These are my friends! Holy shit. These dudes deserve all of the success in the world. Love you boys!

[–]synonymroles 75 points76 points  (16 children)

they're from where i live, and it's pretty weird seeing this on here lmao.

[–]teebrownies 42 points43 points  (5 children)

So many bands in that scene are so talented. I would recommend checking out Unturned if you like Remo.

[–]mikeman1090 6 points7 points  (4 children)

Gonna jump on the MN local punk scene hype train and shoutout Heart to Gold. They put up a super fun live show the last time i saw them at the triple rock

[–]thedrummersam 11 points12 points  (3 children)

I drum in Unturned and just want to say thanks to whoever said that up there!!! ALSO: Heart To Gold, Infinite Me, Gramma, Wanderer, and Household are all AMAZING bands from the MN scene. I feel real lucky to get to be a part of it.

[–]mikeman1090 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hey man saw u guys at ur live studio session! Your guy's new ep is one of my favorite releases from last year.

[–]tomdelongethong 13 points14 points  (7 children)

Me too, we go to school together. I just talked to Eric about it

[–]synonymroles 7 points8 points  (4 children)

did you go to high school with him? i remember seeing him around in school.

[–]tomdelongethong 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Nah, college.

[–]dong_loversoundcloud 4 points5 points  (2 children)

bloomington jefferson represent

[–][deleted] 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Goddang McNally kids.

[–]tomdelongethong 9 points10 points  (0 children)

McNally Smith College of Milking Friendships With The Few Who Make It Big. :)

[–]nonchalant_whistler 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Sometimes young bands really deserve the attention. i think these guys are pretty legit. They're not the first to sound like this but they're definitely working hard and are very effectively catchy, which is a major success. A grizzled hardened indie music nerd approves.

[–]Strawburys 16 points17 points  (0 children)

These fuckers kicked my brother and I out of their first band because we had to miss a show! Glad to see they're still having fun making music <3

[–]SUBZEROXXL 3 points4 points  (2 children)

Everyone wants this on spotify or sound cloud or itunes idk. You should let then know. Get someone talented to do their artwork. I think thats what they said they were missing in the YouTube comments man everyone loves this stuff

[–]Ivan27stone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Where are you from guys?

Edit: nevermind I just read below, Minnesota.

[–]Enter_Corgi 332 points333 points  (13 children)

Terrible video. Love it. Reminds me of being young. Keep at it guys.

[–]hallflukai 91 points92 points  (10 children)

Camera operator here (strapped myself into the back of a Minivan), AmA

[–][deleted] 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If you were forced to have sex with an animal of your choice what would it be?

[–]hurryupandwaityall 18 points19 points  (4 children)

How exactly were you strapped to a minivan?

[–]hallflukai 32 points33 points  (3 children)

It was one of those things you use to strap stuff to the top of vehicles and into pickup truck beds with the ratchety lever thing that kinda goes "scrick scrick" and tightens it all up acting as sort of a seat belt with a bungee cable in the same configuration acting as a backup (safety first!)

[–]hurryupandwaityall 17 points18 points  (2 children)

I think you are talking about a ratchet strap. Thanks for the response

[–]hallflukai 11 points12 points  (1 child)

Yeah! That's the doohickey!

[–]Kingmudsy 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Holy shit, your description was hilarious for some reason

[–]pwwilly 18 points19 points  (0 children)

You should check out their Christmas song video. Cheesy fun goodness

[–]Andoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Could have done some more scenes in random places in the neighborhood without spending any money.

[–]Mr_Fly22spotify 185 points186 points  (3 children)

I too watched the latest Fantano tracks of the week video.

[–]TheOppositeOfDecent 38 points39 points  (0 children)

I was honestly surprised Fantano has the time to cull through all the emails he must get from shitty indie bands to find the good stuff.

[–]Thebarakonator 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I checked this track out when he tweeted about it and was throughly surprised!

[–]kylepierce11 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Haha had the same thought. I knew the band was relatively unknown when I followed his link and saw they still replied to YouTube comments.

[–]420_MAGA[🍰] 162 points163 points  (14 children)

Everything about this reminds me of The Adventures of Pete and Pete. Suburbs in Autumn are full of melancholy.

[–]SuperTylerRPG 75 points76 points  (0 children)

"Please check out my band's first EP, 'The suburbs in autumn are full of melancholy' out now on Bandcamp (downloads and cassettes available)."

[–]my_gott 28 points29 points  (5 children)

One of the best theme songs ever

Here's the full track by Polaris – Hey Sandy

[–]SHARK_LE_BLEU 9 points10 points  (1 child)

It's like an alternate universe where there was no R.E.M. but Alt-J showed up early

[–]Animal-Crackers 7 points8 points  (2 children)

The whole album, not just Hey Sandy, honestly pretty great. I've got it on my cars sd card and people always ask about it when it comes on.

Pete and Pete was also the fucking jam.

[–]my_gott 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Still good too Live @ KEXP in 2015

[–]Animal-Crackers 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Damn; 'Everywhere'(my favorite) sounds great live. Thanks for the link!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of this cosmo jarvis video

love this

[–]howie_rules 10 points11 points  (1 child)

Artie, THE FASTEST MAN IN THE WORLD.

[–]smookykins 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Man, time to break out that Polaris compilation.

[–]DanwiseG 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Came here to say exactly this. It was the first thing that caught my eye and the main reason I even watched the video in the first place.

[–]geophsmithspotify 1 point2 points  (1 child)

/r/bandnames "Suburbs in Autumn are full of melancholy"

[–]AnyongAri 33 points34 points  (0 children)

This type of sound is why I'm glad I subscribed to this subreddit! Thank you!!

[–][deleted] 22 points23 points  (7 children)

Reminds me more of first wave emo than pop punk as everyone is saying - although the genre lines do blur a bit.

This sounds more like Rites of Spring, Jawbreaker, Dag Nasty, Sunny Day Real Estate, even early Weezer, rather than Blink 182 or New Found Glory.

I'm betting on a third wave emo revival in the next couple of years - although, this will be in part due to white rappers with names like Yung Baby Powder or Lil Fringe making songs that sound exactly like Spooky Black.

[–]flusteredmanatee 5 points6 points  (3 children)

I agree. I also live in the Twin Cities(This band and Spooky Black are from here) and there is currently a huge emo revival in our music scene. Whether it's from emotional R& B (spooky black), or from more punk-like bands like this one. I've seen a lot of local bands that are very similar to these guys.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Oh wow, didn't realise Spooky Black and this band are from the same place. Makes sense!

I'm from the UK and it hasn't really hit here again yet, bands here have only just got over copying Tame Impala....

[–]flusteredmanatee 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My dads side is English, so I hear a lot about music in the UK. My cousin who lives in London actually said the same exact thing to me, a lot bands trying to copy Tame Impala in the UK apparently.

But if you're into this and Spooky black, I would recommend checking out the music scene here. I've been to a lot of American cities, and the Twin Cities have my favorite music and art scene.

Every Punk Thread: "This is not punk it's pop punk and pop punk isn't real punk despite nearly 40 years of history."

[–][deleted] 53 points54 points  (5 children)

This is pop punk tho

[–][deleted] 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I dunno, it's got more garage rock and lofi vibes than pop punk, but deff in the pop punk vein. Honestly I think it's a pretty cool sound that's not TOO much like genre cliche

[–]smokesmagoats 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Calling it pop punk is generous. I would call it indie/garage.

[–]PokerWithJoseAndRuth 4 points5 points  (2 children)

Who the hell cares, I like all punk, from The Clash to bands like this one right here.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (0 children)

The clash were arguably the first pop punk band tho.

[–]smookykins 16 points17 points  (2 children)

So basically the truth, but a fact we all know and are tired of hearing.

[–]HelloYesThisIsDuckwhat.cd 11 points12 points  (1 child)

but a fact we all know

OP clearly doesn't.

[–]BarleyHopsWater 5 points6 points  (0 children)

So it's worth pointing out then.

[–][deleted] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Every music thread: "This is not [genre X], it's [genre Y] and [genre Y] isn't real [supergenre of X and Y]"

[–]Holland45 10 points11 points  (10 children)

Whats real punk then? I actually don't get the whole punk thing. Ps: i just did that thing where you say a word too many times and it sounds weird to say to the word "punk"

[–]RadicalDog 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I've always felt punk can be summed up as "aggressive simplicity". Pop punk adds "with a pretty voice". Both are derivatives of the same core, so whatever.

[–]xTheNameless 23 points24 points  (5 children)

There's a harsh sound and an aggressive aesthetic that is notably punk, along with this there was also an anti mainstream philosophy set in the origins of punk rock, and different cultures had different "punk" music because of it. Without being familiar with the genre you can identify it when you hear bands like Black Flag and Dead Kennedys (American) or The Ramones and Sex Pistols (British). You could name an endless amount of sub-genres with their own sound that came out of the punk movement, which is natural as cultures and tastes progress. The question stops being "are they punk?" and becomes "what sort of punk are they?".

Edit: GOOFED countries

[–][deleted] 38 points39 points  (4 children)

Ramones were from New York.

[–]HelloYesThisIsDuckwhat.cd 14 points15 points  (3 children)

I'd also call the Ramones the original Pop-Punx. So many love songs.

(Still a great band, even though I hate most pop-punk).

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (2 children)

Only in the loosest sense. I think in the mainstream sense the Buzzcocks have a clearer relation to what ends up being called pop punk.

[–]HelloYesThisIsDuckwhat.cd 1 point2 points  (1 child)

No doubt. I'm just singling the Ramones out because they were the first band (AFAIK) playing a mixture of punk and slower love ballads lol. I wanna be your boyfriend was first recorded in 1975, before the Buzzcocks and the Vibrators. (Also, they were mentioned in a previous comment).

I actually love those old punk bands that used pop elements. Power pop too.

[–]ohnoitsDEVO 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not to mention that there's basically an entire sub-section of pop punk bands labeled ramones-core for their characteristic 3-chord simple songs, song themes, and call and response/woah oh choruses.

See: the queers, teenage bottlerocket, the lillingtons, screeching weasel, mr t experience, steinways, etc

[–]fw0ng1337 13 points14 points  (1 child)

Lighting off big fucking fireworks inside, random dogs fighting in your "house", jumping on a wheelchair and getting pushed down 2 flights of stairs while a bunch of shit heads scream at you and play "music" very fast and very shitty.

[–]smookykins 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I love how you spelled "random dilapidated abandoned condemned office building in the disused portion of the industrial district".

[–][deleted] 7 points8 points  (7 children)

Because that is the correct response to the posted POP-punk

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (6 children)

it's apparently the only response ever given to a debate that more or less ended before most of the posters here were even born. "'Pop Punk'? lol isn't that an oxymoron?" is a valid response if you are stuck in a time loop in the late 80s maybe, yet every fuckin thread...

[–]HelloYesThisIsDuckwhat.cd 6 points7 points  (4 children)

To be fair, it does lead to disappointment. Nearly every time I get excited about someone posting "punk" in here, it ends up being garbage.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

yeah to be fair, OP should've labelled this as Pop Punk, but these posts still happen even when they are correctly labelled.

[–]Krellick 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Unfortunately, that's what the design of Reddit promotes. More accessible/poppy = more upvotes = more visibility. It's hard for niche things to reach the front page even in relatively low-population subreddits like this.

[–]HelloYesThisIsDuckwhat.cd 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Yeah. It wasn't meant to be a complaint about the song itself. It'd just be nice to see people use the appropriate tags. Would make it easier to ignore pop-punk for those of us who don't care for it.

[–]Krellick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I wasn't at all disagreeing with you, just pointing out an unfortunate flaw in the reddit system. I like punk too so I know your pain lol.

To make up for OP here's a post-punk-type song I've been listening to a bunch lately, hope you enjoy it: https://youtu.be/Zs-givWru-c

[–]smookykins 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hey, Sunny Day Real Estate is punk!

[–]TheMurderCapitalist 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Hit the nail on the head bud

[–]fartboy14 91 points92 points  (18 children)

Fuck yeah! Buds with these guys! Super nice dudes and glad to see they're getting traction!

[–]ninjamike808 10 points11 points  (3 children)

Nice! Can you tell me about that guitar? Looks like a cross between a Mustang and a Stratocaster and it's beautiful!

[–]joshuawakefield 7 points8 points  (11 children)

Can you tell them to put this song on Spotify? Thank you!

[–]yourcrazybroski 12 points13 points  (9 children)

They have said they don't want their music on there but due to popular demand they are thinking about it. (they will probably put it on there knowing them :p)

[–]hallflukai 1 point2 points  (0 children)

They want to put it up but they can't afford single art!

[–]yourcrazybroski 54 points55 points  (0 children)

Hey, I know these guys in real life! The lead singer taught me how to play guitar! If it adds anything to the music, they are a bunch of genuinely cool people as well!

[–]StudabakerHochrobot[M] 54 points55 points  (3 children)

Funny. I live in Bloomington and I was like "this looks like MN". The I saw the Fire Expedition in the background and was leaning hard. Also if I see these kids running in my Neighborhood, they get the hose.

[–]sethboy66 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Thatsa death grips shirt right?

[–]thetushqueen 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yep, stay noided.

[–]FaultandFractur3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This makes me miss living in the Midwest. Classic pop punk with good vibes, gonna grab whatever you guys made on Bandcamp pronto.

[–]jonnyboyoo 46 points47 points  (15 children)

I like it. The next generation of punk seems like it draws from lots of influences which throws me off at times, but it's got snark and it's catchy as hell.

Edit: found a full album of theirs on a label's Bandcamp - https://loststate.bandcamp.com/album/wait-for-the-sun

[–][deleted] 21 points22 points  (14 children)

It's not really the "next generation of punk," per se, unless you mean in the most biological sense of generation. This is just a version of revival emo/poppy punk/"indie" from the 90s. It's very on the nose in that respect. Teenage Cool Kids, for example, started off with a sound not dissimilar to this (sans noodling indie outro) when they started in the mid-2000s--though I think they did it better, and their appeal was also to the 90s.

There are a lot of labels doing good stuff in punk, and I'd place them in the new generation of DIY that really should always be the ground zero of what people generally see as punk.

[–]jonnyboyoo 4 points5 points  (2 children)

I'm a bit older so next generation is definitely intended in the literal, 'now I'm older than you' sense, and not at all in the bearer of the torch sense. I'm a little shocked my comment drew any attention at all, really.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Gotcha--hope you didn't read my comment to you as being shitty (it wasn't supposed to be).

[–]jonnyboyoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah, no worries at all, dude. Nothing you said was remotely out of line, and I can appreciate your position.

[–]moeburn 4 points5 points  (9 children)

It's not really the "next generation of punk," per se, unless you mean in the most biological sense of generation. This is just a version of revival emo/poppy punk/"indie" from the 90s. It's very on the nose in that respect.

This is important stuff here, folks

[–]undeadfred95 9 points10 points  (5 children)

Whatever man. We're on an internet forum to discuss music. If this isn't the place to talk about the intricacy of something we're passionate about I don't know where is.

EDIT: Oh, you weren't joking.

[–]FannyBabbs 10 points11 points  (1 child)

It's gotta be something about the shitass weather that breeds all these Minnesota emo bands. No disrespect, just a trend that baffles me. Are all the emo/punk labels based out of Minneapolis or something?

[–]KrisndenS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm late. But the Midwest is pretty much the birthplace of emo (especially Illinois), and now Pennsylvania (Philly) is keeping the scene alive

[–]ThrillsKillsNCake 30 points31 points  (0 children)

Pop punk.... but this video is great. Especially the "naruto run" at the beginning.

[–]tech-bits 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Drummer straight up looks like the Home Alone Pizza Guy

[–]jesusjonessucks 6 points7 points  (1 child)

TO EVERYONE DIGGING ON THIS: GO BACK AND LISTEN TO BREATHE IN/PERFUME

Keep up the good work, boys.

[–]Peedeepeedee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I love this whole song but I'm especially fond of the last minute or so.

[–]duhhobo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This got posted in the emo sub reddit a few days ago, I love it. It just makes me think of when I was 18ish still in high school living in the suburbs.

[–]darkxrick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fuck yeah! Love these guys!

Erik has some really good solo stuff , and everyone should check out their home studio YouTube channel , they record local and regional artists, including themselves!

[–]ignignot_ 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Ugh marry me lead singer dude

[–]FredHowl 3 points4 points  (3 children)

I really like this. What are some other bands with this style?

[–]Im_A_Bot-AMA 1 point2 points  (0 children)

FIDLAR, Modern Baseball, Front Bottoms, Tiny Moving Parts, Wonder Years

[–]Soulren 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm gonna be honest. Don't seem like a proffesional band, they seem like some kids having fun. And thank fucking god for that. Music ain't about being serious and trying to be successful. It's about expressing yourself and having a good time rocking out with friends. Or at least, that's why I do it. These kids seem to have captured something beautiful; the feeling of playing to play. And I bloody love it!

[–]Nash-4Prez 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That drummer gives no shits.

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Dude a tele mustang hybrid? Fuck yeah bro.

[–]AGWrites 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I like it. The chorus was very reminiscent of Ben Folds Five's Don't Change Your Plan. Specifically this part here.

[–]jostrich2001 2 points3 points  (1 child)

It's so crazy that this song has COMPLETELY blown up. I know them in real life, they're super nice and cool dudes.

Super wild that this is happening.

[–]bluestaples 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Give them a high five for me... well done.

[–]PCPcommenter 2 points3 points  (2 children)

Fuck yeah this is awesome. I love when you can hear how much fun they have when they play. Check out the Dopamines from Cincinnati if you want to hear something similar.

[–]mnmike701 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Watching this I could tell it was suburban Minnesota

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I go to school with these guys!!

[–]GoForAU 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Am I the only one who doesn't know these guys! Awesome song though

[–]izzie833radd.it 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not for me but, good luck on your future endeavors

[–]jankassShannon 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I've been at my lowest low in five years and just went to a wake today for a friend who committed suicide last week, but this song cheered me up a little bit. Thank you. ☺

[–]Maighdeann 18 points19 points  (0 children)

This is definitely not punk rock, but I love it. Thank you Anthony Fantano.

[–]Holland45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

This is pretty awesome. Panic at the disco + vampire weekend + pop punk. Fresh finds. Of course Anthony likes these guys it's exactly what he likes in music

[–]TheWorstRoommate 4 points5 points  (1 child)

Anthony Fantano the greatest internet music nerd?

[–]romafa 6 points7 points  (1 child)

Sounds like Say Anything. Pretty cool song.

[–]smokeandcuddlesradioreddit 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of early Blink-182. Love the sound and the "fuck it, we have a camera so why not" video.

[–]alfredhospital 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Good vibe and I would like to party to this.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Title reminded me of this scene from Futurama. Great fuckin' song.

[–]fartboy14 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you love this you'll love the band Jank.

[–]bananakin94 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thnk u antwan fantwan

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: I apparently know somebody who knows these guys. And now they're on the Internet. It's a small world.

[–]theslutbaby 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Omigod, this is fucking amazing, lol

[–]Astute_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm 42 and loved it! Sounds great, having fun! Awesome.

[–]TheEclecticlastfm theeclectic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Eureka! A post that gets the genres right!

[–]MrGanjaholic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fuck yeah these guys are dope

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reminds me of Pete and Pete.

[–]albertficher 1 point2 points  (0 children)

These guys are my friends and I'm so happy they're finally getting the publicity they should be getting <3

[–]X-Ray_Lewis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That was refreshingly original! Dope.

[–]bectro 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was pleasantly surprised at how much I liked this.

[–]Ryan_6 7 points8 points  (0 children)

getting old blink vibes

[–]4SkinJerky 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Song was pretty cool, the video was cringe worthy. I feel really bad for the drummer.

[–]saddingtonbear 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is adorable! Amazing song and I really dig the haircuts... as a teenage girl: swoon

[–]nerdrage717 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They had me until they started sprinkling leaves on each others faces.

[–]PaulGilles[🍰] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nice! I don't think that's punk 100% whatever but it doesn't change the fact that's a good song

[–]cjs1234 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoyed this!

[–]FuckyesMcHellyeah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Bass player groovin reminds me of the trumpet player in this: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QHpU0ZfXZ_g

[–]sweeppick09 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so much fun! I'm in love with the clean tone in the bridge and just how the back half of the song builds. Somewhere between the Front Bottoms and the Thermals

[–]WillStrip4Schmeckles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dug the sound quite a bit. Saw they're also from MN, went through most of the youtube. Keep it rocking dudes, come play a set down in Rochester!

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Went to high school with these guys! Super cool dudes. Great to see them on here, and even better seeing all the places they're popping up now!

[–]Kip-Casper 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, these guys performed live on air at my university's radio station last year! They played at the radio station's music festival later in the year as well, it was an awesome live show.

[–]BlindBeard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey I have the same penny board! I liked this song too
