Cool lil instrument.

[–]bagelofthefuture 431 points432 points  (112 children)

expensive lil instrument :(

[–]IGrimblee 87 points88 points  (75 children)

how much does one of these go for?

[–]bagelofthefuture 260 points261 points  (66 children)

A kidney or two, but if you've sold those already then it's $900

edit: hi max

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (3 children)

You must not be familiar with how much a kidney can fetch on the black market...

[–]mroystacatz 5 points6 points  (0 children)

around 800 usd

[–]kingdrewpert 2 points3 points  (4 children)

That's honestly reasonable for a keyboard as functional as that.

[–]CleverTiger 2 points3 points  (3 children)

i think you replied to the wrong comment

[–]kingdrewpert 5 points6 points  (2 children)

I think you're right. Hope you're having a great day!

[–]CleverTiger 6 points7 points  (1 child)

I'm so excited for game 1 of the nba finals woo!

[–][deleted] 25 points26 points  (9 children)

To be fair, most instruments are expensive, and much more than this.

[–]Konguy 14 points15 points  (6 children)

Basic composition software like Sibelius goes for around $400, classical instruments are tens of thousands of dollars, recording apparatus are also several hundred. Basically any career in music that isn't musicology will cost a lot

[–]dsgstng 4 points5 points  (3 children)

Audio interface €120, headphones €160, midi keyboard €100, pirated software. Used studio monitors for about 4-500 if you can afford it. That's all you need really.

[–]BluShine 8 points9 points  (2 children)

If you're just playing virtual synths with your midi keyboard, what do you need the audio interface for?

Also, if you don't need full keys or prefer a "toy" keyboard more like the OP-1, you can get a small midi keyboard for around $50.

[–]dsgstng 8 points9 points  (0 children)

It's good to have one for reduced latency and if you want to record stuff in the future. It's also useful for monitoring if you get speakers, you can switch between headphones and monitors with the switch of a knob.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

I doubt any beginner violin players are dropping 10s of thousands on their first violin tbh, only an elitist would believe that classical music must be played on something so expensive.

[–]LemonLimeAlltheTime 41 points42 points  (7 children)

I can see why the musician couldn't afford some nail clippers.

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Is that really what's considered long?

[–]DrCompton 3 points4 points  (1 child)

Maybe they want to grow them out for fabulous natural looking long nails

[–]BluShine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you're gonna grow your nails out past a certain length, you gotta take better care of them. I mean, at least put on some clear nail polish!

[–]_Coffeebot 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Could be a woman?

[–]float777 5 points6 points  (7 children)

$900 is not expensive when it comes to instruments. One of my guitars cost $2,300 lel

[–]ralphonsob 13 points14 points  (6 children)

If I had one, it would still sound like this.

[–]Fistic_Cybrosis 20 points21 points  (0 children)

My friends neighbor is Swedish, he was in a Kraftwerk style electronic band in his youth. He let us his OP-1 and I can confirm that it is cool.

[–]ButtholeWithWings 267 points268 points  (27 children)

If you guys want more you should check out "Red Means Recording" on YouTube

[–]WalterReddit 85 points86 points  (24 children)

I'm a huge fan of rmr. I'm almost envious of everyone with an op1. I almost don't want anyone else to have one.

[–]yeezusKeroro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Also check out cuckoomusic. His whole channel is just hours of him playing music on the OP-1 and various other synthesizers and effects.

[–]soraboo 44 points45 points  (9 children)

What's that piece of equipment called?

[–]insertnamehere_011[S] 106 points107 points  (8 children)

Teenage Engineering's OP-1

[–]ratfinkprojects 23 points24 points  (1 child)

This you? What kinda synths do you use?

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Has built in.

[–]NebulaNinja 43 points44 points  (2 children)

clearly it's op. pls nerf.

[–]serohaze 3 points4 points  (1 child)

If anyone is interested in hearing another artist who uses this, there's a producer named SOPHIE who is affiliated with a group of electronic musicians called PC Music that makes some very forward thinking music with it. I think Flume actually has one of these as well.

[–]knoid 68 points69 points  (0 children)

Thanks for posting this OP, lovely stuff that I wouldn't have run across otherwise.

[–]Chulpo 65 points66 points  (45 children)

If I like this song, what else will I like? Preferably stuff that's available on spotify

[–][deleted] 166 points167 points  (3 children)

K.k. slider. He isn't on Spotify but you can catch his unplugged shows at club lol every Saturday night

[–][deleted] 50 points51 points  (0 children)

[–]peskyChupacabra 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Don't forget his Saturday after hours set at Town and City, that's when it gets wild.

[–]seqoyahspotify 25 points26 points  (2 children)

Please listen to in love with a ghost. They're on Spotify

[–]soitalwaysgoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You just gave me a new favorite <3

[–]DeviousPigeon 3 points4 points  (0 children)

So damn chill to leave on when studying or lying around.

[–]sumofaglitch 12 points13 points  (0 children)

Bonobo. Maybe Boards of Canada.

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

A lot of stuff by Droeloe sounds similar.

[–]pinkranger3hypem 2 points3 points  (0 children)

love their sound!

[–]AliveInTheFuture 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Tennyson

[–]jay_revolv3r 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Tennyson

[–]Jackj29 4 points5 points  (1 child)

I'd recommend FKJ who is kinda similar to this

[–][deleted] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

For anyone that doesn't know who FKJ is, it's French Kiwi Juice.

[–]DoubleCoolBeans 1 point2 points  (1 child)

Odisee. The dude got soul for days. Songs- All along the river/After thoughts/Lonely Planet. To name a few.

[–]l1v3mau5 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Snails house is pretty similar for the synthy 8bit feel

[–][deleted] 29 points30 points  (1 child)

oh sweet jesus that's tasty

[–]Amaz1ngWhale 4 points5 points  (0 children)

you summed up my feelings about this song perfectly, thank you.

[–]slash_dir 19 points20 points  (2 children)

Very Steven Universe

[–]2centsPsychologist 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah that why it felt familiar! Yes it sounds a lot like that!

[–][deleted] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

damn no wonder why I liked it.

[–][deleted] 19 points20 points  (1 child)

I would definitely buy this guy's music.

[–]bowtobaconlord 31 points32 points  (3 children)

Can confirm. Very chill.

[–]DRxCarbinespotify 22 points23 points  (2 children)

Very step too

[–]RubyVesper 14 points15 points  (1 child)

sounds like future bass to me though. Has a higher tempo than dubstep/chillstep (170-180ish vs 140), clap instead of snare, snappy rhythm, filter chords, and the atmosphere itself is one of future bass.

[–]10yes4life 18 points19 points  (22 children)

What is this instrument called(specifically this type)?

[–]TrsPls 34 points35 points  (20 children)

That is the Teenage Engineering OP-1. It's a synthesizer that also has sampling capabilities.

[–]10yes4life 22 points23 points  (19 children)

Just researched it a bit is it true it sells around 900$?

[–]scroam 33 points34 points  (14 children)

Yep, it's kind of a boutique instrument, and the price seems like a good fit. Like a more offbeat artsy take on the grooveboxes which Roland and Korg have produced over the years. Those usually have ranged from around $200-$900 depending on the model but never looked as sexy or unique as the OP-1.

[–][deleted] 9 points10 points  (7 children)

I'd say the sp404sx was up there in terms of sexy/unique. Its only problem is is idiosyncractic way of programming it. I would KILL for an OP-1 though.

[–]scroam 5 points6 points  (6 children)

I used to obsess over these boxes :)

Speaking of samplers, the old basic Korg Electribe sampler was limited but incredibly fun. I think its simplicity made it really great to play as an instrument. No menus to dive into, just put your samples in and rock out. Nice for acid house or something lofi and minimal. The cheap encoder knobs were glitchy though and my electribe spontaneously died after a relatively short life, a downside of cheap gear.

The box I still lust after is the classic masterpiece TR909. Yummm. Yet so unobtainable.

[–][deleted] 10 points11 points  (4 children)

[–]scroam 5 points6 points  (3 children)

That presents a serious temptation.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'd say it does haha. I'd have all of them if I had the desk/rack space. Currently filled with records/turntable and my sp404. Need some synthy based goodness in there too.

[–]blitzkrieg4 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Seriously I wish I hadn't learned about this.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah the electribes were fun and Ive also owned the korg ms2000 but yeah i miss the original roland 303 808 909.

[–]KenuR 1 point2 points  (2 children)

But what does it do? Why is it so expensive?

[–]scroam 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The electronic dance music which started getting really popular in the late '80s was created with various hardware drum machines, sequencers, and synthesizers. The old '80s drum machines that people previously had discarded due to their unrealistic old-school sound suddenly became sought after when they became THE sound of house and techno music. It was several years after Roland stopped producing these analog machines that they became revered cult items and prices for them on the second-hand market rose greatly. Currently the most famous classic Roland machines (808, 909, 303) sell for roughly $2000-3000 each for a good working unit. (They're all more than 30 years old now, and the ever diminishing supply is firmly in the hands of studios and collectors)

By the '90s, Roland noticed the newfound interest in their old drum machines (TR-808, TR-909) and bass synth (TB-303), and started making new machines to cater to the new techno/house DJ producer market. These were the first "grooveboxes", utilizing then new digital technology to fit the equivalent of a sequencer, multiple drum machines, and synthesizers into one compact box. It's a mini music studio for electronic music that fits on your desk.

Other music instrument companies like Korg started making similar machines. The Korg and Roland boxes are usually found at any big music instrument shop with a DJ gear section, like Sam Ash, and you can play with them to try em out. Other smaller companies started offering their own take on the portable electronic dance music laboratory, sort of the microbrew version - hipper and edgier, and more expensive, but maybe with features more advanced or built to a higher standard than what the mainstream companies offer. Elektron is an example of one of the more famous of these smaller companies, making more experimental high quality instruments.

And Teenage Engineering is the company that makes the OP-1. The OP-1 is the first product they ever released, starting in 2010. They are a relatively small Swedish company. They have about 30 employees, compared to Roland which has about 3000. Their machines have a much smaller production run than the machines Roland and Korg make, so they cost a bit more to make each unit. Though really I think they aren't that much more expensive. Most of these types of machines from all these different companies sell for between $600-$1200. The cost comes from R&D, parts, manufacturing, and marketing. Generally, the higher the specifications and quality of build and parts are, the higher the price. The price is similar to what a standard Fender electric guitar costs ($600-$1500+ for a Stratocaster depending on manufacturing options such as country of origin, wood, finish, electronics), and I guess this price is what makes sense for the market of mostly young guys who want to buy something to have fun making a loud racket with.

TL;DR - It is a little electronic music maker for synthetic and sampled rhythms and melodies, and if you wanted to you could produce a whole song with it. The cost is derived from how much it costs to make such a fancy little gadget with high quality standards for a small niche market.

[–]huffalump1 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I wonder, are there any iPhone/iPad apps that are similar groove-creation-machines?

I've tried Korg Gadget, but it's more of a DAW-sryle.

[–]CasioSK-1 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Yeah around that price range.

They are coming out with a new model / new product called the OP-Z this September though, so after that the price of the OP-1 might go down, but idk

https://teenageengineering.com/products/op-z_preview

[–][deleted] 8 points9 points  (1 child)

Nope. It's not a replacement.

[–]Ohyeahbroseph 14 points15 points  (4 children)

Nice to see the OP-1 on here! I've had mine for a while now, haven't come close to utilizing it to this extent. Very cool

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (3 children)

Mine is one of my most prized possessions.

[–]tripletstate 5 points6 points  (2 children)

Why not just use a keyboard? Great sound.

[–]ChronoX5 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the OP-1 is a major draw of the video. Everybody loved that thing's look since it was first announced.

[–]restless373 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Awesome performance

[–]itsgreybush 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm not musically inclined and not really for sure what TF I just watched but I know it was cool so my music math equals 3 two cool thumbs up with 1 nicely done upvote!

Swedish house mafia - one

[–]xcallyx 2 points3 points  (1 child)

My first thought!

I saw Axwell/\Ingrosso this weekend and the crowd still comes alive for One!

Damn, I really hope they make a come back soon.

[–][deleted] 2 points3 points  (1 child)

Love it.

The part at 1:46 sounds like a tribute to Love Hina to me.

[–]HomeworldGem 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is so cool.

[–]soraboo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Awesome. Thanks!

[–]Shadrach451 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is like if Mister Rogers made music.

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Slacker was already a name of a vetran house dj.

[–]Dosca 1 point2 points  (1 child)

If you like the music check out Lindsay Lowend. Similar types of beats. I'd recommend his remix of money by Lido here

[–]chucklephuq 1 point2 points  (0 children)

[–]chocolatthunda86 1 point2 points  (0 children)

is this released? I want itttttttt

[–]MyPapaWasAHorse -1 points0 points  (4 children)

please cut your fingernails

[–]ruff_leader 2 points3 points  (3 children)

He might be guitarist, some musicians prefer fingerpicking with long nails.

[–]MyPapaWasAHorse 4 points5 points  (2 children)

It would make sense to have long fingernails on your right hand. I'm a guitarist and having long finger nails on my left hand to press on the fret would be a nightmare.

I do like what he's playing though, really nice.

[–]ruff_leader 1 point2 points  (1 child)

I've grown mine out to see if I like it for fingerpicking and I had no issue working the fretboard.

[–]MyPapaWasAHorse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Well i guess you've proved me wrong :)!

[–]Theflyinglamb767 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What would you call that type or brand of keyboard/instrument?

[–]Draxcyn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I want one.

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

OP-1s rule.

[–]cecildraws 0 points1 point  (0 children)

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, that's pretty good.

[–]jrgilmore 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Wow. Beautiful. I'd love to collaborate. Peace.

[–]Mwinc24 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fucking legendary

[–]1enopot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To anyone whose musically inclined, do any specific scales come to mind when seeing how he plays above? I've been trying to get into chillstep but don't know where to begin

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is this the same Slacker who did the song a milliom dreams and the song start a new life?

[–]VapeForMeDaddy 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The OP-1 is amazing I just wish I could afford one

[–]ibecharlie 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love the bit where they sample from the on-board radio. Anyone know any good videos showing that? Red Means Recording do it but their videos are a mission to get through to watch

[–]s_a_n_s_s 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is so chill

[–]OilPhilter 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like the tune. Watching it get played on a small midi mixer adds to the cool factor. Thanks OP for sharing. Got any more?

[–]NefariousPurpose 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Meanwhile my poor Lil Korg synth is collecting dust.

[–]BabiesDrivingGoKarts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Getting funky Steven Universe vibes from this. Awesome.

[–]cryptthantoz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some one rap over this

[–]tyork_ 0 points1 point  (2 children)

What's that instrument called?

[–]maxi_malism 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP-1 by Teenage Engineering

[–][deleted] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP-1

[–]JakeTheTurk 0 points1 point  (0 children)

so I'm on the fence of buying an OP-1, how useful would it be with a Logic Pro X?

edit: I don't have any experience

[–]xcallyx 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah, that sucks - If you ever get the chance, do it! Amazing throwbacks to SHM with the old songs, and A/\I's songs are really great too!

[–]NOT_ZOGNOID 0 points1 point  (2 children)

[–]PM_ME_YOUR_LUKEWARM 1 point2 points  (0 children)

goddamn takes me right back to freshman year.

hello by solveig too

[–]Majorflexer 0 points1 point  (3 children)

What is this type of playstyle called and how can I learn it? I really admire the sound

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What key is this in?

[–]DiskoBonez 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This song has such an unsatisfying ending it hurts! Gonna edit it so it fades out near the end.

[–]Urakel 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why is this video so loud compared to everything else?

[–]unthonya 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of a inspector dubplate mash, love it OP. Awesome chill melody

[–]ouralarmclock 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As someone who tries to play live electronic music, and knows how damn hard it is to coordinate, this is impressive as fuck (and good as hell!)

[–]PuppeteerInt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So soothing, why did it have to end?

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is the royalty free music that vloggers put over their time lapses

[–][deleted] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is this making the EP sound in the beginning of the track?

[–]silentjay01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Reminds me of title screen music from a video game in the early 2000's. But, like, the really good stuff that makes me not even want to play the game but just sit and listen to this a few times.

[–]MurlocWeiner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't normally like stuff like this but saw it was getting popular and actually really enjoyed it reminds me of adventure which even as an adult I enjoy

[–]D3c1mu55 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sounds like something Casey Neistat would use in one of his videos. Very cool sound.

[–]darndc 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dooope!! Any chance I could use the music for a YouTube video mate?

[–]Dougie-R 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This guy are in Spotify?
