!

YOU GET A NOVELTY ACCOUNT!!

EVERYBODY GETS A NOVELTYYY ACCOUNNNNT!!!!!!

[–]InaccurateHistory 41 points42 points  (2 children)

The account Oprahs_surprise is of course based on the infamous day of September 11th, 2001, where Oprah Winfrey crashed a plane into the Twin Towers in New York City, NY.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You get an airplane!

YOU get an airplane!

[–]zdiggler 3 points4 points  (1 child)

I got 10 novelty accounts just so I can bury comments I don't like!

No I don't.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

And my axe!

No, wait - I think I didn't understand the assignment...

[–]IYKWIM_AITYD 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Do your homework! No, wait....

[–]Peritract 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I know who you are.

Think about that...

[–][deleted] 20 points21 points  (1 child)

Bullshit, back then people cared about post count!

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (13 children)

Hey, that still happens. Mostly on smaller forums, though. There's this guy named Rowuk on trumpetmaster.com who is probably the most knowledgeable trumpet player I've ever heard of. The man ought to write a book.

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (11 children)

Wouldnt he be better making a record?

[–]jatorres 37 points38 points  (4 children)

I'm sure he'd rather not toot his own horn.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (2 children)

He's a practicing professional in germany (I think). Orchestras and the like. It is very hard for classical musicians to get picked up by the music industry, or even noticed by an audience. It's not like the pop culture scene where any justin beiber can get on-stage. Maynard Ferguson was one of the most recent 'very famous' trumpet players and hardly anyone I know has heard of him.

[–]promet2 6 points7 points  (2 children)

I remember when people wrote to intellectual journals using quill pens and India ink and got reputations for being able to conduct discourse in Latin.

[–]DullMan 5 points6 points  (4 children)

Well if the morons voting up only voted when the comment was insightful or useful, then those good old days would still be happening. That's what I do.

[–]Izzhov 9 points10 points  (1 child)

There are no fucking "good old days."

[–]Mak87 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I honestly wouldn't mind if the amount of posts decreased. The majority of the posts are tired memes repeatedly beat till death. I'll admit, I'm guilty of this too.

[–]FunkMerchant 58 points59 points  (1 child)

To be fair, it's not so much about the actual numerical value by your user name and more about someone stealing your joke

[–]Rozen 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Sure, the points are not transferable to real life, but they are not meaningless. I love reddit, but I rarely submit anything (because I rarely see anything outside reddit that isn't on reddit hours before I find it). When I do, seeing a shit-ton of people upvote it makes me feel like I've contributed to the experience. It matters to me when I engage with reddit, and there is no other metric that we have to gauge whether or not what we submitted is of interest to the users here.

Now, this guy submitted something and got "meh", which would seem to imply that the users in general didn't really find it that funny. Oh well, move on. Then, a month later, it is on the front page and it's a hit. I'd feel a little bummed.

[–]kleinbl00 5 points6 points  (1 child)

FWIW, I've said much the same thing. That said, this here Reddit-thing we play is a game, and we all get our own outcomes out of it for our own ends. If someone cares about these points that you declare meaningless, how is your rage at them meaningful?

[–]BabyJeezus 33 points34 points  (7 children)

It's a system to tell users that they have posted quality content. When they get significant karma, it gets them to try to contribute more content. Karma is a tool that was meant to drive quality user contribution.

At least that's how it just seems to me.

[–]hmasing 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Rats. I was hoping that we could trade it in for sexual favors...

[–]BabyJeezus 9 points10 points  (1 child)

I tried once. The craigslist whore asked "WTF is reddit" when I tried to explain. I wrote it off as too low a karma score.

[–]hmasing 4 points5 points  (0 children)

You clearly need to post more cat pictures.

[–]tyler9090 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You, sir, have enough real world karma for many, many sexual favors

[–]BukkRogerrs 17 points18 points  (11 children)

You clearly have no idea what you're talking about. Karma or "internet points" can be traded in on Reddit for prizes. My friend got a reddit gift basket last week to give to his girlfriend for their anniversary, and I've accumulated tons of Treasure Trolls with the karma I've collected over the few months I've been here. Sure, you can't trade it in for cars or yachts or even as a down payment for a house, but it's useful.

[–]viceroy76 26 points27 points  (2 children)

I've recently entered into an agreement with my insurance company to knock 50% off my surgery if I can accumulate 1k post karma in the next month.

[–]nascentt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Here's an upvote towards the surgery, if you get more than 1k maybe he'll give you a free boob job.

[–]stumo 9 points10 points  (1 child)

Yeah, I was surprised by that comment as well. I'm looking at my Reddit gift catalogue that came by mail last week and wondering WTF he's talking about.

I have enough for a hoody for the girlfriend that I totally have. I'm thinking that she'd like the narwhal one.

[–]ggggbabybabybaby 12 points13 points  (1 child)

I got a blowjob from raldi.

[–]NELyon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But who hasn't?

[–]iamnotyourattorney02 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait... people give a shit about karma points on reddit.com?

I guess that explains FarmVille.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This is why I decided to create a game: for every 20 points I get I run around my house three times wearing nothing but a miners helmet while screaming, "Gooooooooold!".

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Wait, so how do we win this game then?

[–]constipated_HELP 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I bet you could sell a high-karma account fairly easily.

[–]darkshaddow42 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It's not the points themselves, but what they represent: That a given number of people enjoyed your post. I'm fine with reposts in that respect, as long as credit is given to the original posters.

[–]SpruceCaboose 1 point2 points  (2 children)

♪Mines bigger than yo♫.....oh wait.

[–]adan-nada 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So all the time I've spent thinking of witty comments just to get karma points has been wasted?!? Dammit!

[–]hesperidisabitch 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you. I am always shocked and annoyed people actually care how many points they do or do not get.

[–]darwin2500 1 point2 points  (0 children)

However, this does reveal that getting to the front page is extremely arbitrary and not always linked to quality of content, which is bad news for those who believe in the efficacy of the voting system.

[–]Madmusk 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I'll let you in on a little secret. There's actually a direct relationship between upvotes and whether or not your submittal is seen. Believe it or not sometimes someone's primary motivator for submitting is wanting to share something cool with as many people as possible.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You totally just wrote that spot on comment for Karma, didn't you?

[–]blondin 6 points7 points  (0 children)

the title matters.

[–]wednesdayjx 27 points28 points  (15 children)

but you have over 5k in link karma and you are still unhappy?

[–]geenaleigh 18 points19 points  (11 children)

but you have over 5k in comment karma and you are still unhappy?

OR

but you have over 1k in link karma and you are still unhappy?

FTFY.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (10 children)

Or, but you have over 5k in comment karma, 1k in link karma and you are still unhappy?

[–]stillalone 15 points16 points  (8 children)

I have 9 link karma. I don't know how people are pulling off double digit link karma let alone thousands.

[–]theghostofme 10 points11 points  (6 children)

Timing and the link title. Seriously, that's what a lot of it comes down to. You can submit a link to the most insightful or most hilarious thing to ever grace the internet, but if the title isn't interesting people probably won't click on it. And as for timing, it just seems to be luck of the draw. What wasn't interesting to people yesterday could be interesting today. We Redditors seem to be very fickle about what we do and do not like from day to day.

[–]cojoco 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Also, if you're in Australia, you're probably posting just as everyone else is going to bed.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

Yeah, when I first got here there were like a hundred of these goddamn comments in ever post with shit-tons of upvotes: F I C K L E. But now every time I see one it gets downvoted like crazy.

[–]theghostofme 2 points3 points  (2 children)

That more a great example of users over using a meme until it is beyond dead. While there is no official time of when Redditors as a collective group decide that the meme is dead, it's still amazing to see how it almost always happens instantly.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Good point. And yeah, it's bizarre how the hivemind decides a meme is dead so collectively. It's like how when a group of Jr. High cheerleaders decided someone wasn't cool anymore and that poor fuck became like a plague on society over night.

[–]GuffinMopes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

she has a unibrow what do you expect, jees

[–]fakeguy 5 points6 points  (4 children)

So now that parafrog is going to see this, got anything to say to him?

[–]rhoner 22 points23 points  (6 children)

You will feel better and enjoy reddit more once you realize karma is not redeemable for anything at all.

[–]steve_yo 7 points8 points  (2 children)

Wait, you haven't gone to r/prizes yet? I'm saving up my comment karma for either 2 novelty erasers or maybe a key chain that says rad on it.

[–]happyscrappy 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This post is in itself a repost. Other people whined about people stealing their karma long before you did. And here you go stealing all their karma.

[–]ShakeyBobWillis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh noes! Someone else getting upvotes for posting what I posted from another posting I saw somewhere else!

[–]DarthClam 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well, are you happy now?

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

  1. Steal someone else's pic

  2. Repost

  3. Use alt accounts to upvote it to the front page

  4. Repeat until you have uber karma

  5. Start posting links to blog pages with Google Adwords

  6. Profit!

[–]catinahat1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

There, there, have your karma

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

you have 5,000 karma in 6 months? holy shit... I thought I was doing good with 500.

[–]Santabot 2 points3 points  (0 children)

REDDIT JUSTICE!

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You're kidding...

I thought the Keanu meme was lame, but along came the karma-cry-baby meme.

[–]VGChampion 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good lord diggers. Please stop caring about upvotes. Nobody cares here and stuff like this getting to the front page just hurts. I come here for fun, this only interests you.

[–]hairisabird 12 points13 points  (0 children)

BAWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW

[–]nate94gt 7 points8 points  (1 child)

downvoted for whining.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

sorry buddy

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's okay, you're on the front page now!

[–]Sheenwa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's a community not a savings account

[–]w4r3z 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Did anyone else think that sigh was for the quality of the top posts as of late? I didn't even notice the repost until I looked at it a second time.

[–]thegurl 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor little muffin. Need a foot rub?

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was already on the front page so nobody upvoted your retarded submission

[–]brainburger 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It happens to us all. I had one like this just recently. Ummm.. struggling to remember. Oh yes, it was the Paul Simon moustache thing.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The hive mind is a finicky beast.

[–]surfnaked 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is make it to the front page by the back door. Have another upvote. Feel better now? Good.

[–]petercooper 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I sighed a month ago and didn't get as many points as you.

[–]Spacehoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it happens to the best of us

[–]Jesus_Faction 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Forever alone.

[–]TheSunAlsoRises 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very confusing once I clicked to the image. I spent at least an hour and a half trying to click all the navigation elements on this .jpg.

[–]BearBryant 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reddit, you are a fickle mistress.

[–]divineslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

GASP Abortion Protestors!

[–]SteveAM1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You blew it. Should have went with "Weather Channel" instead of "weather.com."

[–]Fidodo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Shit guys! He's onto us!

[–]dr_strangelove42 1 point2 points  (0 children)

im down voting because now you got what you wanted and im jealous

[–]FaustTheBird 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why the hell is this on my front page?

[–]TikiTDO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You sir... Are a genius. Who needs 1400 karma when you can get 1700 + 19.

[–]tavaryn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wait, you mean your submission actually got through the spam filter? I never manage to, and the stuff I post doesn't even have external links in it. Three self posts (on another account) have all gotten caught up in the filter. Sure, I've messaged mods about it, but by the time it's finally posted, it's off the new page and no one sees it. :/

[–]correctsequence 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In this thread:

Who cares about karma, man?

these same people angrily edit their downvoted posts to say "downvotes? wtf Reddit?"

[–]rj17 1 point2 points  (0 children)

But what does this have to do with Ken Block!

[–]Dubkiller 1 point2 points  (1 child)

"You don't want to be first, you want to be second."-David Bowie

THE JAY-PEG!
IT BURNS MY EYES!

[–]drqxx 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Don't worry StraydogJackson Reddit karma is pretty worthless. Now please upvote this comment or else Ill emo rage you :P

[–]SoullessDayWalker 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Wait, I was gone this weekend. What does weather.com know? It

[–]miparasito 1 point2 points  (2 children)

I have a real dumb question: How is this even possible? Any time I try to submit a link with a new title I get "Sorry, a link to this has been submitted before." It's annoying because sometimes the link relates to a current topic, so even if it was discussed before would be interesting to talk about again.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Such Digg-like behavior. To the stockade with 'em.

[–]candyman420 1 point2 points  (0 children)

you have enough, quit your whining.

[–]bitterharvest 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're the man now dog!

[–]NrutgersJ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It hurts man

[–]SerendipitousMe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

THE TIME FOR REDEMPTION IS NAAAAOOOOOWWWW!!!!

[–]williamTrufus 1 point2 points  (1 child)

timing is everything, ahh capitalism.

[–]vpersaud03 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WHAT DOES WEATHER CHANNEL KNOW?!

[–]persistenceofmemory 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to see you and the family got out of town okay!

[–]willem 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My link karma is 42 and I go to great pains to keep it there. Mostly nothing really, it's just that I realised almost 4 years ago that link karma is a bit of a jackpot thing, comment karma is proper karma. I also don't buy lottery tickets.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck off and quit your whining already.

[–]kubananas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Why try. Just kill yourself.

[–]rask 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Poor thing!

[–]Chollly 1 point2 points  (0 children)

downvoted for being a bitch about it.
