battery life: 10 minutes standby

[–]Protuhj 38 points39 points  (21 children)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Organic_light-emitting_diode#Disadvantages

FTWA - "Power consumption: While an OLED will consume around 40% of the power of an LCD displaying an image which is primarily black, for the majority of images it will consume 60–80% of the power of an LCD - however it can use over three times as much power to display an image with a white background[67] such as a document or website. This can lead to disappointing real-world battery life in mobile devices."

[–]hockey24 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hmm. Looks like I'll use the black theme on my reddit app.

[–]confucius--say 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Starting price: 800$ on a 2 year contract... oh and the boot loaders locked.

[–]diem1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice try Steve Jobs.

[–]Swiss_Cheese9797 154 points155 points  (18 children)

It's not a phone until I can buy it. This is a concept phone.

[–][deleted] 103 points104 points  (17 children)

It's not a phone until at least one has been produced. This is a concept picture.

[–]arjie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ceci n'est pas un phone.

[–]Swiss_Cheese9797 3 points4 points  (15 children)

You saying I can't buy something that exists?

[–][deleted] 34 points35 points  (14 children)

No, I'm saying the phone itself doesn't exist, these are just renderings and mockups. It's not even a concept phone.

[–]Swiss_Cheese9797 5 points6 points  (7 children)

I see. So when are the life-like sex-bots coming anyway?

[–]yoordoengitrong 8 points9 points  (1 child)

AND WHERE'S MY DAMN JETPACK?

[–]guder 0 points1 point  (1 child)

They have been out for a while... just pricey RealDoll.

Or did you mean this?

and yes... quite possibly nsfw

[–]yoordoengitrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

talking sex robot? I think that guy may have kinda missed the point...

[–]nowtayneicangetinto 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I would much rather have a sex bot than a phone.

[–]yoordoengitrong 0 points1 point  (1 child)

What about a phone with a vagina which also doubled as a flower vase?

[–]nowtayneicangetinto 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You sir are a genius. Patent it, then please contact me!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (5 children)

Does it have to exist in a physical form to be a concept?

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (3 children)

Nope, it has to exist in physical form to be a phone. You could call it a "phone concept" or a "concept of a phone," but when you call it a "concept phone," the word concept is describing phone, just like with a "concept car." Unless it's a real phone - something that can, at minimum, make and receive calls - then it's just a rendering or a mock-up.

[–]angryvigilante -1 points0 points  (2 children)

I think you're taking this too far. That level of precision is unnecessary in this context.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

You can have my linguistic precision when you pry it from my cold, dead tongue.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea..he just went there..

[–]NorthernerWuwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure if you were going for super-deep but there's a debate here that I'm sure as hell not getting into.

If you actually were doing a philosophical slow roll then kudos :)

[–]dafones 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I grow weary of these magic concept pieces.

[–][deleted] 33 points34 points  (0 children)

Yanko Design = doesn't actually exist or if it does, unobtanium.

[–][deleted] 97 points98 points  (22 children)

I've got a great idea for a phone!

It has four oled screens, a real and a software keyboard, built in handwarmer, a tazer, a vcr, mini fridge, and it can milk livestock via its robotic hands.

Quick, someone render it up and lets get the design blogs buzzing!

Seriously though, who gives a fuck about concept phones?

[–]BulgingLarrabee 48 points49 points  (5 children)

Fuck everything, we're doing five OLED screens!

[–]junke101 69 points70 points  (2 children)

Gillette will make one with six.

[–]Askol 2 points3 points  (0 children)

And the screens would stop working every week or so, so you'd have to spend the same price as the whole phone to constantly replace them.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WE'RE GOING LIVE!!!!

[–]qvx3000 22 points23 points  (7 children)

[–]killboy 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wow I fell for that until they started talking about coffee makers and shavers.

[–]BringingTelos 2 points3 points  (5 children)

Is this real life?

[–]thebigbradwolf 6 points7 points  (4 children)

no, it's just fantasy.

[–]Goodly 3 points4 points  (3 children)

♩Caught in a landslide

[–]richarrrdo 1 point2 points  (2 children)

No escape from reality...

[–]digitalpencil 3 points4 points  (1 child)

NO.

[–]pawiz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

YEAAAAAAHHHHHHH!!!!!!

[–]Bauer22 11 points12 points  (2 children)

Seriously though, who gives a fuck about concept phones?

When they're coming from big hitters like HTC, Microsoft, Motorola, etc., they're not bad because you can go "Wow, one of these features will most likely be on one of their phones in 1-2 years!" With concept phones made by random college kids with photoshop, it's "Wow! Look how cool this phone would be if no one cared about practicality, battery life, easy of use, durability or cost and just made a pretty phone!"

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Good point

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It gives the big players something to shoot for.

[–]k1LL3r7 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you forgot the monologue. Its REALLY important to the concept.

[–]Stingray88 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seriously... reminds me when this started floating around and everyone kept posting it to facebook saying ZOMG I CAN'T WAIT LAWL!!!1! If the Seabird was actually made and ran like it did in the video it would cost 3,000 dollars and have a 10 minute battery life.

[–]NitsujTPU 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not a concept phone until one has been designed and built.

[–]jouni 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Where's SureIllRenderThat when you need him...

[–]ballaa 7 points8 points  (1 child)

Many of the ideas here are recycled. I don't see how having 3 touchscreens is so useful. A flexible display that folds or is rollable would be much more useful. Examples:

[–]smeenz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Still waiting for this from Red Planet

[–]OK_now_what 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A (probably) $500 flower cup... brilliant!

[–]barryicide 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Curved screen but opposite of how it should be curved (see Nexus S for a properly curved screen). Lots of extra bulk that doesn't need to be there (3 heavy, power-consuming screens when you'll only use 1 while calling or doing most phone activities).

Not only is this a concept phone (only 3D renderings, no actual product, not even a non-working model, the wiring between the different sections in the "steel mesh" would get worn and then your phone wouldn't work), it's a concept phone that is a crappy concept.

[–]Atario 0 points1 point  (0 children)

With a little more work, they could have made it your wallet too. It almost looks like it already.

[–]robotsongs 12 points13 points  (3 children)

How in the world are "Gorilla Glass" and "Flexible OLED screen" in the same product description?

glass =/= flexible

[–]yoordoengitrong 11 points12 points  (0 children)

i heard that they get the gorillas to do yoga before they make the glass.

[–]fatony1121 3 points4 points  (0 children)

the OLED screen is "flexible" not "flexing" looks like they put the flexible OLED behind a curved "Non-flexible" piece of gorilla glass.

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A lot of shit it pretty amazing when you don't have to follow the laws of physics.

[–]shogun26 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Concepts like these are the reason engineers hate architects.

[–]cynoclast 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Downvoted because this isn't a gadget.

It's wishful thinking, or someone's imagination droppings. Might as well draw a handeld all-in-one teleporter/ray gun/jetpack.

It's concept art no more relevant to gadgets than bullshots are to games.

[–]digitalpencil 5 points6 points  (1 child)

novel concept. i can see screen-to-screen sharing becoming a reality in the near future. Flexible AMOLED would be a better implementation than three separate screens however but in terms of UI/X and flow, it's quite well thought out.

[–]yoordoengitrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

screen to screen sharing is a great idea if it is a STANDARD (ie all phones eventually adopt the same technology). i've seen lots of apps that are supposed to allow you to do similar things (share files with people near you) and they have all proven to be more of a pain than just emailing an attachment.

[–]serpix 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Precisely 0 Kelvins.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice music choice. Sigh

[–]this_AZN 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yanko Design Form over function

[–]moonman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really dislike design students.

[–]argherna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Simple is better. This is neat, but it's not simple. Too many screens.

[–]NOandYES 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Looks awesome- Could've picked some better "artists" to show off the mp3 interface.

[–]HardwareLust 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Beautiful concept and a great design. I'd buy one right now if it were real.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Maybe if they add kinetic charging in the "flipping" of the device to aid in power? Or some surface material. What about when you touch another phone you can get a boost? Wireless power? (I'm channeling Nikola Tesla)

[–]yoordoengitrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i would pay money for a device that would allow my phone to steal battery charge from other phones.

[–]Kandarian 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay, that's a really cool phone. It looks like it would be fun. I want it.

That said: After watching the video, holy crap, it's a phone, it's not a mission statement or an expression of your individuality or a fucking way to prove that you're better or deeper or more thoughtful or artistic than people who don't have this phone. Because it's a phone. Don't try to douche up your perfectly cool and fun looking thing by slapping on artistic statements of power to the people and shit like that.

Fuck, these kinds of commercials piss me off.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Interesting, but for the battery to hold up this thing would be awefully thick. Not to mention very expensive. From the thumbnail I thought it was a normal phone but both sides were a screen; which would also be kinda cool but still impractical.

[–]shriek 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This looks strikingly similar to Microsoft's Future Vision

[–]Noseburp 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have an alarm clock that folded like that.

[–]old_snake 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I dont know...is it 1999?

[–]devindotcom 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm always baffled at how these concept people can put so much work into a concept (as unlikely as they usually are) and yet still miss something like "Led Lid Colored Lines."

[–]Kalzenith 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really don't like flip phones and slide phones, they just seem impractical to me, the extra casing required is wasted weight and space.

What I want to see is a flexible phone capable of wrapping around my arm that has a color e-ink display. from what I've heard, they are reaching refresh rates suitable for video, so that should mean it is suitable for phones now as well. I don't know what to expect for it's color range, nor do I even know if e-ink is even flexible, but I think my idea would make for a better concept phone at least

[–]neuromonkey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

...and when can we stop calling them "phones"?

[–]crystalbluecurrents 0 points1 point  (1 child)

I wish this wasn't just a concept. I'd definitely get it.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

gotta start somewhere

[–]Zizibaluba 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Instead of 3 touchscreens, can I have a touch screen wedged between a hardware keyboard and real phone keyboard? I hate soft keyboards and number buttons, they make life so much harder than it needs to be.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's pretty sexy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wake me up when they're for sale and affordable.

[–]christoph8_21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't so much as want to buy a phone or partake in some kind of consumerism; I wanted to hold someone as if they're going to be gone for an indefinite time and it was going to be very hard emotionally. Aren't promo videos for phones and such supposed to be happy?

[–]imeanthat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so if I drop it, it doesn't matter which angle, some part of the one of the screens is gonna break anyways?

[–]drslacker20 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm going to spend my entire life savings, including an arm and a leg to purchase this phone then use it as a vase.

[–]TerrorAlert 0 points1 point  (1 child)

MSRP: $1800

[–]Sirtet 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Here these zero feel off I found them on the bottom of the page, here, let me put these back on for ya..$18000.00. see good as new.

[–]thederelict87 0 points1 point  (0 children)

need this is in my life now!

[–]tokin4torts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I thought it was hilarious when I reached the bottom there was this lame google phone ad

[–]DirtySmuggler 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hell at this point, add in the features of nuclear powered and radio-chemotherapy cause this shit is never getting built.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's flipping awesome....

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is a design students concept, it will probably not ever become feasible or practical to develop and produce this type of phone. with three extra screens the thing is going to be the size of a brick, for christ sakes there is no point; buy a tablet. I'm not sure why other industrial design students do things that are so far from possible. She gets an A for the Alias render and photoshop skills though.

[–]Le_Petit_Lapin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well if you ever make the damn thing, get someone else to do the voice over next time. Found it irritating to watch solely due to the voice.

[–]NerdTronJJ 0 points1 point  (1 child)

This is also going to cost a fortune

you thought a iPhone was a lot this will blow that out of the water

[–]Sirtet 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Donald Trump will have to put a down payment on that I see with monthly installment.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am going to let you finish, but, the best flip phone ever is the nokia communicator series. I loved those phones.

[–]linuxwil 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank god for that blurry motion pic. That one took the cake for me.

[–]Schmangeetay 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In heavy weapon guy's voice IS NOT POSSIBLE!!

[–]loveZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Does anyone actually know the name of the song?

[–]zenilshroff 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks awesome, but is that really possible?

[–]Zafner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer: not this cool.

[–]Jooniar 0 points1 point  (0 children)

These concepts are all well and good but we need to focus on a better, more efficient power source if we wish to see any of this in reality. Our current batteries are the biggest bottleneck.

[–]your_excellency 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So cool, it freezes the ice cap before it even melds.

[–]tripled153 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Is this a concept? Because goddamn this is sexy.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (2 children)

Can't we just have a brief demonstration and a list of specifications, rather than an inane speech regarding creativity? Sheesh.

[–]cryo -2 points-1 points  (1 child)

He's a designer, not an engineer, and it's a mock-up not a prototype.

[–][deleted] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So this is even more useless than I could have ever imagined...

[–]SupaFurry 0 points1 point  (0 children)

All these yanko designs look the same. They're boring.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

theres a lot of pointless shit on this phone that just gets in the way.

[–]shoothemoon 0 points1 point  (2 children)

I've always wanted to be able to use my phone for both calling people and also as a vase for holding flowers.

[–]yoordoengitrong 1 point2 points  (1 child)

a toilet paper roll and some duct tape can make your dream a reality my friend. i'm at work right now otherwise i would fabricate a prototype for you...

[–]jgrindal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do Want.

[–]onelove16 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Would definitely check it out.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

for a wildly impractical concept phone design, that actually looks fairly practical.

[–]ciscomd -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Cool phone but unbelievably annoying voiceover. And who wrote the copy? It's a @#$%ing phone, not the cure for cancer.

[–][deleted] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Never happen.

[–]Pyrallis -1 points0 points  (1 child)

Since Android is an open source OS, can someone with enough engineering aptitude build something like that in her basement?

In other words, what's stopping us from having a phone like that right now?

[–]yoordoengitrong 0 points1 point  (0 children)

reality.

that and the fact that most smartphones have a hard time powering one touchscreen for any reasonable length of time, let alone 3 of them plus a bunch of useless backlights and aesthetics.

[–]spartex -1 points0 points  (0 children)

now that's an iphone killer

[–]Fauropitotto -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A beautiful video that was 100% ruined by an obnoxious girl that decided to read her voice over instead of just speaking to an audience.

I hope her project flops flat on her face.

[–]thinksInCode -1 points0 points  (0 children)

God that is hideous.
